Olu317: Oh k bro, I sheath my sword. I have no doubt in my heart that BINI came to Lagos, and all fact support . The layi Ajayi Bembe want relevance and there is a reason everyone chose to act the way they do. On the attack on Oba BINI, could be likened to so many reasons which I wouldn't want to go deep into it . As a descendant of oranmiyan myself, and have seen so many things lost to whirlwind because of over secrecy, has made to come forth to bring out fact hidden on certain issues to the best of my human knowledge. And I have the right to correct certain lies being peddled online because I am well suited to inform at this moment to the best of my knowledge so that the public will see somethings as it was and still the way it is . Isn't it very disgraceful even when Oba BINI believed that one BINI prince /person migrated to ILE IFE and set up the place. Odu'a was attached to white, his ancestors was attached to white and his descendants are attached to white in the term of ancestral linkage (Purity) while BINI is attached to red. Does this not show, the real BINI princes had been short changed? Is Oba of Lagos heavily attached to red as BINI? The BINI claimed that they owned the word O-ba when in fact the word isn't a daily usage in BINI, which is directly opposite in Yoruba land, including Lagos . The so called BINI people want to take the glory given to ILE IFE but it won't work. Almighty God don't make mistake, that's the reason ILE IFE will always be in reckoning. Olusegun Aganga etc is a BINI/IDU man and perhaps one day his descendants will wake up one day and say they own the whole part their ancestors migrated toward. The reality is that the BINI make too much noise about conquest when infact the Itsekiri have more say than BINI in Lagos. Let them be where God place them instead of overstretched hands on imaginary things. So don't blame some people if they are angry at what they know as concurrent lies...... Nobody is taking any glory that belongs to Ile-Ife, and I have not seen any Bini person doing so! I don't know why you brought Olusegun Aganga into this discussion, because the conversation has absolutely nothing to do with him. From the little I know about the man, he is half-Edo and half-Lagosian Yoruba. So what is the issue? Pls try to check all what led to the main discussion on this thread, before putting up your remarks. Thank you. |

NoToPile: People must talk sha.
Where I come from its not compulsory to go to your fathers compound in the village to pay dowry, you can have your trad at whatever location your parents are you can even use a rented hall away from whereever your parents are as long as parents of the bride agree with the location. ( weddings are planned and hosted by the brides family in youruba land). Its not a communal thing unlike some traditions. The koko is the thing must be paid.
Besides who knows whether they have settled the brides (adesuwa) parents in their parlor and now they are just doing feferity. I have seen this happen before, pay the bride price in the parlor and then throw a big party for the same trad marriage( we have too much wahala for partying in this country sef) At the part in bolded type....my sentiments exactly!! |

Benita27: Go tell that to an alien. Does a Nembe woman assumes her father's name after marriage or her husband's name, and in whose compound is a Nembe woman buried?. You've not mentioned how the mother's lineage features strongly in their tradition so I'll say you don't know what you're saying. Bye!. Madam, please take my advice and talk to Nembe elders to educate you on the matrilineal aspects of their culture. Those aspects were listed in my last post. Bye! |

Benita27: Hahaha. Clearly you're confused. Sorry, to say.
Bayelsa State is a product of Rivers State so when it comes to marital rites, they share same. Nembe tradition isn't matrilineal but still patriarchal. The matrilineal succession rites and customs has to do with giving the bride's mother what's due her before the girl is married off. It's normal tradition in most part of the country 'cause they have a separate list for the mother and a certain amount is paid to her aside bride price which her father take on. You need research the most. No madam, you are the one that needs to do more research. Please go and talk to Nembe elders. Don't make assumptions here. It goes beyond giving gifts to the bride's mother. Remember, I also mentioned matrilineal succession and customs. If a society is patrilineal, wouldn't inheritance customs be based on the father's lineage? Why then does the mother's lineage feature so strongly in Nembe culture? |

Could you please enlighten me on Nembe tradition?. Madam, please do your research by talking to Nembe elders. It is good that you are close to them. Ask them about matrilineal succession rights and customs. And the rudeness was in the way you queried if I was a Nigerian? Sanchez01: Lol! The second paragraph would be a flimsy excuse of not having the wedding in her father's compound. Who chases her daughter out of her compound to wed in the traditional way just because he is Mysophobic or can't stand dirt? Guy, you really need to see the damage done at some venues after the party is over. From piles of dirty plates, to piles of leftover food, damaged cisterns in toilets, broken bottles, even missing valuables and items....the list is endless. Can you vouch that all your guests will treat your things with respect? One of my neighbours' swore never to hold parties in his house again, after he surveyed the damage done to his property, by revellers at his party. Worse still, the party didn't end till 2 a.m and he couldn't get to sleep, because of the filth and smells in the house. Someone had even gotten drunk and sprawled across his bed, after vomiting on the bed linen! |

No sir. They had just two - introduction (at the end of which bride price was discussed) because groom's family came from afar and needed to go back, and then the traditional wedding party which took place a month after the introduction. |

Benita27: Stop misleading people. There's nothing like two cultures here. In the African setting, her father's cultures/tradition is what she follows. Perhaps, you just want to let sentiment cloud your judgement. I quit arguing on this matter. It actually depends on the family involved. Some families might choose to blend both cultures, while others may opt to discard one and stick to the other. Most of those who are die-hard advocates of the father's culture becoming more dominant, are those whose parents come from the same ethnic stock. Those with parents who come from different ethnic groups, are far more tolerant about blending aspects of both cultures, during an event. And there is nothing like a single African setting. In fact, there are different types of African cultures. Are you aware that in a few African cultures, the matrilineal aspect prevails? |

You are absolutely right and exposed the dirty lies of these people with low self-esteem.
Amen Estate is in Ibeju Lekki [an Ijebu coastal town in Lagos State]. Amen "RedBrick" Estate is owned and developed by a man of Yoruba ancestry. Many people of Yoruba descent live in Amen Estate - some of who I know!
The guy who designed or uploaded that graphic picture to taunt Yoruba people is dubious just like his ignorant ilk of SE origin who write FAKE stories online and offline.
Most of the people living on water in places like Makoko are illegal migrants from Benin and Togo and not even Ogus[Eguns] or Ilajes as erroneously thought. The language that is used to teach children in that popular Floating School is French, not even English or Yoruba. I saw that in a documentary about 2 years ago.
Happy weekend and take charge @laudate. Thanks for your kind words. Don't mind that clown. He and his ilk are fond of peddling lies, deceit and conjecture using a variety of tools, from memes to fake words. He is still pushing his brand of deceit on other threads, even as we speak. |

Sanchez01: Bless you! Perhaps the parents' house isn't too befitting and they actually thought the scenes would give critics something to talk about. We are Africans before any other thing. Perhaps they thought about the convenience of their guests, which was why they chose to hold it in an event centre where there would be ample space and security?? Or perhaps they wanted to avoid the whole wahala of cleaning up their compound and fixing damages that might have occurred, the day after the festivities are over? |

Sanchez01: Lol. Interestingly, even the Yoruba culture does not allow for a woman to take the role of the family head during traditional rites. While I understand that education is necessary, the whole show could be considered an affront to the Edo culture.
Some would say we should do away with these cultures because the world is fast revolving while Indians and Chinese folks are unconsciously teaching us theirs.
Just recently, I celebrated Diwali with some Indian clients because they insisted. These guys go as far as possible to preserve their culture and the little we have is fast dying. I doubt even the father understood what was expected of him. I highly do. Are you sure the bride price had not been discussed and offered in secret within the girl's family house, prior to the whole event? Even the chief complaining officer wasn't totally sure about that bit. One of my maternal second cousins who got married recently (her father is Edo) did something similar. The bride price was done the day before in the father's house, but it was returned to the groom's family in a rather symbolic manner. The whole action was repeated again the following month, during the traditional ceremony, with same results, just for the eyes of the public |
