BlackViper: Scientists said Tuesday they have turned human skin cells into eggs and fertilised them with sperm in the lab for the first time — a breakthrough that is hoped to one day let infertile people have children.
The technology is still years away from potentially becoming available to aspiring parents, the US-led team of scientists warned.
But outside experts said the proof-of-concept research could eventually change the meaning of infertility, which affects one in six people worldwide.
If successful, the technology called in-vitro gametogenesis (IVG) would allow older women or women who lack eggs for other reasons to genetically reproduce, Paula Amato, the co-author of a new study announcing the achievement, told AFP.
“It also would allow same-sex couples to have a child genetically related to both partners,” said Amato, a researcher at the Oregon Health & Science University in the United States.
Scientists have been making significant advances in this field in recent years, with Japanese researchers announcing in July they had created mice with two biological fathers.
But the new study, published in the journal Nature Communications, marks a major advance by using DNA from humans, rather than mice.
The scientists first removed the nucleus from normal skin cells and transferred them into a donor egg which had its nucleus removed. This technique, called somatic cell nuclear transfer, was used to clone Dolly the sheep in 1996.
However a problem still had to be overcome: skin cells have 46 chromosomes, but eggs have 23.
The scientists managed to remove these extra chromosomes using a process they are calling “mitomeiosis”, which mimics how cells normally divide.
They created 82 developing eggs called oocytes, which were then fertilised by sperm via in vitro fertilisation (IVF).
After six days, less than nine percent of the embryos developed to the point that they could hypothetically be transferred to the uterus for a standard IVF process.
However the embryos displayed a range of abnormalities, and the experiment was ended.
While the nine-percent rate was low, the researchers noted that during natural reproduction only around a third of embryos make it to the IVF-ready “blastocyst” stage.
Amato estimated the technology was at least a decade away from becoming widely available.
“The biggest hurdle is trying to achieve genetically normal eggs with the correct number and complement of chromosomes,” she said.
Breakthrough
Ying Cheong, a reproductive medicine researcher at the UK’s University of Southampton, hailed the “exciting” breakthrough.
“For the first time, scientists have shown that DNA from ordinary body cells can be placed into an egg, activated, and made to halve its chromosomes, mimicking the special steps that normally create eggs and sperm,” she said.
“While this is still very early laboratory work, in the future it could transform how we understand infertility and miscarriage, and perhaps one day open the door to creating egg- or sperm-like cells for those who have no other options.”
Other researchers trying to create eggs in the lab are using a different technique. It involves reprogramming skin cells into what are called induced pluripotent stem cells — which have the potential to develop into any cell in the body — then turning those into eggs.
“It’s too early to tell which method will be more successful,” Amato said. “Either way, we are still many years away.”
The researchers followed existing US ethical guidelines regulating the use of embryos, the study said.

Ironfaceman: Police in Charlotte, North Carolina, are investigating the death of a stowaway found Sunday morning inside the landing gear compartment of an American Airlines flight.
The plane had recently arrived in Charlotte from Europe, and was undergoing maintenance when the body was discovered, according to a statement from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.
The individual, whose identity and origin remain unknown, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
An American Airlines spokesperson told CNN affiliate WSOC that the airline is working with law enforcement.
Charlotte Douglas International Airport said in a statement it was aware of the “tragic discovery.”
“We are deeply saddened by this news and will support Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) investigation as needed,” it said, adding that airport operations continue as normal.
CNN has reached out to American Airlines, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s Office for more information.

Not because paying tax is wrong but because he is putting the cart before the horse. Make corruption punishable by death and see corruption grounded to 2%. That way Nigerians are happier paying tax.

Nigeria and other African countries have to do the same to deal with all kinds of heinous crimes (and STOP being politically correct because of these human right groups based in the EU and North America), in addition to a President being populist, he or she has to equally be firm and ruthless with the bad elements who seek to destabilize any country via economic sabotage, inciting propaganda and hate speech. A lot of ignorant people do NOT realize that Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore who they like to talk about and compare with Nigerian leaders was a dictator (a benevolent dictatorship) who Singaporeans were NOT happy with because of his early tough policies which later brought advanced, economic, social, and technological, development to his multi-ethnic country of 80% Singaporeans of Chinese descent, with Malays, Indians and others making up the rest of the population. I FIRST bought and read back in the early 2000s, a fantastic copy of the late Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew's over 700-page book, "From Third World to First: The Singapore Story" which gave me deep insights into how a country such as Singapore can be developed from a fishing settlement of migrants from Mainland China to an advanced financial markets and technology hub.. Based off of online news for a couple of years now, aside from the FACT that Asaba is the Delta State capital, there's been a relentless influx from across the river Niger of people from especially Anambra State to live and build houses in Asaba, due the heinous crimes and insecurities in the South East (maybe excluding Enugu and Ebonyi States) and that is definitely the reason why the rent is that high NOT all the usual toxic balderdash that "man-boy" you quoted has been rambling on about the Nigerian President Tinubu and taxes.

All over the world, taxes are compulsory for the citizens, BUT officially in Nigeria, ONLY 10% of Nigerians pay taxes or shoulder the burden of development for the rest of Nigerian. President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform chief, Taiwo Oyedele, has declared that all Nigerians, including women engaged in prostitution, popularly called “runs,” and individuals involved in illegal dealings, will be required to pay tax once the new reforms take effect in January 2026, News360 Nigeria reports.
Oyedele, who heads the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policies and Reforms, made this known while addressing members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, City of David parish in Lagos, over the weekend.
He explained that the new law, signed by President Tinubu in June, mandates taxation on all income without distinguishing whether the source is lawful or illicit.
“In the eyes of the law, income is income,” he said.
“If somebody is doing run girls, they go and look for men to sleep with; you know that’s a service. They will pay tax on it.”
According to Oyedele, the reforms were designed to ensure that every service or transaction rendered for money, regardless of legality, falls under the taxable bracket.
He emphasised that the law itself does not have the mechanism to separate legitimate earnings from illegitimate ones, hence all income is deemed taxable.
The reforms, he noted, are part of efforts to widen Nigeria’s tax base and improve government revenue generation ahead of the 2026 fiscal year.
