seunmsg: The law is simply in operation. If he stole funds belonging to the good people of Lagos state, every kobo should be recovered from him. There should be no sacred cow in the fight against corruption. Which law? The same law that is blind when it comes to Kanu, Akpabio and other corrupt ex-governors but is wide awake, when it comes to Ambode? Here is another angle to the EFCC search on Ambode's residence. Some of the former governor’s loyalists accused the EFCC operatives of attempting to plant foreign currencies at his Epe home to incriminate him.
A statement signed by three lawyers said the anti-graft operatives had attempted to search Mr Ambode’s Epe home without supervision.
“We resisted as young lawyers and stated expressly that the principle of search is that the owner of the premises or his representatives must be present to observe the search,” read the statement jointly issued Fatai Adebanjo, Busari Olanrewaju, and Samson Okuneye.
“They succumbed to our superior argument and allowed us and the people who has the key to the ex-governor’s house into the apartment with them. Before they entered, we searched all the officials of the EFCC who intended to go in to effect the search.
“There was a blue bag which they were holding with them, we requested to see the content of the bag before they could take it in.
They got angry and said we cannot see the content. Having said that, we strongly resisted them to take it in since they cant allow us to see it, which they later agreed.
“We later got to know that the bag contained foreign currency which they brought to plant in the house of the ex-governor to incriminate him.
“It is important to inform the public that before the entered the house, we all submitted our phones to them as they requested, that the only person required to go in with phone is one of them who will record the whole process.”
The statement said no incriminating material was found in Mr Ambode’s home.
The EFCC said claims that its operatives attempted to incriminate Mr Ambode were untrue.
“The commission therefore frowns at the attempt to manipulate the video of the search, to create the wrong impression that officers of the agency molested residents at the Epe home of the governor.
“It is also not true that the search was an attempt to plant foreign currencies in the home of the former governor.” https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/347725-controversy-trails-efccs-search-of-ambodes-house.html/amp/ |

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) on Thursday, sealed a gas plant located at Gas line road in Magboro, Ogun, for allegedly operating illegally.
Mrs Muinat Bello-Zagi, the Operations Controller, Abeokuta Field Office, DPR,who led the team also apprehended three suspects with the help of the men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Bello-Zagi vowed that the owner of the plant and others running illegal gas plants in any part of the state would be arrested and prosecuted.
“If you look behind me, you’ll see a padlock.
“We had visited this facility twice and sealed it; we padlocked it but when we got here now, we noticed that he didn’t tamper with our padlock; rather, he created another entrance that was not there previously.
“That is why we are here again and we have sealed the place and going to prosecute him.
“We have said earlier that anyone caught operating illegally will be sanctioned and prosecuted and that is what we are going to do with this plant owner.’’
Meanwhile, the officials of the DPR met with the members of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) at the mosimi depot.
The DPR officials, led by Bello-Zagi, said that the meeting was aimed at affirming the relationship existing between the department and the petroleum marketers.
She urged the petroleum marketers to always adhere to the regulations guiding the sale of petroleum products in the country.
“IPMAN is one of our major stakeholders and we appreciate and respect them a lot. The purpose of the meeting today is to remind ourselves and remind them of some of our regulations.
“They have been complying but there is no perfect institution and there are some areas that need improvement and that is what we have discussed and they have promised to cooperate with us,” she said.
Responding, the Vice Chairman of IPMAN, Fatai Soewu, assured the DPR officials that the association would continue to appeal to its members to obey lay down rules and regulations.
Soewu, however, pleaded with the Federal Government to urgently address the issue of multiple- taxation which he said was affecting businesses of IPMAN members negatively..
He further urged the government to look into ways of having a unified taxation system.
Soewu also called on the the government to urgently repair the Ikorodu/Sagamu road leading the depot and ensure availability of petroleum products at the facility.

Deadlytruth: You have kept on repeating this stale line of "Ironsi never conducted any coup..." Who even told you this? A coup is any take over of power in such a manner which cricumvents the laid down constiutional provisions for that. Ironsi planned and executed a coup within a coup. What the constiution he swore to protect and preserve in all circumstances dictated for him to do at that moment was to simply swear in Alhaji Dipcharima as Balewa's replacement, also replace the slain premiers with their deputies, proceed to punish the coup plotters according to the military courtmatial laws of which he was the chief custodian, and returned to the barracks as a professional soldier who should show no interest in politics while still in office. But his greed for power and personal aggrandizement got the better part of him as he told the parliarmentarians to give him power and threatened them into unwilling submission by claiming that he would not be held responsible for whatever befell the country if political power was not surrendered to him. That itself was a coup. For a supposed chief security officer of the entire country to in advance deny responsibility for any security breach should he be denied power means he was up to a very dishonest game. And each time you claim Ironsi foiled the coup, you sound rather shallow and illogical for the following reason: Ifeajuna's coup was aimed at introducing military rule and subverting the independence constiution. Now Ironsi's action ended up producing exactly the same result. So how did that amount to foiling of the coup? An actual foiling of the coup should have resulted in preserving the democracy in place and returning power to the civilians without any alteration in the extant constiution. It is like Thief A robs you of your money and as he was on his way escaping with it, Thief B stops him and robs him too of the money and then ran away. Then you begin to commend Theif B for foiling Theif A's attempt to rob you despite he didn't return the money to you after robbing Thief A of it. Does that make sense? The members of parliament at that time expressed a view that was similar to your own. Kindly read the excerpt below: In his own words, Chief Richard Akinjide said the Ministers did not hand over to Ironsi. In 2000, he said ” under the law, that is, the interpretation Act, as acting President, Nwazor Orizu had all the powers of the President. The GOC said he wanted to see all the cabinet ministers. And so we assembled at the cabinet office. Well, I have read in many books saying that we handed over to the military.
We did not hand-over. Ironsi told us that” you either hand over as gentlemen or you hand-over by force”. Those were his words. Is that voluntary hand-over? So we did not hand over.
We wanted an Acting Prime Minister to be in place but Ironsi forced us, and I use the word advisedly, to hand over to him. He was controlling the soldiers.
The acting President, Nwafor Orizu, who did not cooperate with us, cooperated with the GOC. Dr. Orizu and the GOC prepared speeches which Nwafor Orizu broadcast handing over the government of the country to the army. I here state again categorically as a member of that cabinet, that we did not hand-over voluntarily. It was a coup”. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vanguardngr.com/2016/01/hand-over-or-took-over-power-2/amp/ |

Alot of people are like u who criticize these phones but haven't used them long enough to have a credible opinion Oga, speak for yourself. Which research do I want to do again? I bought Infinix Note 4, last year and used it for several months. Within the first 5 months of purchase, it started having charging port problems. I had to change the charging port. By the 7th month it developed another issue. I dumped the phone and bought another Infinix, only to be plagued with similar issues. This time, the 2nd one did not last as long as the 1st unit. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy I have been using for 3 years as my primary phone, never gave me any problems, till date. So should I lie and say that Infinix phones are good, when it has only ever given me problems? Even many of my friends have experienced similar disappointing issues with their own Infinix phones. Bottom line remains MTN evaded tax , People like Messi, Ronaldo and hosts of other world players are being tried and jailed / fined for tax evasion
In a bold move MTN forcefully and secretly repatriated funds without paying Nigerian Government , that alone is an affront and MTN should be sued or shutdown
if you do not comprehend any of that , then it's time to start looking into your so called education You are pained, because I questioned the gibberish your friend was posting. Eeyah....try not to kill yahself. Anyway, like I said to someone else earlier, I am not interested in the emptiness of those who constantly have nothing to contribute, but think they would be taken seriously, by the number of insults they spew out. Go back and read the article. MTN was said to have evaded import duties. MTN did not secretly and forcefully repatriate funds, as it is not possible to do so, without appropriate clearance from banking authorities. Ask any banker who is familiar with banking operations. Any money repatriated was their legitimate earnings made from their operations in the Nigerian market. Please go and educate yourself, before anyone calls your intelligence into question again.

Akainzo: Bros, cool down and read to actually understand business and not the telecomms equipment structures. Even though MTN is not the OEM for the telecomms equipment, it is actually MTN that imports them into the country. Siemens does not bring its equipment to keep on stores for buyers to come, the business that need them do the imports. The same operates in all other businesses. Toyota does not bring its cars to Nigeria, all Toyotas are IMPORTED by a particular business, either by an end user or a company in car retail business.
It is very much possible to import things into Nigeria and not pay the right import duties due to CORRUPTION. Even our own Senate President imported a car and didn't want to pay duties, how much more a company that has the resources to bribe customs personnel. So long as the crime has not gone beyond the statute of limitations, it can be prosecuted and recovered.
Fraud is uncovered daily across the world. If you follow football, Messi, Ronaldo and Mourinho have been charged with underpaying taxes as well. It is only when reconciliations are done that underpayments are discovered, and the discovery of one instance could lead to further digging that would uncover a culture of such underpayments. Oga, na God I take beg you...do NOT say what you do not know. I worked for different telecom infrastructure companies in Nigeria for several years, and if there is one thing I know like the back of my hand, it is the logistics and supply chain structure of the telecoms industry. It is NOT actually MTN that imports any equipment into the country. It is the OEMs, their agents, franchisees or their local subsidiaries that do so. Siemens, Motorola, Ericsson and other OEMs etc, have factories abroad, that manufacture these telecoms equipment. What they do is to conduct presentations for different GSM companies on the range of products they have manufactured in their firms, abroad. Based on their project requirements, MTN, Airtel, Glo, 9Mobile etc, can issue an LPO or an order for the product or service they require. The OEMs like Siemens, Motorola, Ericsson etc, then import the items under their own names (i.e. as the consignee) and clear them by themselves. They are the ones who pay the import duties, taxes etc on the imported equipment, not MTN! After inspecting the equipment, and making sure it is in good condition, they then deliver it to MTN, Glo, Airtel or whoever requested it. The OEMs or their sub-contractors or agents are also the ones who install and commission the equipment. After a period of testing to make sure it meets their requirements, then the GSM companies like MTN, Glo, Airtel etc, would sign off on the waybills, delivery notes or completion certificate, to convey acceptance. It is only at this point, that the title of ownership of the equipment, gets transferred to the end user (e.g. MTN, Glo, Airtel). Hope that is clear. So using cars as an example, is a wrong form of illustration. It doesn't work like that in telecoms. In fact, in the past few years, there has been a lot of emphasis on leasing of equipment, and not outright purchases, anymore. And in such cases, the ownership of the equipment, rests with the leasing company, not the lessee. |

mfm04622: There is tax evation and there is tax avoidance. FG did not say MTN DID NOT pay tax, FG said MTN UNDERPAID taxes. Big difference. Sometimes, the end user is held liable for taxes on imported goods. For example, duty on vehicle. If duty is not paid on imported vehicles, govt will seize the vehicle from the present owner even when the owner was not the importer. It has escaped govt notice before, now they have observed it. Should govt allow MTN to cheat us? Nigerians should be happy govt is pursuing tax defaulters. Underpaid tax? In what way? Govt says one thing without proof, and you chaps recycle it without knowing the facts, or the way the industry works. The telecoms equipment were imported by different companies (not related to MTN), using their own company names, and not MTN's name. Such equipment was only sold to MTN after it had arrived in the country. And the names and identities of the consignees are well documented, and known to govt. Their offices are also open and still doing business. MTN did not import the equipment, or clear the goods. So on what basis are they holding MTN? And using cars as an example, is a totally wrong illustration which cannot apply to the telecom industry. Sp do not go down that route, unless you want people to laugh you to scorn. |

rman: You are the one of the reasonable fellow on this thread, if not this site.
Most Nigerians lack the capability to see the bigger picture.
What this govt is trying to do is take over that company. It is quite clear right from the first year.
It is no coincedence that they are being attacked by different govt agencies including NLC.
Is the govt saying MTN cooporate governance and ethics is worst than GLOs? Don't mind them. Majority of those jumping up and down on this thread, do not know the first thing about telecoms firms, or the way they operate. When it comes to Mobile Switching Centres (MSC) for example, it is the big telco infrastructure companies like Motorola, Ericsson and Siemens that play in this field. They are the OEMs. MTN does not manufacture one single pole, modem, RF radio or antennae for its operations. These telco infrastructure firms bring in the equipment, sell it to MTN, Airtel, Glo and co, and then maintain it for a stipulated number of years. And they all have offices and warehouses in Lagos. So how can govt tell us that their Federal Ministry of Finance officials all over the federation, as well as tax authorities at federal and state level, including Nigerian Customs Services turned a blind eye to the fact that MTN was not paying taxes and import duties, for 10 whole years?!! Haba! Make dem dey lie, small-small nah! If what govt is saying is actually true, then every senior staff of the Ministry of Communications, as well as Ministry of Finance, including FIRS and Customs, from the level of director upwards, should be sacked with immediate effect! They have failed woefully in this regard! |

RevenGeMission: If NCC knows that it's doing Nigerians shouldn't bear the brunt , this company has raked enough profit already and what the FG is demanding is a chicken change compared to what some stupid bankers helped MTN to launder
If NCC knows what it's doing MTN would be forced to provide quality service and no additional cost or pain to Nigerians , You do not know anything about how telcos operate, so kindly educate yourself. It is only in Nigeria, that telcos have to provide 2 generators at every Base Transceiver Site (BTS), because your power infrastructure is in shambles. It is only in Nigeria, that telcos have to pay state govts exorbitant amounts for right-of-way (ROW) to lay fibre-optic cables, in order to provide telecom services to the public. It is only in Nigeria, that BTS locations are vandalised routinely by miscreants, local govt agents and indigenous community members/youths, with their valuable equipment stolen, because they want to extort money from the telcos. Equipment ranging from air-conditioners in telecom shelters, to switches LNBs or BUCs as well as diesel gensets, are stolen daily from different BTS sites nationwide, and this has a negative impact on the telco's network. How can good services be provided, in the midst of so many constraints? Yet, the telcos are doing their best to still provide such services despite all these challenges. Nothing was laundered by any bank. The money that MTN earned as revenue from its services was kept in the banks, and repatriated to their parent company or their home country. So the word 'launder' does not apply to MTN's operations, in this case. |
