Car Talk / Re: Upsurge In Vehicle Theft At Gun Point In Lagos Is Worrying by Kettlecorn: 5:03pm On Jan 21, 2021 |
Litmus: You and I both know that published crime stats in Nigeria is not even worth the paper its printed on. Most crimes are not even reported because there are huge disincentives to reporting a crime. A vast majority of Nigerians will do anything to avoid contact with the police even at the point of death It is only in Nigeria that 300 people can be kidnapped and moved through the town into the forest with zero intelligence as to their whereabouts and their abductors come out to ask for ransome. Can't happen anywhere else, not even in Afghanistan. Only in Nigeria that we all know of roads/ highways that even the governor of the state cannot travel due to insecurity. Rampant crime and massive insecurity is an open secret in Nigeria. Its one thing to have a high crime rate. Its another thing to have close to 100% unsolved crime/prosecution rate by authorities 2 Likes 1 Share |

"I gave it all to him and told him not to come back again. I paid him for the time he had worked during the month. I know I am overly nice." And we wonder why the Nigerian system is rotten and doesn't work. By letting him go free without prosecution, he is being let loose back into society to continue stealing with nothing on his record. His next employer is in trouble. Second, why in the world would you think you're being nice by paying someone for the time they worked? This mentality is common amongst Nigerian employers and itself is a thieving mentality. A workman is entitled to their wages. You are not doing him a favor by paying him. 2 Likes 1 Share |
Car Talk / Re: Is 2018 Ford F250 6.7l Powerstroke Engine A Good Buy In Nigeria? by Kettlecorn: 9:30pm On Jan 20, 2021 |
bigbauer: The Ford 6.7L scorpion engine is only about a decade old with 3 generations; 2011-2014, 2015-2019 and 2020-2021. It is a very powerful engine with the 3rd generation capable of over 1000 lb-ft of torque. My question to you would be what do you plan to do with this vehicle? If you are not towing or carrying anything big, why do you need such a powerful work truck? For a daily driver, it will be an expensive toy. This engine is known for some very expensive failures but when sorted, it is one of the best diesel truck engines on the market and has gotten better with each generation. Prior to 2020, all 6.7l engines were prone to injector pump failure. This failure can potentially destroy the fuel system and cause very expensive repairs. The EGR coolers are also known to fail. Pre 2015 models also experienced broken glow plugs and premature turbo failure. These are all relatively expensive repairs. Although it is meant to be a work truck, it is very comfortable and great for long distance travel. If you find a cheap 6.7l truck, make sure to have it checked out by a reliable diesel mechanic or you will buy someone's nightmare. In terms of reliability and simplicity, I would rate the Tundra higher. It will also go as long as a diesel, easily going 400k reliable miles. 2 Likes |

KnightsTemplar: It will soon get there. The poor and middle class are more accessible so they are first in line. When there is nothing left, the rich will be next. And as I said, rich is a relative term. In this context, it simply means those who have want to need to survive. 1 Like |

It is only by the special Grace of God that Nigeria has not yet fallen into an extreme state of anarchy. A foreigner once remarked that it is amazing that you can still walk or drive around in relative safety in a country where there is extreme hunger, lack and hopelessness for a vast majority of its citizenry. "When the people shall have nothing more to eat, they will eat the rich". The word rich is relative and refers to anyone that has something that someone else does not have. Could be a loaf of bread, a pair of shoes a keke or a car. May God help us all! 164 Likes 21 Shares |

joeadex: No sir. The conference will hold with a virtual option, 100% certain. The conference will have a virtual option (100% certain) as well as option to attend in person (yet to be locked in) if possible. The only thing they are waiting to decide is if there will be any in person attendance depending on the covid situation. You need to come to terms with the fact that you do not need to be physically present to attend the conference and be able to articulate what specific benefits will accrue to you by investing a large amount of money to attend in person. Even presenters and exhibitors will have a virtual option. Here's a quote from the conference site: What if I am from another country and cannot travel to the United States? You have the option of attending OTC virtually. It will be recorded, and you can watch during the time zone that works to your favor, with the exception of live sessions—which will be uploaded at a later date. Nikirurussia:Yes, it is allowable under US immigration law, even if your visa has only a day to expire. Visa expiry date applies to your date of entry and does not determine your duration of stay. But the problem is that the immigration officer has all the power at the POE. They can decide to deny entry for a variety of reasons that could be triggered by further enquiry when they see you expiry date 2 Likes |

joeadex: Hmm, na wa o! I don't know what they will ask you. But if I was in your shoes, I would pray they ask me this basic question and not just assume the worst stereotypes for my application. Why must you be physically there to attend the conference? Prepare well to answer this question in this Corona virus pandemic situation. Note that the conference has a virtual option that is open to all participants and presenters. All registered attendees will be able to access content virtually. The intent is not to demonize anyone but rather to draw attention to and educate. The risk is beyond personal/individual. Open travel between countries is one of the vehicles that has accelerated the spread of covid. Travelers are risking either taking the disease with them to another location or bringing it back to their home location. If travel is non essential, it is discouraged. Tourism at this point in time risks transmitting the virus between countries. To me, the only type of vacation that makes sense now is if you travel and isolate yourself when you get there like an AI holiday, but that is not what people are doing. |
Car Talk / Re: I Brought A Used Lexus Gs350 And Now It’s Issues by Kettlecorn: 1:53am On Jan 16, 2021 |
Try this for your malfunctioning trunk. There is a valet button in the glove compartment that locks and unlocks the trunk. Push this button then try opening the trunk. It possibly got reset when you replaced your battery. If it doesn't work after pushing the button, disconnect your battery cable and let it sit for 5 minutes. Connect and try again. Third option is to open the trunk using the key slot beside number plate light on the trunk lid until you get this figured out. Your air pressure light (TPMS) on simply means one or more of the tires is out of range of the correct air pressure. Check all 4 and make sure they are all at the same recommended pressure. If you have a full size spare with a linked sensor, make sure to check that too. , |

Car Talk / Re: Changing My Toyota Sienna Timing Belt by Kettlecorn: 2:10am On Jan 15, 2021 |
Na timing belt you dey take play ludo like this? You get mind o. This is one part that you should never wait for it to spoil before replacing. A broken timing belt can lead to severe engine damage in an interference engine. But lucky for you, yours is a non interference engine. Worst case is that the car will leave you stranded and you will pay some good money to have it changed if it breaks. The service interval for Sienna timing belts of that vintage is 90k miles. If it was replaced at the right mileage interval (first 99k miles) before you bought it, it will be due in another 10k miles. If I was you, I will change it now for peace of mind. I won't travel long distance with it before changing. And BTW, your van is 21 years old not 5 years 4 Likes |

OP, but seriously, don't let emotions cloud your judgement. If you don't have to move now, don't do it. $1 Dollar = 475 Naira. Does this apply to US citizens too? Was talking with someone discussing the fact that they can't deny a US citizen entry into the country. I believe the airline will be the enforcer because as a private company, they can legally deny anybody boarding with this rule, but once the person arrives in the US, the govt can't deny them entry |

Enny010514: The airline is probably the biggest hurdle you will face. Make sure you check with them ahead of time that they will let you board with a passport less than 6 months validity. They sometimes make their own rules |

Travel / Re: Why Canada Is A Better Immigration Destination Than The United States by Kettlecorn: 11:34pm On Jan 10, 2021 |
Absolutely no need to try to justify one choice over the other. The simple truth is that Canada became more attractive to Nigerians when the US tightened up their immigration policies and it became extremely difficult for Nigerians to get in. It's all relative. However, given a free choice, most Nigerian professionals will most likely prefer the US just like most others that immigrate from the Western world.A large number of Nigerians in the healthcare sector used Canada and the U.K. as a stepping stone to get to the US in the past. Not so easy now. 1 Like |

Religion / Re: A Fulani Christian Shares His Challenges After Accepting Christ by Kettlecorn: 9:51pm On Jan 03, 2021 |
The hero of this story is the Mother. Although I suspect she is not a Christian, her actions are truly Christ like. She did not care for her own safety or well being. The love for her child moved her to free him knowing that her own life will be in danger. God bless our mothers! My prayer is that his father should have this kind of love for his child, who is no longer a minor and is competent to make his own decisions in life. |

francawilson: Everything you mentioned that you want can easily be added to your current vehicle aftermarket. Ask your car dealer friend in the US to send you the aftermarket kits. They are all simple kits that are available as add ons. If your primary concern is reliability and durability, which you claim to experience from your current vehicle, why not just add these options to it and be done? The devil you know is better than the one you don't. |
Car Talk / Re: My Mercedes Benz Gl550 2008 Smoke After Starting The Engine In The Morning by Kettlecorn: 6:21pm On Jan 03, 2021 |
A couple people have nailed the answer above. Your valve stem seals are worn. Blue smoke is a clear sign that your engine is burning oil. Your valve guide seals are likely worn or broken causing oil leakage that is flowing into the combustion chamber, then the oil is burnt together with the fuel creating blue smoke. An engine has valves that open and close mechanically by pressure from a rocker arm to let air and fuel come into the engine. These valves also let the exhaust gas out of the engine after the combination of air and fuel has been burnt. Oil covers the top of the valves where the rocker arm applies pressure. Valve seals normally prevent the oil from flowing into the engine. If the seals are worn or broken (Do you hear a rattling noise at startup?), the oil will come into the engine and pool after sitting for a while and is burnt along with air and fuel causing blue smoke on startup. Another culprit for blue smoke at startup is worn piston seals, piston wear, intake manifold gasket leak, faulty PDF valve etc. |
