New Canadian Quarantine requirements to become effective in the coming weeks: "Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday announced stricter restrictions on travelers in response to new, likely more contagious variants of the novel coronavirus — including making it mandatory for travelers to quarantine in a hotel at their own expense when they arrive in Canada and suspending airline service to Mexico and all Caribbean destinations until April 30. Trudeau said in addition to the pre-boarding test Canada already requires, the government will be introducing mandatory PCR testing at the airport for people returning to Canada. “Travelers will then have to wait for up to three days at an approved hotel for their test results, at their own expense, which is expected to be more than $2,000,” Trudeau said. “Those with negative test results will then be able to quarantine at home under significantly increased surveillance and enforcement.” |

Infiosa: As mandatory as quarantine plans sound but it's a function of the state you are visiting in the US. No sir, effective Jan 26, it is now a federal manadate signed into law by executive action by Biden, that can and most likely will be regulated at POE. Things are moving very quickly as new variants of the virus are popping up. The burden of enforcing pre testing is on the airlines. You will not be allowed to board without a negative covid test. Quarantine plans however are expected to be validated at POE. These are all still very new as plans are still being tweaked by the CDC. I will not be surprised if the US eventually comes up with stricter enforcement of quanrantine. Canada just announced theirs today. "Trudeau said in addition to the pre-boarding test Canada already requires, the government will be introducing mandatory PCR testing at the airport for people returning to Canada. Travelers will then have to wait for up to three days at an approved hotel for their test results, at their own expense, which is expected to be more than $2,000,” Trudeau said." Those with negative test results will then be able to quarantine at home under significantly increased surveillance and enforcement. Very draconian in my opinion. My interpretation of this is that they are trying to discourage international travel. “ 3 Likes 1 Share |

Infiosa: The underlying principle here is "flee from all appearances of evil that can possibly lead to negative connotations". Carrying a resume or business cards or even attending an interview in the US are not explicitly restricted, but the immigration officers at POE can infer negative things just by seeing stuff like this. It has happened many times before and people should be careful and just avoid it. There was the case of a lady that was denied entry when they found her hair extensions hustle business cards along with a few packets of extensions in her luggage. They said she was going to market and sell her products, which she denied, but then, guess what the result was? The only and most updated requirement for non US citizens is Convid 19 negative test. Not 100% true. There is also the requirement that you quarantine for 10 days. Do you envision that they may ask you your quarantine plans at POE? Again, not explicitly stated but likely a stumbling block if you don't prepare well and think its a triviality. Y'all keep stating the officially published restrictions when we all know that the POE officer has wide discretion to allow or deny entry and can infer almost anything from anything, which they often do. My simple message is plan and prepare well. 1 Like |

UhnNah: Whatever dude. I'm not part of the echo chamber/try your luck gang that doesn't and cannot think things through thoroughly. And this is not derailing, it is actually very germaine to the topic of this thread. Those that can have deciphered the message which is that the pandemic has indeed indirectly made getting a visa more difficult right now and will make better preparations if they indeed have a strong reason to go for an interview at this time. 1 Like 1 Share |

He was ultimately successful: Me: I would be going to continue by undergraduate degree in biology at Edward Waters college in Florida. I started taking classes for the fall semester in Nigeria because of the pandemic and ended with a 4.0 GPA, I have my result with me. V.O: wow, 4.0, that's great. fkj950ax: Do I have to spell out everything? I said just like they use the presence of a resume on your person to infer something else, they also use the fact that you're traveling on vacation during a pandemic to a place where most things are shut down to infer some other intent. Its really that simple. Besides that, what you wrote means exactly what I addressed. You said "everyone is guaranteed entry if they have a valid visa and...…." so not true! 2 Likes 1 Share |
Travel / Re: USA Visit Visa Part 4 by Kettlecorn: 6:51pm On Jan 29, 2021 |
fkj950ax: Everyone is guaranteed entry if you have a valid visa, and COVID is not being used at any POE to deny entry This is so far from the truth, it is not even funny. Only US citizens are "eventually" guaranteed entry into the country. They can be detained and delayed but will be let in. Everyone else, including permanent residents can and have been denied entry in the past. A visa holder has no guaranteed entry. The decision is up to the immigration officer and they can deny entry without giving you a reason. If you know your way around, you can start an appeals process right there, but it is a very convoluted process and almost impossible without prior legal representation arrangement. 1 Like 1 Share |
Travel / Re: USA Visit Visa Part 4 by Kettlecorn: 6:20pm On Jan 29, 2021 |
Infiosa: I said the only people guaranteed entry are citizens and permanent residents, but they also need to have a negative covid test. A non citizen with a visa and negative covid test is not guaranteed entry at POE. It is and has always been at the discretion of the USCIS officer, and during a pandemic, non essential travel is discourged. As you well know, not every requirement/restriction is published or communicated. For example, People have been denied entry because they found resumes or even business cards on their person. Not a published requirement, but an indication of an inference. 1 Like |

UhnNah: Getting a student visa has always been relatively more difficult from Nigeria because of the high level of japa tendencies of our citizens. Adding a pandemic to the mix has only compounded issues. You cannot deny the fact that it is even more difficult with the pandemic. My point is that even when it is clear that conditions are not ideal and the likelihood of being denied is even higher, people are still trying their luck. You have to be smart to succeed. The people that I know that started the online option have the backing of their schools which have already made representation to the State department so that after their first year, they will easily be granted a visa. There are options out there. You will only look desperate if you try to push through now. Level of denial is currently high. Most schools are operating remotely even when on campus so what is the benefit of going there in person? Even visiting friends and family is a long shot and trying your luck. How can you justify a vacation when you need to quarantine for 10 days upon entry? The official policy is that only essential travel is encouraged. The only people guaranteed entry are citizens and permanent residents and they are subject to testing and quarantine. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Spanishmilf: Why would you be discouraged when presented with information that can help you prepare well unless you have ulterior motives? We all know the situation on the ground now. There are serious students who were not deterred and have started their first year in American universities remotely from Nigeria. Yes, they are attending classes online from Nigeria due to the Covid situation. When covid is over, they will go and apply for their student visa and attend in person. Do you not think these people stand a better chance than those who want to go "try their luck" during the pandemic? 4 Likes |

ceaser: Well, if Nigeria will do anything reasonable, they should either provide funds or source for such to ensure their own vaccine production. India produces it's own vaccine and a lot of medications. Nigeria produces some medications and we can sure ramp up out capacity to produce more if we have a willing and reasonable government. We have the expertise, what we lack is the funds. India is the largest manufacturer of vaccines in the world. But all the manufacturers are private companies not govt owned entities. In Nigeria, we only need the government to provide stable electricity, water and guarantee security. The private sector can and will do the rest with good profits. |

Our Constitution is stupid and messed up. The Governor is the chief security officer of the state but the army can operate in his territory without his knowledge or consent . We copied our system of government but did not copy it well and left out aspects that achieve local accountability and balance of power. In the model we copied from, the police is under local and state government and troops cannot be deployed without a request from the governor. 2 Likes 1 Share |

True talk from Bill Gates. Nigeria is not ready to buy any vaccines right now. It will be a huge waste of money. The Pfizer vaccine needs to be stored at -70C while Moderna requires about -20C. First, we do not have constant electricity. Second, we don't have the equipment or the logistical organization for this. We are in big trouble. Astrazenica, that can be stored at between 2 and 8 degrees centigrade may be possible in Nigeria with constant electricity. Bill Gates is absolutely right. We need to spend our money on fixing our electricity and logistics then we can accept free donated vaccines from the WHO. Right now, our government is not even concerned. High ranking officials and the rich are flying to first world countries to receive the vaccine. They don't care about you. 1 Like |

But then, you can't cheat physics. Longevity is always a question mark for a souped up small engine. Top notch maintenance is a key factor in how long the engine will last. 18 Likes 1 Share |

smallsmall: You are conflating 2 different issues. The fact that you fire someone for stealing (or any other criminal act) does not forfeit the employees rights to compensation for time already worked (compensation accrued)/services rendered. Employment ends as of when the firing happens and the employer is still liable to pay for work done up until that point. That's the law. The employer did not do him a favor. In fact, he could have been sued if he did not pay up. In addition, did you notice that he took down the post? He could have been sued for defamation with that post. The criminal act of stealing is another matter entirely and should be addressed by the legal system. It does not cancel payment already owed. Completely different issue. Remember that the chef is innocent until proven guilty and in fact, there is no guarantee that the chef will be found guilty if charged to court. |

Car Talk / Re: Is 2018 Ford F250 6.7l Powerstroke Engine A Good Buy In Nigeria? by Kettlecorn: 11:07pm On Jan 21, 2021 |
bigbauer: You should note that all diesel engines manufactured for the US market require Ultra Low Sulfur diesel. Is this available in Nigeria? The F250 also uses/needs DEF fluid for the emissions systems to work properly (availability an issue?). A tank of DEF lasts anywhere from 3k to 6k miles depending on how you drive, YMMV. Vehicle will go into limp mode if you run out of DEF fluid and be limited to 50mph. It may even refuse to start after so many starts with no DEF fluid. A potential way around these issues is to delete the DPF/DEF exhaust system, run straight pipes and retune the engine but you need a very knowledgeable mechanic to do that. Or if you're lucky to find one, buy one manufactured for the Mexican market that lacks all the emissions stuff. Having said all this, it may be easier to buy a diesel Tacoma that lacks all the complicated emissions stuff and can run any type of diesel if you are determined to drive a diesel truck. 1 Like |

lekki1444: Sir, let me tell you something. Nigeria is called a "shithole" country, not just because we don't have electricity or running water or good roads or good functioning schools. Its also because the average Nigerian does not know/understand the duties of a citizen and does not realize nor care about the larger effects of their actions on society at large. We are still caught up in an 18th century jungle justice system where we think an individual can be the Judge, Jury and Executioner all in one even when we have written laws, organizations and systems that should decide outcomes. I am telling you that society at large is worse for it because we think we are being "kind" by letting a thief go. Nigeria is full of thieves because we let them all go, big and small thieves alike. As to your question "he was stealing sardines and tomatos and stuff and those things have receipts which tells you their value." No sir, what you paid for something does not necessarily determine its value under the law. This is why I say let the legal system handle it. We as average individuals are not equipped for this. |
Car Talk / Re: Upsurge In Vehicle Theft At Gun Point In Lagos Is Worrying by Kettlecorn: 6:17pm On Jan 21, 2021 |
Litmus: My point is that you absolutely cannot draw any inferences from Nigerian crime stats, prison population included. There is absolutely no correlation between prison population and level of crime in Nigeria. I said most crimes go unreported in Nigeria so that implies that most crimes are not prosecuted and are unsolved and therefore implication is low numbers of incarceration = low prison population = low incarceration rate per capita. As a matter of fact, how many prisoners in Nigeria have actually been sentenced by a court? A large number are awaiting trial. I am willing to stake a years salary that even the prison population number you quoted is incorrect . The other countries included in your list have highly functioning justice systems that aggressively prosecute crimes both white and blue collar so it would appear that their crime rates are higher than Nigeria's. Your comparison is even not apples to apples because they have excluded people held in Jail and the Nigerian system doesn't make a distinction between prison and jail. |

lekki1444: I will ignore your insults and focus on bringing out the key points. You cannot unilaterally decide to deduct from someone's salary the value of stolen items. Who decides the value of the items? It seems logical but its not legal. This is one distinction between our 18th century jungle justice society and how 21st century societies operate, which is where we profess to want to be. Legally, he is still on the hook to pay him for time worked. The correct thing to do would have been to fire the chef as he rightly did, recover his items, prosecute the chef and pay him his salary! All legal and above board and the entire society at large benefits rather than whine on social media. |
