Jobs/VacanciesRe: Favouritism And The Plight Of A Nigerian Unemployed: A Threat To Nations Buildin by kingingkinging: 2:39pm On Apr 10, 2013
anelkamak: A nation is built by people and great nations are built when competent people are given the opportunity to pilot the affairs of the nation. Competency is achieved through skills and experiences developed over time. Nowadays, employers employ individuals through competency based selection processes which ranges from all sorts of aptitude tests to interviews. However, in Nigeria a third process has unofficially been added which is favouritism and if not checked will threaten our Nation building.

From my experience as a hardworking recent graduate of Chemical Engineering who just completed his National Youth Service Corp at Borno State in September, 2006, I boldly walked into the Nigerian “Labour Market” to search for good jobs which will help me develop myself and build my skills and professional career as an engineer. I went into the market with certainty that my hard work and academic success will help me to excel in every aptitude test and interview that I will find myself. I started my job search spending most of my days and nights in the cyber cafe applying for jobs. My focus initially was mainly in the oil and gas related jobs (especially the multinationals) which is the dream job for every young Nigerian engineering graduate.

Like every other recent graduate, I prepared myself for the stiff competition in the selection process and spent sleepless nights reading aptitude test materials and some interview tips. As days and months pass by, I noticed that most multinational oil and gas job opportunities are seasonal especially for graduate positions. That made me to diversify my job search from strictly multinational oil and gas companies to every other sector that have graduate positions like indigenous oil and gas sectors, banking sectors, manufacturing and so on.
In February 2007, I got a job aptitude test invitation from Schlumberger Nigeria Plc. which for me was an opportunity to give my best and secure a dream job. I prepared very hard for the test and two days to the test date, I moved down to Port Harcourt from Enugu to stay closer to the test venue. On the said test date, I arrived at the test venue with all the necessary credentials as stated in the invitation. I passed through the accreditation where the original copies of my credentials were checked to make sure I meet the minimum requirement for the position. After been cleared, I was directed to my sit. After we were seated, we were given all sorts of instructions as regards the test and the company. As the instructions were coming, the tension within me kept rising as that was my first job test. The profile of the company been dished out by the people conducting the exam makes me long to work for them the more, however, I decided to focus more on the two obstacle staring at me (aptitude test and interview) which I saw as the only hindrance stopping me from achieving my dream as a young engineering graduate.

When the time came, we were given the test materials and were instructed to start the test which we did and when the time elapsed, we were instructed to stop and the papers were collected. The examiners told us that the test result will be posted on the wall outside the company premises in Port Harcourt within two days and that the successful candidates will be contacted for the interview stage. The two days waiting period was filled with prayers to God to help me be among the successful candidates. Early morning on the appointed day, I went to the company but lo and behold the results have not been posted yet. I waited and while I was there, many other people came around for the same purpose. Later towards the afternoon, the results were posted and to the glory of God, my name was on the list. I jumped and thanked God in jubilation for helping me cross the first hurdle while I pray to him to accomplish the work which He has started by helping me in the second hurdle.

In the evening of that same day, I got an official invitation for the interview stage. I prepared and prayed hard and early in the morning of the interview day, I prepared and went to the venue much earlier than necessary in order to avoid any form of obstacle which might come from traffic jam and all sorts of unforeseen circumstances. I waited in the interview venue till the interview time. When the time came, we were called in for the interview by one of the interviewers. We were drilled through different stages from individual to group and hands-on in order to test our competencies in different areas. The interview finished in the evening of Friday, February 9, 2007 and by Saturday, February 10, 2007, I got an email that I was successful in the interview. I couldn’t help but to thank God for making a dream come through and for making all my hard work not to be in vain. I broadcasted the good news to my parents and they were so happy for me. I was later instructed to get my international passport ready which I borrowed money from my sister to do immediately. From my inquiry, I was told by some employees that the next stage will be medical examination and then resumption.

Lo and behold, I got a twist of my life when I waited for several months and didn’t hear anything again from the recruitment team. I couldn’t believe that this is coming from a company who made us believe that one of their codes of conduct is “zero tolerance to corruption”. I put up calls but they were never answered. I sent emails but they were never replied. Later, I happened to contact one of the guys who also passed the interview the same time and he told me that he has been called. I asked what he did that I didn’t do, that made him to be called while I wasn’t and that was when I knew that he had an uncle working in the company at that time. This was the time it done on me that although I passed the official competency based selection process stated by the company, I didn’t do well in the unofficial selection process called favouritism. I pressed hard to redress the situation but to no avail. When I saw that the situation was drifting out of my hand, I quickly got a job in the banking sector (at least to keep body and soul together) while I continuously press for the job I was denied in Schlumberger Nigeria Plc.

Although I was heartbroken, I wasn’t deterred. While in the bank, I continued trying other opportunities and as it pleases God in the same year, I got the PTDF scholarship to study my MSc at United Kingdom. I left the shores of Nigeria in 2008 for my MSc which I successfully completed in September, 2009. Immediately after that, I was offered a Scholarship by the UK Engineering and Physical Science Research Council to undertake a PhD programme, which I successfully completed in 2012 emerging as the first candidate in my faculty to have completed his PhD work before the official completion date without correction. Immediately I completed my PhD, I got an offer from one of the top Universities in South Africa to continue my research work in Low Carbon Energy Systems.

Although people might say that what happened to me is “a blessing in disguise” but I think it is high time we started exposing the evil that is happening in our society. I know there is someone out there who has been cheated because of favouritism. This eleven letter word has lead to incompetency and decay in our society. Some unqualified people have gotten into positions they never merited because of favouritism. Some people have gained admission into universities while those that are more qualified than them are left out because of favouritism. Some have even gone ahead to sale employment positions to people that can afford it while those that are qualified but don’t have the money to buy are left out.
The problem caused by favouritism is hydra headed. It discourages hard work and competition while at the same time promotes corruption. It gives room for people that are not qualified to handle the affairs of the nation while the qualified are left out. It is also against the rule of law.

Let us as a nation learn to build based on merit. Let employees employ based on merit. Let government appoint people based on merit so that Nigeria will achieve her merited growth.
I indulge you to join in this fight against favouritism by mentioning any company, university or government parastatal that have denied you anything whatsoever (from employment, admission, promotion etc) because of favouritism. It is high time we started to expose the evil in our society.

By Dr. Engr. M Aneke.
Very pathetic but that is the reality.

I also experienced such on different occassions. They have used that to discourage hardwork in the country and as a result, an average Nigerian believes in whom you know more that what you know.

naptu2: Lots of Africanness on display, from Gelede to Egungun, etc (I'll post pictures of them). However, the carnival was brought to Lagos in the late 1800s by returnee slaves from Brazil known as Aguda or Popo.

The Lagos Carnival is part of the Black Heritage Festival with events that include boat regatta, masquerade displays etc. The chairman of the festival, Professor Wole Soyinka has declared that this year's festival will have a Brazilian theme to celebrate the relationship between Lagos and Brazil (we have the Agudas of Campos Square in Lagos and the orishas are still worshipped in Brazil [there's even a place names Bekuta, from Abeokuta, in Brazil).

While JP Clark is know for peotry, Ola Rotimi for drama, Chinua Achebe for novel (mostly fictions); Soyinka is known for all. He is seen in the same level with Williams Shakespeare whom the literary says he shares the same initials (WS) with. Apart from these, Soyinka is an activist and essayist. As an activist, he fights bad government. Whereas Achebe spoke only when Igbo people are affected, Soyinka speaks for everybody. As an essayist, he bares his mind on topical issues. For example during the same-sex bill controversy in the Senate, he wrote "Sexual Minority And Legislative Zealotry". This makes Soyinka to be known even by those that don't read books. Try this, ask or show a junior secondary school student Soyinka's picture, he will say he sees him on TV and newspapers. LiteratureRe: Wole Soyinka: Things You Never Knew About Him by kingingkinging: 2:38pm On Mar 28, 2013
Life from google/ wikipeadia:

Akinwande Oluwole "Wole" Soyinka (born 13 July 1934) is a Nigerian writer, notable especially as a playwright and poet; he was awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Literature, the first person in Africa and the diaspora to be so honoured.
Soyinka was born into a Yoruba family in Abeokuta. After study in Nigeria and the UK, he worked with the Royal Court Theatre in London. He went on to write plays that were produced in both countries, in theatres and on radio. He took an active role in Nigeria's political history and its struggle for independence from Great Britain. In 1965, he seized the Western Nigeria Broadcasting Service studio and broadcast a demand for the cancellation of the Western Nigeria Regional Elections. In 1967 during the Nigerian Civil War, he was arrested by the federal government of General Yakubu Gowon and put in solitary confinement for two years.[1]
Soyinka has strongly criticised many Nigerian military dictators, especially late General Sanni Abacha, as well as other political tyrannies, including the Mugabe regime in Zimbabwe. Much of his writing has been concerned with "the oppressive boot and the irrelevance of the colour of the foot that wears it".[citation needed] During the regime of General Sani Abacha (1993–98), Soyinka escaped from Nigeria via the "Nadeco Route" on a motorcycle. Living abroad, mainly in the United States, he was a professor first at Cornell University and then at Emory University in Atlanta, where in 1996 he was appointed Robert W. Woodruff Professor of the Arts. Abacha proclaimed a death sentence against him "in absentia". With civilian rule restored to Nigeria in 1999, Soyinka returned to his nation. He has also taught at the universities of Oxford, Harvard and Yale.
From 1975 to 1999, he was a Professor of Comparative Literature at the Obafemi Awolowo University, then called the University of Ife. With civilian rule restored in 1999, he was made professor emeritus.[1] Soyinka has been a Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In the fall of 2007 he was appointed Professor in Residence at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California, US.[1]

jonced: @op...hi
If ur story is true, then u r a decent guy. U still have a long way 2 where u should be but if u continue with this outlook 2 life...i pray u get to a good place in d end. Now, u need 2 discard most of the comments on this thread, they simply r of no value 2 u.

Let me explain what happened...but before i do that let me tell u this...pls forget about that girl, she would only cause u harm emotionally, financially, even ur dreams r @ risk here, this is not an advice, its a warning.

Now let me tell u what happened...its not difficult really...the whole drama is about....money, yes, money.

When u told her u would be visiting her state, she hatched a plan in her head 2 make some money from u. U see, if u're familiar with social networks, u will know that they r crawling with ladies who just want 2 meet guys, sleep with them 4 money, and continue d relationship with d guy as long as they can milk him, afterwards, they dump d guy. Such ladies have a number of guys @ any given time that they use as ATMs, they also have a number of guys on their radar.
U happened 2 b on her radar, but u thwarted her plan 2 begin d milking process by not sleeping with her that night. U see, she has no basis 2 begin to come up with sob stories or requests for money if u do not sleep with her. That's how such ladies see it ...so to her u r 'bad market' and just wasted her time. Time she might have spent milking or setting up some other guy for milking. Such ladies r emotionally cold and will drop u as soon as u dont fit into their plan because there r so many guys dat they have 2 work on @ any given time and so they feel u r a waste of time. Forget abt a serious relationship with her...she just wants 2 sleep with u for money.
If u doubt me...send her a text telling her that u want 2 send some money into her account so that she can travel to where u r and spend some time with u, and see how fast she will call u. However, when she calls dont send any money, just know what she's about.
If she calls and u fall for her stories...u r on d wrong road my freind. I hope i have helped u solve d mystery.

Be wise
You are totally on point. Otherwise she is not supposed to take it personal, but once she discovered the guy has failed to sleep with her, she already knows this is a 'BAD MARKET'.

Thank you sir.

okeymadu: You didn't at any point go wrong. Perhaps, she should have come out clean during your conversations and let you know she doesn't mind "doing it" at the first date.

But I hail you self control. Please, move on and let her be.
Yes. I respect you for your decision. This is how women mislead men with their deceptive actions, words and attitude.

They will claim to be A whereas they are BB or B+. Below is my arithemetics or logic:

If you had touched her that night she would have said: 'didn't I tell you that men are same?' and you would have lost confidence in yourself too by joining the 'men';

If you had insisted that she should not follow you to the hotel: she could say you have things to hide eg. you have another girl there;

You did not touch her and she is angry making you to feel you are not 'man' enough to bring her out of her shell.

I hate the deceit in them. Because tomorrow now if a lady tells you she is menstruating and you still want to UnCloth her by believing she was feigning it, she wont know what a lady has set as precedence.

You are a man and I respect you. Keep it up.

AKobo4urthought: How can you Invite someone else to a wedding, that you yourself are not invited to?? How are you suppose to show up uninvited to a wedding of a person, that doesn't even acknowledge you?? Maybe if that person was your REAL brother, sure that would be fine if you just showed up, but in Blackface's case he is tuface's old buddy so in order for him to show up he has to be formally invited. Tuface not inviting him only shows that he obviously doesn't want him there. You just can't show up to a wedding of a person not invited, and think everything would be cool. Blackface is not on the wrong here, Its all tuface. If he wanted the guy to show, he should have given him an IV and leave him the choice of coming or not. Its called courtesy.

Logic of some people baffles me sha........
When you want to do your own wedding invite Blackface and enjoy his craze. It is not every old friend you continue with. Tuface has to channel another cause for his life. He cannot afford to move with an enemy calling himself friend. Tuface like his name states is Innocent, cannot 'hurt a flie' and you have this Blackface that has this 'bad boy' stuff. They attacked Tubaba 3 times in Lagos, you thought it was just some guys on the street? Tuface was sued not by the people on the street but his own friend and brother. Tuface featured him in his first album Face to Face but till today, Blackface has never featured Tuface. Tuface invited Blackface to his show in Abuja but Blackface has not reciprocated. Tuface has been featured by almost all the artistes in Nigeria and he has composed songs for people but has never said it during any interview but Blackface will always look for cheap popularity by saying I did this for that. Pls leave Blackface. Faze was their junior in age and music career yet Tuface has mended the fence with him and they are together in Now music for mgt service what is wrong with Balckface?

Heaven knows I have been a strong fan of the 'Faces' from their Plantashun bois days to their solo careers and the truth is Blackface slipped. This is life men. Nigga has got to put in work. Blackface was obviously the weakest link. Whilst others were putting in work to get record deals and put out albums, what was he doing. His sophomore solo album wasn't half bad although I must say he needed to do more. He wanted to stay in the same genre as African China, Marvellous Benji and Daddy Showkey, yet didn't even do enough to stay relevant. We all have friends and the truth is that not all our friends would make it like some of us, however it is pertinent that it is seen that these friends are indeed ready to put in work.

They were 3 and yet only 2 have stayed relevant. I have never known 2baba to be a poser or the type to ACt overly big, but then again, this is life. For all it's worth, 2 face has made it out the hood on sheer hard work and talent, what has Blackface done to better his fate?! Some friends have to be dropped lest they weigh you down. Tuface is not an arrogant person.. Ask anyone that has ever come in contact with him.

When we criticise tuface, let's not forget that he had to work blood, sweat and tears to make it out o! From the days of Kennis Music fleecing him to his move to hypertek records.

I still hope blackface finds the luck needed to put out a great album, because that's all it will take to revamp his dead career.[/b]
You won my heart with this. Too philosophical; too educating. Thank you.

Thank you my sis. People forget things so quickly. It was just like yesterday when Tuface's supposed best friend and brother dragged him to court just because he was part of the song.
Tuface was even mature and magnanimous enough to be having dealings with such a man with vendetta and calumny. He invited him to Abuja for his 10-year on stage celebration.

Blackface is an enemy full of anger, envy and jealousy towards Tuface. I would have done worse than Tuface. Did he invite Tuface for his own wedding? NO.

thorpido: That's life. It's amazing when people turn their backs on people they have known when fortunes change.
But it more disheartening when people that are supposed to be friends turned out to be enemies.

Tuface has never for once said any bad thing about this man called blackface including when he sued Tuface and claimed 50% of the income of African Queen rather good things like his uncle(blackface uncle) provided accommodation for them when they came from IMT Enugu to Lagos, that Blackface uncle spent money for them, etc but Blackface on the contrary has never said any thing good about Tuface. He would rather speak spitefully and slanderously about the guy in any interview he granted but trust Tubaba, silence is the best answer.

If I were Tuface too, I wouldn't invite enemy that is too envious to see anything good in me. Imagine your friend suing you because a song you composed together brings success for the other one. He also produced his own version of African Queen just to discredit Tubaba but whoever God has blessed, like Tuface said, no man including blacface can curse.
I wont invite him too if I were Tuface Idibia. He could go there and distabilize everything out of jealousy. Enemy like friend.

It is very possible. Infact, it is the truth. She foreknew what could happen and made a calculated attempt for you.Unfortunately, u too fell for it, u neither withdrew nor used condom.

What brings about pregnancy is your sperm hiting the lady's egg(ovary) and fertilization takes place. What you can do now to be sure is for her to go for pregnancy test and you compare the dates to be sure.

Releasing a book after 40 years of war to fan the ember of hatred in environment that is hostile already was a height of 'stupidity' ( pls forgive me for that). As an elder stateman. Every effort must be made to mend broken fences not to break more. He made that mistake and it is quite unfortunate.

bolaino: hmmmm, nice advice my mann, thanks for ur concern, but when it comes to christianity I've been there and done that, I used to be a hard core born again christian until, I started practicing different religions, I've searched for d truth and before becoming a freethinker, I did a lot of research and experiments, (religious experiments) and I concluded that christianity like the other religions, is something that was created to control the masses, (feeble minded) religion is mind control plain and simple, I can't go into detail, but thanks all the same,
Who created the religions you are talking about.

What your girl is is talking about is Jesus. Jesus is the way of salvation. If you dont believe it is for your peril. One fact you cannot argue about is there is a being that is behind the working of everything in this world. For every design there must be a designer. That Being is God and he has chosen Jesus as the way of salvation.... Jesus said as it was in the days of Noah, so shall the coming of his be-Mat 24:37, can u remember the days of Noah? He preached for 300 years and people did not believe him, they were marrying, partying, etc. Believe Jesus and be saved. I am not preaching any church to u sir.
Health‘I Don’t Produce Fake Drugs, I Only Package’ by kingingkinging(op): 9:00am On Mar 21, 2013
The Lagos State Police Command has accused a 58-year-old Ikenna Nne of producing “large quantity of” substandard drugs.
The suspect, however, said he never produced drugs but only packaged them in a way that made them look original.
Some of the drugs found in his possession comprise five large cartons of fake Zentel tablets, thousands of packs of Zentel tablets and a large quantity of printed packets for packaging Postinor tablets.
The suspect however said although the goods were not produced by the real manufacturers, they were still as effective.
“You can call the goods fake but they are effective. I use the drugs and they work for me. I can even administer the drugs to my children,” he said.
Asked how he got into the illegitimate business, the suspect angrily responded by saying he had worked in a pharmaceutical company in India.
He said, “I repair machines for pharmaceutical companies and I’ve even worked in a company in India before. I however do not produce the drugs.
“Some time ago, one Uche brought machines to my place for repairs but after I had fixed them, he left them in my worskshop and he told me to assist him in packaging drugs.
“For each drum of drugs I package, he pays me N20,000 while he pays me N35,000 for using my place every month. I don’t market the drugs neither do I produce, I only package.”
When asked where the drugs originated from, the suspect said they were imported from India and China.
He however denied ownership of the goods, claiming innocence.
He said, “I’m not the owner of the goods. The reason this large quantity of goods were found in my possession is that I seized them after Uche refused to pay me.
“I only put the goods in blisters; I don’t produce neither do I market them.”
The spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, said the suspect would be handed over to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.
She said, “On March 15, 2013, at about 5pm, based on information, the suspect, who is the owner and occupier of the premises situated at 5 Arochukwu Street, Ejigbo, has on his premiises machines for producing counterfeit drugs.
“The Divisional Police Officer, Ejigbo, Inoma-Abbey, led a team of operatives to cordon and search the premises and two packing machines, one blistering machine and the cartons of fake drugs were recovered.
“He will be handed over to NAFDAC for further investigation.”
