A Pakistan politician who won a seat in last week's controversial national elections has given it up because he says the vote was rigged in his favour. Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman of the Jamaat-e-Islami party had been named the victor of the provincial assembly seat PS-129 in the city of Karachi. But this week he claimed the candidate backed by Imran Khan's PTI party had secured far more votes and that their tally had been reduced. As such, he would relinquish the seat. "If anyone wants to make us win in an illegitimate manner, we will not be accepting that," Mr Rehman said at a press conference held by his party on Monday. He added: "Public opinion should be respected, let the winner win, let the loser lose, no one should get anything extra." He said that while he had received more than 26,000 votes, the independent candidate Saif Bari, backed by the PTI, had received 31,000 votes - but these were presented as 11,000 votes. Pakistani electoral authorities have denied the allegations. It is unclear who will take up the PS-129 seat now. But the incident is just the latest highlighting the crisis around Pakistan's elections held last Thursday, which have been marred by allegations of widespread vote fraud and interference, which were said to have damaged candidates affiliated with Khan. The former prime minister has been in jail since last August and his party was disqualified from the ballot, meaning that PTI candidates had to run as independents. But despite these hurdles, voters overwhelmingly turned out across the country to cast votes in favour of his cause. Independent candidates - a majority affiliated with the PTI - won 93 of the 265 National Assembly seats that were contested, the largest of any single party. However, the PTI argues such candidates should have won even more votes and more seats. They have alleged numerous instances of vote rigging, and welcomed the Islamist party's relinquishing of the Karachi seat this week. Despite the PTI's success in the popular vote, Khan's rival parties - Nawaz Sharif's PML-N and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's PPP - earlier this week said they had reached a deal to form a government. In last week's vote, the PML-N won 75 seats while the PPP came third with 54 seats. They have also reached an agreement to form a coalition with several smaller parties such as the MQM. In addition, parties will be allocated more seats from the 70 reserved for women and non-Muslims. These additional seats are not available to independent candidates. This means they will easily reach the required 169 seats needed to form a government. PML-N and PPP were previously in a coalition that ousted Khan from power in 2022. Mr Sharif's brother Shehbaz took over at that time as prime minister; he is being presented again as the likely next leader of Pakistan. Khan was ousted as prime minister in a parliamentary vote of no confidence, after which several criminal charges were laid against him. He was jailed for 14 years on various charges a week before the election, with several prison sentences to run concurrently. The 71-year-old has said the legal cases against him were fabricated and part of a wider political witch-hunt. Pakistan's caretaker government has denied these allegations. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-68302678 |

Mr. Babatunde Irukere, the ED of FCCPC said last year the reason they have not tracked the loan shark because they have no known address okay now that you have registered, them and you have their details and address what excuses will you give again Sir, No known addresses In a report, Babatunde Irukere, the ED of FCCPC, once noted that the challenges of tracking down these companies are due to the fact that they have no known addresses and as such operate in a clandestine manner. Some of the agents who spoke to us are willing to give the location of a few of these agencies that we will publish in the second part of this story. https://allafrica.com/stories/202207140051.html |
If the government officals have no investment on this loan shark app why have they not prosecute them for violting the laws of nigeria Owners of the company My discussion with a few recovery agents of these companies told me that their supervisors are Chinese. In fact, I was told by one agent that these companies are Chinese owned and the difference between them and the professionally run loan companies could be seen. My most shocking encounter was when one agent told me that these Chinese have government collaborators. The agent informed me about one that was recently closed down by FCCPC, but are today still functioning and are back in operation. Collaborators Some fintech companies are one of the biggest collaborators according to my findings. They assist these companies in sending payments and receiving payments https://allafrica.com/stories/202207140051.html |
The Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Babatunde Irukera claimed that he have registered 180 loan company why did he keep on threatening them without taking actions. It's either he is incompetent or there is something he is not telling Nigerians. Are the loan sharks above the loan. Why are they violating the law of the country without any single action from the government, only threats. Most of this loan shark charge 45% To 50% interest in 6 to 7 days that means if you take 50000 naira loan you will pay 75000 naira in 6 to 7 days what kind of business will you do in 6 to 7 days to make the money The government are not telling Nigerians the truth, the reason they have not prosecuted any of this loan shark. |
Meanwhile, in Ghana a joint operation by the Bank of Ghana, Cybersecurity Authority, Economic and Organized Crime Office and the Data Protection Agency led to the arrests of over 420 illegal loan app operators recently. This comes just about a month after the Bank of Ghana put out a list of 97 of such illegal loan apps and warned the public to desist from dealing with them. Indeed, several of them are listed on the Google Play Store and quite a number of them use both Ghana and Nigeria phone numbers, indicating that they may have their head offices in Nigeria. Their modus operandi is not different from how they operate in Nigeria. They pry into customers’ privacy and embarrass them to everyone in their contact list and also threat to leak private pictures because at sign on, customers give access to everything on their phones without realizing it. Following the mass arrests in Ghana, it is now time for regulators in Ghana to collaborate with Google to delist these apps from the Google Play Store. |
If the activities of the loan app providers have been found to constitute a breach of the country’s data protection law. Why have the government not prosecute them, are they above the law? Data protection concern The activities of the loan app providers have also been found to constitute a breach of the country’s data protection law. According to the National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, many digital lenders in the country have been reported for breaches and are currently under investigation. Section 35 of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, which was recently signed into law by President TInubu, states that a data subject (individuals whose data are being exploited) has the right to obtain from a data controller, without constraint or unreasonable delay confirmation as to whether or not the data controller, or a data processor operating on its behalf, is storing or otherwise processing personal data relating to the data subject, and where that is the case the subject has the right to know The purposes of the processing; the categories of personal data concerned; the recipients or categories of recipients to whom the personal data have been or will be disclosed in particular, recipients in third countries or international organizations…” None of these is being complied with by the loan app providers as of now. |
The government are the one to be blame, they are only threatening the criminal loan app without taking actions. If the government has dealt with one or two criminal loan apps by now, they would have to stop invading people privacy. But the criminal loan app have found out that the government are only making noise. Google said on March that loan app will stop having access to people contact and photo, but the criminal loan app still access it |
Good one from Afenifere |
Well said. |
Only visa ban is not enough, they should make sure they deport their children back to Nigeria. |
Because clearly you're not getting it - Lagos is not "Yoruba FCT." Lagos actually has its own indigenous population. Both you and Kate are 1st or 2nd or 3rd generation immigrants in Lagos, my dear. Having a tangential ethnic relationship with the indigenes doesn't make you one! |

Umahi speaks for yourself we want Biafra but not the type that we can't have a say . or rule by a supreme leader that believes that his order is final. |
Ipob will soon lose all their support. Ipob leaders are brainless they don't listen to advice just like their leader Nnamdi kanu. |
Nnamdi Kanu and Ipob leaders started misbehaving when they see the support Igbo people were giving them. Nnamdi Kanu started seeing himself as God. that without him nothing like Biafra. It's a pity that all Ipob leaders have no brain. they are arrogant just like their leader Nnamdi Kanu. they don't listen to wise advice. there have been a lot of accusations against Ipob killing people even though we know that most of the accusations are false just to give ipob a bad name so Igbos will hate them. Instead of brainless Ipob leaders to suspend any form of sit at home for now instead they have declared again sit at home on 1st of October. this has shown that Ipob leaders are not different from Nigerian politicians. The time will come when Igbos will turn against Ipob. i was expecting them to change some of their ways but due to arrogance, they continue believing that nothing will happen. |
Nonsense Ipob abusing sit at home |
