When I was based in Abuja, there was this canteen we used to eat everyday which belonged to a southern borno woman, biu lga precisely......this woman's cooking was damn sumptuous, jollof, fried rice, rice a stew, vegetable, egusi even porridge beans, all were heavenly......omoh till today I still remember her food and I am from the south.....I am the type that loves meat to be very tender and this woman does justice to it all the time.....she cooks meat perfectly than most southerners I have seen.....this was about 17 years ago and I still remember her.

You guys should learn to be specific, not every Northerner or Northern state is the same.
Be reminded that Kwara, Kogi, Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, e.t.c are all tagged "Northern" States (including Abuja).

The comments above are all specifically pointing towards the Hausas, hence, the word "North" shouldn't apply here because not only the Hausas live in Northern Nigeria
FoodRe: This Is Tuwo Shinkafa: One Of The Most Popular Swallow In Northern Nigeria by Konquest: 1:20am On Sep 08, 2025
LocalFARMERS:
Tuwon Shinkafa (Rice swallow) is made from 100% Rice. It is a major swallow in Northern Nigeria. So many eat this as their major swallow at home, on a daily basis. It is also served in special occasions like weddings, naming Ceremony, Birthday parties, special occasions etc.

Tuwo Shinkafa go well with either Egusi soup, bitter leaf, Groundnut Soup, vegetables etc. It doesn't go well with draw Soup (my opinion).

Growing up in the North I didn’t really take note but I just realized that

Yoruba restaurant —> Yoruba+Igbo+Hausa Customers

Igbo restaurant —> Igbo+Yoruba+Calabar Customers

Calabar restaurant—> Yoruba+Igbo+Hausa+Calabar

Hausa restaurant—> Northerners

Just last month there was a small riot in the company I work for.
The Hausa woman that cooks in our Canteen serves only Northern food and soups.
We have 70% Northern workers and 30% Southerners.

The South boys usually prefer to leave the company and go to a restaurant far in the village just to eat lunch everyday. I have never seen them eat our food.

The company had to bring in a Calabar woman to cook for them after much protest. This woman’s food is more expensive but they don’t complain.

But I will rather eat northern food than to eat that some people prepare with toilet broom
The short manual "rafia ewedu soup blender" in the attached image right BELOW is called "Ijabe" by the Yoruba folks. An "Ijabe" is short and NOT a broom used for sweeping which the Yoruba folks call "Igbale!" You do come off as being "unintelligent" with your post and this is what the OP of this thread is trying to correct... The deliberately manufactured prejudice from some of you towards the cuisines of other ethnicities.

Second, the "Ijabe" [just like the "pepper or grain grinding stones"] used in African communities for centuries now have been replaced with the electric blenders. In the absence of electricity, then folks resort to the emergency use of the "Ijabe and grinding stones." I once corrected a boy in 2023 (or 2024) who posted his confirmation bias towards ewudu soup and I corrected him with some of the specifics here.

Third, the rafia is got from the rafia palm tree and is used to make at least 10 different industrial and non-industrial items from the famed Ijabe, to roofs, to fabrics, sacks, brooms for sweeping, and more.

Okpa is not a northern food. What we have is alale or moi moi as it's called in the south
"Olele" and "Moyin Moyin" [contracted to "Moin Moin"] NOT "alale or moi moi (sic)." That's the correct spelling in the Yoruba language which refers to the sticky nature of the delicacy. "Olele and Moin Moin" are used interchangeably based on regional locations among the Yorubas.

If she's truly confirmed to be a drug addict, a hooker and more, then she has to be engaged in comprehensive and effective rehabilitation. A lot of former addicts worldwide have been restored to their original or normal states of mind. The Psychiatric hospitals, the NDLEA and a popular pentecostal church have effective detox programs for drug addicts. Failure to do this, she'll go back to her negative ways of stealing, and sex for money. It's the same for the males. It's the dopamine rush effect on the brain, so the impulse to steal isn't deliberate.

Boss ke? As if he will keep quiet if Eazi treats his daughter like an employee. One thing I have observed about Nigerian marriages is that, men will treat you according to your status. There is no way in hell will Eazi boss over Temi knowing full well what awaits him. All that advice from Otedola is just a misyarn, and for social media validation.
I like the way you matter-of-factly stated your thoughts. As a father, there's NO way I'm gonna allow any of my sons to treat a young woman like a door mat (or allow some young guy to do the same to my biological daughter in the name of a social construct called marriage).

'Femi was definitely speaking "metaphorically." He knows FULL WELL that marriages are partnerships (having been married to Nana Otedola for over 30 years) while emphasizing on that subtle art of a man taking the LEAD role despite the "complementary" nature of ideal long-term marriages.

Billionaire businessman Femi Otedola gave a heartfelt speech at his daughter Temi’s wedding, praising her union with Tosin (Mr Eazi) while urging her to respect her husband as her “boss.”

He also encouraged the couple to keep their challenges private and continue building their love together

“You found a great guy, very great guy, blessed guy. He’s come from a very decent family. One thing I’ll advise you… you have to succumb to the whims and caprices of your husband. Okay? He’s your husband, he’s your boss. There’s no more dad, don’t call me up,” Otedola said.

He continued: “One thing I like about both of you and I’ve observed is, you’re truly in love with each other. Truly, truly in love with each other. Temi is an entrepreneur. Tosin is an entrepreneur. So you match each other.

“This is made in heaven. For Tosin, you’re going to go places. I’ve seen the entrepreneurial skill in you. When we were much younger, we used to think we used to hustle, but not like your generation. You are hustlers, real hustlers. And it’s always paid off. Continue to love, Temi.”

Otedola further counseled the newlyweds to handle disagreements privately, emphasising the importance of keeping marital issues within the confines of their relationship.

“When you have issues, problems, just keep it within yourself. Never call any friend that have this problem. Just keep it within your walls. And God will bless you and bless your marriage”, he said.

I've been a veteran member of this discussion forum since 2005 (20 years ago) with an older NL account which I still use [and registered with my personal dial-up Internet connection in 2005] after stumbling upon a list of new or emerging Nigerian discussion fora for Diasporans.

Just for historical clarity, I started using the Internet since the mid-1990s and had my personal dial-up Internet access as well, so I NEVER used the cafe. Dial-up Internet access was available for those residing in Nigeria especially in the late 1990s but NOT widely used for personal connectivity because of cost and sometimes slow connectivity with Internet Service Providers [ISPs] such as Linkserve, Hyperia, Cyberspace, Infoweb, Skannet, etc, coming into existence.

It was only in the 2000s that DSL, Cable TV Internet, Satellite Internet and wireless Internet connections started emerging in Nigeria with varying degrees of price options. The cybercafes no doubt helped with Internet penetration from the late 1990s right into the 2000s as cost of access dropped.

I hope that helps.

Rather than hold their state governors and local government chairmen accountable even after getting the information that they get these allocations in billions on a monthly basis no!, they must keep asking "where's the money going". Foreign AffairsRe: “From Third World To First.” How Lee Kuan Yew Transformed Singapore by Konquest:
seunmsg:
Lee Kuan Yew was a reformist like Bola Tinubu is right now. Unlike Bola Tinubu though, Lee was a dictator who didn’t allow opposition and ethnic hatred to distract him in the process of reforming Singapore. He held tight to power and ruled for 30 straight years.

Nobody talked down on him after just two years in office. He was given absolute support by everyone just to ensure the reforms work out well. Singapore is also a small country with no ethnic or religious division. There was no ethnic governors and a corrupt National Assembly to carry along. Even at that, it took him 30 years to get the job done.

So, you want to compare him with another reformist who has only served for two years as the president of a very big country with over 200 million people, over 250 ethnicities and multiple religious groups.

With Tinubu, Nigeria is on the right track and all indices confirms this. However, it will take years of we being on the right track for the results to start getting to the ordinary people. It is a marathon and not a sprint. We shall get there if we stay true to the cause.
True that!

You have some historical grasp of how Yew managed to stay in power with his autocratic rule.

I FIRST purchased my personal copy of the late Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew's book "From Third World to First: The Singapore Story" in the early 2000s and read the over 700-page book.

What Yew did to transform the very tiny city-state of Singapore with 80% of Chinese descent were largely done by Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo GCFR SAN and his team who were ahead of their times in the 1950s with several Industrial Estates, Cocoa House, Western House on Lagos Island and more.

Lee Kuan Yew was indeed authoritarian in his style and that stifled political dissent and press freedoms! So the OP of this thread was irresponsibly making misleading comments and persistently casting daily aspersions on the Nigerian President and Lagos which was MOST distasteful and unacceptable and should call for a ban! Besides the ethnic Chinese of Singapore (who mainly migrated from Guangdong in Mainland China) are about 80%, ethnic Malays and Indians constitute the other groups who were relatively easier to manage. This is unlike Nigeria with over 300 distinct ethnic groups where the enervating crab mentality reigns supreme in the quest by different power centers to gain central political power.
Foreign AffairsRe: “From Third World To First.” How Lee Kuan Yew Transformed Singapore by Konquest:
Guestmale:
Hypocrisy of the highest order. Tinubu has not introduced half of strict and tough measures the prime minister introduced to rebuilt his nation, but you people are already crying and calling him names because it isn't your preferred candidate.
Succinctly stated.

I'm only just seeing this thread on the NL front page. The OP sounded totally uninformed about the specifics of how Singapore got transformed and he's irresponsibly lashing out blindly at imaginary enemies! He certainly hasn't read the book FULLY (which I read over 20 years ago) in order to realize how very strict policies were introduced that Singaporeans cried out. Besides, Singapore is just a small city-state with those of Chinese origin being about 80% of Singapore while the rest are Indians, Malays, etc.

I FIRST bought and read the massive over 700-page book, "From Third World to First: The Singapore Story" back in the early 2000s (over 20 years ago). I read the iconic book from front to back 3 times and took notes. The book sits right among other book collections in one of my personal home libraries.

What Mininister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew did WASN'T rocket science. Back from the 1950s, and beyond, Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, GCFR, SAN, did the same by transforming the Old Western Region with many FIRSTS such as the massive construction of many Industrial Estates [located at Ilupeju, Iganmu, Ikeja, Oluyole, etc] Cocoa House in Ibadan, Western House on Lagos Island, free education, the first television station in Africa, etc, LONG before Lee Kuan Yew started his own painful tranformation
of the tiny Singapore. If the Military hadn't struck and compounded stagnation and corruption, the likes of Western Region would have been a Super Power within a Nigeria. I'm in really in total support of an exit strategy for the different ethnicities with the creation of about 9 countries out of Nigeria and you will see the Yorubas with a massive Diaspora population in major world population centers (and other ethnic groups literally develop faster than a speeding bullet). It's the crab mentality 🦀 and ethnic rivalries that's been holding Nigeria's progress down as a significant underachiever for decades!

It is even instructive that the now President 'Bola Tinubu's Chief-of-Staff, Babatunde Raji-Fasola actually flew to Singapore to pay a visit to see, and bounce ideas off the now late Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew when Fasola became the Governor of Lagos State. I was highly impressed that Babatunde Raji-Fasola met with Yew and immediately knew he would further bring some more dynamism into the Government.
CultureRe: Elele Kingdom In Ikwerre Celebrate New Yam Festival (photos) by Konquest: 5:54pm On Sep 06, 2025
Almunjid:
No, Ikwerre people are not confused; such occurrences are simply a result of history. Migration often leads some tribes to abandon their original identities and adopt those of their hosts. For example, in Kogi State, Oworo people—who are ethnically Yoruba—can now be found in places like Karara, yet they no longer speak their ancestral language. Instead, they speak Igbira Koto and frequently intermarry with them. If these Oworo were to migrate elsewhere and maintain their self-identification as Oworo, others—like Igbira Koto—might claim them as kin, even though historically, they are distinct.

Another instance is the Benu people in Niger State. They officially identify as Nupe, having migrated from Borno State and lost their original language over time. Though Nupe people accept them as part of their group, everyone knows their historical roots lie elsewhere.

Rumors about tribal identity often contain an element of truth. For example, the Ikwerre people have been said not to be Igbo. There may be truth in such claims: some historians and oral traditions trace Ikwerre ancestry back to migrations from the ancient Benin Kingdom rather than Igbo land, even though cultural proximity and shared boundaries with the Igbo exist. Language alone is never a perfect indicator of origin; Oworo and Benu cases show how identity can transform after migration. Similarly, if Ikwerre people’s origins seem unclear to you, respecting their own narrative and chosen identity is essential.

Ultimately, Ikwerre are Ikwerre—not Igbo—even if they share some historical connections or were settled near the Igbo. The key is recognizing that historic migrations, intermarriage, and language change don’t override people’s chosen self-identification. If a group’s ancestry includes both maternal Igbo and paternal Benin roots, adopting the maternal language doesn’t necessarily make them Igbos; identity is more complex than language alone.

Peace!
Brilliant insights.
