Car TalkRe: What Is And Why Vin? by KunleA2(m): 11:52am On Jul 25, 2009
VIN is located inside the engine firewall, corner dashboard area on the driver's side and the door post on the driver side. The below pics should help.

Anytime you wanna buy the car, you can post it here for check.

Car TalkRe: What Is And Why Vin? by KunleA2(m): 10:46pm On Jul 24, 2009
bimbor:
Guys permit me 2 ask this, I hear a lot about VIN in this section, I Know its an acronym for 'Vehicle Identification Number' but why do people always advise one to crosscheck it on a vehicle up 4 sale? I also like 2 know the meaning of 'Carfax report'. U guys shd pardon my ignorance, I'm only but a Doctor, i'm a kindergarten when it comes to Automobiles, so can someone shed some light on the issues above?
In the US, the VIN is used to record all activities on the car. Every time you go for registration, service, change of ownership etc. Also, more importantly when a car gets in an accident, it (99% of the time) will be recorded on the history (i.e VIN) of the car. The VIN is unique to each car. (i.e No two vehicles have the same VIN). The CARFAX report is the report that details all these info.

So for example, if a car went for registration, it might be recorded to have 90,000 miles on it already driven. So it SOMETIMES  wink happen to see the same car showing only 31,000 miles on it after it gets to Nigeria  wink. So you add 1+1 you can know that its been rolled back. Only a CARFAX report will let you know that.

Like i mentioned, it can also show you that the car has been involved in an accident. You can still buy the car, but you wanna inspect it properly and make sure you bid on the car accordingly. Accidented cars (also called salvaged) SHOULD under normal circumstances be cheaper than non-accidented ones.

Some cars also have been in flood areas (Katrina etc). The CARFAX can also tell you if the car has been reported as water damaged or registered in a flood zone. You wanna run away from those!

In you line of work (Im assuming you are a medical Doctor). A CARFAX will be similar to a patient's medical history/chart. It details prior ailment/treatment, allergies, etc) You will always ask the patients of these things to "diagnose" them when they come in.

Always check a CARFAX report on a car before you buy it. It at least gives u an idea of the car's history.

Remember all these aformentioned are only for US cars. I don't know anything about European system.

Let me know if you have any further question(s)
AutosRe: Cost Of Car Shipment To Nigeria? by KunleA2(m): 10:23pm On Jul 24, 2009
AMERICANEX:
How long it takes to get a vehicle to Lagos depends basically on the steamship line that you use.

Example - for Ro/Ro : check what the last day to drop off the vehicle in Baltimore Maryland is for making the sailing of a targeted vessel. Right now both ACL and Hoegh have vessles coming through about every 2 weeks. So even if you miss the first one - You WILL ride on the second one provided you have no problems with US customs and your paperwork is in order. These vessels get the RO/RO cargo to Lagos in approx. 16 to 20 days on the water. ACL is the fastest and easiest to work with right now as they have no issues with congestion. It seems that ACL recognized their own need for owning their own property to off load at. So they have no delays upon arrrival. This is important to know when sailing into peak season (October through January).

For Containers the same hold true the below each have a sailing once a week :
Maersk 35 days on the water (to Tin Can)
ZIM 45 days on the water
Delmas 35 days on the water
MSC 30-35 days on the water
all use the public terminal in Lagos - which is always subjetc to congestion issues. so be careful with your timing.
Currently - ZIM is the cheapest and because of the difficult exchange rate issues - many are chossing them.
ACL is sailing only once a month to Tin Can - but they are the fastest on the water and have no congestion * but they are also the priciest right now.

Be careful how you pick your poison - be certain that you are using a freight shipping company from the USA that will tell you the truth not just tell you what you want to hear.

Respectfully,

Anyone with this info: is it possible for a 2WD jeep to be converted to 4WD. How much will it cost. can anyone help out.
huh Why?

Technically its possible. But the cost will be so outrageous if it has to be done right. Not to mention the fact that you might not get it done properly. Well what you have. Buy a new 4wD if its so important to you.
AutosRe: Uniform Custom Duty On Imported Vehicles by KunleA2(m): 12:46pm On Jul 23, 2009
reality4us:
I trust my Naija guys. Just buy 5 year old car at 10000 USD but let the invoice bear that it costs 2000 USD. The 50% customs duty will then be 1000 USD. Who then loses, federal government as usual.
They actually apply fair mkt value when they value the import duty. Regardless of how much you buy it. There is a uniform "blue book value" for car prices here in the US. undecided

na wa for u oga promise,

ac suppose dey, as for the "soul" as usual i no get am, but i fit go oganise am for u, special request,

quick question: do they have this model in the u.s? because i tried to search for this on ebay just to have an idea of what a toks would cost but unfortunately dint find any there.
No Middleman. What we have here is Tacoma. No Hilux here. (Hilux was imported to the US last in the 70's). However its same thing pretty much. They just call them Tacoma here.

Also, we dont have diesel here. I love those diesel engines grin walahi. Another thing is that the Tacomas here with double cabin are high off the ground (Almost looking like a 4Runner height). They are not the small pickups like this one.

We only have "regular cabin" or "Extra cab" (They call those one and half in naija) . See pics below.

AutosRe: A Suggestion For Carfax Checkers by KunleA2(m): 2:46am On Jul 23, 2009
BizBooks:
When posting Carfax reports for NLanders, post the relevant sections. Some people post everything that appear on the website. If you look at those reports, you will see that they contain a lot of boiler-plate information that comes with every carfax report.

While it is easy to just copy and past everything on the carfax website, it will be beneficial to take a few seconds and post the important  parts. In my opinion, these are the sections that need to be posted:

1. Vehicle Information (the section at the top of the page)
2. Details

Every other thing on the page are either advertisements or explanation of different automobile terms that may have nothing to do with the car being looked up.
Your point well understood. However, since thousands of people read this forum, have you ever stopped to think that those info you regarded as "irrelevant" is useful to someone else? Or does it have to be just 'bou you?  wink

Also, its much easier to "select all" or export out all the info than trying to cut and paste certain info. Someone with a bad history car might turn around and claim that something was added or left out of the car's history  undecided

Its free. Quit nick-picking. The ones posting are not complaining. Read what matters to you and leave the rest to others.  undecided

No disrespect.

Connoisseur:
Can Dangote be broke when he donated almost a billion naira last week on our first lady s cancer fund raising.
Quite possible. When rich people "donate". Its not usually raw cash. Its mostly in terms of equipment and usually they will spread the donation over a period of term. Its not just one time check like that.

Whether he's broke or not, Nigerians need to realise that no country can import its way to prosperity. YOU NEED TO PRODUCE/MANUFACTURE!. Bulk of his wealth has been from importing. I am not saying he's not manufacturing but about 60-70% comes from straight importing.

Hence its easy to get short term loan and turn it around quickly. Manufacturing is difficult. Day in , Day Out. Make products, Make profit. Sustain that and do it all over again. Thats difficult. Thats why Nigerians dont manufacture much. Power issues doesnt help either.

The monopoly has also helped him, take that away and you have a problem. The last time i was in Nigeria, i was appalled by the quality of his salt huh. Its TERRIBLE!!!. There's no way that can even be an iodized salt. If you are going to monopolize, at least bring the good stuff.

Only time will tell. All i can say is, NO ONE LEAVES A COMPANY WHEN ALL IS IN ORDER!. The mass exodus of his top guys kinda baffles me. They know something you and i dont. wink

Its a very nice car. Conversion in Nigeria is what the owner have to be careful about. Too many half-baked mechanics out there who will claim they know what there are doing but don't. References should be checked before handing this car for conversion. Its a great car nonetheless. Happy sales!
