I'm inclined to agree with you on our utility of big name players, we seemed to have failed woefully in maximising their full potentials.

His regression like you rightly pointed out came during the closing stages of his arsenal career, many thought he was doing it out of rebellion but most of saw the truth, age had caught up with him and now he's in the same playing level with likes of Bebe, Obertan and even Juan Sebastian veron.
