ProgrammingChallenge: Strong Password Filter by kodewrita(op): 2:28pm On Apr 16, 2013
The challenge is simple and familiar. No time limit involved. participation only if it tickles your fancy. I would hope we would also try to find loopholes where we can.

Challenge: Write a program in any language that takes in a string and checks to see that it is a strong password that follows the following instructions:

---mixture of capitalized and small letters.
---numbers must be there.
---special characters in the following list( +,&,@) {just trying to make it simpler for everyone}
---no spaces

Only restriction: No COBOL. No Smalltalk and definitely no Assembler ( spare our brains grin )<--Feel free to break this.

ProgrammingRe: Is It Possible To Write To A Smart Card With PHP by kodewrita(m): 12:48am On Apr 08, 2013
PHP is simply a twisted dialect of C and as such, you can definitely write to a smartcard using the PHP CLI. Of course that would require you to understand the low level interface to the smartcard.

I am certain there are APIs floating around on the web that do exactly that. You can also use the PHP-Java bridge libraries to call the required Java classes if you decide to go ahead with using Java.

Make sure you always supplement your Nairaland research with good old google searches.

Best regards.
BusinessRe: Advice needed : How do I successfully manage my bakery In Nigeria from the UK?. by kodewrita(m): 5:29pm On Apr 04, 2013
bigheart2013: Yes you can! I asked a similar question before on Nairaland and got very useful tips. Here's the thing.

1. Businesses are established not only for financial profits (cash) but also for economic profits (non-cash), which may be to provide employment ur sister, or to make name, etc. establish which one is more important to you.
2. If you live outside Nigeria never hire a family member or relative to run your business.
3. Don't hire anyone who come to you advertising him/herself or begging for jobs
4. Hire people through a thorough interview process like a real company does. They'll respect the job more.
5. Do not pay salaries. Share the risks by paying only commissions (usually 10% on sales, or about 40% on profits.
6. Commission on sales is more motivating for hard-working people
7. U can also pay a base + commission. Anyone who cannot live on commission is not business-minded. Afterall the owner lives on profit only
8. Have a Bank account with a Microfinance bank (they help small businesses more) not a commercial bank
9. Every dime made must be paid into the bank (and withdrawn if needed)to build cash-flows in case you need loan some day. they should take picturess of bank slips and receipts of purchases and BBM u immediately the transaction is done.
10. Use BBM to stay connected and on top of business. BBM can transmit instant pictures of events & real-time chats as if you are there.
11. Be ruthless, professional, and out rightly non-sense with Nigerians. A lot of fraudulent crappy people out there.
12. You may take a bank loan to share the risk with a local bank, and let part of the loan be management TA (technical assistance), so the bank can provide their own manager to run the bakery professionally as a partner.
13. Another option is to rent out the bakery to a baker who pays you a flat fee every month, just like you will rent out a house you built to a tenant.
14. Every receipt must have the seller's or buyer's phone number on it (not hand-written). make random calls each month to audit or confirm transactions. If they know you call sellers and buyers, they will shape up.
15. Be patient! A business setup in January is not supposed to be making profit by now o!. It usually takes about a year or more to make profits.
16. On marketing use established re-sellers who buy in bulk and pay cash- Supermarkets, bread sellers, restaurants, shops, etc. Don't sell directly to people yet.
17. Please, please, please, hire a lady as a manager, preferably an educated married lady with kids. That's the only thing that works in Nigeria. They may be slow, but at least they won't loot your funds.

18. Ok having said all this. Please fire your sister now if she's not performing. Give her N350k gift to start her life somewhere grin grin grin

All the luck.
This advice applies to people who also run their own businesses in the same country they live in. I am printing this out to stick on my wall. This is top-class advice.

Foreign AffairsRe: North-Korea In Combat Posture To Hit US by kodewrita(m): 5:20pm On Mar 28, 2013
Michaeljones36: To attempt attrition warfare against the US, you'd have to find some way to transport insane numbers of people across the ocean to the Americas. And you'd have to do it while avoiding getting blown up in the water, or air, during transit.

Crossing over through Alaska is not really an option as the terrain is practically inhospitable.

The New World has some built in advantages in terms of defense.
You dont have to do that if you already have large numbers of supposedly "American" people already naturalized. As sleeper cells, they can be devastatingly effective. In fact, in the event of an all out war, expect such attacks from highly skilled sleeper cells masquerading as naturalized americans both within and outside the american military.

Essentially, one of their greatest strengths is also their greatest weakness.

Spoke with the guy who called you. And according to him, you said this is actually your first app ever and you coded it on a phone.

Well you'll still have to show that to me though.

Let's enjoy easter and I'll get back to you in a few days with specifications for a minor app I want to see.

All the best. In the meantime, you can try to take pictures of the interface of the application so I can see what it looks like.

And also post a link to the download site here.

I'll be willing to give you a small netbook in exchange for successful completion of a very minor J2ME application.

Essentially a way for me to kill two birds with one stone ( verify your competence and give you seed cash ).

Send me a contact phone number through my nairaland profile, I might be in PH within the week and can contact you or link you with a friend.

Note: Completion of the J2ME microapp precedes giving you the netbook.

Do let me know if you find this agreeable.
Foreign AffairsRe: North-Korea In Combat Posture To Hit US by kodewrita(m): 7:47am On Mar 27, 2013
Just a gift to you guys from a website called Quora.

Category: Military History and Wars.

Question: How much stronger is the United States military compared with the next strongest power?

Responder: Daniel Kearns (former paratrooper with the 82nd 82nd Airborne Division.)

Answer:

No other military or combination of militaries could even begin to inflict the slightest numbers of casualties on the United States Military in a conventional war.

Consider:

The US spends close to what the entire rest of the world spends in defense. 711 Billion. Per year. The next closest is China at 143 Billion.

The M1 Abrams tank has seen more combat than just about any other tank on the battlefield today. It has never been knocked out by enemy fire. (Completely killed) Ever. China has less than five hundred Type 99 tanks, that have just been developed, and are not even close to being as good as the Abrams. We have 8,700 Abrams.

We have 10 aircraft carriers. The good kind. Everyone else has 10. Combined. And they are mostly small ships that can launch helicopters.

There are 8400 attack helicopters in the world. The US has 6400 of them.

The United States has engaged in every type of ground warfare in the last 20 years. From mountains to jungles, and from desert to urban, we have the some of the most experienced warriors in the world. No other country comes close to the amount of combat veterans that we have.

We own all the satellites that guide GPS systems. We have all the advanced stealth technology. The latest sensors? US. The latest information systems? US. An Abrams tank can see a target, the Tank Commander can instantly send that target to every tank in his Company. Now you have 14 tanks looking for you. Oh, and it also uploads to every Apache helicopter in the area. Every indirect and direct fire system in the area knows what you are and where you are. Your survivability just dropped to O. Instantly.

Fighting a conventional war against the US would be like a 3 year old child playing chess against Gary Kasparov. They wouldn't even know what they were supposed to be looking at.

elvis10ten: 1)PC => 48,000
2)BULK SMS => 60,000
3)ADVERTISING => 20,000
4)HIRE A DEVELOPER(optional) => 20,000
THE REMAINING MONEY WILL BE KEPT FOR FUTURE EXPENSES.
Nice idea and like that you are detailed. But just a few thoughts.

1) Just to clarify that you are actually going to spend 150k initially and keep 100k for future expenses?
2) I am assuming the developer you are hiring is a fellow 14 year old because I am not certain you can get one for 20k but never say never though.
3) For advertising, get a family member or family friend to send out a BB broadcast campaign on your behalf with a download link to your application. At least if they cant give cash, they can help spread the word. And have no hard feelings towards them for not giving cash. You might end up not needing to spend that much on Bulk SMS.
4) Why do you need 60k for Bulk SMS? Just shed more light on that (Not criticism).
5) Am curious, what's the first platform you are aiming at after J2ME? Personally I would suggest an android app would be the next logical course given your Java proficiency.
6) Depending on your physical location, I might be able to help with a cheap laptop but you need to do more to convince me. Please post some screenshots (if possible) of your app including the console showing the user count.
7) Contrary to what someone else said on this thread, I dont think you are too young to produce a quality app. Passion, Trustworthiness, true technical skill and a clear head is all I need to see.

All the best in your endeavour.

Nobody wants a united korea under any guise. Not china. Not japan. Not the us.

Such an entity would have military might to rival both japan and china plus tech smarts to rival them too. Besides they will also have cheap labor in the form of low wage north koreans.

Economically, not a good idea for anybody.

Problem occured to me while trying to solve a related self-assigned problem. Havent done that I must admit angry but its cool to see the way people have participated.

Frankly I am now more interested in improving the problem itself ( better defining it). I feel it might have some usefulness for others though I cant see it yet. But its an interesting problem nontheless. Kudos to the guys who coded it in C++ and Python.

ProgrammingEnglish Language Programming Challenge by kodewrita(op):
My dear friends I have come again to trouble/challenge you a lil bit.

This challenge has no time limit.

It has no language restrictions and it is simply a matter of pride or interest if you participate.

Your responses will be stored here if you choose for learning/peer review.

Problem Statement:
Given a set of sentences in the English Language, write a program in any language to determine whether the event it references is in the past , present or future ( lets put all the other tenses under this headings. If you are capable, you can go deeper) with respect to the day on which the program is being run.

Sample Input Sentences:
The bomb was set to go off at 8am on the 18th of April 2013.
We will launch the application on Monday 9th March.
This case has been adjourned till next wednesday.
It will happen four days from now.

Sample Output for a program running today 25th March:
Future.
Past.
Future.
Future.

Please restrict yourself to THESE SENTENCES. Dont make it too complex by trying to make your code solve all possible situations. Just tackling these sample sentences is all that is required. Just interested in the logic behind your code and how you arrive at your solutions.

if you find it too hard, feel free to exclude some sentences.

As i said earlier, feel free to participate as you please and if you observe any flaws in the problem itself, please mention it.

Regards.

dont store your files in the database directly.
Best practice nowadays is to store it in your directory, rename it to a meaningful name and then store that filename in your database as a varchar field.

a 100 character length varchar field should be enough if your naming rules are smart e.g userid_6letterformname_6digitdate.jpg like 00898_schreg_140313.jpg.

All the best.

Orikinla: I pray and wish he continues to excel and not soon ending up as another office worker achieving nothing more than earning a seven digit salary as another consumer and not a producer, innovator or inventor.

I know many First Class graduates who have achieved nothing more than collecting monthly seven digit salaries at telecom companies, beverage companies, oil companies and banks. But they are still non-entities in today's highly competitive digital age.

What we need most in Nigeria now are not youths with straight As or First Class degrees, but starry-eyed innovators, inventors and trail-blazing entrepreneurs for the nation building of a New Nigeria.
Hope you are on a 7 digit salary too (or more). Lets not assume that its the end. Our companies also need reinvention too from the inside and some people have to do that too.

Life's a stage and we all have our roles to play.

I just want to say that this guy (irrespective of the school he graduated from. though I am biased being a private school grad like him) was a product of good mentoring. Hoping the mentoring that has been a part of his success doesnt get ignored now that he's a graduate. he should keep supplementing his own wisdom with the experience of his superiors whoever they may be and at whatever level they may be.

That way, today's success might be an ICAN event and tomorrow he might actualise his world bank dream but wisdom will be the light to that path. All the best and may God bless him.

It makes more sense to make it a one-year program with option of a voluntary extension for one or two years. So if you see you dont have any job opportunities, you can request that your NYSC be extended by one more year. that way, its a win-win for nigeria. You are employed and at the same time serving the nation.

Foreign AffairsRe: N. Korea Threatens South With 'final Destruction' by kodewrita(m): 10:32pm On Feb 23, 2013
I guess all that matters is that North Korea stand up to the US to satisfy our insecurities and that of the Kim family.

It does not matter one bit that famine is ever constant in North korea and it does not matter that people go from cradle to grave in North korea under constant fear of the Kim family and their cronies.

No, all that matters is that they stand up to the imperialist, neo-colonial,exploitative, manipulative, greedy, war-mongering, capitalist, enslaving, racist (I have run out of expletives. guess I didnt get to drink the koolaid like all y'all. oh well) Western coalition.

Yes, millions of people should stay enslaved to a tiny group of greedy people ( just like the Abachas planned for you people) as long as the rulers make the right noises.

Yes, lets do that.

However I read somewhere that its best to start with 60% 40% partnership so that its clear who's boss and who's not (to forestall power tussles later in the lifetime of the biz).
