The long and short of this is yes! Nigeria is a nation that is 98% religious and what that equally means is that the people value the opinions of their religious leaders even where it concerns politics more than they do any other opinion including even common sense.

A good example to look back on is the EndBadGovernance protest which took place only some weeks ago. The government paid off religious leaders in the country to warn their people not to show up to protest against bad governance in the country and guess what happened? The vast majority of Nigerians did not show up. They attended churches... there was even the million-man crusade held by RCCG around that same time to prove that it was not that people were in fact afraid the protests would be hijacked or their would be riots.

Someone some years ago said that over 50% of Lagosians alone could benefit from mental health therapy of some sort. That is just Lagos there. Counseling is available to all persons dealing with even emotional trauma from their pasts. It would be ill-advised, for OP or anyone in OP's shoes, to do nothing about the emotional scar from abuse as described by OP, an issue that has so far robbed him of a good quality of life according to his confession.
