PoliticsRe: FG Signs Mou With Japan To Enhance Rice Production by Konquest: 8:09pm On Dec 29, 2024
Editorialtimes:
NCRI Partners with JICA to Boost Rice Seed Production in Nigeria

The National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI), Badeggi, Niger State, has formalised a partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to enhance rice seed production systems across Nigeria. The collaboration, cemented through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), underscores a commitment to strengthening the nation’s agricultural development goals

Focus on Advanced Equipment and Capacity Building

As part of the agreement, NCRI will acquire state-of-the-art equipment for rice cultivation, production, testing, inspection, and post-harvest processing. These technological advancements will enable the institute to produce high-quality certified rice seeds, a critical component in addressing challenges within the rice production value chain.

Strategic Impact on Nigeria's Agriculture

This partnership represents a strategic step in tackling inefficiencies in Nigeria's rice production, with a focus on increasing yield and improving overall productivity. By boosting the availability of certified seeds, the initiative aims to support the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security's objectives of achieving food security and self-sufficiency.

A Shared Vision for Growth

The MoU signing ceremony brought together key stakeholders from NCRI, JICA, and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, highlighting the collaborative spirit underpinning this initiative. Both organisations expressed optimism about the partnership's potential to revolutionise rice production in Nigeria.

The partnership with JICA is expected to significantly contribute to modernising Nigeria’s agricultural sector, enhancing productivity, and strengthening the country’s position in the global rice market.

Billions of dollars of life-saving drugs being destroyed

By: Angie KoehlePosted 5:59 AM, May 15, 2019 and last updated 11:03 PM, May 16, 2019

Life saving medicine is thrown away daily. Some of it is paid for with your tax dollars.

"It's being shredded and destroyed. This medication has already been paid for by Medicare," said Joel Lucia, a licensed pharmacist.

The EPA estimated in 2015 about 740 tons of drugs are wasted by nursing homes each year throughout America. They may be leftover from a patient who went home before finishing it, or from someone who passed away. That's just nursing homes. Pharmacies and manufacturers are also tossing perfectly good, sealed medication too. Once it gets close to expiring, it's taken off the shelves and eventually dumped into furnaces.

"Most of them are expensive. Your medication for asthma, diabetes, blood pressure, hypertension, cholesterol. It's medication that people need on an everyday basis to survive," said local pharmacist, Steve Hayslett.

Hayslett used to be a retail pharmacist in the Valley. Watching people forced to leave empty handed was a tough part of the job. "It's very sad. It's disheartening," he said. "You see hope drain from their faces thinking they were going to come in and get care, only to realize that it's more expensive than what they can afford."

Fausto Lanfur knows that rejection. "The insurance I have now has a $5,000 deductible before I can start using it," Lanfur said. Ironically, he's a certified nursing assistant. "It doesn't cover me," he laughed. "There are a lot of people at my work with the same situation I have."

Every month Lanfur goes to the Mission of Mercy (MOM) mobile clinic to get his diabetes and blood pressure medicine.

The non-profit hands out 30,000 medications a year. MOM pays for the drugs with donations it receives. A lot of the medication is the same type of medication that is being destroyed by pharmacies, manufacturers and nursing homes.

"For us to be able to work with those organizations and be able to accept those medications would be so valuable," said Paula Carvalho, executive director of Mission of Mercy. "It would free up money to serve people who need our help."

Some states have an established a drug donation program, collecting unused, unexpired medication. Arizona lawmakers passed a law allowing a similar program, but it's not operational. Hayslett believes there needs to be more incentive to participate. It would require extra work for donors to gather the drugs and then get them to a facility that can accept them.

For drug makers, it may not be worth the hassle when many of them are already turning multi-billion dollar profits. But Hayslett believes he has a solution to curb some of the waste. He is one of the founders of San Rio Health, a new non-profit pharmaceutical wholesaler. "The goal is to get medications donated to us from other wholesalers, manufacturers. The manufacturers would get a tax credit for the donation," said Hayslett.

San Rio Health would then supply medication to clinics like Mission of Mercy for free, or at a reduced cost. San Rio has teamed up with NITE Foundation, another nonprofit, dedicated to providing neurology services for those in need.

The organizations have a warehouse in Tempe to store the medicine, but right now, the shelves are empty. Hayslett and his team spend their days reaching out to wholesalers and manufacturers to explain the process.

"The issue is a lot of companies don't realize this is an option," said Hayslett.

Hayslett believes it could be the cure for so much unnecessary waste.

Besides those things like 'expiring date' etc are mostly scam( they want U to eat quicky & buy more), sometimes its just one of the things that made up the product loosing its efficacy. unless u see some insects, spoilage or very abnormal taste or smell...Enjoy ur food.

Imagine them putting expiring date on grains grin grin... Capitalists are very greedy bunch
Food doesn't expire... It only has best before meaning, the date until which a foodstuff retains its specific properties, e.g. taste, aroma, appearance, any specific qualities which relate to the product, vitamin content, etc.

As for prescription drugs, MOST of them are still very POTENT decades after manufacturers alleged "expiration dates."
=>https://www.propublica.org/article/the-myth-of-drug-expiration-dates

Pharmacist and toxicologist Lee Cantrell tested drugs that had been expired for decades. Most of them were still potent enough to be on the shelves today. (Sandy Huffaker for ProPublica)

WASTED MEDICINE

The Myth of Drug Expiration Dates
Hospitals and pharmacies are required to toss expired drugs, no matter how expensive or vital. Meanwhile the FDA has long known that many remain safe and potent for years longer.

by Marshall Allen July 18, 2017, 5 a.m. EDT

The box of prescription drugs had been forgotten in a back closet of a retail pharmacy for so long that some of the pills predated the 1969 moon landing. Most were 30 to 40 years past their expiration dates — possibly toxic, probably worthless.

But to Lee Cantrell, who helps run the California Poison Control System, the cache was an opportunity to answer an enduring question about the actual shelf life of drugs: Could these drugs from the bell-bottom era still be potent?

Cantrell called Roy Gerona, a University of California, San Francisco, researcher who specializes in analyzing chemicals. Gerona had grown up in the Philippines and had seen people recover from sickness by taking expired drugs with no apparent ill effects.

“This was very cool,” Gerona says. “Who gets the chance of analyzing drugs that have been in storage for more than 30 years?”

The age of the drugs might have been bizarre, but the question the researchers wanted to answer wasn’t. Pharmacies across the country — in major medical centers and in neighborhood strip malls — routinely toss out tons of scarce and potentially valuable prescription drugs when they hit their expiration dates.

Gerona and Cantrell, a pharmacist and toxicologist, knew that the term “expiration date” was a misnomer. The dates on drug labels are simply the point up to which the Food and Drug Administration and pharmaceutical companies guarantee their effectiveness, typically at two or three years. But the dates don’t necessarily mean they’re ineffective immediately after they “expire” — just that there’s no incentive for drugmakers to study whether they could still be usable.

ProPublica has been researching why the U.S. health care system is the most expensive in the world. One answer, broadly, is waste — some of it buried in practices that the medical establishment and the rest of us take for granted. We’ve documented how hospitals often discard pricey new supplies, how nursing homes trash valuable medications after patients pass away or move out, and how drug companies create expensive combinations of cheap drugs. Experts estimate such squandering eats up about $765 billion a year — as much as a quarter of all the country’s health care spending.

What if the system is destroying drugs that are technically “expired” but could still be safely used?

In his lab, Gerona ran tests on the decades-old drugs, including some now defunct brands such as the diet pills Obocell (once pitched to doctors with a portly figurine called “Mr. Obocell”) and Bamadex. Overall, the bottles contained 14 different compounds, including antihistamines, pain relievers and stimulants. All the drugs tested were in their original sealed containers.

The findings surprised both researchers: A dozen of the 14 compounds were still as potent as they were when they were manufactured, some at almost 100 percent of their labeled concentrations.

“Lo and behold,” Cantrell says, “The active ingredients are pretty darn stable.”

Cantrell and Gerona knew their findings had big implications. Perhaps no area of health care has provoked as much anger in recent years as prescription drugs. The news media is rife with stories of medications priced out of reach or of shortages of crucial drugs, sometimes because producing them is no longer profitable.

Tossing such drugs when they expire is doubly hard. One pharmacist at Newton-Wellesley Hospital outside Boston says the 240-bed facility is able to return some expired drugs for credit, but had to destroy about $200,000 worth last year. A commentary in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings cited similar losses at the nearby Tufts Medical Center. Play that out at hospitals across the country and the tab is significant: about $800 million per year. And that doesn’t include the costs of expired drugs at long-term care pharmacies, retail pharmacies and in consumer medicine cabinets.

After Cantrell and Gerona published their findings in Archives of Internal Medicine in 2012, some readers accused them of being irresponsible and advising patients that it was OK to take expired drugs. Cantrell says they weren’t recommending the use of expired medication, just reviewing the arbitrary way the dates are set.

“Refining our prescription drug dating process could save billions,” he says.

But after a brief burst of attention, the response to their study faded. That raises an even bigger question: If some drugs remain effective well beyond the date on their labels, why hasn’t there been a push to extend their expiration dates?

It turns out that the FDA, the agency that helps set the dates, has long known the shelf life of some drugs can be extended, sometimes by years.

In fact, the federal government has saved a fortune by doing this.

For decades, the federal government has stockpiled massive stashes of medication, antidotes and vaccines in secure locations throughout the country. The drugs are worth tens of billions of dollars and would provide a first line of defense in case of a large-scale emergency.

Maintaining these stockpiles is expensive. The drugs have to be kept secure and at the proper humidity and temperature so they don’t degrade. Luckily, the country has rarely needed to tap into many of the drugs, but this means they often reach their expiration dates. Though the government requires pharmacies to throw away expired drugs, it doesn’t always follow these instructions itself. Instead, for more than 30 years, it has pulled some medicines and tested their quality.

The idea that drugs expire on specified dates goes back at least a half-century, when the FDA began requiring manufacturers to add this information to the label. The time limits allow the agency to ensure medications work safely and effectively for patients. To determine a new drug’s shelf life, its maker zaps it with intense heat and soaks it with moisture to see how it degrades under stress. It also checks how it breaks down over time. The drug company then proposes an expiration date to the FDA, which reviews the data to ensure it supports the date and approves it. Despite the difference in drugs’ makeup, most “expire” after two or three years.

This situation is actually occurring in a good number of western countries

I remember two years back when I was in an European country, the Govt usually bring bread (these people like bread alot) and other stuff, see people queuing so much just to get items, in the morning cold.

What caused this trend world over:

1. COVID: this was the first cause of tragedy..which spiralled to other effects of global economies

2. WARS: Syria war then later Russia-Ukraine war - because both countries are major suppliers of gas, wheat, etc to most coutries, the war led to scarcity of commodities and inflation

3. INFLATION: result from first two above

4. HOUSING, ENERGY, etc Crises

Its not peculiar to Nigeria at all. Its a global issue.
Succinctly put.

A lot of posters on this NL thread are NOT well informed and are semi-literates about current global geopolitical and economic situations hence do NOT realize that negative events in one part of the world affect other parts of the world. NO country on Earth exists in isolation from global inflation or hyperinflation and the effects of regional wars, and it's only by earning multiple income streams through careful investments in solid assets beyond the regular day jobs that CAN bulletproof anyone from any impending global economic recessions which come in cycles (economic cycles). It calls for financial literacy on the part of everyone has hasn't got the knowledge yet instead of getting triggered online and offline by childish emotional outbursts against those politicians or whoever. Lauretta Onochie, a Nigerian presidential aide, has reacted to a video showing Canadians queuing for palliatives.

In the video, a large crowd of Canadians can be seen waiting in line to receive palliatives. The scene is reminiscent of similar scenes often seen in developing countries, where citizens may queue for essential items.

Onochie's reaction to the video highlights the unexpected nature of the scene, with many Nigerians expressing surprise that a developed country like Canada would experience such a situation.

The video has sparked a wider conversation about the impact of economic conditions and the importance of social welfare programs. Many have praised the Canadian government's efforts to provide support to its citizens, while others have criticized the perceived inefficiencies in the distribution process.

The reaction from Onochie and other Nigerians underscores the global nature of economic challenges and the need for effective social safety nets.

Canada is better than Nigeria, but it has really been rough for the country of late.

The economy is tanking and inflation at all time high. Unemployment is over the roof, and housing has gone crazy. Healthcare in shambles and waiting time now like forever. Talk about the exchange rate against the dollar, that’s a story for another day.

The country bit more than it can chew. Why keep admitting people into the country when the opportunities and infrastructures are not there. Like some pundits will say, it was a money spindling venture for them.

A Nigerian national, Theophilus Ejiofor, 48, has been jailed, while his South African girlfriend, Violet Magqoki, 28, was granted bail following their involvement in a drug-dealing incident in Lichtenburg, South Africa.

Ejiofor and his accomplice, 33-year-old Kgomotso Pholoholo, were arrested after selling drugs valued at R40,000, which included 649 mandrax tablets, 40 packets of crystal meth, and a plastic bag containing CAT drugs.

Lieutenant Colonel Tinyiko Mathebula, spokesperson for the Hawks in North West, confirmed the arrest, stating, “An undercover operation was conducted, which led to the arrest of the pair soon after selling drugs valued at R40,000.”

Mathebula also added, “A search was conducted at the Nigerian man’s house, where crystal meth with an estimated street value of R15,000 and CAT drugs valued at R6,000 were confiscated.”

His suspected accomplice, Pholoholo, was granted bail of R1,000, while Ejiofor remains in custody as his bail hearing is postponed.

Magqoki, who is believed to be Ejiofor’s girlfriend, faced an additional charge of corruption after attempting to bribe police officers to release him.

Mathebula said, “She was subsequently arrested and charged with corruption.”

Magqoki was granted bail, also set at R1,000, and her case, along with Ejiofor’s, will be revisited on Monday for further proceedings.

“The operation was part of ongoing efforts to combat drug dealing in the region,” Mathebula said.

FoodRe: 10 Deadly Foods Lagosians Love To Eat by Konquest:
phosky:
Lagos, the vibrant heart of Nigeria, is famous for its rich and diverse food culture. While these meals tantalize the taste buds, some come with potential health risks if consumed recklessly. Here’s a look at 10 popular foods Lagosians enjoy that could be harmful if precautions aren’t taken. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

1. Suya (Grilled Meat)
This spicy street delicacy is irresistible, but its preparation over open flames can produce harmful compounds like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Additionally, improperly cooked meat may harbor bacteria. Moderation and choosing reputable vendors can reduce risks.

2. Puff-Puff
This deep-fried snack is a staple at Lagos parties, but excessive consumption contributes to high cholesterol and weight gain. The frequent reuse of frying oil by vendors can also produce harmful trans fats.

3. Sharwama
While delicious and convenient, shawarma often contains high-calorie sauces, overly processed meats, and vegetables stored under questionable conditions. These factors may lead to food poisoning or excessive calorie intake.

4. Akara (Bean Cake)
Another fried favorite, Akara, can be unhealthy when consumed in large amounts due to the excessive oil it absorbs. The risk increases if the frying oil is reused multiple times, creating harmful compounds

5. Isi Ewu/Nkwobi (Goat Head/Cow Foot)
This spicy delicacy is loaded with high-fat content, particularly saturated fats, which can increase cholesterol levels. The rich sauces often paired with alcohol make it even worse for heart health when consumed excessively.

6. Amala with Ewedu and Gbegiri
A Lagosian staple, Amala is typically accompanied by generous servings of soup and meat. While nutritious in moderation, large portions combined with fatty meats can lead to obesity and high cholesterol.

7. Fried Rice and Jollof Rice
No Lagos party is complete without these iconic dishes, but the excessive use of oil, seasonings, and additives like MSG can be unhealthy, especially for those with high blood pressure or kidney concerns.

8. Boli (Roasted Plantain)
While healthy on its own, Boli is often served with groundnut or palm oil sauces, adding unnecessary calories. Vendors’ hygiene practices can also raise concerns about contamination.

9. Asun (Spicy Goat Meat)
This smoky, peppery treat is high in saturated fat and often heavily salted. Its intense spice levels can also irritate the stomach lining, leading to acid reflux for some people.

10. Street Fruit Salads
These mixed fruit bowls are refreshing but can be dangerous if hygiene practices are lax. Fruits washed with unclean water or exposed to flies can harbor harmful bacteria, leading to foodborne illnesses.

Final Thoughts
While these foods are staples of Lagosian cuisine, their potential health risks stem from poor preparation practices, excessive consumption, or low-quality ingredients. To enjoy these meals safely:

Choose reputable vendors.
Eat in moderation.
Opt for homemade versions.

Lagos offers an exciting culinary adventure, but a little caution goes a long way in keeping you safe and healthy!

EXCLUSIVE: How Nigeria’s AGF Fagbemi Authorised Falana To File Fraud Charges Against Zinox Group CEO, Leo Stan Ekeh, Wife, Others After Malami Shielded Them From Prosecution

The then AGF and justice minister, Abubakar Malami, SAN, had for years shielded the persons from prosecution, thereby frustrating the case and hindering thorough investigation.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), officially authorised renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), to file file fraud charges against the Chairman of Zinox Group, Leo Stan Ekeh, his wife, Chioma and 8 other individuals and three companies, on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

SaharaReporters reported on Tuesday that Ekeh and the others were charged before the Federal High Court in Abuja for allegedly diverting N162,247,513.80 intended for a laptop supply contract at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Headquarters.

In a correspondence by Fagbemi, SAN, dated December 20, 2023, and obtained by SaharaReporters on Wednesday, the AGF noted that the prosecution of Ekeh and others was at the expense of the nominal complainant, Mr. Joseph Benjamin as requested.

The then AGF and justice minister, Abubakar Malami, SAN, had for years shielded the persons from prosecution, thereby frustrating the case and hindering thorough investigation.

In the memo obtained by SaharaReporters, titled, "Authorisation Under Section 174 Of The Constitution Of The Federal Republic Of Nigeria 1999 As Amended', and addressed to the Federal Ministry of Justice, the AGF said, "In the exercise of the powers conferred upon the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice by section 174(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, I, Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, SAN, Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, hereby authorize; Mr. Femi Falana of Falana & Falana & Co. of 22 Mediterranean Street, Imani Estate, Abuja- FCT, Nigeria to exercise the Powers on my behalf with particular reference to the refiling and effective Prosecution of Charge No. CR/827/2013 between Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chris Eze Ozim and 6 ORS at the expense of the nominal complainant, Mr. Joseph Benjamin as requested.

"You are to also ensure diligent prosecution and consistent update on the progress report of the case to my office without let or hinderance."

SaharaReporters on Tuesday reported that the government took legal action against Leo Stan Ekeh, his wife, Chioma and 8 other individuals and 3 companies, charging them before the Federal High Court in Abuja for allegedly diverting N162,247,513.80 intended for a laptop supply contract at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Headquarters.

The funds, domiciled in account number 0059202675 with Access Bank Plc, were reportedly misappropriated by the defendants under the guise of payment to Citadel Oracle Concept Limited.

The Complainant – the Federal Government of Nigeria – alleges that the accused knowingly used the account to receive and launder proceeds from the contract, despite being aware of its illicit nature.

The charge sheet, filed under case number FCT/HC/CR/985/24, lists individuals and entities, including Leo Stan Ekeh, Chioma Ekeh, Mr. Chris Eze Ozims, Oyebode Folashade, Charles Adigwe, Obilo Onuoha, Agartha Ukoha, Anya O. Anya, Femi Dosumu, and Nnenna Kalu as the Defendants.

The companies involved are Admas Digital Technologies Limited, Technology Distributions Limited, and Zinox Technologies Ltd.

The 15 counts filed on November 26, 2024 and received by the high court on November 28, 2024, were signed by human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) on behalf of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).

PoliticsRe: NNPC Floats Crude Production Monitoring Centre To Track Oil Output by Konquest: 2:36pm On Dec 29, 2024
Great100000:
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has announced the establishment of a Production Monitoring Command Centre (PMCC), which it said is a transformative step in hydrocarbon operations in Nigeria.

This initiative, driven by NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS), a statement by the company’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, said, aims to track oil barrels produced by the country.

According to him, it builds on the success of the Command and Control Centre to enhance monitoring, operational efficiency, and production within the oil and gas sector and aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s policy to increase efficiency and boost production in the industry.

“The PMCC serves as a unified platform for monitoring hydrocarbon molecules from production to export terminals, covering Joint Ventures (JVs) and Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs).

“By consolidating real-time data from various operators, the PMCC provides a comprehensive overview of production activities. This ensures timely identification of anomalies, minimises unplanned disruptions, and supports seamless operational continuity.

“With advanced analytics and integrated data, the PMCC empowers stakeholders with actionable insights for proactive decision-making. This capability enhances planning, resource allocation, and risk management, enabling operators to meet production targets efficiently and maintain high operational standards,” the NNPC stated.

It said a standout feature of the PMCC is its support for predictive and preventive maintenance. By monitoring equipment performance and coordinating maintenance activities, the system, the NNPC said, ensures the reliability and longevity of assets.

“Additionally, the PMCC promotes collaboration among stakeholders by providing a secure platform for data sharing and communication, fostering effective problem-solving and continuous improvement across the sector.

“The PMCC’s role in minimising downtime and optimising maintenance directly contributes to increased production and revenue. Under Mele Kyari’s leadership, NNPC has achieved a production increase to 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) and is working towards a target of 2 million bpd. The PMCC is integral to achieving this goal by driving efficiency and enhancing production capabilities,” the statement stressed.

The national oil company pointed out that the centre operates 24/7, staffed by trained professionals, and utilises cloud-based solutions to ensure seamless data exchange with internal and external stakeholders.

With direct communication links to the Industry-Wide Security Command and Control Centre, the PMCC, it disclosed, also enhances the security of production operations.

“As NNPC continues its modernisation journey, the PMCC reflects its commitment to innovation and excellence in the oil and gas sector. This initiative not only aligns with national goals but also strengthens Nigeria’s position in the global energy market, ensuring long-term growth and profitability for all stakeholders,” the NNPC added.

This is a massive investment in Nigeria! A tectonic shift from the fossilized past in the oil and gas industry. Kudos to the NNPCL and the guys in office at the Federal level.

Hello 🤩 everyone...
It's been a while here... I was banned some time ago and got used to staying off nairaland
After vacation, I travelled to my hometown to spend the holiday season with my family..

My mom is a business woman, she sells mostly farm produce i.e they buy directly from the farm and sell at the market.

Two days ago, she came back from the market with this huge bunch of plantain. She asked me to guess the price, and I told her that where I am coming from, you cannot get this less than 7k to 8k. But she told me, she got it for 3000 and ll resell 3500.

But why, I asked, she said she doesn't like placing much profit on her goods, because if she sells at a huge profit margin, the final consumer ll suffer for it.

Most times, her customers are from ibadan and Lagos. Most times, they buy at very cheap price and sell high.

I wish we can all emulate her goodness, the world would have been a better place to be
May God bless her and put barka in her business.
Interesting insights.

CrimeRe: Kidnapped Travellers To Ekiti Regain Freedom After Ransom Payment by Konquest: 1:57pm On Dec 29, 2024
Master.JayJay:
Some travellers abducted on Emure-ile Road in Emure Local Government Area of Ekiti State have regained their freedom from the kidnappers’ den.

The victims, who were traveling in an 18-seater bus, were abducted on Sunday night by gunmen while returning from Onitsha in Anambra State to Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

The gunmen reportedly contacted the families of the victims, demanding N30 million per person for their release.

However, the victims were released in the early hours of Wednesday morning after paying ransoms ranging from N1 million to N2 million to the kidnappers.

Narrating his ordeal, the driver of the bus, Mr. Sunday Emmanuel, recounted that the incident occurred very close to Emure-Ekiti shortly after they left Eporo-Ekiti.

He revealed that he was released in the early hours of Christmas Day following a ransom payment of N1.5 million, while other passengers reportedly paid ransoms ranging from N1 million to N2 million.

Emmanuel stated that they were fed only Garri mixed with red oil and water for several days by three heavily armed bandits, who appeared to be familiar with the local area.

He stated that they were not subjected to torture, aside from the bruises sustained while being herded through the bush.

Emmanuel confirmed that all the passengers, including a woman and a female corps member, had also regained their freedom.

He said, “They left us in Ago Paanu in Owo area, Ikare Road. We don’t actually know the name of the place, it was the people that lived there that came out to talk to us.

“We trekked the bush from Emure. We trekked through the nights and once it was 5 am, we would stop to take a nap.

“There were two women among us including a female corps member but they were not touched.

“The kidnappers told us they came from Niger Republic. They know all those bushes because we were passing through where cattle are usually herded.

“They are just three men but the machine guns in their hands can’t be dared. They told us that we can only get those weapons from soldiers alone and they have massive extra bullets.

“They don’t eat with us but what we discovered is that one of them would go out to get something. They usually mixed Garri with red oil and we would eat it.

“They took N1.5m from me. Some paid N1m, N2m, 1.45m. They did not harm anybody among us except some bruises we sustained while passing through the bush.

“They kidnapped us in Emure-Ekiti. We had left Eporo, we were about to enter Emure-Ekiti town when the incident occurred.

“It was after five minutes after we left the checkpoint that it happened. Even soldiers at the roadblock not far from where we were kidnapped cannot deny that they didn’t hear the gunshots”, he narrated.

There's no mix up, but there is a surprise. The tweets in the first and second posts were accompanied by the exact same pictures. However, Governor Sanwo-Olu only acknowledged the vice chancellor (the vice chancellor is the person standing and holding a microphone). That's the surprise.

The governor's senior special assistant on new media acknowledged both the vice chancellor and Dr Finnih (see the second post on this thread).
I get it now and appreciate your clarification. Indeed, anyone who has ever seen the well-known 82-year-old (as of 2024) Dr. Abayomi Finnih before now would immediately recognize him in a crowd due to his light skin complexion.

I remember he once said in an interview years back thstone of his ancestors was very light skinned, close to the "albinism trait" and that's how the family name "Finnih" came about (from the Yoruba word "Afinni" or albinism).

@DDYLO

For real? Is Governor Bala Mohammed from a minority ethnic group in Bauchi State? I used to just assume he's a Fulani guy! What's the name of his minority ethnic group?

I have always been aware that Tafawa Balewa is from the Jarawa ethnic group in Tafawa Balewa LGA but some ignorant people especially within those secessionist groups till date keep referring to him as a Fulani man. NOT every Northern Nigeria top politician is a Hausa or Fulani.

The advanced history books and archival materials I've read for decades state CLEARLY that back in the early 1800s to the late 1800s, the Bauchi and Gombe States areas (other areas of the Middle Belt suffered the same fate) suffered massively from attacks and depopulations from Fulani jihadist bandits who captured many men, women and children who were sold off during the slave trade across the Sahara desert leading to North African cities and countries of Tripoli in Libya, Morocco, etc, and a few were sent towards the Atlantic Coast to be shipped off on slave ships going to the Americas.

On the cold biting and mean streets of Chicago in the uptown neighborhood on the intersection of Sheridan and Wilson is a sight to behold. An apocalyptic presentation of the human experience confronts and assaults your visage and brings you to shock. It’s like the land of the zombies. Up to 500 displaced citizens in sub zero degrees temperatures all shaking as the cold assaults their bones and flesh despite being bundled up in thermal gear. All queued up waiting outside the church for shared free donations and free food from the Salvation Army truck serving hot soup . This is the sight that assaulted my visage everyday as I stomped the streets of uptown Chicago

Fast forward today the 26th of December 2024 I was confronted by the exact same replica of the Chicago situation. I was gobsmacked. In the maruwa section of lekki at the intersection of oniwude street and Kuboye just in front of pinnacle petrol station it was like an apocalyptic movie set. I was enthralled by the weirdness around me. There were like 500 people all looking different variables of apocalyptic wretchedness all queued in front of this church waiting for free donations and free food. It’s amazing. It’s the exact recreation of what I saw in Chicago. Bobo Chicago has turned Nigeria to Chicago 😳😳

Konqu.est
How's it going bro?

Whoa! "Bobo Chicago"... and the Chitown (Chicago) Salvation Army truck soup kitchen and free donations equivalent in Lekki. Lol. Is this meant to be a SATIRE OR what?

Tbh though, the rate of homelessness is growing in major U.S. cities (especially in California) and globally due to a variety of reasons chief of which is rising global inflation. My younger brother who I told you lives in "Gunchester" with his fam still spoke to me last week about this spiralling cost of living due to hyperinflation in the UK.

If Ukraine and Russia don't end that war next year, and Israel keeps the battle going with the Iranian-backed gangs in the Middle East, then we're gonna see some more of these situations affecting the average folks on the street level queuing up for free food and donations.

There's bound to be a recession next year in the U.S. that will crash the global stock markets based off of the historical market cycles that are clear on the charts.

You're the esoteric master here though. So, you know more.

Just my 2 cents.

2.1 tons cocaine seizure: 4 drug lords including a Jamaican get 28yrs in jail, forfeit VGC houses, N67m, $50,000

Four drug kingpins arrested in connection with the historic seizure of 2,139.55 kilograms of cocaine at an Ikorodu residential estate in 2022 have been convicted by a Federal High Court, Lagos, presided over by Justice Yellim Bogoro who sentenced them to various jail terms totalling twenty-eight (28) years with hard labour.

The convicts identified as Soji Jubril Oke, 71; Wasiu Akinade, 55; Emmanuel Arinze Chukwu, 67; and Kelvin Christopher Smith, 44, a Jamaican, were charged with six counts in charge number: FHC/L/607C/2022 in October and December 2022, while the trial of the fifth suspect, Oguntolure Sunday arraigned along with them is still ongoing in court. The charges border on conspiracy to form and operate a drug trafficking organization (DTO); management and financing of a DTO; and importation and possession of 2,139.55 kilograms of cocaine, among others.

Operatives of a special operations unit of NDLEA had in a well-coordinated and intelligence-led operation on Sunday 18th September 2022 raided a house located at 6 Olukuola Crescent, Solebo estate, Ikorodu, Lagos where over 2.1 tons of cocaine were seized, the largest singular cocaine seizure in the history of Nigeria’s anti-narcotic operations. The drug kingpins were picked from hotels and their hideouts in different parts of Lagos between the night of Sunday 18th and Monday 19th of September 2022.

After over two years of diligent prosecution, the trial judge handed the Jamaican, Kelvin Christopher Smith four years imprisonment with hard labour; Emmanuel Arinze Chukwu got a total of 16 years; Soji Jubril Oke got five years with hard labour and Wasiu Akinade three years with hard labour. The trial judge however gave the convicts varying options of fine except one of them who will serve his full jail term without an option of fine.

They were also to forfeit a grey colour Toyota Tacoma SUV marked AAA-734HT registered in the name of Emmanuel Chukwu; $50,000:00 (Fifty Thousand US Dollars) belonging to Chukwu; N55,099,509.50 (Fifty-Five Million, Ninety-Nine Thousand, Five Hundred and Nine Naira, Fifty Kobo only) also belonging to Chukwu; the sum of N9,003,168.06 (Nine Million Three Thousand, One Hundred and Sixty-Eight Naira Six Kobo only) belonging to Wasiu Akinade and N3,052,295.20 (Three Million, Fifty-Two Thousand, Two Hundred and Ninety-Five Naira Twenty Kobo only), also belonging to Akinade.

Confirming the judgement, the spokesperson of NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, said the Agency also in another suit marked FHC/L/MISC/672/2024 and filed before Justice Bogoro on 9th of December 2024 after an initial interim forfeiture order, secured the final forfeiture of two houses linked to members of the drug cartel. According to the trial court:

“That an Order of final forfeiture and confiscation is granted in favour of the Federal Government of Nigeria, Landed Property/House Number 6 Olokunola Street, Sholebo Estate, Ikorodu Lagos, Lagos State, as contained in Exhibit NDLEA 2A, 2B, and 2C attached to this application used for the storage and concealment of 2,139.55kg (More Than Two Tons) Cocaine, an illicit substance similar to Heroin and LSD.

“That an Order of final forfeiture and confiscation is granted in favour of the Federal Government of Nigeria, Landed Property/House Number J9, Road 3, Close 1, Victoria Garden City (VGC) Estate, Lagos, Lagos State, as contained in Exhibit NDLEA 3 attached to this application reasonably believed to be bought with proceeds derived from trafficking in illicit drug substances (proceeds of crime) as in relief 1 of this Motion.
