Ukraine claims it destroyed Russian Train in Melitopol; says high-ranking Russian soldiers killed

On Thursday, the Ukrainian forces claimed that they blew up a Russian armoured train that was carrying Kremlin's troop members alongside military equipment.

This comes a day after guerrillas in Melitopol claimed they "eliminated high-ranking Russian servicemen," Ukraine's Zaporizhia Regional Military Administration informed, according to Newsweek.

Taking to their Telegram channel, the Zaporizhia administration shared information regarding the killings of high-ranking Russian officials but did not specify the exact tally of Russian servicemen that were slain by the Ukrainian troops.

It also did not divulge the identity of the slain servicemen. According to Newsweek, the Ukrainian military on Wednesday also shared a video depicting their troops attacking and destroying the Russian BMP tank and blasting Kremlin troops.

Newsweek spoke to Ukrainian soldiers, who claimed that the 45th Air Assault Brigade successfully bombed a Russian ammo depot and armoured vehicles.

Taking to Twitter, Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser at Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs, shared a social media post stating that Ukrainian forces blew up the armoured Russian train.

"Partisans have blown up the occupier's armoured train in Melitopol. An explosive charge detonated under the train car carrying the personnel. The railway tracks are damaged. The number of casualties and fatalities is now being specified, " he wrote.

However, Russia is yet to confirm this development, something Ukraine claims Russia is concealing from the rest of the world.

Notably, Melitopol, located in southeastern Ukraine, was previously under the control of Russian forces, however, the latest incident indicates that the Ukrainian troops are advancing to retake their land.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea fired three short-range ballistic missiles toward the sea on Thursday, South Korea’s military said, in the latest of a series of weapons demonstrations this year that came just hours after it confirmed its first case of the coronavirus since the pandemic began.

The launches could underscore North Korea’s determination to press ahead with its efforts to expand its arsenal despite the virus outbreak to rally support behind the leader, Kim Jong Un, and keep up pressure on its rivals amid long-dormant nuclear diplomacy.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement the three missiles launched from the North’s capital region on Thursday afternoon flew toward the waters off the country’s eastern coast.

It said South Korea’s military has boosted its readiness and surveillance while maintaining close coordination with the United States.
Japan also detected the North Korean launches.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida instructed officials to do their utmost to analyze the launch, ensure safety of aircraft and vessels in the area and take precaution and readiness for any possible emergencies, according to his office.

The Japanese coast guard said that a possible ballistic missile from North Korea was believed to have landed at sea. It urged vessels around the Japanese coasts to watch out for falling objects and report them to the authorities.

Earlier Thursday, North Korean state media confirmed the country’s first COVID-19 infections as Kim ordered nationwide lockdowns to slow the spread of the virus. Kim also ordered officials to bolster the country’s defense posture to avoid any security vacuum.

In recent months, North Korea has test-launched a spate of missiles in what experts call an attempt to modernize its weapons and pressure the United States and its allies into accepting it as a nuclear state and relax sanctions on the North.

Some observers say that despite the elevated anti-virus steps, North Korea would likely continue its weapons tests to try to boost public morale at home and strengthen loyalty toward the Kim leadership.

Thursday’s launches were the North’s first weapons fired since since the inauguration of new conservative South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Tuesday. Yoon’s office said his national security adviser Kim Sung-han was planning to convene a meeting to discuss the launches.

North Korea has a history of rattling new governments in Seoul and Washington in an apparent bid to boost its bargaining chips in future negotiations. The North Korean nuclear threat will likely top the agenda when Yoon meets visiting U.S. President Joe Biden in Seoul next week.

NATO expects the Nordic countries’ membership bid will not be hindered by Ankara, whose concerns will be addressed.

Finland, Sweden announced intention to join NATO

Finland and Sweden on Sunday took firm steps to join NATO in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, breaking away from a tradition of non-alignment and neutrality.

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto confirmed that his country would apply to join, while Sweden’s ruling Social Democrats announced an official policy change that would pave the way for their country to apply within days.

“Today the Swedish Social Democratic Party took a historic decision to say yes to apply for a membership in the NATO defence alliance,” Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde tweeted.

“The Russian invasion of Ukraine has deteriorated the security situation for Sweden and Europe as a whole.”

Any decision on NATO enlargement requires approval by all 30 allies and their parliaments.

Ankara, a NATO member for 70 years, is under immense pressure to yield to the accession of Finland and Sweden, which would hugely strengthen the alliance in the Baltic Sea.

If Turkey’s objections are overcome, approval could come in just a matter of weeks, although ratification by allied parliaments could take up to a year, diplomats and officials have said.

Moscow has responded to the prospect of the Nordic states joining NATO by threatening retaliation, including unspecified “military-technical measures”.

Finland’s Niinisto, who spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, said their conversation was measured and did not contain any threats.

“Putin confirmed that he thinks it’s a mistake. We are not threatening you. Altogether, the discussion was very, could I say, calm and cool,” Niinisto said in an interview with CNN.

However, Georgia left the CIS because of Russia's annexation of south Ossetia & Abkhazia,in Georgia in 2008.

Ukraine,one of the founding members of the CIS also left the CIS in 2014 because of Russia's annexation of Crimea.

My question is, how can you be a leader of a union & be fighting, conquering & occupying your own members territories ?
