2special: you can wake up by 6:30am and still get to your place of work before 8am in Lagos, you guys should forget about the notion that everybody wakes up by 4:30 am in Lagos... even there people that leave home by 7am and get to their place of work before 8am. Oga, it depends on where you live in Lagos, as compared to where you work. You cannot leave Ifako-Ijaiye at 6:30 a.m in the morning to get to your office in Victoria Island by 8:00a.m, during a working week. It is close to impossible, with the traffic you will encounter along Agege Motor Road, coming down from old Lagos-Abeokuta expressway. But if you live in Onikan area of Lagos Island or in Lekki Phase 1, you can leave your home at 7:00 a.m to get to your office in Victoria Island or Ikoyi, by 8:00 a.m. The same thing applies, if you live in Yaba and work in Surulere. Nothing spoil. |

I have always said it. Nigerian govt agencies only know how to pay lip service using empty rhetoric, when it comes to supporting SMEs. The govt is known for launching outlandish schemes with fanfare, which they claim would benefit SMEs. At the end of the day, very few of those SMEs record any benefit from such schemes, and the few that do so, either have long legs or godfathers that most of the others, do not have. Simon Kolawole even tried to enumerate the number of different levies inflicted on various businesses, by different arms of govt. He should come to Lagos, and see. Those levies can be raised to the power of 5, as different charges come up in every district, from different govt agencies. Don't forget Land Use Charge, o. It is still part of the cost that a landlord passes down to his commercial tenants. There was another thread launched a few months ago, about the stress that SMEs face, in trying to get access to loans from the Bank of Industry (BOI). Even after the SMEs have complied with all the paperwork, getting the bank officials to inspect the premises of the business, is a herculean task. And after the unfathomable delays encountered from the bank officials, the applications of SME firms then elapse, as it is only valid for a short period. Tell me now, na who be mumu? |

If you doubt it, check the rent price on Google for both towns and compare it, again the cost of living in Lagos is generally higher than that of suleja even that of Niger state as a whole Go back and read my post again with an open mind. Out of all the areas I mentioned, you decided to focus on Abule-Egba and you chose to compare it with Suleja. Is Abule-Egba the only area in Lagos? What about the rent in Badagry, Ijegun, Ketu, Okokomaiko, Lakowe and Epe? Or are those areas not part of Lagos? Oga, you people should stop comparing apples with oranges..... |

Gerrard59: This is common sense na. The COL in Suleja should be lower than Lagos, ditto wages/salaries, which is why the COL is lower.
Simple economics! It depends on what part of Lagos, you are referring to. Lagos is a sprawling metropolis with 20 local governments, that stretches from Badagry, to Ikorodu, Shomolu, Ajao Estate, Maryland, Lekki, Itire, Ikate, Orile, Kosofe, Ifako-Ijaiye, Ifelodun, Igando/Ikotun, to Surulere, Yaba, Ikeja, Magodo, Ogba, Agege, etc. So what part of Lagos, are you comparing with Suleja? Rents across these different districts in Lagos, are as different as night and day. Or do you want to compare the rent in Ikoyi to what is paid in Abule-egba? |

If the case gets to court, do you know how long it would take to get a verdict? What is the penalty for such actions under our laws, sef? The best way to make him pay, is to name and shame him publicly, in addition to stripping him of his dignity like she has done. My take? onegig: I understand your grievances about estimated billing. Yeah people deserve to know exactly how much they are using and deserve accountability. I was just giving you another perspective why you see them foot dragging as regards distribution of prepaid meters. Prepaid meters aren't rocket science so why is it so hard to just distribute it. Seems perplexing given this has been an ongoing issue for more than a decade now. That alone should tell you there is more than meets the eye.
I wish I recorded the Estate committee around here going round with loud public address systems to beg members to please pay their NEPA bills. Tell an average Nigerian household to show you their bill and see the gangantum debts on it. They had to disconnect the whole transformer in a Local government when I served in Kano for months because 90% of the households did not fulfil their obligations in paying bills and this same scenario is replicate in almost all part of the country.
I think the leaders are part of the problem . When politicians campaign about light and water. I only wish they candidly tell people it comes at a cost but who would vote for such honesty?
As for your cost comparison. Per kwh electricity in the US costs 12cents per kilowatt. Compare to Nigeria where it costs 6 Cents and Germany where it is 35cents pkwh. Fun fact there was a thread here some years back about Nigerians in the UK turning off their inner lights and using the TV reflection because of high energy bills. Lol.
The problems in the power sector doesn't lie on the part of the end user alone but in this regard my reply was in response to the thread and the response of people stating that they used to receive N200 naira as monthly electricity bills and their annoyance that it has increased to N1000 or so. Oga, please nobody can ever tell you truthfully & honestly, that they used to receive 200 naira as monthly bills. So please stop exaggerating. It is simply NOT possible. Even the paper used to print the bill, costs more than 200 naira. And each time people claim that cost per kilowatt in the US and UK is higher than Nigeria, I always ask them to also do the same comparative analysis to cover wages and salaries received by workers in the UK & US, and then weigh it to what people are being paid in Nigeria. What is the minimum monthly wage in Nigeria, compared to the US & UK? What is the cost of service delivery in the US/UK compared with Nigeria? In Saudi Arabia and in some other OPEC nations, what is the cost of power? Before doing such comparisons, you need to put them in proper context. You cannot price a commodity or service, above people's ability to pay. In the UK, several years back when water rates were privatised & hiked, they discovered that the elderly, infirm and disabled people were dying in several districts, due to lack of access to pipe-borne water. They realised that people in this group, could not afford to pay the same water rates as the rest of the population, due to their low purchasing power. So what happened? Their govt reduced the water rates for this class of people. The problem with this nation, is that there is too much waste and greed within the system. Let the DISCOs think outside the box on how to provide services, and collect their bills. The example you gave of an entire community in Kano that did not pay their electricity bills, reeks of exaggeration. Was the DISCO still providing them with power, after they failed to make payment for electricity they received? In various communities within the Southwest and North-central, you will discover that entire districts have been languishing without electricity for years. The DISCOs (or their grandfather which used to be known as NEPA) disconnected them from the national grid many years ago, and those people have accepted their fate. You claim there are gargantuan debts on electricity bills of many households. Why didn't you ask if those bills were valid or accurate? I just told you my own experience of how my family house was wrongly billed 65,000 naira in just 1 month, due to an error by the DISCO, yet they refused bluntly to rectify it. Anyone who sees that bill, will believe that we incurred that amount due to our consumption, yet the entire house was vacant for over 1 year, except for a caretaker living inside one room in the BQ. Tell me, do I have a bakery in my house, that could have led them to inflict such a bill upon the place, in just 1 month? |
Politics › Re: Ambode Spends Over 100mn Euros On Lagos Light Rail Project by LaudableXX: 9:20pm On Aug 16, 2018 |
AZeD1: Ottawa's LRT is costing $2 billion for the first stage. Its 12.5km in Length with a project timeline of 6 years.
Its way shorter than that of Lagos but a large part of it runs underground.
The 2nd phase which is 11km is expected to cost $1.8 billion.
So the city of Ottawa would be spending about $4B on a 24km LRT while that of Lagos is 27km.
I am not saying Lagos is transparent or not inflated. Abeg, stop comparing apples with cocoyams. You just said that Ottawa's light rail is expected to run underground. This means drilling, excavation, concrete tunnels etc, would be prevalent in the Ottawa design. Did any part of the Lagos light rail run underground? How much excavation was done, down here? The Ottawa Light Rail is expected to include a 3.2km-long downtown tunnel, unlike the Lagos light rail. Secondly, the type of trains to be used for the Ottawa light rail system, are quite different from the Tokunbo models that would be deployed on the Lagos light rail system. They are brand new swanky Bombardier bullet trains or Bombardier Talent multiple unit trains, not the same type as those proposed for Lagos LRT. Thirdly, the Ottawa light rail is expected to span 6 years for the entire project, from inception to completion. Lagos light rail has been under construction for how many years again....remind me? |

RockHard: Eh.. this has been trashed here before. They are not the same model. Besides, the Lagos one has met with series of challenges that's affected its timely delivery.
Lagos light rail is elevated for most parts since it runs on swampy land and it's also a 2 way rail.
You'll have to calculate the cost of the pilings, the concrete footings and it's larger size to accommodate the 2 trains at the same time.
It also crosses a water body and it's complete with a super highway that runs alongside it with pedestrian bridges linking the train stations which are also elevated.
The Ethiopian Lightrail runs on land and is a normal railway line with stops alongside it.
Their specifications and topography are miles apart, hence the cost difference and delivery timing. (Credit to ba7man). Guy, which other light rail project in the world is as expensive as the one that Lagos has embarked upon? Over 100 million Euro has been spent, and yet it is unfinished. Instead of trying to do a root cause analysis, we are giving excuses of topography and swamps? Haba! onegig: We need to tell ourselves the truth.
Electricity is not cheap. I see people commenting about N200 per month for NEPA bills?
How many minutes would N200 fuel last in your generator that you expect to pay N200 per month for an average of 4hours of light per day?
Yeah. There are crazy bills sometimes. But millions of households have not paid NEPA bills in like years and they expect good supply.
We all shout about overseas but kindly ask your families living outside the country how much they pay on electricity bills and you would know that to get something good you have to pay for it. Businesses aren't charity and to break even they need to make money also. You do NOT need to lie, in order to get your points across. Is it possible for millions of households not to pay any electricity bill for years, within this same Nigeria, and still be enjoying power? What do you get from telling bold-faced lies, like this? Is it because you want to defend the DISCOs who are your paymasters? In my own old family house, our average bill for the old meter was about 8,500 per month. We applied for the new meter, but it was never given to us. Every month we got the estimated bill, we paid. The highest we ever paid in one month was 13,000 naira. All of a sudden, we were issued a bill of 65,000 naira for one month out of the blues. We were aghast. We wrote letters and complained. We went to their offices several times, and reported the case. After 2 months, one of the managers confessed that the wrong factor or equation, was used to calculate the bill for that month. Okay, we begged him to reverse the charges and re-calculate the bill. He refused. The entire EKEDC office managers in the district, claimed we should first pay the 65k, before they could treat our case. Next thing, they cut off the power supply. We dragged the matter for several months, but still had to pay. And then they made us pay reconnection fees as well. How anybody can defend a 65k monthly bill for a 3-bedroom house that does not use air-conditioners and lacks electric cookers, but has only one caretaker living inside just one room within the building, still beats me hollow, till today. In many parts of the country, the DISCOs are quick to cut off power supply due to non-payment of bills, even when those bills are wrongly computed by them. So where are the millions of households that have been enjoying power for free, but do not want to pay? Where did you see them? Did you do a survey before you jumped to this asinine conclusion? The "overseas" you referred to so blithely, would not give you estimated bills for electricity supply, you have never received. Go and check. You can sue the pants off them, if they try such nonsense with you. Or your elected officials can lose elections or may even be embroiled in a scandal, if they allow such illegal actions, to stand. So stop making unsubstantiated comments, please. |

BluntBoy: The "cross-country trip" is a sacrifice, not a lowering of standards. That is the point. There are people who make more severe sacrifices to be with the person they love. When you see this sacrifice as a lowering of standards, then it has become something else entirely.
The problem many people make is assumption. They assume something is what it is because of how they see it. It is one reason why people often project their feelings onto others. Some try to blame others for everything. A marriage does not work out, they blame someone. A relationship does not work out, they blame someone. They stumble, they blame someone. They fail an exam that they didn't prepare for, they blame the lecturer.
As for Isolo, you must understand that there are big men living there. I am talking about men and women who are far richer than this lady. Pasuma has a house in Mushin and he is ten times richer than this lady. As for slums, there are slums even in rich states in the United States. Guy, if you read the girl's story well, you would see that the cross-city or cross-country trips, was borne out of her desire to make sacrifices, in order to make the relationship work. She could have refused to make those trips on account of the long distance, or could have opted to avoid the relationship totally, because the guy's place was on the other side of town. But she did not do so. She made the sacrifice, which was NOT reciprocated by the way, and even went as far as dropping her car for the guy's use, while she was left without a means of personal transport. What is that, if not a sacrifice? What else must a girl do, in order to make a relationship work? Some people take others for granted through their actions or words, and that is exactly what that guy did to her. If her feelings had been reciprocated and the relationship had ended in marriage, would she have come online to say what she said? No. There is nothing in her write-up to show that she projected her feelings on to the guy. They were in a relationship. Yet, the guy did not value her efforts or her desire, to make things work. It appears he took advantage of her good nature, and misbehaved. Whenever a relationship ends, people are quick to blame a woman, but hardly ever think that a man could be just as responsible for its demise. It takes two to tango, and two people to make a relationship work. A woman cannot be putting in all the effort, while a man is nonchalant about playing his part, to make things work. As for slums, the fact that one or two rich men live in a slum, does not automatically make that slum a high-brow area. Do you know Isolo rather well? Apart from Ire-Akari estate which is the only planned portion in that district, every other place is a slum. I know the place like the back of my hand - from Jakande estate, to Oke-afa to Ejigbo. The place is congested, noisy and poorly planned. |

BluntBoy: She is hard on the eye. And from her little story, it is not hard to tell that she has got horrible attitudes.
For instance, she thinks it is lowering of class to drive from Victoria Island down to Isolo. She was merely stating a fact. How well do you know Isolo? Have you been to Kogberegbe, Oke-afa, Jakande etc? Do you know the slums of Isolo? Have you been caught up in the Isolo-Ejigbo traffic before, sandwiched between multiple fuel tankers belching smoke, into your nostrils in the heat? The noise, the bad roads etc? She called it "lowering her standards," going all the way from Victoria Island to Isolo. Was she referring to the guy's neighbourhood, or to the fact that she was the one doing the 'cross-country' intra-city trip, ever so often? If the guy reciprocated her efforts, she certainly wouldn't be here saying all these things. Let us be frank - a number of Nigerian men, are quite insecure around successful women. Many of us are aware of what our fellow men think and feel, about such things. A growing number of young men these days, are also nothing but opportunists. Let's call a spade, a spade! |

FrancisDiote: The only moral reason men wont date you is ARROGANCE/PRIDE. If you are arrogant just forget it.
Sometimes, you display these qualities unconciously.
Try been HUMBLE and see men beg you for date Stop those lies, abeg! Do you know the girl personally, or have you met her before? how can you then jump to the conclusion that she is arrogant? An arrogant woman will not leave her car, for a boyfriend to drive. She will not bother driving all the way to Isolo, just to visit a man - do you know the kind of traffic that exists on Lagos roads, especially in Isolo? There are too many men who are opportunists out there....let us tell ourselves, the truth! |

Follow these tips and finding a husband should not be hard. Oga, the richest woman in Africa got married when she was still an ordinary secretary - long before she even smelt any riches! Educate yourself, abeg... She got married over 40 years ago, in 1976! |

Nigerian Singer, Emma Nyra who was once signed on to Ubi Franklin’s MMMG(Triple MG) records has just welcomed a set of twins, a baby boy and girl.
The singer took to her IG page to reveal the good news, she wrote:
""I have never been so inspired and full of love as I am today. With style and full force, you’ve both entered this world and forever impacted my destiny. My career has been my top priority for the past ten years of my life, so you can imagine that I was surprised and shocked for what God had in store for me! Last year I over booked and over worked myself tirelessly just to be able to accomplish one of my biggest goals which was to move into my dream home in Lagos!.....
On August 11, 2018 in the early morning of 2 am, after 36 hours of labor, I gave birth to two beautiful children Alexandría and Alexander. The babies and I are doing very well by Gods’ Grace! I want to thank every single person who supported me and sent me well wishes, advice, and encouragement.
I’m so excited to begin this journey of motherhood and I deeply encourage all women, especially mothers of multiples, to feel free to share your experiences and advice with me!""
Gists via: http://www.yomzzyblog.com/2018/08/singer-emma-nyra-delivers-twins-photos.html 36 hours of labour??! Haba! Which kind wicked doctor allowed her to go through all that? Why didn't they advise her to opt for a cesarean section? |
