Programming or IT have been saturated like wise most jobs.. In the future or even now you might consider studying abroad and focus on Lab tech. It's one of the high paying jobs abroad. Infact anything in medical line.
It's upto you to choose but I would encourage you to focus your energy on lab tech. One day you might get offer abroad could be in middle east, even some west African and African countries are searching for lab techs.

Tell your friend to go to his cities immigration office and explain his condition and apply for visa extension. Then he can have enough time to buy another ticket back home. Covid 19 has caused a lot of havoc so they would understand and extend his visa.
Don't believe that transit visa thing ,he's definitely trying to get off the airport and run off not coming back. I am just guessing but from experience transit visa is not necessary for him to return home.

What kind of question is this? Even a lay man should know that you or your friend do not understand travel stuffs or you aren't truthful.
Tell your friend to find another airline like Qatar, Ethiopia, Ethihad etc You don't need any transit visa for any airline except some exclusive countries like America. Transit visa has categories which most liked by many is the A type that could allow you get into the city or out of the airport. This way many just abscond or run off in that country and not return. Many countries knows this and have put restrictions on issuance of such to especially Nigerians.
The other is that you don't need any visa to stay in the airport. You just wait in the airport for the next connecting flight to your final destination.
Why would he buy tickets without knowing this information. He can come back with most flights or raise money for him and buy another ticket.
Your friend isn't telling the truth or he's ignorance of travel processes or he wants to abscond in Hongkong.

He said she had asked him for $300 to renew her US passport from American embassy in Nigeria.

Another thing that he told me was that just before covid struck, there was a similar pandemic which happened in Nigeria early this year and that his girlfriend had contracted the disease and he had to send her $2000 for treatment. Right now he said he's broke but is waiting for like $2000 disability check from the US government next week which he will send to her as soon as the money clears.

As he was telling me this tale, I was so angry with Nigerians and how they take advantage of people in love to scam them. I wanted to swear for the scammers
