Hungary's President Katalin Novak at her inauguration ceremony on Saturday condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine and said her first trip would take her to Poland, in an apparent gesture to mend relations with Warsaw.

Hungary's rejection of sending weapons shipments to neighbouring Ukraine and its opposition to a planned European Union embargo on Russian oil imports has weighed on relations between Budapest and Warsaw, whose two nationalist governments have been long-time allies in the EU.

"On Tuesday, 17 May, I am travelling to Warsaw to meet the President of the Polish people. Mr. President, dear Andrzej (Duda), I thank you for the opportunity to talk as befits friends!," Novak said in her inauguration speech.

"We condemn Putin's aggression, the armed invasion of a sovereign state. We say eternally no to every effort aiming at the restoration of the Soviet Union," she added.

She said the war in Ukraine was also "fought against us peace -loving Hungarians", adding that Hungary demanded that war crimes be investigated and punished.

Orban has also condemned Russia's attack on Ukraine but has avoided personal criticism of President Vladimir Putin and has been strongly opposed to any sanctions on Russian energy.

Dependence on Russian oil in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia poses the biggest obstacle to an embargo deal that the European Commission, the EU executive, proposed in early May in response to Russia's Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine.

The West has declared a "total hybrid war" against Russia and it is hard to predict how long it will last, Moscow's foreign minister has said.

Sergei Lavrov said the consequences of the war in Ukraine will be felt around the world.

But speaking about sanctions on Russia, he warned: "Western politicians should understand their efforts to isolate our country are in vain."

And he went on to accuse Western nations of stealing other countries' assets and losing their reputation as reliable partners.

"In the future, the world economy will be de-Americanised," he said in a speech on the 80th day of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"We did everything to avoid a direct clash - but now that the challenge has been thrown down, we of course accept it," Mr Lavrov continued.

"We are no strangers to sanctions: they were almost always there in one form or another."

His comments come after a meeting of G7 foreign ministers took place earlier on Saturday, which saw the nations sign a statement saying they will continue to put economic pressure on Russia.

The group, which is made up of the UK, USA, Canada, Japan, Germany, France and Italy, also backed giving more aid and arms to Ukraine and expediting its efforts to "end reliance on Russian energy supplies".

"We reaffirm our determination to further increase economic and political pressure on Russia, continuing to act in unity," a joint statement read.

Putin warns Finland it would be a 'mistake' to join NATO

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned Finland's leader that abandoning neutrality would be a "mistake" but that there are no security threats to its capital, Helsinki.

In response, President Sauli Niinisto told Mr Putin that his demands for countries to avoid joining NATO, together with the invasion of Ukraine, have changed Finland's security environment.

In a readout of a phone call between the two leaders, Finland's president said: "The conversation was direct and straight-forward and it was conducted without aggravations. Avoiding tensions was considered important."

Russia's Kremlin described the call as a "frank exchange of views" - normally a diplomatic euphemism for a difficult conversation.

Finland's NATO membership bid is expected to be followed by a similar move from Sweden.

An expansion of NATO would be a blow to Mr Putin, who undertook the war in, what he said was, a bid to thwart the alliance's easterly advance.

Zelensky says he called for recognition of Russia as a 'terrorist state' in meeting with US Senate GOP delegation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with a congressional delegation led by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in Kyiv Saturday, and called for Russia to officially be recognized as a "terrorist state," he said Saturday in his nightly address.

Zelensky said he discussed US support for Ukraine and tightening sanctions on Russia with the delegation.

"I believe that this visit once again demonstrates the strength of bipartisan support for our state, the strength of ties between the Ukrainian and American nations," Zelensky said.

CNN previously reported Zelensky has asked President Joe Biden to designate Russia a state sponsor of terrorism.

The Ukrainian president added in his address Saturday he "expressed gratitude for the historic decision to renew the Lend Lease program" during the GOP delegation's visit.

Biden earlier this week signed into law the Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act. The new law, which eases some of the requirements for the US to lend or lease military equipment to Ukraine, passed with a bipartisan majority in the US House and Senate.

Its sponsors said the legislation gives Biden much broader authority to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia and addresses how the US can get weapons to Ukraine faster.

Zelensky said earlier Saturday on his Instagram account the GOP delegation visit was "a strong signal of bipartisan support for Ukraine from the United States Congress and the American people."

He added on Instagram: "Thank you for your leadership in helping us in our struggle not only for our country, but also for democratic values and freedoms. We really appreciate it."

Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, John Barrasso of Wyoming and John Cornyn of Texas were also seen meeting Zelensky in video and photos posted to the Ukrainian president's social media accounts.

It was unclear Saturday evening whether the delegation was still in the Ukrainian capital.

McConnell and the other senators became the latest US officials to visit Ukraine since Russia invaded the eastern European nation in late February.

Two weeks ago, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi led the first congressional delegation to Ukraine since war broke out. Pelosi, joined by several senior House Democrats, met with Zelensky in Kyiv.

A statement posted on Zelensky's official website following the meeting with the GOP senators noted the Ukrainian leader "expressed hope that the US Senate will promptly approve a package of additional funding to support the Ukrainian people."

Yes NATO has expanded east in recent times but you must remember that from 1997 - 2004, they never deployed any military troops to the Baltic states.

It was after Putin seized Crimea in 2014, that NATO moved troops to the Baltic states because the land grabbing nature of the Russian federation is now displaying it's true colors.

Putin's Russia is not afraid of military invasion from NATO because that would lead to the horrors of a global war, which must be avoided according to Putin during his victory day speech.

NATO does not even have the appetite to Invade Russia because they are also aware that there are no winners in a nuclear War.

It is well noted and Time would tell.

I am well aware of Companies that have started paying for Russian Energy in roubles.

But the European Union over-reliance on Russian Energy poses a huge security risk.

The Russian War chest cannot be continually funded by the EU, for them to now use it to Invade their European neighbors tomorrow.

Russia has this "untrustworthy image" about them and that was why the NATO alliance was formed.

The same untrustworthy image is now finding expression with their invasion of Ukraine. The European Union has no choice but to respond.

Nobody would have thought in January that Finland and Sweden would be talking of NATO membership In May. But it is happening before our very eyes.

To me, President Erdogan is looking for a bargaining chip. He would eventually say yes.

Another hurdle is Hungary. Victor Orban is strong ally of the Kremlin and may not vote Yes.

The Georgian president has also said be would vote No. But he also said "if the request is sent through a lower level, he may not have the chance to oppose the process".

So time would tell how this would play out when they are formally invited to join the alliance.
