Hello all,
After following this forum for some time i realize there are still good people in Nigeria who can help with love.
Kudos to you all.

I have a family friend's son who got admission into Carleton university to study Biochemistry(Undergraduate) and wants to apply for the visa.
My question is that can a fixed deposit account be used as sponsor account to apply for a canadian Visa?

Thanks for your swift response.

God bless you.
It can be used.
However you should get an affirmation letter from the bank categorically stating the fixed sum maturity date and hinting on its purpose when liquidated.
All you need to do is convince the VO beyond every reasonable doubts that the said sum is available for study purposes.

Thanks @Opoki, unfortunately I graduated with a second class lower, and theuniversities I checked with required a second class upper...
I kindly advice you opt for the GMAT/GRE route. It will increase your chances of securing admission/funding. It's not easy but with special arrangements, even the Devil can see God. cheesy

Special shoutout to those that have been contributing tirelessly to this thread. The aim of this write up is to clarify some questions people have asked and will ask in future so as to lighten the burden of those currently contributing heavily to this post.
I left Nigeria in April 2015 to study a one year program at Fanshawe College, London Ontario. Tuition for the program was 12,000 CAD. (Would have done a 2 year program if I had known better but that’s by the way). Rent was 450 CAD per month including all amenities (internet, laundry and co). Was lucky to find a house that had all I needed including kitchen utensils, bed, table, chair and co. Was working in Nigeria before I left so I had the issue of converting my hard earned naira to CAD. Met a Nigerian that was building his house in Naija so what we did was agree on a rate, transfer to his wife his naija from here in Canada and then he’ll pay the Canadian equivalent to my Canadian account. Slowly I changed over 600k to CAD. To God be all the glory. I wanted to work while I was in London but my program was too strenuous to allow me work. Wasn’t planning to fail and then pay more money and also waste my time.
Anyway, my program in London Ontario finished in December 2015. I needed to do another program, possibly one year so that I’ll be entitled to a 3 year work permit (this is why I said I wish I had done a 2 year program but nothing spoil). I eventually had to move to Calgary to stay with my sister and her husband. That is currently saving me monthly rent among other things. Applied for a second program at a college in Calgary. Program will start in two weeks’ time; April 2016. Meanwhile from January 2016, I got a part time job with a retail store where I earn minimum wage to at least contribute to my brother in law’s household and also send some money home to family.
Want to step in my shoes, please note the following…
1) Be nice to people and make friends. Most of the breakthrough I made was with God and my friends. They even taught me how to drive and get my license instead of going to a driving school. Attended lots of birthday parties in London
2) Ask a lot of questions. There’s a very high chance that what you need or are looking for can be gotten easily via the friends you make here
3) Form A is good. However delay can be catastrophic. Have a friend here that still waiting for UBA to pay the tuition for his school. He had to borrow money eventually. Best thing is to link up with people that need to send money home. Make sure you can do online transfer. Don’t be like my former housemate that was using his GTB MasterCard from here
4) There are jobs but what really gets your foot in the door are your connections. Was able to do some volunteer work at a consulting firm in Calgary. Got the offer through a friend. Same scenario for the retail job. Gradually I’m getting experience both in retail and professional work force
Meanwhile I am still learning. That’s the reason I came here in the first place. Will answer the questions I can and then hope the bosses will answer the one(s) wey pass me.
Congratulations, u are alrdy on d "brktru" track.
It's nice u share these info's töö, it helps lift minds here.
From assertion, u do d minimum wage job, in relation to the 20hr/wk, are there no cases of more than one job?
On the average, could u give a rough monthly take home for a good hustler?
Someone initially said students could make as much as 3k$ on monthly basis, how true?

Thanks in anticipation

Lol it's true, but I actually don't care - that's their problem! I'm done with my final exams, so I'm gonna be working full time now for the summer! There are a lot of jobs you can take as a full time student.

Some students work at MacDonalds, Tim Hortons, Wendy's, at the shopping malls etc. I and few other students I know work as a customer care agent for Rogers/Fido. I know like 2-3 people who work for an insurance and credit card company!
Minimum wage they say is abt 11$ per hour 4 a max of 20hr/wk.
Could u tell us more about pay and this 20hr tin?

Well "situation in Canada" I would say is a broad subject lol. As regards the hustle, there is money as long as you are ready to work during breaks and holidays and then do some part time jobs to keep body and soul together when school is on. But i must tell you part time job and studies isnt easy as it sound being honest. Especially when you are still a newbie and you have to quickly switch to the demanding educational system here. smiley
Well said, overtime we have learnt of the crazy grading system. The idea of 70% practicals and 30% theory.
It simply means nursing ideas of working to raise fees is a no, no huh
But how is the course work then? Do u hv to go to Pluto and back to make an A? grin

I just finished my exams and i am totally free for the next two to three weeks. You can shoot me any specific questions about study in Canada. This is in a bid to pay back what i have gained from this forum when i was an applicant like everyone else about a year ago.
Merci smiley wink
Let's not dwell in the conventional admission issues.
What's the situation like in Canada?
How's the hustle spirit like? Moni dey Canny 4 students so?

Dear Friends in Christ, on this most holy night when our Lord Jesus Christ passed from death to life, the church invites her children throughout the world to come together in vigil and prayer. This is the passover of the Lord: if we honor the memory of his death and resurrection by hearing his word and celebrating his mysteries, then we are confident that we shall share his victory over death and live with him forever in God.
May this night bring the hoped for TRV's.

Happy easter all.

Been trying fruitlessly to make a flywire payment for 79$ due to the Form A issues.
Please who has an alternative to this?
I can't use cards, as the school (Okanagam college) doesn't accept anything but flywire for their application fees from Nigeria.

Urgent help needed, please.

Good morning, please i need your help concerning making the right choice between applying for a graduate certificate program in Durham ( 1 year) and a MSc. in University of Regina (2 years). I am yet to apply for this two but i need the one that will be moreok for me cos i plan to stay back after my studies to work. NB: I already have an admission to study an Advanced Diploma Certificate program (3 years) in Seneca but now i felt it's going to waste my time, reason why i wanna apply for either of the two above. Should i go on to submit my Visa application with the Seneca admission pending the time i receive admission from any option i go for above or what would you suggest sir. Regards
First things first.
What was your CGPA?
If u qualify for an Msc what then is a certificate for?
Regina offers u alot of opportunities, an Msc is a better shot in my opinion.
Mind u, the deadline for admissions to Regina is April for most courses, and May for a select few.

Tick tick..says the clock.

Goodluck.

For all who are actively in the Canadian Labor market.
There has been an unverified speculations of "economic depression " hitting Canada.
May say it's no longer very lucrative to relcoate to Canada with ideas of earning good income.
Kindly address this for people who work actively in Canada.
Are these speculations correct?
Has Canada joined the list of "pls don't come "
Thanks all.
Alot of things has changed my friend, CEC has been cancelled( we hope liberal party brings it back), the economy is down and the landscape labourer job is almost impossible to find nowadays as Alberta economy is in a recession due to oil price, and it is dragging other provinces down with it e.g Sask and I believe Nova Scotia and some other Eastern provinces, since alot of people come to work in Alberta to support their family back home in the east. Normally, people run away from such jobs but nowadays, people would take any job. In as much as everything the person you quoted said was right, but you can also judge the amount of work he did to raise the money just for one term. What if he or she had no family member to support with the other two terms ??

Mind you, most common jobs available for students are still minimum wage job were you would even be lucky to get 30 hours a week during summer holidays. The young fella that wrote that up there was just lucky to even get that job (when the economy was buoyant) that afforded him the opportunity to raise that kind of money.

In addition to what justwise n saxywale@gmail said, a student can only work 20hours a week during school term usually minimum wage. That money would only be "chop" money.

Best bet is to search for schools with coop options, and of course, you would still need support from home or wherever as coop would just make life a little easy and pay more than minimum wage, but also have in mind that coop jobs are not guaranteed by the schools.

Tnks alot Princy.
In summary one needs to source funds and finish the academic program b4 one can truly expect to earn good moni.
Let him hop his faith meets with Goodluck.

Tell those people to stop smoking cheap weed. 3K a month as a student? Yes you can do two jobs but like saxywale explained your chances of making that amount a month is remotely slim.
I am going to quote someone from the travelling to Canada page, I can't place the poster now, but I would love Saxywale and Justwise to comment on this post pls.
I say it was tough because it requires a lot of hard work not compared tto what we are used to in Nigeria. If you wanna transition into a permanent resident in this country, youve gotta follow certain rules like keeping a job for a certain period, which is usually 1 year to be eligible to apply under the Canadian Experience Class CEC (you can read up on CEC online). many jobs; especially oil field jobs (white or blue collar) require you to put in lots of overtime. I had to work 12 hours a day for six days a week not stop for a period of 5months. It is really stressfull plus youve gotta brace up for the weather if you are required to work outside, which is really really cold (as cold as -30 to -40 degrees) up north Alberta.

Now i studied for 3 semesters in total out of which my folks payed for two semesters. i remember i took a summer semester off to go hustle in Alberta for 4 months in 2013 summer and I literally worked for 12 hours everyday from monday to saturday, as a landscape labourer. It was a really tough job for tough men only. but I made my tuition fees within that period ($8,000) while i was paying rent and other bills and I still had enough money saved that lasted me thru my final semester back in Ontario. I must have made $14,000 during that 4 month summer break but i spent it all on my tuition fees, flight tickets, bills bills bills.

Good news was that in this part of the world, there are lots of job opportunities that pay well, but only wise people can manage their finances because everything around is expensive too. There was no way i could have had a legit job in naija, without connections, without being the son of a politician or a crook and make take home after taxes $14,000 in four months.

IS THIS POSSIBLE?? huh
