It is you and your brethren that clamour for a separate homeland, without addressing the fall out, or the consequences that may arise after it is granted. Some of us have learnt from the folly of your people in Port-harcourt after the civil war, when their buildings were declared abandoned properties. Even now, they have not sat down to think things through, about what fate would befall their commercial investments in Nigeria, after they pull out. Isn't that the height of shamelessness? huh

Nobody is anti-Biafra here. And there are no lamentations. sad We just want you to be well-equipped with the facts, so that you can quickly get your own merry homeland. The sooner you get it, the better for the rest of us.

You chaps are fond of blaming others, when things do not work out the way you planned. We just want to ensure that this time around, you will not be able to shift the blame in the direction of other ethnic groups, by claiming they did not warn you of the loopholes, well ahead of time. The same way African leaders like Habib Ben Ali Bourguiba of Tunisia, Nnamdi Azikiwe of Nigeria and even the late Adeyinka Adebayo of the old Western region warned Ojukwu in the past, and he refused to listen. Everyone saw the result of his decision. Nobody should wake up tomorrow & say we did not do our duty in notifying you. undecided

Listen brother KANU , I understand the frustration. I wish things can work that way. But everything that happens in the world has a precedent and there is something called international law. That's where the elites and intelligentsia are important for the struggle.

John Garange was elite of the South Sudan he was instrumental to the peace talk that led to independence of South Sudan. After he died in a plane crash, Silva Kiir, his lieutenant, who was also another elite, took over and led the country to Independence.

Our people should be very careful so that they do not shoot themselves in the foot. Things do not happen by emotions. The international law does not recognize emotions.

First and foremost Nigeria is an independent sovereign state, a member state of the UN, AU, Commonwealth of Nations and Ecowas. She has diplomatic relations with over 100 countries in the world. Her sovereignty is respected and protected under the UN law, it means that until she decides by herself to partitioned herself, no country in the world will recognize any part of Nigeria that forced itself out of Nigeria.

A country is a country when it is recognized by other countries as a sovereign state recognized by the UN and member states.

I give you an example of what will happen when the elite of Igboland do not engage Nigeria in discussions about self determination. By the way the 1999 constitution does not have any provisions for self determination of any part of the federation like the US or U.K. Constitution, for a debate or discussion to happen about letting a part to go the constitution which is the supreme law of the law must be amended or changed.

This is what will happen if you fail to act within the international law framework. You will become like entities such as Northern Cyprus which broke away from the south in 1974 with the support of Turkish Army; which after 42 years, no country in the world other than Turkey recognized.

The north Cyprus does not do business with any country in the world, they do not have international passport recognized by any country in the world, their citizens are given Turkish citizenship so that they can travel out. Their money is not recognized by world bank and they cannot trade with the outside world. But they have been existing on their own for 42 years now. Currently they are agitating for reunification with the South which is called Greek Cyprus.

This is a precedent to look at. Somaliland was colonized by Britain while Somalia was colonized by Italy. After independence, Somaliland willingly join their Somali brothers to become the republic of Somalia. When civil war broke out in Somalia about 25 years ago, Somaliland which was very peaceful and functioning, withdrew from the Somalia republic.

25 years after, even though Somalia is a failed state and Somaliland has been having peaceful democratic elections and functioning like a state, no country in the would recognized Somaliland as a country. Her citizens are still called Somali and can only travel outside with Republic of Somalia passport.

Somaliland is living on international aid because it cannot do business with any country in the world. Their money cannot exchange for international currencies because it's not recognized by world bank and IMF. This is a precedent in our own Africa.

The two breakaway regions of Georgia known as South Ossetia and Abkhazia are recognized only by Russia more than 10 years after they broke away from Republic of Georgia with Russian support. Till this day only Russia recognized them as a sovereign entity. No one does business with them. In order for them to travel out they took Russian citizenship and obtain Russian passports. But by international law they are still Georgians.

Ukraine conflict is still on till this day. The East broke out of the Ukraine with the help of Russia military. The war is still on. Even though for 3 years the Ukrainian government is not in control of those regions. No country in the

Mujtahida:
Some two or three years ago when I first watched this Sardauna clip I was shocked even though I had always known that he just like Awolowo and Zik were tribalist as were almost all the leading politicians of that era

But this now is my point: The danger of a single story (thanks to Chimamanda A). When you post such a video always remember to post the following to balance the sums in the ethno tribal equation:
'the domination of Nigeria and Africa by the Igbo is only a matter of time”. Charles Dadi Onyeama member central legislative council representing Enugu spoken at the Igbo state of the union address in 1945. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/opinion/142477-the-bitter-truth-about-the-igbo-by-femi-fani-kayode.html

Azikiwe in a statement published by the Daily service had also said that the god of the Igbos had given them the leadership over Nigeria. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/opinion/164552-why-we-should-split-nigeria-now-by-damola-awoyokun.html

They were all tribalists (Nigerians generally still are) and really without justifying our founding fathers I prefer their own kind of tribalism because everyone knows what Sardauna achieved for the North then in terms of development and Awolowo too for the Southwest because their tribalism was born out of genuine love they had for their people unlike our politicians today whose tribalism is empty, devoid of love even for their own kin.

This is what irks my soul: we will all join hands and condemn my brother for his reprehensible actions but when your brother does something condemnable, you shield him, you hide him, you try to justify his actions by pointing to my brother who has already been roundly condemned by ALL.

Me I say Mbanu to such. Let us all bear responsibility for our actions. Nigeria's problem absolutely did not start with the civil war. The things that have happened in Nigeria have been caused by a confluence of factors, of attitudes, decisions and actions by the actors each one building upon the other and setting the stage for the next. Do not point your fingers at Sarduana. We are all guilty.
You saw how the chap you responded to, was quick to overlook the tribalism in Onyeama and Azikiwe's comments, and ascribe it to a desire to motivate their ethnic group, in the area of education. Can you see the hypocrisy? shocked If such comments came from a member of another ethnic group, the spin he would have put on it would have been different, even if it was uttered in a similar context.

of course not once you can do the needful (get a Yoruba wife). On a serious note, I don't share outrightly banning as it seems because once you have what it takes to bring value to our nation ,why not? I am a hardened conservative but give wisdom to rule my decision. So ,once you are willing to support our dream and aspirations, you will be allowed to naturalized as It fit in to my own “opinion".
MrMaestro:
Those that are yorubanized will be the last of our worries. It is easy to know this if their families have spent generations here as you've stated. Their parents and grandparents will be recognized by the government as residents in the region and will be overlooked. Those that are more recent arrivals will definitely be subject to more scrutiny and most will be deported unless: you are not a criminal, you are intelligent and have a technical skill you're offering to yoruba society, and most importantly if you love Yorubas as you love your own brothers. Otherwise, non yoruba residents are most likely to be deported. If somehow a person is deported who is all that is listed, they will most surely gain reentry once they apply and go through the system.

Its not an attack on any tribe or minority, it is simply a measure of a protection for future yoruba generations so no one should take it the wrong way. There are countries that allow poor and jobless entry into their country for a better life (ex. US) Then there are countries who only prefer to allow expats and professionals (ex. Japan). I am for the latter. I hope that answers your question.
omohayek:
Don't worry, not all of us are hardliners! Besides, it's one thing to advocate such harsh measures in a vacuum, and another thing to get them passed when you have to deal with millions of voters whose families will be personally affected. I just don't ever see a situation where the Yoruba majority will sit by and accept the forced deportation of their wives, husbands, cousins, old friends and trusted colleagues.

I also understand where the desire for a hard policy comes from, but I don't think there's a need to apply it universally and blindly to get the same effect. Something as simple as saying "You can't hold simultaneously hold our citizenship and that of X", while imposing a Yoruba-language fluency condition, would easily achieve much the same result, without needlessly expelling people who are not only friendly but have valuable skills and resources to contribute.
I really appreciate all your responses & I fully understand where you are coming from. God bless you all.wink

If we are going to be selective by extending automatic Yoruba-pass to Laudate, why do we not just extend to the other Yorubanized people from the over 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria? Better still, why do we not just remain in Nigeria rather than rack brains over what a Yoruba state would be like.

Yes, we may have soft spots for folks we have bonded or have relations with but this is about Yoruba as a nation, its interest takes precedence. Our forefathers made a mistake with political correctness, sophistication of accommodation and being blinded the 'cuteness' of people being 'Yorubanized' a la Azikwe Nnamdi & his NCNC crop of Igbo loyalist who were creeping over institutions in the southwest like yam leaves.

Please, matters surrounding Laudate & people like him would have to take the back seat or they may have to go first. This is Africa not USA, adopting other people's culture still does not bring you into the fold. Heck, children with one of their parents being from certain parts in Yoruba land are cut out of scheme of things by certain parts in the same Yoruba land; children whose Yoruba parent got married to a non Yoruba parent are seen differently in family matters -- what then is the person who took interest in another man's culture and left his father's?

I won't lay things bare but Yoruba has a lot of cleavages within itself to level out first in the case of being an independent state. We cannot have so much family baggages to sort out then slap in matters of outsiders abeg.

Yoruba as a nation is not culturally fluid. To be Yoruba is not by eating the food, speaking the language with accent or having abetiaja glued to the scalp. It goes beyond that and it begins with ile-baba. Has anyone ever wondered by our fathers instituted the ebi system? Have you ever wondered its contributions to the sustainment of the nation? The closest thing to a metropolitan type of stuff we had where everyone could come in to integrate was Ibadan and every (family) compound in Ibadan traces its root to another compound elsewhere.

We need to be very pragmatic. This should be about correcting all mistakes of the past and also blending all sub-sections together to prevent old frictions. Something Yorubanized foreigners may harp on to give us problems.

Yoruba r'onu; forget sophistication and political correctness. Make Baba Awo your guide for our development but make Baba SL Akintola your guide in putting Yoruba first especially when dealing with foreigners, Yorubanized or not.
Don't worry, we understand you very well. smiley Even the part left unsaid, can be decoded. wink Everyone is quite comfortable waiting for your group to brainstorm, deliberate and thrash out this delicate issue extensively among yourselves, before coming to a conclusion. None of us are in a hurry. We respect your views. Even Baba Awo had close aides like Pa Rewane in his inner caucus, and chose Odia Ofeimun as a personal secretary. So please take your time regarding this issue. Wishing you all the best. Peace. undecided and thank you.

P.S: I will not lie, though. sad I found this part of your post, a rather difficult pill to swallow. But I want to believe that you wrote it, as you felt it - because you were trying to make a point, and not to cause any hard feelings. Non-Yoruba folks like us are quite comfortable in our own minority ethnic skin, and our due regard for your kith & kin stems from long interactions over the years. But no stress, sha.
