The President of the Nigerian Senate, Ahmad Lawan says the National Assembly will continue to work with the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to find a lasting solution to the growing increase of insecurity across the country. Lawan made the pledge on Sunday in a statement issued by his media assistant, Ezrel Tabiowo, in Malumfashi, Katsina State at the constituency empowerment programme of Senator Bello Mandiya representing Funtua Senatorial District in the state. The Senate President who was reacting to bandits’ attacks on some villages in Katsina State condemned the latest attacks and also commiserated with the people in the affected areas over their loss. The lawmaker who said that constituency projects are badly misconstrued by many Nigerians added that the legislature would also ensure that government provides infrastructure across the country to make life meaningful for Nigerians. He said: “This (constituency project) is what we call the empowerment of the most ordinary Nigerians that otherwise wouldn’t have been remembered when you’re talking about the national budget. “But because members of the National Assembly are so close to the ordinary man, we try to look for those issues that make a difference in their individual and collective lives,” Lawan added. The development comes after President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday warned local communities in Katsina State that revenge killing by any group or individual following bandits’ attacks on some villages in Katsina State would not be accepted by the government. The President said in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said any revenge killing on the bandits would lead to orgy of violence. Buhari, who also condemned the latest attacks on farmers in Damkal and Tsanwa villages in Batsari local government area of the state, said killing of people in the name of revenge was not acceptable.

The Scio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, on Sunday gave the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government seven days ultimatum to disclose how it has spent the recovered loot from ex-military Head of State, Gen Sani Abacha. SERAP said Buhari-led government should “disclose within 7 days of the receipt and/or publication of our Freedom of Information requests the exact amount of public funds stolen by a former military head of state, Sani Abacha and details of spending of about $5 billion recovered loot since the return of democracy in 1999.” A statement signed and sent to newsmen by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare also asked the Federal Government to “disclose details of projects executed with the Abacha loot and their locations, details of companies and contractors involved in the execution of any such projects, details of all the agreements on the loot, the roles played by the World Bank and other actors, as well as the implementation status of all projects since 1999.” SERAP stated that it sent two Freedom of Information requests to Mrs Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning and Mr Abukabar Malami, SAN, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. “We are concerned that substantial part of the estimated $5 billion returned Abacha loot since 1999 may have been diverted, re-stolen or mismanaged, and in any case remain unaccounted for,” SERAP said. In the FoI requests dated 14 February 2020 and signed by SERAP deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization said: “Publishing the details of projects on which Abacha loot has been spent would allow the public to know the specific projects carried and the areas of the country in which the projects have been implemented as well as the officials that may be responsible for any alleged diversion or mismanagement of the loot.” SERAP urged the Federal Government to “Disclose the exact amounts stolen by Abacha, and the total amounts of the recovered loot and all agreements since the return of democracy in 1999; “Disclose details of the projects executed with the funds, locations of any such projects and the names of companies and contractors that carried out the projects; “Disclose details of specific roles played by the World Bank and other partners in the execution of any projects funded with Abacha loot since 1999; “Refer any allegations of corruption involving the execution of projects with Abacha loot to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for investigation; “Ensure that anyone involved in alleged corruption in projects executed with Abacha loot is brought to justice if there is relevant and sufficient admissible evidence “By Section 1 (1) of the Freedom of Information (FoI) Act 2011, SERAP is entitled as of right to request for or gain access to information, including information on the exact amount stolen and spending of returned Abacha loot and related details.”

He also said he needed the support of former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to succeed, calling on all supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to be magnanimous in victory. “I will be Governor of all, be it PDP, APC and others. We must remain united and ensure peace in our land,” he added. “That is the only time we can be talking of development. Let us work together.” Diri said he is willing to consider even members of the opposition parties for appointments. Douye Diri, the flagbearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in November’s governorship election in Bayelsa state, has asked members of the party who left the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC), to return. He stated this while speaking to reporters, in reaction to the Supreme Court’s ruling, which sacked David Lyon as the governor-elect. Diri is now expected to be sworn in as the Governor of Bayelsa. “The members of PDP, who out of one thing or the other got angry and left us to APC, I’m waving the olive branch, please, come back,” he said. “We have to build Bayelsa state together. I’m also calling on my brothers in APC they are Bayelsans, we cannot continue to be in disunity. “Being in APC does not remove you as my brother of Bayelsa state. Whether you are Nembe, Okpia, Sabama, or Southern Ijaw, that is the region that God has brought us together and so, I am extending my olive branch even to those of my brothers and sisters in APC,” he said. Lyon won the elections by polling 352,552 votes, while Diri got 143,172. However, the PDP and Diri had sought the disqualification of Lyon’s running mate, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, for allegedly falsifying his results. A panel of judges led by Mary Odili on Thursday, voided the joint ticket of Lyon and Degi-Eremienyo and set aside their participation in the governorship election. The apex court also ordered that INEC should issue a certificate of return to the candidate with the second-highest number of votes in the election. https://www.google.com/amp/s/dailypost.ng/2020/02/14/bayelsa-diri-sends-message-to-pdp-members-who-defected-to-apc/amp/

Head coach of the Nigerian senior national team, Gernot Rohr, has reacted to the appointment of former Super Eagles defender Joseph Yobo as the team’s Assistant coach. Rohr aimed a dig at the former Nigerian captain, saying that he heard Yobo has no coaching qualifications. The German gaffer said he was not informed of Yobo’s appointment before it was made. Speaking with BBC, Rohr said, “Joseph Yobo is welcome to the team, of course. I have heard that he has no coaching diplomas, so I will talk to him about this. “If what I have heard is correct, I will tell Yobo that he needs to do the training required, to grow as a coach. “The NFF has the right to pick one assistant coach for my staff, so they are the ones to communicate the reasons for the appointment, not myself. I was informed by Amaju Pinnick, in a telephone call, before it was made public. “I don’t know why Amapakabo has been removed. I worked very well with him. He did a very good job with me. “I regret his departure. But since the NFF have the right to take this decision, there is nothing I can do about it.” He said he would be more than happy to develop Joseph Yobo as well as other coaches in the country. Yobo has the record as one of the highest capped former Nigeria internationals and represented the country in different World Cups and African Nations Cups. |

The factional state Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Edo State, Joseph Osagiede, has accused the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole of undermining the power of the Oba of Benin. Osagiede said APC in the state do not have faction, saying that those who left the party went to form Edo Peoples Movement, EPM, and till date which remains an unregistered political association or social association that has no bearing with in the party. According to him, “I believe that the national chairman will also learn some lessons from what is going because His royal majesty, the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II to have led Benin Traditional Council to meet with the president on this matter. “Once the Oba has expressed a wish about anything it becomes a command to we that are Edo people. So, the Oba’s wish is to command that there should be peace in this political imbroglio and for Adams Oshiomhole to still be harbouring these descendants who led the captain and they are forming EPM and he is supporting them, he is working against the wish of the Oba. “You are all aware that recently the Oba also had a meeting with the Benin Traditional Council announced that we go into prayer and fasting to avert calamity this year, because of the political crisis that is on going. “Any wise man, any wise leader, any wise political chairman that knows that he is directly responsible for this crisis should take a cue from such statement by the Oba and come home meet with the governor and reconcile with him. We have always said that we are willing and ready for reconciliation but you see you can not be constituting a reconciliation body when you are an interested party in that issue.” He noted that the All Progressives Congress crisis is already ending because members of EPM are already folding up. On the issue of who and how will the name of the party candidate to the independent national electoral commission, INEC, he said the chairman does not have any constitutional power to submit names, you go through a process and that process is what we call the congresses. And if through the primaries any candidate emerges, it is that candidate name that will be submitted by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.
