DaGC: I keep telling people that any government official slashing his/her official salary is just trying to look sympathetic to Nigerians and in turn get popularity.
The salaries have never been the problem. Allowances, that's the sh*t right there. If they slash salaries, it will affect their allowances because the allowances are multiples (x2, x3, x4) of their salaries. If the salary slash is big enough, it will reflect effectively on their allowances but if the slash is minimal, the effect on their allowances will also be minimal. |

PabloAfricanus: Not just Awo, but Ayida and all the civil service and foreign service crew still cringing from the cold blooded murders of January 1966. Awo with the benefit of hindsight was relatively naive and a bit blinded by his unapologetic tribal politics. The Igbos were more than willing to have a working relationship with the Yorubas...as most of the Igbo nationalist leaders had Yoruba leanings, spoke Yoruba or lived and schooled in then Western Region. I think the Yoruba leaders generally did not like the domineering and pushy attitudes of the Igbos. The Igbos undoing was their lack of political and diplomatic experience...plus not factoring in London's response to the deaths of Ahmadu Bello, Tafawa Balewa and the rest. If Awo had chosen the path of secession, there was nothing stopping the Westerners from forcing the remaining Northern soldiers out of their region. By the time of the Aburi meetings, majority of soldiers in the divisions had been relocated to their various regions. It was an opportunity passed on. The then Western region would have been had a chance of being a model of an organized African country.
Gowon was used, Awo was used both by the British and the Fulanis and they never realized it. They were rather tolerated by the oligarchs. As I have commented earlier, the Yorubas played a game of convenience...it was what it was. But the real masterminds were not even Fulanis or Yorubas...the stakeholders were the old colonialists in London. Nigeria was likely their checkmate to any oil production instability in the Arabian gulf and elsewhere they had planted puppet rulers. Even the Soviets and France had to back down on Biafran support when they realized what the game was all about.
The British had decided that only the Hausa/Fulani sufficiently had the political, cultural and military experience to secure their investments in their former colony. The Igbos proved too smart and headstrong to play "civilized" politics with. The Yorubas typically thrived in chaos and educated tribalism...not enough to handle international politics. The other minorities were just not visible enough.
The only anti-dote to the Fulani (not Hausa/Fulani as some suppose) hegemony while Nigerian remains a nation is the Orkar formula. Or a complete dismantling of Ironsi's unitary style of govt and a return to the former regions. Unfortunately the strategic positioning of allies across all ethnic groups by the Fulani would have to be broken first.
My not necessarily correct opinion. The British formulated the political equation for Nigeria. You re right on that point and once the northerners understood the equation, they capitalized on it. They are always united most of the time especially when political decisions are to be made. Just imagine, a combination of north plus SS/SE against SW or north plus SW against SS/SE will produce a wide margin. On the other hand, a combination of SW plus SS/SE against the north will produce a small margin if any. It's just the way the equation was formulated but unfortunately, many of us don't really understand this and those who do, seek their self preservation. The British really gave the typical northerner good orientation. I have always noticed that the average northerner who hawks pineapple, rides Okada, sells sweets and biscuits, or even sells water in 25 litre jerry cans have a pocket radio tuned to BBC, VOA and other world class stations. They have been oriented to appreciate world class information and it is being delivered to them in their mothertongue giving them a sense of self worth and superiority. When will BBC transmit in Yoruba or Igbo language? When will the typical Emeka/Nkechi and Tunde/Bola be more interested in good information instead of lewd music and half naked dancers? |

soe: No need
Buhari should know that Tinubu means well for the party...it is like a pet project to him.
The reason PDP so much wants his downfall is cos they know that a strong tinubu will remain a nightmare to PDP.
Buhari shoukd learn from his 1985 coup that acting "mr nice" doesn't work in Nigeria.
That was how David Mark, Sambi Dasuki and 2 other officers "nicely" walked into his state house, sat down, ate dinner with him, watched the 9pm news with him, laughed out loud before bringing out the pistol to send him on house arrest.
Saraki is patting him on the back while slowly rubbing the power off him...and Tinubu has nothing much to lose.
Wise up Buhari. Wise up Same Sambo Dasuki and David Mark are still loitering around him today. |

Utchman1: I read every single word.
It is no wonder Nigeria is the way it is. It did not start today.
It is our Nigerian way of doing things. Okonjo-Iweala cannot try this at world bank where she works; there is no way she will not attend scheduled meetings. Imagine making verbal financial statements for a gathering of governors and legislatures.
But coming to think of it, why has Adams left it this late?
It just goes to confirm further that Nigeria was in autopilot under Jonathan. I read everything too. However, I expected this write-up to have come out before now. If all governors had demanded for a breakdown of the ECA and SWF before now with one voice, the baseline for the incoming govt may have been defined before now. The write-up is an eye opener. I'm waiting for NOI's response and I'm gonna read every word too. |

This woman lost the respect i got for her during OBJ's administration... She just ridiculed and tarnished her image under this clueless administration... It's because OBJ had a better understanding of governance than GEJ so he was able to keep her on her toes. Remember that immediately she began to misbehave, OBJ 'relegated' her to another ministry and she resigned. If GEJ really had a clearer understanding of our economy, he would have let go of her a long time ago. |
