seunlly: I have always juxtaposed the above story with the experience shared by the Acting President of Nigeria, Prof .Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) at a National Transformation programme hosted by Rev. Sam Adeyemi’s Daystar Christian Centre at the National Stadium in Lagos some 11years ago. The Law Professor had related his experience in some refugee camp in Liberia while on a UN assignment during the war in that country. He said he saw a man in a ragged suit with sunken cheeks covered with unkempt beards. He was holding a bowl eagerly waiting to collect his ration. He said there was nothing unusual about such in a refugee camp until he was told the man was the former Chief Justice of the country. He said may be a bold pronouncement from his court could have altered the turn of events in the country!
The moral of the two stories above is the price our country is paying for the culture of indifference pervading our society. Our moral columns have collapsed largely on account of the prevailing atmosphere of “every one for himself and God for us all.” I cringed the other day when I read the report of some schoolboys on the Island raping some female students in the open in broad daylight and people only gathered to watch as if a magician was on display. But, this is the same society where I grew up fearing any parent in the neighbourhood the way we feared our parents. They would discipline you if you are caught in a wrong act and report to your parents later. Your parent would add his own portion rather than asking why he/she punished you.
Today, everybody only minds his own business. I was in a rich neighbourhood of multi-millionaires and billionaires the other day and a man was telling me how his neighbours refused to cooperate in making a refund to him for the construction on the major road they all use. Not that they don’t have but they just can’t be bothered by what is not for their exclusive use. How can such people push the government to serve the public good? They would rather run to a governor to give them contracts that would benefit them personally rather than push for what would benefit the whole community!
Apart from the bad architecture of governance flowing from our dysfunctional structure, the next gravest impediment to our growth and development is our indifference to collective good and the pursuit of only self. There was a time in our country that human life mattered to so much to us that a lone death in an accident would make the front page of a newspaper. It would take scores of deaths for any accident to make our front page these days. People watch horror images of torture and killings by Boko Haram and other murderous gangs sprawling around our country today as if they watch Nollywood movies. We are no longer moved by adversity. Dead bodies litter our roads and nobody cares.... https://9jabless..com.ng/2017/05/the-price-of-indifference.html?m=1
This article is spot on. I agree with the writer where he said: "But, this is the same society where I grew up fearing any parent in the neighbourhood the way we feared our parents. They would discipline you if you are caught in a wrong act and report to your parents later. Your parent would add his own portion rather than asking why he/she punished you". This was so true.
It reminds me of the good old days. Nowadays, even teachers need to be careful when it comes to disciplining students, especially in private schools. It is the parent that would even call for the suspension of any teacher, who dares to discipline their child. We all need a reorientation of our mindsets in this country. Too many people have become immune to wrongdoing, bloodletting and horror. May God save us all!
jerikoyan: The Ferry had 8 floors we were on the 7th, the journey was 3hr 30mins , first one hour I was just walking around. Buffet was available I actually had 3 rounds .
7 floors inside the ferry?Omo, na dis kind ferry dem suppose bring come Lagos, nah! It will ply Marina to Badagry and then move on to Benin Republic. The ferry will make money, because people going to Ajangbadi and Mile Two will stop over on the way! it will be easy to escape Orile traffic, when you go by this ferry...
By the way, how did the food taste? Was it as good as our own Naija food?
jerikoyan: Husum Germany about 1hour to Denmark, man made lake expansion connected to the North sea (navigation purpose).
See man-made lake, o! If it is our own side here, we will sandfill the lake and sell out the sandfilled plots to rich people who will build mansions on it, with wealth looted from the system.
malton: As in. Sometimes, I feel like weeping each time I see a 13 year old making sound contribution to discourse on Quora.
So because our young ones here cannot make half as good input.
All corners of their heads have already been filled with akpu, hate, and bad behaviour much that there's no space left for sense to enter their brains.
It's a pity.
How won't those young people on Quora make a sound contribution? They have been exposed to critical thinking, objective analysis, thorough research and enlightened, factual, rational discussions. They have learnt how to use qualitative and quantitative analytical skills, to draw appropriate conclusions. They have learnt how to critically evaluate arguments. Our own young people are busy brainwashing themselves with propaganda, false notions, BBNaija, MMM and tawdry hiphop junk music. Many of them have refused to educate themselves.
naptu2: They have resurfaced much of Admiralty Way, from Freedom Way to the roundabout before the bridge. They are resurfacing it with interlocking paving stones. The work is being done in sections. They are also rebuilding the little bridge over the canal at the junction of Freedom Way and Admiralty Way, so motorists have to do a u-turn and take Emmanuel Abimbola Cole Street to get to Admiralty Way from Freedom Way.
This reconstruction is needed, particularly at the section between Ebeano and Freedom Way (Ebeano-Cold Stone - Laura Ikeji - Nepa - Nitel) which has been in bad shape for years.
However, there's a potential problem. They've reconstructed the road in such a way that it is much higher than the sidewalk, so some motorists are now using the sidewalk as an extra lane, thereby endangering pedestrians. The walkway used to be much higher than the road.
I'll try and take pictures later today.
Emma Abimbola Cole Street is now an eyesore. Some portions of the road have caved in, and part of the road now resembles a stagnant river filled with muddy dirty water. It is even worse whenever there is a little rainfall.
johnie: Work is to commence on the construction of the Ajah flyover.
The project is expected to be completed within 18 months.
The Ajah flyover has finally been completed. I took the bridge on Saturday night. It was smooth and free from traffic.
However, the traffic jam from VGC roundabout to Ajah is still there, despite the fact that the bridge has been opened . Part of it is caused by the commercial danfo buses, and mini cabs that stop indiscriminately on the right side of the road to pick up and drop off passengers. I had expected a smooth traffic-free ride from VGC to Ajah with the opening of the flyover, but sadly that was not the case.
The existing jetty at Oworonshoki has been lying fallow and unused for the past few years. Why? I keep saying that Lagos state govt has not explored one-tenth of the potentials that exist in water transportation. They are not tackling water transport with the seriousness, it deserves.
From Ibeju-Lekki to Badagry, Ajah to Epe to Ijegun waterside, Ikorodu and even to Ogun waterside, these coastal routes should be dredged and thrown open to private sector participants who can provide safe and efficient ferries, hovercrafts and speedboats to enhance water transportation within the state. It would take a lot of pressure off our roads and reduce traffic, in addition to making money for govt.
It takes less than 20 minutes to go from Marina to Apapa by ferry. If you go by road, you would spend at least one hour to navigate the pot-holes on Apapa roads, and avoid the trailers that dot the highways in that district. And that is on a good day. On a bad day you would spend nothing less than 3 hours along the same route. We need to start exploring safe alternative options, to reduce the amount of time spent commuting within Lagos state.
LordAdam16: Seriously, when people say intellectuals are on Twitter, I'm like have these people been to Quora.
Take the answer to the question "Is Pele Overrated" attached as an example.
Can anyone offer that kind of insight with all the information on all of Twitter? Yea, I know the commenter is not a Nigerian, but that's the kind of standard Quorans irrespective of nationality live up to.
Twitter users are great at clap-backs, they are witty, and are doers. Versus the other four options on there, of course one would say more intelligent people are on there. But the ratio of intelligent people hanging out at Quora is miles ahead of any platform. Quorans make Twitter users sound like high school kids.
About discussing Nigerian politics on Twitter, well I don't think that's feasible. Our politics is trash, and I mean no disrespect. Our political parties have no ideologies, so there's very little substance to talk about. I mean you could be talking about FFK in PDP today, but there's no guarantee he wouldn't switch to APC or another party tomorrow. And when he does switch, expect all his arguments prior to his switch to turn on its head.
Compared to politics in most other democracies, that's a disgrace. I'd cut us some slack because our democracy is young, but fact is fact.
-Lord
True!! Forget Twitter, when it comes to long discussions. The quality of discourse, articles & viewpoints on Quora is far more engaging, richer in depth & better researched than what you would find on Nairaland.
Whatever happened to superstar1, Gbawe, Richyblack, Orikinla, naptu2 and Areonakakanfo? Anyway, here is another viewpoint from an old post made by one of the veterans on NL.
superstar1: 10years ago I was gisting with my cousin in UK and he asked me whether i have registered on the new raving forum in Nigeria, Nairaland. I told him I do not even have any idea that the new Forum exists. I quickly logged on and found one elementary website bearing Nairaland. Not deterred by the perceived elementary outlook of the forum, I registered and was happy to belong to a platform where i can air my view ona ny issue about my country to the world.
I only restricted myself to Sport section, most especially Manchester United thread. I do peep into Politics, culture and tribal sections once in a while, but there was really nothing unusual apart from the usual news we all have access to in the regular media. Culture section was more informative with some NL encyclopedia lecturing on us who we are as Africans and other cultural stuffs. Due respect to AndreUwe and Fulamania.
Fast forward to mid-2008, Politics section started getting hot with waves upon waves of attacks on Yorubas from Igbos who were spewing their remixed version and make-me-happy tales by moonlight of their Fathers and Uncles false heroics. Major cuplrits were Deridegull, Chino, Oneast or Chinology. Most guys ignored them except Dayokanu that made it a point of duty to decimate all their claims, with Katsumoto delivering irrefutable facts to nullify all animosities against the Yorubas. The hours upon hours of lectures and counter ectures from Katsumoto and Deridegull or Duru1 were very informative. By early 2010, subtle warnings were being sent to Seun to curb tribalism in Politics section, he did not see it as anything serious. By mid-2010, other yorubas felt enough is enough of these shenanigans coming from igbos. The likes of OPCNairaland, MayorofLagos, jakumo, IlekeHD, Gbawe, Aareonakakanfo, Shymexx, led the full scale attack, with Desola being the only female, always hitting the mark in a very subtle but effective way.
This culminated in the myth bursting season, monicker expose season, the season of truce with rendezvous at Beerhugz Ikeja. Ngozievergreen will never forget NL. Those were very brutal days in Politics section of NL. 2015 election brought out the good, the bad and the ugly of NL. It was a propaganda and campaign ground for the major political parties. That was the season of PPP -Pay Per Post. Post election ushered in the cry for bia.fra season. Seun responded to this cry in a manner that has never been seen before on NL. I am not sure DSS did not threaten him on that particular issue.
Due to the clamp down on secession cries, some threatened to migrate out of NL and never to come back. They left, they were not missed and voila, they are back. Some even created parallel fora that never had the pull effect of NL and such fora died a natural death.
We are presently in the season of indiscriminate bans. Just came back from a lengthy ban and i cannot even guarantee not being banned before end of today. . We have seen it all on NL.
The diversity of opinion and the scintillating presentations of some are what make NL thick and addictive. It will be the highest hypocrisy if I fail to mention that tribalism and ethic jabs are also part of the fun of NL, that you might not really get elsewhere, except on Vanguard online and probably Facebook. In the midst of the jabs, we learn one or two things. Atimes some jabs make you to read up on such jabs and you will come back to give a merciless counterjabs. . Veterans will understand what i am talking about.
Government agencies, political parties, security agencies and even print media now know that anyone that ignores NL is doing so at his or own peril. This is a classical example of online forum that has given power to the youths and masses. Here, we can report any agency or personnel of government or corporation or individuals that misbehaves in real time without any fear of harassment, which was prevalent in the days of the likes of Fela and Gani Fawehinmi.
By and large, I have learnt a lot from NL in the last 10years. While growing up, I was never interested in who were our forefathers as Africans, who we were as a people, the events that led to the amalgamation of North and South, the civil war, Awo, Zik, Ahmadu Bello or Oduduwa. The contributions of all from every nook and cranny of Nigeria challenged me to read up, to separate the truth from fallacy. I had to read virtually every book or write up ever written on Nigerian Civil War, Pre and post-independence era, the days of the Evil Genius Maradona, the dark days of Abacha and the emergence of the 4th republic democracy in Nigeria. I also picked interest in the top 5-7 ethnicities in Nigeria and I had to read up on their histories too.
Seun thanks for creating this forum. It has been an avenue for youths to air their opinion freely, demand better governance and forge a better country for ourselves. Even the ethnic jabs is forcing all parties to have mutual respect for ourselves despite all the animosities and probably collaborate to achieve an objective of a better country.
I am specially hailing Katsumoto, Dayokanu, Desola, Chino, Abagworo, Shymexx, Duru1, Dede1 AndreUwe, Fulanmania, Aresa, OrlandoOwoh, Ijakumo, Modath, Soundking, Sunnybobo, Anonimi, StBlack, StOla, arewafederation, AareOnakakanfo, cheruv, debosky, PenSniper, eggheaders, oduastates, Ngwakwe, EzeNri, dearpreye, dozzybaba (mad-dest boy on NL), VICTORCIZA, OPCNairailand, NgeneUkwenu, idupaul, MayorofLagos, T9sky, Rhino5dm, Jason123 Deridegull, IlekeHD, ACM10, raumdeuter, odenigboaroli, 9jacrip, Aigbofa, Beaf, Passingshot, nduchucks, Iyangbali, fiiznation, Firefire, Omenka, Orikinla, Anonimi, Aljarem, Berem, ijawmilitant, EasternActivist, Babyosisi, JAckBaueress1, Freeglobe, ANAMBRAII, tupacshakur, Zimoni, demdem, kobojunkie, fstranger, barcanista or is it Tonyebarcanista, ezeagu, obiagu1, basilo101, tonychristopher etc You contributed immensely in making NL a vibrant social forum it is today, most especially the Politics section.
Nowenuse: Why would you say such a thing?Where were you when middlebelters/northern minorities gave GEJ the votes of 7 states in 2011 election? More than the yorubas who are your fellow Southerners.
What about in 2015 when only 1 yoruba state voted GEJ while Plateau, Nasarawa and Taraba voted GEJ.
We have always supported Southern leaders in most cases more than even the Southerners themselves.
Thank you, o! If I talk now, some people go vex....
gberra: sometimes when I see these small small boys & girls dey argue with you & call you names, I just laugh & waka pass. . Anybody dey insult anybody now. Stupidity ti take over
simplycarro: People like Jarus couldn't take it, they left. I miss this guy too Stola
Jarus is more of a silent reader, these days. He contributes on a thread like once a year! I really miss Katsumoto, Terracotta, Dayokanu, Rossike, Toshman, almondjoy, Ndipe, Sienna, K0be, Imani, ThiefOfHearts, DisGuy, Onos, denex, Debosky, Chxta, Sijien, Texazzpete, Jakumo etc. Unfortunately, most of them have deactivated their user IDs. I can't say that I blame them. NL is no longer as interesting as it used to be. We all used to disagree, but it was done quite respectfully. But the mods have not been fair to the veterans, though... There was a time I took a long break of about 4 years from NL, only to come back much later. I'm thinking of doing the same thing again..
gberra: Baba laudate you're one of the very few veterans still much active till date alongside anonimi, pazienza (who had been promoting tribalism for a very long time), OAM4J among others. I used to be a guest at the time as my studies wouldn't afford me such luxury. I would later register in 2014, deactivate & re register in 2015 after which I opted for this new moniker strictly for the naughty skulls. You always do have my respect, your contribution speak for itself.
Hehehe.... una no go kill person with laugh for here!
simplycarro: Hhahahahhaha Madam, I was a guest on NL then, you need to do a lot of reading and research to contribute back then. It was from them I got the link to omogui's book.
smileyoo: its supprising how the core north always make use of the middle belt to get to power, only for them to dump them. now that the middle belt is facing serious security challenges, why must the core north be silent over their plights? infact the core northern elements are the perpetrators of those security bleach, hence the ugly silence. middle belt forget politics & wake up to reality. i rather prefer a friend that cares for me & value my friendship than a brother that slaugthers my people even the kids at the slightest provocation. if u must align with the north, pls negotiate a better deal with them. stop being a used & dumped region.
How can you say "stop being a used & dumped region?" What kind of language is this? What if the people of that area start saying things like - "It is your own region that will be used and dumped?" Will you be glad? Did anyone tell you that the Middle-Belt is looking to the core north for help? They stopped doing that a long time ago.
simplycarro: TonyeBarcanista so you've been voting against NL interest all along in the poll. I still long for the era of Katsumoto on NL .
Wait, first....what was your former name in your previous life on NL? Katsumoto stopped contributing a long while back, and for you to have known about him, you must have been one of the veterans on NL.
Priceless200: Please I need to watch just this episode. As Raghav did that thing that day, I got so annoyed I didn't wanna watch the series again. Any link where I can watch this episode online abeg..?
Hey people! heard 'The VOW 2' is coming back. Who's waiting for it like me..?
Well, you can watch it on YouTube. Unfortunately, the dialogue is in Hindi, not English so you may not understand the whole story, unless you can get a written update or a translator.
blackpanda: Why?? because we refused to support u Igbo's Thanks but we will make our decision on our own. We support who is best for us, regardless of bias
I don talk say I no go laugh today, but...!
Candyrain: Actually I don't care who u as an individual choose to support or not but from the OP, the MB are waking up
In terms of leadership, the top 5 states with the most useless governors ought to come from my zone, the Middle Belt.
Government in states such as Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, and Benue leave so much to be desired.
I always thought underdevelopment is the other name for my state, Plateau, but whenever I go to these states, I weep.
My region is fu#ked up. Big time!
Smart, intelligent, good-natured, and hardworking people being led by goats. Our leaders don't know the first thing about development.
I have said it before, that whole region needs divine intervention. It is too early to start causing lamentations on this board. My guy, stop dis, nah. But first remove Nassarawa from that list o! Don't you think they are still better off than Kogi?
dominique: She had her first child at the age of 17, is that your definition of role model?
Yes, but she learnt from her mistakes, went back to school and made something of herself. That daughter she had at the age of 17, is now a respectable, married woman. I really admire Ireti Doyle for turning her life around.
igbodefender: Nairaland is a discussion forum were ideas are brought out proven to be true or debunked with valid facts not abuse and trolling. Quit the abuse and trolling.
Haba, na you get the Ph.D for trolling and abuse for dis side. You sef check am, nah. You really should learn to take your own advice. Or do you want me to cut & paste all the nasty epithets you have churned out on this thread?
hijodedios: Drivers getting into a roundabout are supposed to give way to those already circulating in the roundabout, but not in nigeria, its the other way round, its very annoying.
You forgot to add: other motorists that 'trafficate' and immediately shunt into your lane, almost colliding with your car. They do not even bother to stop and wait, to see if the road is clear for them to change lanes or not. They seem to think that immediately they have switched on their trafficator, it gives them a license to move or change lanes within a split second! Animals!
