The UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has revealed she wants to send weapons to Ukraine’s neighbour Moldova to defend against a potential strike from Russia. The Foreign Secretary wants the country to be ‘equipped to Nato standard’ and is discussing the prospect with allies. Truss said she wants ensure Ukraine is ‘permanently able to defend itself’, and this also applies to other ‘vulnerable states’ such as Moldova, which is not in Nato. She said this is important, given Vladimir Putin has been ‘clear about his ambitions to create a greater Russia’. ‘What we’re working on at the moment is a joint commission with Ukraine and Poland on upgrading Ukrainian defences to Nato standard,’ Truss told the Telegraph. ‘So we will scope out what that looks like, what the Ukrainians need. The question then is how do you maintain that over time ? ‘How do we ensure that there is deterrence by denial, that Ukraine is permanently able to defend itself and how do we guarantee that happens ? That’s what we are working on at the moment. ‘And that also applies to other vulnerable states such as Moldova. Because again, the threat is broader from Russia, we also need to make sure that they are equipped to Nato standards.’ Pressed on whether she wants to see Western weaponry and intelligence provided to Moldova, Ms Truss said: ‘I would want to see Moldova equipped to Nato standard. This is a discussion we’re having with our allies.’ She said that just because Putin’s attempts to take Kyiv weren’t successful, it doesn’t mean he’s abandoned his ambitions of seizing territory in Eastern Europe. An aide told the Telegraph that ‘Nato standard’ would involve members of the alliance supplying modern equipment to replace Soviet era gear. Moldovan troops would also be provided training on how to use the new weaponry. It comes as the Prime Minister spoke to Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the global response to the conflict in Ukraine. Boris Johnson emphasised that Finland and Sweden would be valuable additions to the Nato, No 10 said. Mr Erdogan said he opposed their accession to the military alliance – accusing the pair of not taking a ‘clear stance’ against groups his country perceives to be terrorists. https://www.google.com/amp/s/metro.co.uk/2022/05/21/uk-wants-to-arm-moldova-to-nato-standard-to-guard-against-russia-16684697/amp/ Also Read : Turkey set terms for Finland and Sweden to Join NATO https://www.nairaland.com/7128682/turkey-sets-demands-not-opposed

marvin906:Thank you very much. But Trump threatened to pull the United States out of the NATO alliance. Did you see any one going to beg him not to do it ? With all the Financial, Military and Leadership capacity of the United States, nobody begged Trump not to abandon NATO. Emmanuel Macron, Angela Merkel and other European Union leaders were even talking about forming their own military alliance then. Because according to them, they don't find a reliable partner in the United States. But how things have changed with the emergence of Joe Biden as President. My point is...... Nobody is indispensable in the NATO alliance. |
NOETHNICITY:1- I am commenting as if my country is a member of NATO, you said.,....... You are talking as if you know me and where I am from. Some of you guys just assume that every body on Nairaland is a total Nigerian with a phone somewhere in Naija commenting on Nairaland. Are there not Nigerians with Dual citizenship ? So nobody outside Nigeria comments on Nairaland ? For your information, I am currently not in Naija. 2 - Turkeys NATO membership is paining me so much, you said........ ![]() No comment on this one because it is ludicrous. 3 - If Turkey leaves, the bloc will become weaker, you said ... Hmmmm...... Tell me what I don't know. How many Nuclear Weapons do they have ?....... Zero.... Nil..... 0 So their exit is not a game changer. Even France and the United kingdom with Nuclear Weapons can decide to make Yanger and Threaten to leave NATO but guess what, the alliance would still stand strong. I will tell you how shortly..... When Trump said he would pull the United States from NATO, did you see any European countries beg him not to do it ? No nation is indispensable.... Including the United States. If this 3 Nuclear Weapons States leave the NATO alliance for the Non Nuclear Weapons States, then the 27 States would resort to Nuclear Proliferation Just to better Protect themselves and nobody then would stop them. Not even the P5 of the United Nations security council can stop them because they are vulnerable. So it is in the best interest of all NATO members to stay put and settle whatever difference they have. For your information, I have nothing against Turkey's membership of NATO. But I strongly believe that if you are in an alliance, you should stick with the principles of the alliance. Not that you are in bed today with Russia and in bed tomorrow with NATO. Turkey na Ashawo Nation that is sleeping with everyone ? Which brings me to your initial question.... 4- Why did Turkey Buy the S-400 ? I will give you several reasons....... A - - Turkey said purchasing the S-400 was a necessity as it was unable to procure air defence systems from any NATO ally on satisfactory terms. In 2013 and 2017, the United States offered the Raytheon's Patriot missile system to Turkey but they turned down the offer because they were not given the systems sensitive missile technology. The United States even repeatedly offered Defensive military equipments to help meet their Operational needs that was a better answer in terms of the NATO interoperability of the Turkish Defense Forces. But Turkey turned down those offers too. Probably because they believed Russian claims that the S-400 is superior to its French or US-made rivals. But in 2017, Turkey stated it would buy Russia's S-400 missile defense system because the United States had dragged its feet in selling an American alternative. B - - Price was another factor. The S-400 was more affordable. The S-400 was at least twice as cheap as the US system Patriot-2 . C - - A Purely political decision. Turkey wanted to signal to the US and other allies about her Sovereign approach to defense. It was also an assertion by Turkey of its independence as a major regional power. President Erdogan, already in power for more than 10 years, wanted to fashion Turkey as an independent and influential power in the region, no longer beholden to the United States and no longer in need of the American nuclear umbrella that protected it for decades. D - - Turkey wanted to make parts for S-400. There are next generation systems coming up and Turkey expects to gain access to some of Russian technology. Several S-400 components are supposedly to be produced on Turkish soil. Nuts and Bolts and Batteries would be produced on Turkish territory according to the terms they got from Russia. E - - Military Advantage. The S-400 provides the Turkish armed forces with an advanced weapon capable of covering most of Syria and their old adversary Greece. The purchase of the system was part of a policy to better protect itself from wars raging on it's borders and to make the country's defence industry more self-sufficient. F - - 2016 Failed Coup Attempt. President Erdogan had accused the United States of granting refuge to the alleged coup plotter in the 2016 failed Coup Attempt in Turkey. The following year he ordered for the S-400. G - - America's Alliance with the YPG. Erdogan was also infuriated by the US alliance with the Kurdish militia in Syria -- the YPG -- in the campaign to defeat ISIS. Turkey regards the YPG as a terrorist group affiliated with the PKK, which has fought the Turkish state for more than three decades. President Erdogan was not happy when the United States considered training a mainly Kurdish contingent to guard the Turkish border. H - - The War in Syria. President Vladimir Putin seduced Turkey into joining the "Astana" process with Russia and Iran on the future of Syria, essentially sidelining the United Nations and the US. Erdogan needed Russian support to prevent an offensive by the Assad regime against the rebel-held province of Idlib, where Turkey has peacekeeping troops but also backs several rebel factions. If Turkey wanted to have any sway on the future shape of Syria, it has to engage with Russia. Buying the S-400 helped to cement a necessary if not necessarily warm relationship. I - - Turkey's Desire for Defense Independence. Another reason for the purchase is that the Turkish government made it clear that they have long wanted to develop an indigenous defence technology. Turkey does not want to be dependent on Western-originated weapons in the defence industry. Thus, it wanted to create diversity in defence. Turkey invested billions of dollars to develop its defence industry and gain independence in domestic arms production. The partnership with Russia was expected to boost Turkey's defence industry and serve the country's goal of diversifying its arms suppliers. That was why I said whatever it was above (or a combination of Factors) that prompted them to buy the S-400 should also prompt them to buy Russian fighter jets........ And Russia has some good jets. But NATO is complaining of security risks which Turkey has tried to downplay. But at the end of the day, it is my sincere belief that Turkey would fall in line with other NATO members so that Finland and Sweden can join NATO. |
NOETHNICITY:I have answered your question with another question. Check the link... https://www.nairaland.com/7135040/senator-menendez-threatens-turkey-over/1#113028557 Whatever prompted them to buy the S400 should also prompt them to buy Russian fighter jets. The S400 from Russia and the F-35 from the United States would raise serious security concerns......... If you can understand this, then I Salute You. Better still they can choose to leave the NATO alliance if they believe that they are not well treated....... Though this is highly unlikely. Russia would accept them gladly into the CSTO . After all we already have Turkmenistan there. So Turkey can choose to go there and complement Turkmenistan. |
Awoleesu: ![]() Ok I see.... We are obviously on the same page but different paragraph. Las Las , Erdogan mind go come down. He just want to score cheap Political points. I understand that there is an upcoming election in Turkey. |
maasoap:https://www.nairaland.com/7135040/senator-menendez-threatens-turkey-over/1#113028557 If you can deduce your answer from my earlier post, then I Salute your Intelligence. |
Awoleesu:Lol..... ![]() If they feel insecure in NATO then let them do the needful. Exit is free of charge. Turkey can go if they choose to, nobody would veto their decision. But guess what.... Turkey needs NATO more than NATO needs her. Turkey has fought something like 12 wars against USSR / Russia and has lost 11. Now answer this question.... Since they joined NATO, how many War have they fought with Russia ? |
olalat:Have you cared to research the reasons why they cannot partake of the F-35 program since they bought the S400 from Russia ? Since they bought the S400 from Russia, then they should also buy Russian fighter jets. So that when Russian technicians are in Turkey to Service and Test the S400, They would also have access to Russian Jets. It is all about Avoiding Security risks in this continuous battle between the East and West. You think the United States is stupid to allow Russian technicians access to the F-35 anyhow they like ? How many Russian military technicians do you see in NATO countries with Access to classified equipment and Weapons. When you see Erdogan (The next time you are in Turkey), Tell him to follow a single alliance and not behave like Nigerian Politicians that decamp here and there. |
So sad that a bright young man has to die because of the miscalculation of his leaders. RIP to the Dead. |
ken6488:Lol..... ![]() Putin's Russia missed Sunday School.... You dont treat people, especially your neighbors, anyhow because you are rich. |
These guys are ready to fight to the last man for their Homeland. The same morale is missing on the Russian side that is why they are being battered at strategic points. Slava Ukraini..... Glory to the Heroes. |
ken6488:So because you have a massive land mass, you feel untouchable and indispensable ? You can do anything you like and damn the consequences ? If that is your Approach, then the world cut ties with you gradually and leave you to eat your food and use your energy yourself. |
skoskosko:Very Sensible comment. There are no winners in a Nuclear War. I pity those that are clamouring for a Nuclear War. They would not be spared when it happens. |
Islamophobia everywhere... I don't blame some of these nations because Extremism in Islam and Islamic Extremists are wrecking havoc globally. Sometimes I wonder if they read the same Quran as other Muslims. |
ken6488:The only thing I am accepting is the fact that it is wrong to Invade a sovereign nation and attempt to change internationally recognized Borders at gun point. Russia can shift power to any direction they want. The world would forever remain East versus West. But with Power comes Responsibility If with little power today, they are not only Invading but grabbing Territories, just imagine what Putin's Russia would do if Ultimate Power is with them. Then your Nation would be part of the Proposed Restoration of the Expanded Soviet Union. That is Grand Plan of Putin's Russia, that nobody wants to talk about. That was why NATO was formed and even their long standing neutral neighbors are no longer feeling safe. |
Kingsnairaland:So is it now ok to Invade a sovereign nation and Grab (Annex) their land ? What are we talking about here. If the Same Russia Invade your nation and collect your Land after conducting a sham referendum, would you see it as normal ? Invasion is one thing...... The East and West are guilty of this.. But Annexation and Land grabbing is a whole new level in this generation. If Annexation and Land grabbing is the new normal then many African countries would gladly call on the West to Invade and Annex their land. Having said that, I have said it before that the Western part of Ukraine cannot live with the Eastern part of Ukraine. Separation is inevitable. But not with the Aggressive manner Putin is going about it. Diplomatic channels must be fully exhausted. Even his foreign minister made this point to him in February before he decided to Invade Ukraine. |
Truvelisback:Ok |
Dvdpity:You must be very Stupid.... Since you cannot reply my comment without insults, I would not dignify your comment with a response. Idiot.... You just joined the list of the Foolish people I don't reply their comments in Nairaland because like a Big Fool, they cannot make their point without insults. Now Get Lost from my mention.. You Dirty Animal. |
ken6488:Keep encouraging yourself.... Baby food formula shortage in America is due to the recall made by ABBOTT. Kindly Go and do simple research before you bask in Russian propaganda. So you really believed that Russia was the one supplying the United States with baby food formula ? Na wa for your matured mind. You mentioned Fuel, Once again, let me encourage you to stop listening to Russian propaganda Who is deceiving you that there is no Fuel in America ? I guess you have not heard of the United States Strategic Petroleum Reserve. So Kindly check the link below and Re-educate yourself. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_Petroleum_Reserve_(United_States) The Biden Administration recently ordered the use of the SPR. The Hike in fuel price globally which we have dubbed Putin's Price Hike.... Is due to the reckless behavior of your Aggressive leader when he Invaded Ukraine. That is simple Economics. Whenever anything touches a major supplier of Crude Oil, price would go up. If Niger Delta Militants blast one pipeline today, the market would react and price would go up. Famine.... Is there famine in America ? The famine you saw could be the one in your backyard in North East Nigeria. |
Turkey bought the S400 from Russia... Turkey wants to remain in the F-35 program.... That is not commendable. Who is Erdogan's Turkey actually working for ? Where does their allegiance truly lie...... To NATO or to The East ? There are Security risks For the West with Turkey using the Russian S400 . |
A congregation of Strange Bed fellows. I would take this people serious when Nigeria Join the G20. |
Rastaramsey:That is the plan... To weaken Russia and prevent the restoration of the old Soviet Union. And Putin is playing into the hands of the West day by day. |
agabaI23:Highly possible...... ![]() |
[s] DerrickzB:[/s] Keep deceiving yourself.... The full effect of the Sanctions is yet to hit the Russian Economy.... Putin knows what is coming but his Nairaland commandos like you don't know Or you choose to hide the truth the same way his military commanders are hiding the truth of Russian personnel Casualties from their family members back home in Russia. By the way.... Did you read the first post ? No you didn't..... A typical Russian approach that is causing them massive failure and defeat in Ukraine. Make sure you look before you leap. David Beasley said the food is for the poorest of the poor. Majority of the people that would benefit are not in Europe but in Africa and Middle eastern countries. https://www.wfp.org/countries?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=11709431903&utm_content=115463947364&gclsrc=aw.ds&gclid=Cj0KCQjw1ZeUBhDyARIsAOzAqQKCWte4_ISZQlvK7GxLzCPyPMyQOGngz0Oo5MhLpxujmSRfVpDdrykaAlouEALw_wcB |
I thought Putin and his Nairaland Separatists said that the Sanctions were ineffective and useless ? Why is he asking for them to be lifted ? By the 3rd and 4th quarter of this year, we would know whether the Sanctions are useless and ineffective. Putin is said to love Africans... Now is the time to show that love unconditionally... Africans and middle eastern countries would have agreed to lift Sanctions but unfortunately, they don't have the power to do it. So Putin, show your unconditional love for Africa and your troops in Nairaland by opening the Ports you wrongfully lay claim to. |
