Jason Carter, the chairman of the Carter Center, said in a text message on Wednesday that his grandfather’s ballot had been deposited at a drop box at a courthouse in Americus, Ga. In Georgia, a relative may return a completed absentee ballot for a voter.
For weeks, according to the Carter family, the former president was privately playing down becoming a centenarian. Instead, Mr. Carter’s relatives said, he was most eager about voting for Vice President Kamala Harris.
Under Georgia law, Oct. 7 was the first day that county registrars could distribute domestic absentee ballots. Elections officials began mailing military and overseas ballots last month. Georgia’s in-person early voting period began on Tuesday, and regulators reported record turnout.
Elections officials said they were not certain when Mr. Carter, who spent many days of his post-presidency on Carter Center election-monitoring missions around the world, first cast a ballot of his own. But in 1943, Georgia became the first state to lower its voting age to 18; when Georgia voters decided to amend the state Constitution, Mr. Carter was months away from his 19th birthday.
Soon enough, though, he was in elected office himself. In 1962, he won a seat in the State Senate, after a chaotic scandal in which Mr. Carter’s opponent initially benefited from a ballot-stuffing scheme. This was disclosed on Wednesday during a One-Day Stakeholders’ Meeting on the People’s Perception Survey regarding the Translation of Lagos State Laws into Yoruba, organised by the Law Reform Commission in conjunction with the Lagos Bureau of Statistics, Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget. The event took place at the Debt Management Office, STO Resources Centre, Assbifi Road, Ikeja.
The initiative, which will utilise OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology for the translation process, aims to ensure that the diverse Yoruba-speaking population in Lagos State and beyond can easily understand and comply with the laws governing the State’s affairs.
Speaking on the initiative, the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Law Reform Commission, Mrs. Umul-Kulthum Ninilomo Bashar said that translating Lagos State laws into Yoruba is not just about language but also about empowering people by enabling them to access and comprehend the laws in their mother tongue.
Describing the initiative as a groundbreaking approach to legal reform, combining the latest AI technology with the cultural realities of the residents, Bashar disclosed that the project aims to translate at least 70 laws annually, create a digital library of Lagos State laws in Yoruba, and set a new standard for other states to follow. She said that efforts have been made to also ensure the Ogu language is incorporated in the law reforms after the Yoruba language.
The Executive Secretary added that the initiative will not only improve public confidence in the government but also lead to the development of a state-of-the-art, AI-compliant interactive website, thereby enhancing the state’s legal framework. She noted that in addition to enhancing legal literacy, the project is expected to strengthen the relationship between citizens and the government.
In her words: “For too long, language barriers have led to misunderstandings and non-compliance, making law enforcement more costly and creating friction between the government and its people.”
She assured attendees that the project would significantly reduce enforcement costs and foster greater voluntary compliance with laws that have often been misunderstood due to language barriers.
Also, speaking at the event, the Yoruba Consultant, for the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mrs. Adejoke Deborah Olajide emphasised the cultural significance of translating Lagos State laws into Yoruba. She noted that language plays a vital role in understanding the legal framework and ensuring citizens’ participation in governance.
Olajide stated, “Yoruba is the native language of a significant portion of the population, and this translation project will allow more people to understand the laws that govern them. This initiative will bridge the gap between legal jargon and the everyday language spoken by the majority.”
She further highlighted the importance of preserving the Yoruba language through legal documentation, saying, “This effort is not only about legal comprehension but also about preserving our linguistic heritage for future generations.”
She expressed optimism that the project would set a precedent for other states, contributing to a more inclusive and culturally sensitive legal environment.
Earlier in his address, the Chairman, Community Development Advisory Council, Alhaji, Hamzat Azeez said the essence of the initiative is to enable people to be aware and get the law disseminated to the grassroots, saying the residents need to know what the government has in mind and what the law says.
He maintained that ignorance is not an excuse in law, noting that it is very important the law is interpreted in the native language people understand for better awareness and compliance.

Senior Israeli officials said security sources consider there to be a 'high probability' that Sinwar was eliminated, Israeli news outlet N12 reports, though reports have still not been confirmed.
It comes as graphic images have circulated online purporting to show the body of the terrorist leader.

The statement went on: 'In the building where the terrorists were killed, no signs of the presence of abductees were found in the area.
'The IDF and Shin Bet forces operating in the area continue to operate under the necessary caution.'
Israel said its ground forces had identified a group of terrorists in a building in an unknown location in Gaza, fired at them, and then an exchange of fire began.
The force entered the building and saw that one of the terrorists resembled Sinwar, according to reports.
The man's corpse is now reportedly being examined with DNA and dental tests to ascertain whether it does belong to the Hamas leader.
While there has not yet been any official confirmation, officials told Israeli media that Sinwar was eliminated, Reuters reports.

He said officials could now confirm Sinwar was "killed today by IDF [Israeli Defence Forces] soldiers".

"The elimination of Sinwar creates an opportunity for the immediate release of the hostages and a potential change that could lead to a new reality in Gaza - without Hamas and without Iranian control."
It comes after photographs circulated online earlier claimed to show Sinwar's dead body.
The images have not been independently verified.
If he has died as claimed, it would mean Israel has eliminated its main target since it began strikes and ground invasions in Gaza in response to the Hamas incursion last year.
The Israeli military said in a statement earlier today that officials were checking the possibility that Sinwar had died.

She stated, “UNICEF is committed to promoting hand hygiene among the communities we serve. This was disclosed by the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Audu, in a statement released by Salamatu Jibaniya, the ministry’s Head of Information and Public Relations Unit, on Thursday in Abuja.
Audu noted that the investment aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s economic diversification policy under the Renewed Hope Agenda, reflecting the company’s confidence in Tinubu’s leadership to drive industrialization and boost the nation’s prospects through the steel sector.
The minister assured the company of the Federal Government’s commitment to providing an enabling environment and fiscal incentives to support sustainable operations.
He added that the ministry would review the company’s proposal and engage relevant authorities to explore concessionary benefits within the existing operational framework, emphasizing that this initiative aims to attract and facilitate foreign direct investment.
Mr. Li Shuang, President of Inner Galaxy Steel Company Limited, had earlier met with the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Audu, to seek the ministry’s support for a $300 million investment to establish a new steel plant in Nigeria.
Shuang explained that the plant would focus on producing specialized steel products, including plates, angles, beams, and stainless steel, among others. He highlighted that the investment would boost Nigeria’s steel production capacity, reduce dependence on imported specialized steel, conserve foreign exchange, and generate employment opportunities.
According to Shuang, the project is expected to create 10,000 direct and indirect jobs, alongside other economic multiplier effects. He also noted that the company has been operating in Nigeria for over 20 years, with its existing investments in steel production surpassing $1 billion.
Read the fine prints when dealing with especially the Mainland Chinese before signing any documents. The Hong Kong Chinese are a lot more Westernized and trustworthy with the British colonial experience they had before Hong Kong was returned to China at the end of the lease period.

What I know is that Forbes will NOT have you listed if you are connected to any allegations of criminality or fraud, and second, your net worth can easily be verified if your companies are listed on any of the global stock exchanges. The eloquent Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu of Lagos said in the 1 hour interview (that I watched via online live stream two days ago which he had with Seun Okinbaloye of Channel Television to celebrate the commencement of the new Red Line rail route and other Lagos State milestones) that Lagos State workers will be paid N85,000 minumum wage to start with and that he wishes to increase it to N100,000 from the start of 2025 because Lagos residents pay a premium to live in the state. Lagos State goverment workers also work remotely now and only go to work 3 times a week. He was very CLEAR on that and I was impressed that as a senior Banker who rose to the prestigious rank of a bank Treasurer, he reeled off some useful economics statistics and other developmental data offhand.
There wasn't enough time to finish that interview with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu because he was about to talk about agricultural development in Lagos State but Okinbaloye had to round off the program. I look forward to watching the second part of the interview if it's going to come up anytime soon. It was nice seeing Sanwo-Olu display robust positivity and he emphasized on the importance of being able to "see and conceive things" when Okinbaloye asked him about the Red Line rail route and how Lagos State was able to finished the project in two years and in record time. Sanwo-Olu said if the Red Line project financing and construction hadn't kicked off two years ago, it would have cost more to begin the construction.
There's more to be done in Lagos State and Nigeria in terms of bringing down hyperinflation and the high cost of food, drugs and other essentials, but it was refreshing seeing in a democratic dispensation the completion of major rail projects such as the Red Line in addition to the Blue Line that had earlier been completed in addition to plans to start the Purple Line route, the Lekki-Epe International Airport, and the Fourth Mainland Bridge based on the availability of long-term finance.

They can go a step further by refitting those trains to use CNG fuel as well in order to reduce the cost of operations and transportation fares like the Nigerian Railway Corporation boss suggested in early 2024. Fidelis Okhiria, the NRC boss said there are plans to convert all the diesel trains of NRC to use CNG and reduce transportation costs. If this CNG is applied to train freight cargo movement from agricultural produce and non-agricultural godds from North to South, it would massively reduce the cost of farm produce sold in the markets and other retail stores and hence quickly reduce hyperinflation.
This is the time for all facets of Naija to maximize the benefits of CNG as a major gas-based country with gas reserves that will last for 97 years of continuous use. There are currently about 75 countries worldwide were CNG is being used with CNG fuel stations.

“This is a real city that is rising from the ground up...we have put together an innovative process that will fund the electricity, water, digital infrastructure and roads that will be the foundation of this new city,” he said.

I watched the full SABC video interview and it must be emphasized here and now that the young American singer's beating of Rihanna back in 2009 was horrendous as can be gleaned from the pictures which can still be seen online. As a support of gender-based-violence initiatives myself, Chris has also since his major physical attack on Rihanna gone ahead to be a supporter of gender-based-violence programs and has reconciled with Rihanna, so, I do NOT think this move in SA by Women For Change will stop his already sold out December 2024 concerts.

I discovered years back that Name Change statistics from newspaper classified ads show that 9 out of 10 Yoruba men still prefer to get married to Yoruba women (and this is consistent among other ethnicities worldwide who prefer to marry their own kind). Most White women prefer to marry White men and vice versa based on surveys. The remaining 1 in 10 Yoruba men get married to women from other ethnicities (across religious lines and racial groups) within Nigeria and in locations where you have large Yoruba Diaspora populations in the United States, the UK, Canada, Germany, France, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, SA, etc.
The MOST important thing is to sustain whatever cross-cultural marriage you're into and NOT to just fantasize about marrying from a specific ethnic group. I read some weeks ago some people calling out APC for this palliative and rice distribution. I ABSOLUTELY agree with you (as a solutions-based man myself who likes to see the deployment of creative solutions in solving global societal problems and NOT complain unnecessarily and ramble irritatingly about issues) that the rail cargo haulage that was used pre-1960 and post-1960 (till about the mid-1980s) to move agricultural and non-agricultural cargo back-and-forth between the North and South of Nigeria is a large aspect of the ULTIMATE solution to reducing hyperinflation and food costs within a short space of time. Although the Abuja-Kaduna rail line got ruthlessly attacked with some people killed and kidnapped by terrorists in 2022, there are advanced satellite tracking and imaging devices, small surveillance drones and attack drones that can be deployed rapidly along the rail tracks to ensure that the rail freight cargo and rail passenger movements are NOT disrupted ever again.
A few months ago in 2024, I read online that the Nigerian Railway Corporation boss gave hints that the NRC is going to refit all their trains to use CNG (methane) as well to drastically reduce costs. This would give an extra advantage in reducing the price of commodities moving interstate. I get a sense too that some folks in government who should have a sense of URGENCY are NOT doing so by releasing urgent funds for this CNG project for the trains because they do NOT seem to understand fully that time wasting can trigger a major social unrest that they will NOT be able to control. In a worse case scenario, a military coup could occur right out of that spontaneous social unrest, and based off of the fact that past military dictatorships in Nigeria are even far WORSE in terms of massive corruption and repression of free speech in the decades past, it's better for these politicians to wake up and NOT take the folks for granted because the solutions to make the Nigerian economy more robust and reduce food and drug prices... and hyperinflation are RIGHT there in front of everyone to see! It's just for these multi-millionaire and multi-billionaire rich guys right from the Presidency and the Governors to come down to the street level and relate with the people on that same street level in order to know what their daily needs and wants are. It's NOT rocket science. They should "just do it!"
Last but not least, I also saw a Channels Television video a few months back in 2024 indicating that the Lagos State Goverment is gearing up to refit all their water transportation ferries and boats (that ply the water routes between Lagos Mainland and other islands such as Victoria Island) with CNG fuel kits in order to save cost and also reduce transportation fares.
I do not yet have new updates on how far these CNG refits for the Nigerian Railway trains and the water transportation and ferry services in Lagos State have gone, but it shows that some folks are thinking creatively. Robust implementation that everyone can see and feel is the key.
