Politics › Re: Yari Paid Himself N360m Pension Shortly Before He Left Office - Zamfara Governor by Kingrefreshed: 10:31am On Nov 29, 2019
joshcaleb200:
Governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle of Zamfara state has accused the immediate past governor of the state, Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar, of paying himself N360 million from the state pension funds shortly before he left office.

The governor said this in Wednesday while assenting to a law stopping jumbo allowances for former governors, deputies, speakers and their deputies in the state.

The Speaker of the state House Assembly, Nasiru Muazu Magarya, and other principal officers of the House had brought a bill before the governor for assent.

Matawalle, while assent the bill, said, “If you could remember former governor Yari had sent a letter to me demanding that his N10 million monthly upkeep allowances be paid and he was even threatening to take me to court should I fail to pay the money.

“I called my deputy, the state assembly speaker and his deputy and asked them whether they need such mind-boggling allowances and they all answered in negative. Then, we decided to repeal the law backing the payment and I have assented to it.

“Our successors will not find it easy to come up with such obnoxious law to pillage the little resources of the state in the future. There is no reason whatsoever the state could afford to pay the past leaders a whopping sum of N702 million annually to the detriment of dying pensioners in the state,” Matawalle said.

“It is on the record that the backlog of pension and gratuity for local government workers and primary school teachers left behind by Abdulaziz Yari’s administration stands at N3billion while that of the state government retired civil servants also stands at N3billion. “What moral justification could be offered for such a Jumbo package for a select few when the social index has consistently indicated that the majority of our population lives in abject poverty?” he queried.

According to the governor, for anyone to become governor or attain any top position in the state, or means they were already financially well to do.

oshozondii:
In a move that offered insight into how his administration would run, Bayelsa Governor- Elect, Chief David Lyon has appointed a former deputy- governor Rt Hon Werinipre Seibarugu to head a 59-man member All Progressive Congress (APC) Transition Committee to prepare the take-off of the new government in February 2020.

Governor Seriake Dickson had earlier set up his administration transition committee headed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Kemela Okara and which has all serving Commissioners as members.

Seibarugu from Agudama- Ekpetiama in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State was one- time Speaker of the State House of Assembly before he was nominated as Deputy – Governor when Chief Timipre Sylva was governor.

In the list sighted by this paper the 59-member transition committee which has a former Head of Service, Chief Obegha Julius Oworibo as secretary has as members a mixture of former governorship aspirants, loyalists of former President Goodluck Jonathan, elders of the party, party executives and federal lawmakers which gave a hint that Lyon is prepared to run an all inclusive government

Some of the prominent names on the list include three former governorship aspirants namely Prince Ebitimi Amgbare, Prof Ongoebi Maureen Etebu, CP Dieseye Poweigha(rtd). Others are two federal lawmakers, Hon Israel Sunny- Goli, member Nembe/Brass Federal Constituency and his colleague representing Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency, Hon Preye Influence Oseke. Loyalists of Jonathan that made the list include, Rt Hon Claudius Enegesi, Engr Mike Ogiasa and Chief Moses Otazi.

Also on the list are Prof Millionaire F. N Abowei, Mr Fakuma Ilagha, Dr Dennis Otiotio, the alternate Director-General of the David Lyon campaign organization, Prof Seiyefa Brisibe, junior brother to incumbent Bayelsa State Deputy- Governor, Hon Gabriel John Jonah, Mr Rex Ogbuku, Hon Stella Dorgu, Dr Theodore Allison, Mrs Gloria Izonfuo Mr James Ayobegha, Chief Beinmo Spiff and others.

Meanwhile Dickson has inaugurated two Committees namely Safety of Government Assets Committee and Immovable Assets and Investments Committee to work as sub- committees to the transition committee.

Dickson while performing the inauguration, emphasised the need for both committees to properly document the movable and immovable assets of government including investments which would form part of his hand over notes to the incoming government

He remarked that when he took over the reins of leadership in 2012 there was no properly documented information on government assets, adding that as a responsible, responsive, accountable and transparent government he was prepared to change that by furnishing the incoming government with this information to enable it take off smoothly.

Foreign Affairs › Re: Boris Johnson Accused Of Racial Stereotyping With View On Nigerians by Kingrefreshed: 10:19pm On Nov 28, 2019
fergie001:
Boris Johnson has been accused of pushing racial stereotypes over a newly-unearthed column written during his time as editor of the Spectator in which he said young people had “an almost Nigerian interest in money”.

The prime minister has been under pressure in recent months over a series of comments he made during his career as a columnist, writer and editor, including referring to black people as “piccaninnies” with “watermelon smiles” and arguing Islam has caused the Muslim world to be “literally centuries behind” the west.

In another column which has come to light, Johnson blamed single mothers for “producing a generation of ill-raised, ignorant, aggressive and illegitimate children”, saying that social housing was an enticement for them to become pregnant.

The new columns emerged after the chancellor, Sajid Javid, refused seven times to say whether he would use the terms “bank robber” or “letterbox” to describe Muslim women who wear a burka, as Johnson did last year.

The Conservative party leader wrote in a diary piece for the Independent on Sunday in October 1999 that Tony Blair had made people feel good about getting rich.

He added: “All the young people I know – ie those under 30 – are just as avaricious as we flinty Thatcherite yuppies of the 1980s in fact, they have an almost Nigerian interest in money and gadgets of all kinds.”

Weyman Bennett, the co-convenor of Stand Up to Racism, described Johnson’s words as “deeply racist and offensive”. He told the Guardian: “This can be added to the ‘piccaninnies’ and ‘watermelon smiles’, the abject refusal to properly apologise and change his behaviour around racism.

“Boris Johnson is unfit to be a prime minister that represents the entire United Kingdom. He had demonstrated this by lying and falsely representing black, Asian and different communities inside this country.

“This is deeply offensive and unforgivable and should not be ignored and he should be held to account.”

In the column on single mothers, published in the Spectator in 1995, Johnson wrote that “uppity and irresponsible women” had a “natural desire to have babies” and that ways must be found to ensure they married.

Arguing that social housing available to single mothers was “an enticement”, Johnson said “no government – and certainly no Labour government – will have the courage to make the cuts in the safety net of the viciousness required to provide anything like such a deterrent”.

Labour said the comments followed a pattern of sexist and misogynistic words and behaviour by Johnson. Shami Chakrabarti, the shadow attorney general, said: “These unearthed comments further reveal Boris Johnson’s contempt for women and families, as he hypocritically attacks what he appallingly describes as ‘illegitimate’ children.”

In the past 24 hours both major parties have been criticised for their handling of race issues. The Muslim Council of Britain accused the Conservative party of “denial, dismissal and deceit” over the issue of Islamophobia on Tuesday, saying the party had a “blind spot for this type of racism”. On Wednesday Johnson apologised for Islamophobia within the Conservative party.

The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has also struggled to move on from an intervention by the chief rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, who said the party had not done enough to tackle antisemitism.

amebogistng:
Trial on the alleged N6.9 billion fraud against former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose at the Federal High Court, Lagos, was on Thursday stalled following absence of the trial judge, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke.

The judge is said to be away attending a conference.

Fayose is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged money laundering involving N6.9 billion while serving as governor.

Also charged alongside Fayose, was Abiodun Agbele, the ex-governor’s aide accused of assisting his boss in carting away part of the missing funds.

He was first arraigned on Oct. 22, 2018, before Justice Mojisola Olatotegun alongside his company, Spotless Investment Ltd, on an 11-count charge.

He had pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail on Oct. 24, 2018, in the sum of N50 million with two sureties in like sum.

The defendant was subsequently re-arraigned before Justice Aneke on July 2, after the case was withdrawn from Justice Olatoregun, following EFCC’s petition on unsatisfactory handling of the case.

Fayose also pleaded not guilty to the charges and was allowed to enjoy his bail while the case was adjourned until Nov. 28 for trial.

The trial, however, could not progress as slated as the court did not sit and a new date has yet to be fixed for the trial.

Politics › Re: Again, IMF Warns Nigeria Against Rising Debts by Kingrefreshed: 10:41am On Nov 28, 2019
blazesam:
The IMF Senior Resident Representative and Mission Chief for Nigeria, Mr Amine Mati, has said that Nigeria’s debt to gross domestic product ratio at 28 per cent has increased but is still below the average sub-Saharan Africa and Africa as a whole.

He said this at the public presentation of the ‘Fall 2019 issue of the regional economic outlook for sub-Saharan Africa,’ in Lagos on Wednesday.

While mentioning that the revenue to GDP was low, he urged the Federal Government to increase its drive to create more jobs and revamp its fiscal consolidation.

He said, “Nigeria’s debt has increased but the level is way below the average for the region. Even if we include the CBN overdraft and others, we are talking about a debt to GDP ratio that does not go beyond 27 to 28 per cent to GDP and that is including AMCON overdrafts and others.”

On fiscal consolidation, he said, “For resource intensive countries and the non-resource intensive countries, one thing that is common is that when there is trade shock, they have to react. So, you lose revenues, debt

“In most countries, you would see debt is about 50 per cent to GDP and has increased since 2016 in all cases. But what is new is that most of the countries are back on a sustainable path and have plans to reduce debt through fiscal consolidation and they seem to have stabilised.”

“The growth in per capita to the GDP since 2016 has been sustained for the 12 group of countries and has stayed sluggish for the group of countries because they have to be dealing with trade shock and how they respond to the shock has also affected what is their path.”

In April, at the joint annual spring meetings with the World Bank in Washington DC, the IMF had expressed worry over Nigeria’s ability to repay its foreign debt, which was put at N24.387tn.

In October, the IMF at another forum called for an effective debt management strategy that would ensure that the amount borrowed posed limited risk and the funds deployed for developmental purposes.

The Managing Director, Financial Derivatives Company, Mr Bismarck Rewane, said, “We don’t have a debt crisis; we have a revenue problem but there are also other problems such as poverty, productivity. So, it is not as if we have a debt or revenue problem. Also, what we use our revenue for is also important.”

Rewane, who is also a member of the President’s Economic Advisory Council, added, “The government expenditure and the government investment multiplier is much lower than the private sector multiplier and the difference between the flow of wealth and the stock of wealth is a different story.”

Soundcity quickly responded to Wizkid’s tweet, in a cowardly drafted statement, asking the star boy what their offense was.

NwekeUG:
IgbereTV reports that the Senator and Congressman representing New Jersey, where Sowore resides in the U.S.A., wrote a letter to Nigerian Ambassador to the United States of America, on the detention of Sowore by the DSS.

See letter below

Congress of the United States
Washington, DC 20515

November 25, 2019

Ambassador Sylvianus Adiewere Nsofor
Head of Mission
Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
3519 International Court, N.W.
Washington DC. 20008

Dear Ambassador Nsofor,

We write to express strong concern about closing media and Civic space in Nigeria. There have been a number of troubling reports about Nigeria security services assaulting and detaining journalists using excessive force on non-violent protesters and taking other actions that inhibit freedom of expression, and otherwise prevent Nigerians from fully exercising their constitutional rights.

Journalists and activists such as Omoyele Sowore, Jones Abiri, Kofi Bartels, Samuel Ogundipe, and others investigating and speaking-out politically sensitive problems like corruption or insecurity have been harassed and detained, with reports that some have been tortured. In at least one instance, the Department of Security Services has ignored a court order to release a detained activist. Restrictions and deadly crackdowns on non-violent protesters since 2015 have similarly reflected a lack of apparent commitment to civic freedoms which is beginning to negatively impact the image of Nigeria's government, both home and abroad. Security forces used live ammunitions on Shiite protestors in Zaria, Kaduna State in 2015; on protestors in Onitsha, Anambra State in 2016, again on a Shiite procession in Abuja in 2018, raided the office of Daily Trust, and arrested the editor in January, 2019, and shot and killed Precious Owolabi, a journalist covering a July 2019 protest in Abuja. The crackdowns have collectively killed hundreds of Nigerian citizens and serve serve as troubling demonstration of the excessive force used by the military. The alleged perpetrators of these abuse have yet to be brought to justice.

Mr. Ambassador, Nigeria has a critical role to play in preserving peace and and stability in West Africa, and as the most popular democracy in the continent, it could serve as a shining example of how countries can best observe the rights enshrined in the African Charter on Human and People's Rights. However, failure to failure to respect the rights in the Charter and those in Nigeria's own constitution undermine your nation's ability to lead in this area. We urge you to ensure that the rights and liberties contained in the constitution are observed for all citizens, and to take strong action against further closing space for journalists, political opposition, and those in civil society. The rights of all citizens must be respected without the threat of government reprisal. We look forward to seeing progress on this critically important issue. Thank you for your attention on this urgent matter.

Sincerely,

Signed

Robert Menendez
United States Senator

Josh Gottheimer
Member of Congress
