Religion / The X In Xmas: What It Means by kengreatleads(m): 8:26pm On Dec 26, 2016
Earlier today while going through my Facebook wall, a friend pointed out something I haven’t really given much thought but interestingly captured my attention. My friend’s FB post got me asking: Why do people sometimes replace the Christ in Christmas with an X?

According to mathematics, you represent a variable with an X. And a variable is an UNKNOWN value that can take any form.

Here’s my opinion, it’s actually two sided, the first: When you use Xmas instead of Christmas, you’re simply implying that you do not know Christ. He’s a variable, so you replace Him with an X.

The second, when you wish someone a merry Xmas instead of Christmas, what you’re simply telling the person: I’m wishing you a Merry Xmas, not necessarily Merry Christmas. So you can take out the X and replace it with whatever you like, even your name for all I care…lol

I took this discussion to two of my siblings: Gideon and Yemi. Yemi pointed out what’s on the mind of millions and probably on your mind right now that Xmas is just an abbreviation for Christmas like Xteristics for characteristics. However, Gideon indicated that people have literally graduated from typing or writing Xmas to saying it! That is, verbally wishing people Merry Xmas.

I do not think I’ve ever heard anyone say xteristics instead of characteristics, but I’ve heard a good number of people say Merry Xmas countless number of times.

Gideon further looked at it from a whole different point of view when he said X can also mean CANCELLATION! So when you say Xmas or Xtian, you’re actually taking Christ which is the core out of the picture.

You can probably say all these is baseless or something, but one of my school of thoughts is: You don’t just take things for their face value, develop a curious mind that searches deep for the truth behind the physical. Who knows, you may find the key to your happiness, peace and freedom…and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Like I said earlier, these are just my opinions and that of my lovely siblings of course. Let us know what you think, share your opinion at the comment section. Merry Christmas in arrears and a prosperous New Year!

Heartbreak can be a hard condition to deal with, if care is not taken the victim can fall into depression, a few steps away from becoming suicidal. Before now, when I come across a story of a guy or girl who committed suicide due to a broken heart, I quickly judge them as being foolish, selfish and myopic. Believe me, now I know better. It’s really not that easy to deal with a heartbreak or let go of someone you really love. So, based on experience, I’d like to share with you practical steps how I was able to deal with and recover from a heartbreak…

Jobs/Vacancies / A Third-class Graduate Now Turning Down Job Offers From Multinationals by kengreatleads(m): 8:12pm On Sep 12, 2016
I give this testimony to the glory of God and to the shame of the devil. At the end of my university education; through its ups and downs, bitter and sweet moments, I eventually graduated with a third-class degree in computer science. At that point in my life I was overly disappointed, highly discouraged and even suicidal on my bad days because I knew what was happening in the labour market. Every employer wanted graduates with second class upper and above for the limited and highly coveted employment slots. And here I was, I didn’t even have a 2.2, even if employers wanted to reach out in grace.

I had given my life to Christ on campus, and my thirst for God had intensified during this period. To the glory of God, even with my third-class degree, I did not sit at home as I got a job immediately, which is a whole miracle-story on its own. This job came with great exposure and an intense learning curve for me as a fresh graduate and I embraced the job even though the pay was not fantastic. Those of us who were taken by the company were put through a training programme to initiate us into Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing industry. Time went by and I emerged as one of the brightest trainees through the programme. We were soon staffed and placed on projects for multinational companies. After a while, some of my colleagues started filling out applications and searching for bigger opportunities. They would repeatedly forward job links and vacancies to me as I was considered one of the best among my peers. I did not apply for any of those positions as I was always self-defeated because of my third-class university certificate and the devil held it high up in my face all the time. I continued to do my job diligently and also develop myself in my field.

On Mother’s Day in May 2015, Pastor Nomthi preached about the unmerited grace and favour Moses witnessed in the house of Pharaoh, when there was an order to kill every male child of the Israelites. She said that Moses was not only spared but was raised as a prince. I immediately keyed into this lesson of grace and I was full of faith. I applied for a job someone had recommended me for and I was offered the position on the spot with 100 percent increase with good pension and sumptuous packages.

I thought I had seen all. Before the resumption date I was given, I was invited for another job interview with one of the telecom giants in Nigeria. Through the interview process I had to compete with the best of the best and even more experienced applicants. At the end of the interview and test process which lasted several weeks, I came out top as the preferred candidate of all. Now my problem became choosing between the two offers as they were both fantastic and had good prospects. I sought the face of the Lord who had made all these happen, and eventually I had to turn down the Multi-national Telecom Giant’s offer. Now I am at my new job and I have even been given opportunities to travel to different countries on projects (I had never travelled out of Nigeria before this job).

A month ago, another job offer came through with take-home package closing in on about half a million which I had to turn down after wide consultation and seeking the face of the Lord. I also did not apply for this job; all these opportunities came by recommendation. A third-class graduate now turning down job offers from multinational companies – it can only be God and I am here to give back ALL the praise to HIM alone.

Education / 6 Foolproof Tips: How To Pass Post UTME by kengreatleads(m): 4:11pm On Jul 29, 2016
First I congratulate all admission hopefuls who were able to make the eligible cut-off mark for their respective prospective schools. As you rightly know, passing UTME is just a step towards getting admitted into higher institution. You’ve got to pass Post UTME too! So let’s get you prepared for Post UTME…

Understand your prospective school’s UTME admission pattern
Although I prefer every school adopt a unified UTME admission pattern like the transparent UTME admission pattern Unilag uses. The fact is, UTME admission vary across higher institutions. It is therefore wise you understand the pattern through which your prospective school admits students via UTME. To properly prepare for the Post UTME, you need to know the admission pattern of your prospective school so as to know your chance of getting admitted and set a target score for yourself.

Make a friend in your prospective school
Thank God for internet, quite easily you can establish a contact in your prospective school by merely checking Facebook, Nairaland and other social platforms. With these friends, you don’t necessarily have to travel down to the school to get latest updates on admission related matters. They can even help you get a place to settle when you eventually travel to the school for your Post UTME. The benefits of having a friend in the school you wish to secure admission cannot be overemphasized.

Get past questions asap!
It’s a good thing your set is not the first to attempt this post-UTME. It is therefore wise you get if possible all the post-UTME past questions of your prospective school and start studying with them. Post-UTME aside, as a student, you should make it a habit of preparing for any exam with past questions. Personally, past questions didn’t just help me during post-UTME preparation, they helped me during my university days and even after university in preparing for job tests.

Socialize!
At this stage of your admission adventure, it is risky to isolate yourself. Join Facebook groups relating to admission, check education section of Nairaland regularly. In all make sure you maximize the help social media can offer you in actualizing your admission dream. Endeavor also to hang around fellow admission seekers, especially those seeking also seeking admission into your prospective school.

Fall in love with the school’s website
I wouldn’t find it surprising if some admission seekers do not know the website of the school they seek admission. If you fall in this category of Jambites, change right now! You need to glue the domain name of your prospective school’s website to your heart. Not just that, make it a habit to visit the website regularly at least every 4hours daily. Also endeavor to always confirm any news you get from any source on the official website of your prospective school. This way it will be difficult for you to fall victim of admission fraudsters roaming everywhere looking for gullible admission seekers to defraud.

Trust in God
It is one thing to prepare properly for an exam, it is another to be favored by God in that exam. I recall, after narrating my miraculous admission story to a friend, the first this he said was “that’s favor!”. My admission story is a story for another day. The point I’m trying to make is, as you prepare for your post-UTME, believe in yourself and trust in God’s ability to crown your efforts with success.

And for those who could not make the cut-off mark, don’t be too hard of yourself. The fact that you attempted UTME is a sign of your commitment to making something meaningful out of your life. Don’t give up on trying, all you need do is go back to the drawing board, come back stronger with more determination, hard-work and positive attitude. God will definitely crown your efforts with success. I wish you all the best in your academic pursuit.

Amen...Thanks
Religion / Who Is The Holy Spirit? by kengreatleads(m): 11:56am On Apr 04, 2016
Simply put, the Holy Spirit is God's representative on earth. In a nutshell, the Holy Spirit is God on earth. You see, when Jesus was on earth, He knew He wasn't going to be here on earth for long. He knew He'd die for our redemption. So He promised to send us the Holy Spirit, to lead, guide and counsel us on the path of righteousness. When Jesus eventually left the earth, He kept His promise. He sent us the Holy Spirit!
God the Father is not here, the Son not here too but the Holy Spirit is here with us. The moment you accept Christ as your Lord and saviour, the Holy Spirit comes inside of you. Now to keep the Holy Spirit inside you, you need to keep making Him happy by obeying His instructions via the word of God. When you obey the Holy Spirit, you make Jesus happy and you make God the Father happy.

“If ye are willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land”

On the other hand, the more you disobey the Holy Spirit, the more you push Him out of your life, the more you push Him out of your life. And the more you make the Holy Spirit unhappy, the more you make Jesus unhappy and the more you make The Father unhappy. When someone says “develop a personal relationship with God”, what it actually means is: develop a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit. You cannot develop a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit if you are unwilling to obey Him. The Holy Spirit wants to be your friend if you are you are willing to be His friend by obeying the instructions He gives to your conscience through the word of God.

The place of the Holy Spirit in the life of a Christian cannot be overemphasised. The Holy Spirit activates your Christianity, brings it to life, makes the whole difference. A Christian without the Holy Spirit is like a football to the devil. You don’t want the devil playing you around, do you? Your guess is as good as mine.

God help us all…Shalom.

It's easy if your mind is made up and you're willing to pay the price. I know of someone who used to work with SAP now works in an auditing firm. I advice you go for ICAN or ACCA if your interest lies with finance...you can research on professional examinations required for any field you chooses and go for it...all the best!

Education / Top 3 Gadgets That Can Ruin Your GP by kengreatleads(m): 9:35am On Dec 16, 2015
Imagine a life without gadgets, boring right? This is because gadgets form a major part of things that make life fun, easy and interesting. Normally gadgets are not meant to bring down a student’s GP, in fact they’re meant to enhance it. But if a student is not careful enough, the same gadgets meant to enhance his/her GP may paralyze it. Being a student with a smiling GP comes with loads of discipline and focus. It also involves enough courage to put aside anything that stands in the way to becoming a successful student. Despite the vast number of thing that could mar a student’s success, let’s look at the top gadgets that are most likely culprits…

SMART PHONE
Having a great phone is awesome; unfortunately, same great phone could weaken your GP. Some students are so devoted to their phones that they’ve relegated study time to number two and made phone time number one on their priority list, no thanks to WhatsApp, BBM, Facebook and the likes. There’ll be enough time for social media, for now your GP should be priority. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not prohibiting a student from accessing Facebook and the likes. All I’m saying is your GP deserves more time than your phone.

TABLET
I recall MY Unilorin days when the school management decided to provide freshers tablets. I remember several times walking along the popular Unilorin walk-way seeing a good number of students (mostly freshers) recognizable by their tabs sitting along the walk-way with their eyes glued to their tablets’ screens. Guess what most of them were doing, temple run! That year the number of freshers that could not cross to the next level due to poor CGPA was epic. Now, do we blame the school for giving the students tablets to help with their academics or the students for misplaced priority?

LAPTOP
I totally concur, every student in a higher institution should have a laptop. However, students that cannot overcome the temptation of turning their laptops into distractive entertainment centers shouldn’t own one for GP’s sake! I’ve heard students confess to stabbing lectures because of Zuma! Come on guys; Zuma, FIFA, PES not going anywhere, all your GP is asking is a dedication of 4, 5 or 7 years as the case may be, after then you can play all the games you want plus any film of your choice. Entertainment is quite good but not at the expense of your beloved GP.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you should shut down your internet social life, stop playing video games, watching movies and become a zombie who is only interested in building GP. While in school, have fun, do things that make you happy but applying wisdom in all you do. Learn to prioritize: after God, academics and every other thing can follow. A friend of mine while in school used to delete all the social apps on his phone when school is in session and reinstalls them when school is on break. He graduated with 4.4 something and now works with a major organization. It’s all about understanding yourself and striking a balance by prioritizing. Good luck on your quest to graduating with a great GP!

Career / What About Emotional Intelligence? by kengreatleads(m): 6:24am On Nov 17, 2015
Recently I was just thinking and a question crossed my mind: Kenny, imagine you’re in an interview and the interviewer asks you “what is emotional intelligence?” At first I was speechless or perhaps thoughtless amazed not because the way the question hit me but because despite the noise on LinkedIn concerning emotional intelligence, I did not take time to read about it. So I had to do some research, updated my knowledge base concerning this interesting topic and decided to share my findings with you guys. Because I know just like me there’re loads of people who will be speechless if asked what emotional intelligence is. So what about emotional intelligence?

According to Wikipedia, Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize one's own and other people's emotions, to discriminate between different feelings and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior. Now let’s carefully analyze the definition in bits…

First, EI is the ability to recognize one’s own emotion. This means first, you need to understand your emotions: this has a lot to do with your temperament. Every temperament has shortcomings; this is the more reason you need to know your temperament so as to be able to deal with your temperament’s shortcomings.

The second part of the definition: ability to recognize people’s emotions. This is really important as it makes you coexist harmoniously with people. If you’re able to recognize and understand a person’s emotions, you’ll be able to relate with the person appropriately, no matter what that person does, you’ll not be caught off-guard because you know what to expect from him/her. Assuming Kemi is my colleague in office and I’m able to recognize Kemi’s emotions, I’ll be able to relate with Kemi based on my knowledge of her emotions. Even if everyone sees Kemi as stubborn, impossible to work with, I shouldn’t have any problem with Kemi.

Ability to discriminate between different feelings and label them appropriately. In dealing with people, you’re going to have to always bear in mind that people are different. EI involves your ability to tell the difference between John and Joshua, and also know that the way you relate with John should be different from the way you relate with Joshua. At the end of the day, John and Joshua will be happy with you because you’ve been able to treat each of them fairly based on your understanding of their individual feelings.

And finally, ability to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior. This last part summarizes it all. Being emotionally intelligent shapes not just the way you think but your behavior. It takes a sales person who is emotionally intelligent to make huge sales because he understands his customers and knows how to keep them happy and satisfied.

The importance of emotional intelligence cannot be overemphasized. As long as you’re alive, relating with people is inevitable. We all therefore need to fully understand to concept of EI in order to form great and healthy bonds with people not just in work place but every place.

Career / Pride Vs Progress by kengreatleads(m): 8:49pm On Oct 09, 2015
Stumbled on a very interesting thread on Nairaland involving a young man who was heartbroken and disheartened because he got fired for guess what? Refusal to carry his boss’s bag! The boss happens to be of the same age range with this guy and the daughter of the owner of the company. His question to Nairalanders: was he wrong for not carrying the bag?

At first, I quickly concluded that he did nothing wrong by not carrying the bag. But on a second thought after reading some of the wise comments by fellow Nairalanders, I agreed he should have carried the bag. Wait a sec, before you cast your stones at me for agreeing he ought to have carried his mate’s bag like a slave, please read my reason…
On our individual road to success, especially if you’re from a humble background without rich relatives and all, FOCUS is inevitable. This implies you may have to absorb a lot of trash on your quest to the top. According to the young man, he was about to take on a gigantic project for the company before he abruptly got himself fired. My point, he should have focused on the project and consider carrying the bag a mere means to an end.

You know what? Some bosses have ego that must be fed. The thing is you keep feeding that ego as long as you have a plan and keep getting what you want. Some great guys we celebrate have done a lot worse than carry bags to get to where they are today. Look at them today, the demeaning stuffs they may have done in the past is not even written on their foreheads! Except some of them open up to you to tell you the kind of menial services they’ve had to render in the past, you may never know.

All I’m saying is: keep your eyes on the mark, you may have to do loads of stuffs you normally wouldn’t do, just do it. As long as it’s neither illegal nor against your conscience with a capability of stealing your peace, do it abeg! All the rubbish you’re going to have to tolerate, consider them collateral damages. Perhaps if the young man carried the bag, he’d still have his job. Please don’t ever make the same mistake he made, your progress is worth more than a momentary battered pride. Good luck on your quest to the top.

Yeah! accent otherwise known as mother tongue interference is a big impediment to spoken English. The dictionary can only help if you have a knowledge of the speech sounds and the stress pattern. If you can't match the symbols to the sound it produces, then you need an instructor. Apart from this, watch as many American or British movies as you can, ensure they come with subtitles so you can get each word as it's pronounced. Listen to foreign news too - BBC, CNN, Fox etc. I won't recommend any of our local news stations believe me you're better than some of them. Good luck to you in your quest to improve self.

Right on point!

The first is the
ability to speak well with very little or
no blunders. if a man of 30+ is suffering frm dis, what steps and action can u recommend for him to help him overcome this challenge?

1st: He needs to hang more around people who speak well as this will ignite the passion to conquer the challenge.

2nd: Get helpful materials on how to improve your grammar.

3rd: Ask grammar related questions from people you know who speak well.

4th: Read more! I'll recommend fictional books. Not necessarily fictions though, it could be reading on a topic of interest. Just make sure you read quality books more. They not only build your mind, they also improve you grammatically.

5th: Watch more foreign movies (American/UK), they have a way of helping you speak well (from personal experience).

6th: Confidently speak when you get the chance, it doesn't matter if you're laughed at, it will help you to easily learn to say the right thing next time.

7th: Be open to corrections.

8th: Don't give up! Soon enough, speaking well will no longer be a problem.

All the best!

Career / Top 3 Skills A Graduate Can’t Do Without by kengreatleads(m): 1:17pm On Sep 25, 2015
No matter what you desire to be, either an entrepreneur or you intend to build a career working in an organization, these three skills are inevitable. After careful observation, I discovered, to really get and stay ahead of the competition; you’ve got to arm yourself with these three skills…without much ado, lego…

Team Spirit

I define team spirit as the ability to work with a team in order to achieve a common goal. If you’ve seen “The Men Who Built America”, when the three industrial titans: JP Morgan, John D Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie were faced with a common enemy: Williams Jennings Bryan who threatened to shatter their individual business empires if elected president of The United States. Morgan, Rockefeller and Carnegie ingeniously put behind their rivalry and worked together as a team to ensure Bryan didn’t become president, and guess what? They succeeded! Team spirit is an act that has to be developed, perfected and harnessed. The earlier you start developing a team spirit the better for you, believe me, team spirit will come handy on your quest to the top. One fact you also need to know: you may one day have to team up with your competitors against a common enemy, Just like Morgan, Rockefeller and Carnegie teaming up against US presidential candidate Bryan. The bottom line is, as long as you get what you want, teaming up with your rival shouldn’t be a problem.

Effective Communication
The importance of effective communication to anyone hoping to make headway in any industry cannot be overemphasized. I will be considering effective communication from two angles: The first is the ability to speak well with very little or no blunders. Recently, I asked a group of teenage girls why they can’t speak good English, most of them blamed the poor standard of their school. What surprised me was that none of them was courageous enough to blame self. What those girls did not know, ability to speak well is better developed at a young age mostly by self, with help of others of course. Imagine in a meeting, you have this really great idea but you decide to keep it to yourself because you’re afraid you’d make a blunder. If you find yourself deficient of the ability to speak well, it’s not too late to develop and improve your ability to speak well. It’s best you start now!
Another angle from which I’ll like to look at effective communication is the ability to communicate politely with colleagues in such way that makes working with you fun. Ability to communicate politely is a major ingredient to building healthy relationships in work place. Communicating politely is an attitude that should be developed in order not to end up with an awkward number of enemies. As you climb to the top, you should be working on building a viable friend base not an enemy base. One way to achieve a viable friend base is to communicate with people in such a way that gives them a sense of worth and belonging.

IT Skill
Hello? This is 21st century my dear, computer skill is a must, you heard right, a must! Not just to stay ahead of the competition, for you to even compete at all, at least a basic knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint coupled with an ability to effectively use of the internet should top your priority list. Currently, most top organizations prefer like 50% of their recruitment process done online. Now imagine the amount of opportunities you’ll likely miss if you have no idea how the internet works. The opportunities you stand to gain developing IT skills greatly surpass any amount of stress you’ll probably encounter developing these skills; you just cannot afford to lose the opportunities attributed to IT. If you recall the funny incident that transpired between the NSCDC man and Channels TV guys, I’m sure you remember “ww.nscde yes, so (clears throat), that’s all”. It’s more than enough indicator that at this age, IT skill is required by everyone irrespective of who you are.

Computers / Lol! Windows 10 By Force by kengreatleads(m): 8:53pm On Sep 16, 2015
Microsoft is so keen on influencing people to upgrade to windows 10 that Windows 10 downloads to a hidden folder on your computer provided you're using Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 and you have automatic update turned on.

Although you don't have to install the update if you don't want to, the download is said to take up to 3.5 to 6GB of your disk space. Microsoft reason for this move is to "help upgradeable devices get ready" in case users decide to install Windows 10.

So for those of you so glued to your Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1, Microsoft really wants you to upgrade...I think it's a cool move though.
