Russia’s largest warship The Moskva sinks near Ukrainian coast after missile attack

Russia’s largest warship has exploded and sunk as crew desperately abandoned the ship following a Ukrainian land-based missile attack.

The Russian Defence Ministry confirmed The Moskva suffered “significant damage” after “a fire broke out” but said it was still investigating the cause of the blast.

Ukrainian officials on Thursday claimed the flagship cruiser of Russia’s Black Sea fleet was struck by two R-360 Neptune class anti-ship missiles, causing it to explode and sink near Odessa.

Russian media outlets reported the ship’s 500 crew members were evacuated after ammunition on board accidentally detonated.

Open-source intelligence analysts picked up distress signals from the warship which communicated “SOS” and “sinking” in morse code.

Severe storms were reported over the Black Sea at the time of attack.

Unconfirmed reports suggested the Russian cruiser was distracted by a Ukrainian drone in a targeted missile attack and was unable to redirect its defences in time.

The warship Moskva gained notoriety for its standoff with Ukrainian border guards at the beginning of the Ukranian war.

Border guards at Snake Island famously told the Russian warship to “go f**k yourself” via radio when responding to demands they surrender.

The sinking of Moskva now leaves Russia without its flagship cruiser and was perceived to be the Black Sea Fleet’s best defense against Ukrainian attack.

Originally designed to sink US navy nuclear powered air-craft carrier, the vessel is fitted with 16 large supersonic anti-ship missiles as well as torpedo tubes and a helicopter.

The Project 1164 Slava class is susceptible to explosions due to its design which abides by the Russian philosophy of packing high numbers of large weapons onto the hull of the ship.

Videos Show Police Officer Fatally Shooting Black Man in Michigan

Patrick Lyoya, 26, was killed by a Grand Rapids police officer last week during a traffic stop. Activists said the shooting followed years of unheeded calls for changes to the police force.

The police in Grand Rapids, Mich., released videos on Wednesday showing a white officer fatally shooting Patrick Lyoya, a 26-year-old Black man, after a struggle during a traffic stop last week.

The officer, who has not been named, was lying on the back of Mr. Lyoya before he appeared to shoot him in the head. In the seconds before the shooting, Mr. Lyoya and the officer wrestled on the ground and seemed to be fighting for control of the officer’s Taser.

“When I saw the video, it was painful to watch,” Mark Washington, the Grand Rapids city manager, said. “And I immediately asked, ‘What caused this to happen, and what more could have been done to prevent this from occurring?’”

Even before the release of the footage, the case exposed longstanding tensions in Grand Rapids, a city of about 200,000 people where 18 percent of residents are Black. Activists aired their frustration and grief on Tuesday night during a City Commission meeting, speaking for hours about what they described as years of inaction on policing issues by Grand Rapids leaders, and then protested through the evening on Wednesday after the videos were released.

The investigation into the officer’s actions was ongoing, officials said on Wednesday, and no charging decision had been made. Chief Eric Winstrom of the Grand Rapids police said he was not aware of any weapons other than the officer’s gun and Taser being found at the scene. Police body camera video shows the officer telling Mr. Lyoya that he is pulling him over because his license plates do not match his car.

A New York Times investigation last fall revealed that American police officers, over the previous five years, had killed more than 400 motorists who were not wielding a gun or knife or under pursuit for a violent crime. The Times found that police culture and court precedents significantly overstated the danger to officers at vehicle stops.

Police killings of Black men have dominated national discussions about law enforcement in recent years, particularly after the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer in 2020 touched off protests across the country, including in Grand Rapids.

There are more than 1,500 unclaimed bodies of Russian soldiers in the Dnipro morgue – the deputy mayor.

The city’s deputy mayor Mikhailo Lysenko said on Wednesday that the bodies of more than 1,500 Russian soldiers were kept in a morgue in Dnipro, a major industrial city in eastern Ukraine.

A Ukrainian navy missile battery reportedly has struck the Russian navy cruiser Moskva off the coast of Odessa, a strategic port city on the Black Sea in southwest Ukraine.

Multiple Ukrainian government officials claimed Wednesday that a Neptune anti-ship battery, apparently hidden in or around Odessa, scored two hits on Moskva, setting the 612-foot vessel ablaze.

Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Kyiv, announced the strike. So did Maksym Marchenko, head of the administration in Odessa. “Neptune missiles … caused very serious damage to the Russian ship,” Marchenko said.

An audio recording, purportedly of Ukrainian troops reporting the attack on the cruiser, circulated on social media.

Russian state media confirmed the ship was on fire and the crew evacuated, but blamed the blaze on an accidental ammunition explosion.

It’s possible Moscow is trying to muddy the waters, so to speak, in order to rob Kyiv of an information victory.

To be fair, Ukrainian sources more than once have reported hits on Russian warships blockading Odessa and other ports since Russia widened its war on Ukraine starting the night of Feb. 23.

Just one report is verified. Ukrainian troops in the besieged city of Mariupol in late March scored a hit on a Russian patrol boat using an old anti-tank guided missile.

Compared to a Konkurs ATGM, Neptune is a much more sophisticated and, to Russian sailors, dangerous weapon. But the pre-war Ukrainian navy probably possessed just one Neptune battery out of the half-dozen or so it planned to induct this spring.

A Neptune battery includes a truck-mounted launcher with four rounds, a command truck and a pair of resupply trucks plus links to a mobile Mineral-U radar with a 370-mile range.

If the Ukrainians really did hit Moskva with a Neptune or two, it means they first managed to cobble together, man and deploy at least one complete battery with all its supporting systems—all in the middle of a devastating war.

It also means they fed accurate targeting data to the battery, via a drone, land-based radar or some other sensor. None of this is easy, but it’s certainly possible.

Still, the claimed attack on Moskva, if confirmed, would be consistent with the course of the broader naval campaign. The Russian Black Sea Fleet, of which the Moskva is the flagship, controls the waters around Ukraine but has been unable totally to suppress Ukraine’s coastal defenses.

Those defenses—mines, anti-tank missiles, long-range ballistic missiles and armed drones—make any amphibious operation against a Ukrainian port extremely risky for the attackers. The fate of the Russian landing ship Saratov, which burst into flames while pier-side in the occupied port of Berdyansk on March 24, underscored that risk.

They knew once they allowed us get it right, we will be far more developed than many European countries and wouid have a voice in the committy of nations. Now, their chickens are coming home to roost. It serves them.right as Putin is busy using their money which he collected in the exchange of gas to build weapon house for potential attacks on them. Come to think of it, Russia is just number 8 in oil and gas endowment, while Nigeria is number 10 on the list. They're just 2 points ahead of us which means we have the capacity to also produce as much gas as Russia can do.

Go to the Niger delta and see those illegal refineries refine high quality diesel and petrol before they went and destroyed them instead of giving them licences to operate with close monitoring on quality assurance. But the west told our government to consider international trade policies and the law of comparative advantage such that Nigeria would refine our crude in countries without crude oil and natural resources and import for local consumption. There's a lot which is going on out there which 99% of Nigerians don't know jack about. Only those at the helms wouid understand what international forces mean. If they like, let the next administration spend another billions on the repair of refineries, it still won't work. Have you forgotten ajaokuta steel? I was telling some people that international forces won't allow that sector work when buhari came because once we get our steel industries running, we have the potentials of becoming as powerful as America because steel in ajaokuta is massive. No single item made of metal would have eluded us in production. Last week, the DG came out and said the sector can't work, giving reasons. I kidt laughed. Lobatan!

Putin is the only man on earth to have built something very credible only to turn around to destroy what he built because he wants more.

He built Russian economy to enviable heights, but by the time he defaults on other loan repayments, used toilet paper will be worth more than the Russian Rubble.

The last time Russia defaulted on there loan repayment was in the 80s and because of that, inflation hit at over 80%. Let see the magic Putin will perform this time around. I read he is planning to sue western countries for forcing Russia into defaulting on loan repayments.


But my question is, where is he going to sue them? At the international courts they (Russian) themselves stopped recognizing with the claim that such courts don't have jurisdiction over Russia?

Or other international bodies that are responsible for settling international financial disputes...

Putin is a very smart man who with his experience, must have seen these before the Ukrainian invasion

They way made the Russian economy to bounce back, he will do something again about this

The only thing u want African leaders to do is to learn from Europe bus to look for a way to corperated and protect the continents and don't allow any external force to commit those atrocities within the boundaries and go free without giving it a fight

He thought he could capture Kyiv in 3 days but after a month and a half, Kyiv is still standing.

He thought the comedian turn President (Zelensky) would run away at the sound of Bombs but Zelensky would forever be a national hero because he chose to fight for his country even though Joe Biden offered him a ride out of Kyiv...

He thought the west would be divided in their response to his invasion just like in 2014 but he was shocked at the Unity of their response.

He thought by now he would have less NATO FORCES in his western borders but he now has more NATO troops in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania.

He thought his own troops would do a good job in Ukraine but their Laziness and lack of skills have been exposed to the world.

He thought he got the right intel about the Ukrainian military but he has now seen the light that they (The Ukrainian people) are ready to die for their freedom and nation..

And whatever plans he has to limit the damage of Western Sanctions would be continually blocked by the West...

A meeting was held today to evaluate the effectiveness of the sanctions against Putin's Russia and to add more if necessary...

No matter the outcome of this war, Putin's Russia would never be the same again.

It would be subservient to China for a long time...

but it May not be less than what banks are giving to customers... Especially if MTN Nigeria Mobile money starts giving out soft loans like they do in Ghana and elsewhere...

CBN would work out the interest percentage payable to MOMO customers because it would be wrong for MTN to hold your money in their system and not pay you interest...

I just hope our CBN have done their homework before they issued this license to Telco Operators to start mobile money in Nigeria..

I expect Glo Nigeria to get their license soon because they are already doing mobile money transactions in Ghana.
