Did a man called Jesus of Nazareth walk the earth? Discussions over whether the figure known as the “Historical Jesus” actually existed primarily reflect disagreements among atheists. Believers, who uphold the implausible and more easily-dismissed “Christ of Faith” (the divine Jesus who walked on water), ought not to get involved. Numerous secular scholars have presented their own versions of the so-called “Historical Jesus” – and most of them are, as biblical scholar J.D. Crossan puts it, “an academic embarrassment.” From Crossan’s view of Jesus as the wise sage, to Robert Eisenman’s Jesus the revolutionary, and Bart Ehrman’s apocalyptic prophet, about the only thing New Testament scholars seem to agree on is Jesus’ historical existence. But can even that be questioned? The first problem we encounter when trying to discover more about the Historical Jesus is the lack of early sources. The earliest sources only reference the clearly fictional Christ of Faith. These early sources, compiled decades after the alleged events, all stem from Christian authors eager to promote Christianity – which gives us reason to question them. The authors of the Gospels fail to name themselves, describe their qualifications, or show any criticism with their foundational sources – which they also fail to identify. Filled with mythical and non-historical information, and heavily edited over time, the Gospels certainly should not convince critics to trust even the more mundane claims made therein. Also important are the sources we don’t have. There are no existing eyewitness or contemporary accounts of Jesus. All we have are later descriptions of Jesus’ life events by non-eyewitnesses, most of whom are obviously biased. Little can be gleaned from the few non-Biblical and non-Christian sources, with only The first problem we encounter when trying to discover more about the Historical Jesus is the lack of early sources. Filled with mythical and non-historical information, and heavily edited over time, the Gospels certainly should not convince critics to trust even the more mundane claims made therein. Roman scholar Josephus and historian Tacitus having any reasonable claim to be writing about Jesus within 100 years of his life. And even those sparse accounts are shrouded in controversy, with disagreements over what parts have obviously been changed by Christian scribes (the manuscripts were preserved by Christians), the fact that both these authors were born after Jesus died (they would thus have probably received this information from Christians), and the oddity that centuries go by before Christian apologists start referencing them. So what do the mainstream (and non-Christian) scholars say about all this? Surprisingly very little – of substance anyway. Only Bart Ehrman and Maurice Casey have thoroughly attempted to prove Jesus’ historical existence in recent times. Their most decisive point? The Gospels can generally be trusted – after we ignore the many, many bits that are untrustworthy – because of the hypothetical (i.e. non-existent) sources behind them. Who produced these hypothetical sources? When? What did they say? Were they reliable? Were they intended to be accurate historical portrayals, enlightening allegories, or entertaining fictions? Ehrman and Casey can’t tell you – and neither can any New Testament scholar. Given the poor state of the existing sources, and the atrocious methods used by mainstream Biblical historians, the matter will likely never be resolved. In sum, there are clearly good reasons to doubt Jesus’ historical existence – if not to think it outright improbable. https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2014/12/18/did-historical-jesus-exist-the-traditional-evidence-doesnt-hold-up/ |
OkCornel:Leave me out of it. There is no historical Jesus and even if there was, so what? If there was, all you have is some random Jew who led a cult 2000 years ago. Does the existence of Muhammad validate the incredible and improbable claims made about him and Islam? Apply the answer to your super jew that looks like Kenny Loggins. |
Hostkene: I see good things in your future. |
Hostkene:You lost him?! Find prophets who can see and you will definitely find him. |
Hostkene:If you can get the location from four pastors and seven prophets who can see, I’ll accept it. |
Hostkene:It depends on what the prophets see. Have you consulted them yet? FYI - You can do the Macarena to nullify any bad thing they see. |
Hostkene:Did a prophet see it or did you see it? |
Wilgrea7: Hostkene:This thread is hilarious. The story keeps taking twists and turns as you shoot from the hip but try to keep it together. 2+1+1 = 4, so we are missing 3 prophets and their locations. Or is it 4 pastors and 7 prophets telling him he will be stashotbbed to death? In short, the moral of the story is “prophets can see” but so can dogs. |
Kuginzi:Ibiyeomie’swife has to be of the lowest character to be this scam artist’s wife. His father Oyedepo is a common thief that lords over superstitious simpletons. Ibiyeomie’sthreats are as worthless as the nonsensical Jewish character he calls god. Since he wants to kill like his depraved god, he needs to be careful that the threat doesn’t boomerang and his church becomes a scene out of Numbers Chapter 11. The wrath of his so called god to his doorstep. Bring the Owo incident right to the alter if his god. Yea, did I mention that Oyedepois a lowlife scumbag? |
Obafavour:Nothing I’ve said supports your statement. Obafavour:Nothing I’ve said supports your statement. Obafavour:Christianity has never been in danger of been wiped out because it has done all the wiping out due to the savagery of its adherents. Obafavour:“God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice.” Maybe god needs to take them over from a depraved mind so they can do what ought to be done. After all, he gave them over to a depraved mind in the first place. |
Dtruthspeaker:If events meet the criteria for genocide it is appropriately labeled as such regardless if god ordered it or not. His creations? Even if I follow your argument that he exists and likes to order mayhem, it’s doubtful that he is the creator. Reminds me of the story of Solomon, the alleged mothers, and the baby. Do I need to tell you what the mere human “creator” of the baby did while the other “creator” was ready to destroy the baby? Dtruthspeaker:Of course there was no rape!! Then Midian virgins and the Chibok girls were married off properly to Israelite soldiers and Boko Haram soldiers, respectively Dtruthspeaker:Yes, Allah himself was on the ground in Chibok so rape was impossible. |
Obafavour:No, your biblical god waged the war himself in Egypt with his ten plagues including the murder of all the first borns. Obafavour:No they didn’t. They were a band of marauding terrorists. And even if they did, it doesn’t justify genocide and rape. Obafavour:No, they warred because they were superstitious savages manipulated by greedy leaders. What did the countless Jews they murdered on their way to the “holy land” have to do with the “turkey threat”? The irony of the crusades is that Jews were murdered based on gentiles’ beliefs in their superstitions and bullshit. Obafavour:Christians don’t know the meaning of peace or love. Their actions globally proves that daily. Also, your doctrines, dogmas, and stories do not reflect love. You excusing genocide because god gave permission shows a fundamental lack of decency inherent in your Christianity. |
Obafavour:I see! Permission from God justifies all. Yes, they go permission from god to solve the Jewish problem. Obafavour:I don’t know what this means. Obafavour:Both believe in massacre. Christianity now appears benign because its murdering and looting have abated. Christians were terrorizing people at least 200 years before the birth of Muhammad and haven’t stopped since. The violence abated but it’s still an intrinsic part of Christianity. |
Dtruthspeaker:Ahhhhhhhh, genocide and rape are now justified. How about me and you go on a crusade? We arm ourselves with Numbers 25 and stories of Samson, Solomon, Joseph, and Rahab’s dealings with women. Do we get to keep the female virgins? |
Obafavour:Just like the Nazis never terrorized, they repossessed living space, avenged the humiliation of WW1, and defended their people. Obafavour:Just like the Israelites killed to steal and the counterparts of the Muslims called christians raped, pillaged, and destroyed to spread their religion. Obafavour:There are no differences and you have no point. I’m not defending Muslims but pointing out your hypocrisy and the fact that all Abrahamic religions are prone to violence based on the delusion that their god permits it. So you cannot criticize the Muslims while your faith is littered with the same depravity. But if you judge them for “terrorism”, you better judge your favorite people too. |
Obafavour:So, what point am I supposed to take from this? That your god is so bloodthirsty that he made them wander in a wilderness because rebeled and didn’t shed more blood in Egypt? Obafavour:No amigo, the hypocrisy is been displayed by you. You excuse the terrorism of the Israelites but want to accuse Muslims of the same actions. I hope the Babylonians fared better than the 13 year old girl whose father was run through by a spear, mother raped and killed, and baby brother’s head bashed against a rock. At least Moses and God let one of the soldiers keep her for himself. Thank God!!!! Obafavour:An atheist doesn’t believe in god. I’m not an atheist because there is no ambiguity in my stance: god is nonsense. An imaginary friend for adults. My moral code is obviously more enlightened than yours because their is no excuse for genocide. My moral code doesn’t depend on some god therefore it is automatically more humane because god cannot be used as justification for madness. |
Obafavour:This is not about Jesus or whatever he renewed. This is about your Moses and God and their affinity for violence which you accuse Islam of. Everything you accuse Muslims of are actions that are recorded in your Bible. Everything you accuse Muslims of has also been done by the Israelites in your biblical stories and by Christians has they spread the so called gospel around the world. |
Obafavour:Firstly, just because they call it theirs doesn’t make it theirs. Hence, their bloodcurdling savagery. Secondly, murder and genocide aren’t excused just because Moses “was sent to avenge”. Thirdly, what possession of theirs were the Israelite terrorists trying to repossess through genocide as written in Numbers 31? |
Obafavour:If the Muslims are full of terrorism because they follow Moses and the laws God have him, what does that make Moses and God? |
AntiChristian: Dtruthspeaker:Dtruthspeaker, “Moses sent to kill people and reserve virgins” already covers the murder of the women, which you obviously approve of. Indeed, no woman, man, or child was left alive as God commanded. Here’s your angry Moses, the forerunner of Muhammad. 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army - the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds - who returned from the battle. Here’s the continuation of the genocide and kidnapping of virgins. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man. @Sonmvayina once claimed verse 18 means “to take wisdom”. Lol, I can’t imagine been so subservient to a culture and people that their atrocities are summarily waved off and excused. |
MindHacker9009:Although the NT is not evidence that the guy existed, at least OKcornel can use it since he believes in his existence. However, I wonder why you are quoting NT events to support your position. It even goes beyond your usual cherry-picking of the Bible when you consider the OT as credible but the NT has a Roman creation. |
OkCornel:Are you sure you are not shooting yourself in the foot? Does Judaism’s denial of the guy count as Jewish scholarship? If the source of information you require to validate the guy’s existence or non existence has to be jewish, why accept Roman sources as evidence of his existence? I mean Anglo sources who got their information from Roman sources. |
budaatum:You’re welcome. |
Lol. The “incorruptible” Swiss. One of my favorite piece of Eurocentric propaganda is the one from Transparency International, which stated that Switzerland is the least corrupt country in the world. I thought to myself, how are the bandits corrupt but the keeper of the loot not corrupt? |
budaatum:No, but you asked a ridiculous question. An unnecessary question. budaatum:Then point it out to him not me. I asked him the question based on that very premise because of his statement about “evil and wickedness”. I discussed at his level, so to speak, to see if he is the “Boko Haram” type. Also, the chapter is often neglected when they discuss the “word of god”. If a believer in the Bible is ever unfortunate or fortunate enough to speak to me in real life, Numbers 31 would be a litmus test. If they excuse the obvious moral depravity of their “lord”(based on the aforementioned premise), I would tickle their fancy by putting the holocaust “into context”. See, you don’t understand the Hutsi and Tutsi “vengeance” event because you are not putting it “into context”. budaatum:Why do I need to acknowledge to you that you are speaking of fictional characters?!!! Lol, as if that has ever been a point of contention. Hell, if anyone appears confused that they are talking about fictional characters it would be you. |
budaatum:And I’m always amused that you think your observations make sense. Isn’t the “lord”(elated’s YHVH) one of the characters in the story who gives the command? How does this discussion of events in a book and the actions of the characters indicate that I believe one of the characters (the most improbable and incredible) wrote the book? When you discuss your favorite story of Adam and Eve and their Lord, do you think like elated does that a YHVH wrote the book? |
elated177:I read the passages and they don’t detract from my opinion that Numbers 31 is the epitome of evil and the evil was perpetrated by YHVH’s people with his consent. Yes, absolutely no need to engage further. |
elated177:Okay. It seems you can’t answer the question and there is no need to beat around the bush. Thanks |
elated177:You haven’t provided anything required. The question requires your opinion not random verses. What do you think of the actions of The Lord, Moses, and Israel regarding the Midianites as written in The Book of Numbers, Chapter 31? |
