Tolatutu:Hypocrite Jonathan sidelines Yoruba in key appointments -Akande OCTOBER 15, 2014 BY SAMUEL AWOYINFA, ABEOKUTA A national leader and former chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Bisi Akande, has said President Goodluck Jonathan is marginalising the Yoruba in all constitutional appointments in the country. He also pointed out that the president had not hidden his disdain for Yoruba leaders, who have any views contrary to his own. Akande said this on Wednesday at the inaugural lecture of the Dauda Adegbenro Foundation, in honour of the late Chief Dauda Adegbenro, a former Premier of the Western Region, in Abeokuta. Akande, who was the chairman on the occasion, in his speech titled, ‘Adegbenro fought against impunity’, noted that no administration had disrespected the Yoruba nation like Jonathan’s. Unlike the late politician and statesman, Akande noted that the current administration at the centre promoted impunity and imposed unwanted leaders on the people. Tracing the history of imposition of unwanted leaders on the people by the Federal Government to early 60s, which he said led to the ‘Operation We tie‘ crisis in the Western Region, Akande said the nation needed politicians in the mould of Adegbenro to fight the emerging impunity in governance. He said, “We are back in similar era of using the regime of impunity in Jonathan’s Federal Government to impose unwanted individuals as leaders in each of the states of Yoruba land. “It will not be an overstatement to say therefore, that we now require many more Dauda Adegbenros to lead Yoruba’s protest against Jonathan’s regime’s impunity once again in Yorubaland.” “Apart from marginalising the Yoruba in all constitutional appointments of his government, Jonathan’s trait has always been to persecute the Yoruba leaders, whom he perceived to have contrary views to his own.” |

How Did President Jonathan Resolve The Ogoni Declaration Of Independent Ogoni Declares "Self-Government" “We are acting with legitimacy to reclaim all of our rights, without exception,” says Goodluck Diigbo. Jubilations are continuing throughout Ogoniland after the Ogoni people in southern Nigeria, today, Thursday, 2nd of August declared political autonomy. In a live broadcast on a newly established radio station: Voice of Ogoni, MOSOP President/Spokesman, Dr. Goodluck Diigbo vowed that:“By this declaration of political autonomy, we, the Ogoni people are determined to enforce the United Nations Declaration on Rights of Indigenous Peoples, without fear or retreat,” Diigbo said. Diigbo affirmed that self-government within Nigeria will secure for the Ogoni people, their indigenous rights, enable them to meet their needs and interests and finally end internal colonialism. Diigbo said self-government became urgent recognizing the need to arrive at a consensus to collectively review the disputed UNEP Ogoniland Oil Assessment report, because any dialogue must be with the genuinely elected representatives of the people expected to enforce indigenous rights without dictation. In the broadcast, Diigbo further underscored the reason for the urgency of self-government for Ogoni: “Concerned that in the absence of a responsive government that the indigenous people of Ogoni will continue to suffer from historic injustices.” Diigbo stated: “In order to make indigenous rights practicable in Ogoni, we have through a very transparent electoral college process, beginning with community by community elections, set up 272 village councils, while the village councils in turn elected representatives for 33 district councils and the district representatives went on to elect representatives to serve at the center as custodians of customs and traditions, otherwise called lawmakers.” “The law makers in turn elected the executive arm of the Ogoni Central Indigenous Authority (OCIA) with checks and balances inbuilt to ensure corruption-free, effective, efficient and answerable system of grassroots self-government instead of the old, corrupt and mismanaged local government system endured by the Ogoni for decades,” Diigbo explained. “In taking these measures, we are quite aware of the discomfort to about 56 local politicians that control local government politics in Ogoni, however, we care more about the 1.2 million people that have for too long been excluded,” he stated. He announced that a Transitional Committee was already set up to facilitate dialogue to ensure peaceful transition, within 30 days, while consultation with the national government and international community begins without delay. Diigbo emphasized the need for Ogonis to remain law-abiding and act nonviolently; saying “we are acting with legitimacy to reclaim all of our rights, without exception, and for the sake of peace and security; let no one test the collective will of the Ogoni people, because we will not surrender our indigenous rights anymore.” Excerpts: In 1990, we the people of Ogoni presented the Ogoni Bill of Rights to the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in which the Ogoni nonviolently demanded among other indigenous rights: · Political autonomy to participate in the affairs of the Republic as a distinct and separate indigenous unit (by whatever name called), provided that this autonomy guarantees political control of Ogoni affairs by Ogoni people; The right to control and use a fair proportion of Ogoni economic resources for Ogoni development; adequate representations, as of right, in all Nigerian national institutions, and the right to protect the Ogoni environment and ecology from further degradation as recognized under international law to which Nigeria is obligated. Nigeria, a multi-ethnic nation state, a legacy of the British colonial administration, granted political independence October 1, 1960, after the British violated Ogoni independence in 1901, did not respond to the Ogoni, inhabiting their ancestral land in southern Nigeria. When in the struggle for indigenous political autonomy; especially, in matters concerning confiscation of sacred ancestral lands for oil production without prior informed consent, there comes a moment to assert powers derived from the consent of the people and Nature’s blessings in order to protect, preserve and pass on inherited sacred ancestral heritage to succeeding indigenous generations. On behalf of the entire Ogoni people, I am highly honored to present these issues surrounding the proposed Ogoni Declaration of Political Autonomy. Part of Full Text 30. That despite the fact that the “Nigerian Constitution” and other laws and policies provide for a local government system, in reality, the local government constitutional provisions meant to extend the principle of Federalism to its logical conclusion, by bringing the government to the grassroots level, do not apply in Ogoniland as a result of corruption and public deception by local and state political actors and the lack of enforcement of the shaky “Nigerian constitution” by the federal government; 31. That, this is because quite often local governments are frequently dissolved in Ogoniland without any explanation rendered to the Ogoni people; 32. That, essential appointments into local government service are often suspended for several years without information to the Ogoni people about the reason for such suspension, when the local authorities still operate budgetary provisions for needed manpower; 33. That the elected representatives who have supported this proposed declaration of political autonomy for the Ogoni people as they have bitterly complained that the present system of local government in Nigeria does not allow them the freedom to govern according to the wishes of the people; 34. That individual local government chairman has to remit monthly allowances in substantial amounts to those politicians at the state and national levels that put them into office; 35. That since local government operators are often imposed on the people, they, the local operators are required to compensate for the way they are often put into office through massive and violent rigging of elections; 36. That in the circumstance, the local operators, expected to respond to yearnings of their grassroots constituencies have become perpetually vulnerable to threats of illegal removal from office without reference to the electorate; 37. That, we the Ogoni people take very serious, the complaint by the Ogoni local officials that have confessed that they still hold office because they are able to settle their political godfathers, meaning political stalwarts that planted them as conduit pipe for siphoning funds meant to help in the development of Ogoni villages and wellbeing of Ogonis; 38. That the application indigenous rights will end this manner of abuse of power and mismanagement of public resources as the representatives of the people have been duly elected by the people in Ogoni, and controlled by the people and to end the system whereby politicians handpicked by political operators at the national and state levels, remain in office without accountability to the people as long as they satisfy those who put them into office. 39. That the local government employees, some in service for over 30 years cannot even afford a good meal with their families, but have seen politicians that come into the local councils buying houses in Port Harcourt and Abuja, even in overseas countries within six months in office. 40. That we believe that the Ogoni people are equal to all other Nigerians that now lord it over the Ogoni by means of indirect internal colonial rule through the corrupt local government system, which violates indigenous rights of the Ogoni people. Concluding Declaration: “Now, therefore, acting on the General Assembly mandate on the questions relating to the Political Autonomy of Ogoni in southern Nigeria, and in the spirit of the General Assembly motion DPA/001/2012, and its resolutions DPA/002/2012 and DPA/003/2012 adopted and approved on July 31, 2012; in accordance with the wishes of the Ogoni people contained in the Ogoni Bill of Rights of 26 August, 1990 as revised on the 26th of August 1991; expressing the collective will of the good people of Ogoni in the referendum of 2010 and the second referendum of 2011, obeying the command by the Ogoni people and their elected representatives from 33 district councils, comprising over 272 village councils, living in the six kingdoms of Ogoni, namely: Babbe, Eleme, Gokana, Kenkhana, Nyokhana and Tai and two administrative units: Ban Goi and the Bori National Territory; conducting this solemn affair in accordance with the United Nations Declaration on Rights of Indigenous Peoples adopted by United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 13, 2007, guided by the purposes and principles of international law in accordance with the United Nations Charter, I, Dr. Goodluck Diigbo, hereby make this historic statement, to announce the proclamation of this General Assembly Declaration of Political Autonomy for the Self-determination or Self-government of the Ogoni people within Nigeria, today, the 2nd Day of August, 2012. Contrary to what Passingshot and most APC Psycophants want Nairalanders to believe, here are real premises meant to put responsibilities squarely on the culpable and appropriate judgment placed on the perpetrators of crimes done against the Nigerian State for the pass 16 years if convicted. I am here to argue the point that: PDP is not Exclusively Responsible for whatever perceived rot in Nigeria at the present. APC should wake-up to their responsibilities hence it is illogical to place all the infractions of the last 16 years on the entity called PDP that have no capacity to serve prison terms for criminal offenses when its members have disembarked. 1. Nigeria is not ruined taken the perspective from what and where we were before 1999. A thing can only be ruined if it goes from bad to worse and never by moving forward no matter how sluggish. Looking at Nigeria's political and socioeconomic welfare and judging by the standard of living pre 29th May, 2015 to our near attainment of millennium development goals compared to pre 1999 under Military Governments, Nigeria has made giant strides not minding how sluggish or the rate anyone wish to tag the flow but nonetheless it hasn't been in the negative. 2. Is PDP responsible for the present state of Nigeria downturn under Buhari? The answer is certainly no. Many world leaders have inherited an Economy in deep mess far worst than what APC will like you to believe Nigeria is presently engrossed in which include failing monetary policies, loss of employment, near collapse of our capital market among other occasioned by loss of momentum gained after peaceful handover of power during which APC had the opportunity to leverage on what the fall in oil prices brought us into but the party mismanaged the golden opportunity to key into the international sympathy by foot dragging and badmouthing the very country it promised Nigerians to turn into paradise should they be voted into power. Rather than plan on how to hit the ground running, it took five months to settle power sharing formula within their party and gave no indication of their readiness to key into the goodwill General Buhari received both pre and post-inauguration. Secondly, Nigeria doesn't run a surplus budget rather we are meant to spend every estimable dine gotten in any fiscal year including the use of supplementary budget to clear any excess income gotten in a calendar year hence APC chieftains have argued in the past that excess crude account is unconstitutional hence it is illogical to expect Nigeria to save for raining days. Judging by the doctrine of responsibility for which businesses and stakeholders take responsibility for wrong done within their domain, care and operations? The only responsibility and penalty the entity called PDP deserved in these blame games under discussion is only "being voted out of power by the electorates" while every other alleged infringement, abuse of power, corruption, executive recklessness and negligence of duty are crimes punishable by law on individuals who engaged directly or otherwise on the aforementioned lawlessness/crimes. Having established the above premise, it now leads us (Nigerians) to beam the light of responsibility on these people who are culpable notwithstanding their present party affiliation or god fathers/sons. Thirdly, judging by the composition of the present day APC for which is composed with not less than 75% of past PDP Stewart, we are therefore compelled to put the responsibility of whatever lapses and mismanagement if any during the PDP's 16 years administration on these wayfaring politicians who hold sway at one time or the other noting that PDP was both the ruling party and a veritable opposition in itself as notable during our periods of democratic experimentation. Let no one deceive you into letting those Hypocrites who moved into APC to regain power because they lost their inclusiveness in reaping us off our common patrimony. Others looted their States to match the so-called corrupt PDPians dollar for dollars thereby helping the people's General get to the presidency hence denting his integrity and making a mockery of the selective war on corruption so-far though nonetheless commendable. https:///elNOM4MnXJ A mother doesn't become childless because of divorce. It is quite unfortunate for APC and their supporters especially Tinubu's Psycophants to label a group of people thieves just because you detest them and envy the kind of crowd the person they detest pulls. This same people that will go extra mile to give their support for Fashola, Amaechi, Fayemi etal by telling whoever care to question their integrity to prove their case in court. It's becoming clear by the day that Nigeria collapse will be imminent not because of inefficiency of APC administration but by blind and unimaginable degree of sycophantic hypocrisy of their evil hearted supporters |
IbnSultaan:There wasn't any time Obasanjo blamed the military for Nigeria's woes. Remember, Obasanjo (military deputy/head of State -1975 - 1979) never blamed himself nor his comrades during for his 8 years as PDP President hence where is the blame game? Yardua never blamed Obasanjo nor did Jonathan blame Yar'dua hence where is the previous blame game? APC should stop deceiving Nigerians, it's already six months into APC administration and APC is still playing opposition propaganda. |
PDP was actually a pro-democracy group against perpetual military rule that was hijacked by Military Establishment through the back door. PDP was everything about Nigeria ruling class and their desire for a departure from autocracy which ideology at a time was a popular opinion. The PDP Politicians that lost their struggle for power metamorphosed to the opposition in PDP which was a component backbone for an alternative to grab power back hence the APC. Ask OBJ, Atiku, El'rufai etal for clarification. Even Edwin Clarke and Bamanga Turkur can attest to this. |
PDP was both the ruling party and the opposition at the same time hence your logic about Party manifesto is rubbish. |
IbnSultaan:See childishness. You mean Obasanjo (military deputy/head of State -1975 - 1979) was blaming himself for the rot in his 8years as PDP President? |

Second batch Staff ABIA State Government Friday commenced disbursing the N14.152 bailout fund to clear the arrears of salary owed workers in the State. https://www.onevoteforokezie.com/wp-content/themes/onevoteforokezieikpeazu/images/slides/1.png The total debt so far captured by the Committee constituted by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to handle the disbursement of the fund as at its last week’s sitting was about N7.1 billion according to the state chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC Comrade Uchenna Obigwe. Ministries and Parastatals so far captured by the Committee include Health Management Board, whose workers are owed seven months arrears and Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba, being owed about nine months arrears. Others were Primary School Teachers owed three months, Local Government workers owed two months, Local Government Pensions said to be owed two months and MDAs whose arrears range between one to two months. According to Obigwe, who is a member of the committee, the money for the payment of Local Government workers has been paid to the Joints Accounts Committee with instructions for the opening of a Local Government Bailout Account where the money would transferred and disbursed the workers to ensure transparency. The NLC chairman said that workers in the sectors so far captured would begin to receive bank payment alerts from this week, and urged the workers to be patient assuring that everything was being done to ensure that the disbursement is smooth. “So far, Local Government staff who are being owed 2 months arrears, money has been made available to the Joint Accounts Committee, JAC, with a directive to the Councils to open separate Local Government Bailout accounts where the money would be transferred to and disbursed to individual workers. The payment was for July and August. “Primary School teachers were paid for three months, June, July and August. September has already been taken care of by normal allocation. Local Government pensioners were paid July and August. “Health Management Board workers were paid seven months, ABSUTH workers were paid nine months while the case of parastatals on subvention such as Abia State University and Abia State Polytechnic would be discussed on Tuesday [tomorrow]”, Obigwe explained. However, the NLC Chairman also explained that the payments were exclusion of leave allowances, promotion arrears, arrears of minimum wage, CONHESS for health workers and arrears overtime. He further explained that the case of arrears of State Pensioners would be handled in subsequent sitting of the Bailout Committee. “Labour is happy with Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for keeping to his words not to tamper with the bailout funds because it would have given room for friction between Labour and Government. “Labour appreciates the transparent nature of the disbursement and will like other issues that involve workers to be handled the same manner. As the disbursement continues, we assure Abia workers the Government will not shortchange them and the leadership of Labour will not betray them. “Labour in Abia will continue to negotiate with Government on possibility of setting aside some money monthly to address the issue of gratuity, and after the bailout appropriation on arrears of workers salary, if any money remains, the committee will look inwards to see what it can carry for gratuity”, the NLC chairman said. http://dailytimes.com.ng/abia-govt-commences-distribution-bailout-fund/ |
