I honestly wish oil prices can remain low for a long period of time, cos as soon as it starts picking up, the Government will shift focus on diversification again and concentrate in oil (easy cheap money). Reccession looks like a blessing in disguise to me, every one have been prudent in spending and havr stopped living the cosmetic lives we were living before now. Is this what you call a solution? The high price of gas being faced by the manufacturers should continue, until you stop being a mono product economy? In which year will this happen? Kindly enlighten us. You have been asked for a concrete solution to the problems that manufacturers are facing now, due to high gas prices... and you can only recycle the puerile kindergarten lines that govt appointees trot out, whenever this issue comes up! The Ika we speak today is not the Ika of 5 decades ago. They are native Igbos in all SS states. Nah... you are the one that needs to shut up!! So in your ignorant mind, everyone who speaks fluent Igbo is from Igbo land? Your cluelessness has no equal. Read her life history below and stop peddling falsehood. Diezani Allison-Madueke, nee Agama, born into a royal and wealthy family in the Epie clan from Yenaka community in Yenegoa local government area of Bayelsa State, lived up to that reputation of royalty, luxuriating in opulence fit only for a princess as she bestrode the corridors of Nigeria’s power house, Aso Rock Villa under former President Jonathan.
She was born on December 6, 1960, three months after Nigeria’s independence from British colonial rule, Diezani’s father, His Royal Majesty, King Frederick Abiye Agama was among the first set of Ijaw leaders to study abroad at the revered University of Southampton where he studied Economics. A highly respected First Class Ruler, Agama was one of first set of few Nigerians that were members of the management staff of Shell Petroleum Development Company ( SPDC).
It was, therefore, little wonder that the young Diezani, the third of six children had the best of childhood in the oil-rich Niger Delta region where they were one of the first set of Black kids to have access to the swimming pool at Shell club, Port Harcourt.
In 1977 after her ‘A’ level, she left first for the United Kingdom and later Howard University in the United States where she studied Architecture.
Having studied Architecture in England and then at Howard University in the United States, Diezani graduated from Howard with a Bachelor’s degree on 8 December 1992. She returned to Nigeria and joined Shell Petroleum Development Corporation that year. Getting a job in Shell wasn’t difficult for her like the underprivileged children of other people. Her father’s position in the oil giant was said to have made it easy for her to get a job there without joining the usual queue.
In 2002, she attended Cambridge University for her MBA. In April 2006, Shell appointed her its first female Executive Director in Nigeria. She became the first female President of OPEC, elected at the 166th OPEC Ordinary meeting in Vienna on 27 November 2014.
She was named Nigeria’s minister of transportation on 26 July 2007 by the late President Yar’Adua as the only ministerial nominee of the then Vice President Goodluck Jonathan and thereafter moved to Mines and Steel Development in 2008, and in April 2010 was appointed Minister of Petroleum Resources after Jonathan became the substantive President following the death of Yar’Adua.
Allison-Madueke studied architecture in Washington D.C. before returning to Nigeria in 1992 to work for her father’s old employer -Shell. Over the next 15 years she rose to become Shell’s first female director in Nigeria, completing an MBA at Cambridge University along the way, before she was appointed minister in 2007.
When she married the retired Naval Chief, Admiral Alison Madueke who had lost his wife three years previously in a medical operation,, she inherited five grown up children from Allison Madueke’s first marriage until she had her own child, Chimezie in 2001. http://www.africansuccess.org/visuFiche.php?id=1006&lang=en |

Politics › Re: Lagos Recorded As An Important Yoruba Commercial City In The 1800s by laudate: 2:12am On Jan 08, 2017 |
There is an interesting book written about Lagos titled POSSESSED, and the author is the former Attorney-General of Lagos State, Olasupo Shasore. Even though I have lived in Lagos for many years, I guess I still do not know enough about the city. Shasore's book contains interesting aspects about the city of Lagos, from its history down to its political antecedents from the 19th to the 20th Century. When you have read Olasupo Shasore’s Possessed – A History of Law and Justice in the Crown Colony of Lagos, 1861-1906, you would no longer be in doubt regarding the special status of Lagos within the Nigerian context.
While it has never been in question that the Kingdom of Lagos by far predates modern-day Nigeria, it has perhaps never before come out so glaringly that Lagos was indeed an independent, sovereign nation-state before the British invasion and bombardment of 1851, more than half a century before the term Nigeria was coined by Flora Shaw.
To do justice to the subject matter, the author divides the book into eight chapters, namely, The Lagos Kingdom in the Law Courts, 26 Upper King Street – Legal and Traditional Settings, Bombardment and War on Lagos 1851, The 19th Century Treaties, To Do Justice to this Place – Legal History, Challenge To Authority – The Eleko, Land and Property Ownership, and The Sun Sets on The Colony of Lagos. He goes further to add an ‘Afterword’ and ‘Appendices’ as well as reproduce pictures and documents that not only embellish the work but also aid the reader’s understanding of facts.
The beauty of Shasore’s account lies essentially in its close attention to detail – no detail is too minute to escape the thorough researcher in him. The author records that by 1850, Lagos had an estimated population of 30,000 people who predominantly spoke the Oyo dialect of what was to be later widely referred to as Yoruba. The small port city-state was a monarchy ruled by the Ologun (or possibly Eleko or later Oba), and its political power structure rested on this dynastic line, a line that had by this time been in continuous rule for over 200 years. And so, Lagos is not a ‘no man’s land’, and to continue to bandy such falsehood reflects “poor learning, ignorance and mischief”.
The contribution of Lagos to the making of modern Nigeria comes out clearly in Possessed. Having severed itself from the Benin Kingdom and asserted its independence by discontinuing the payment of tributes to the Oba at Benin, and having by this time acquired great prominence and wealth, Lagos proved too powerful to be challenged by any local authority. It took only the superior naval power of Britain to subdue Lagos, but not without stiff resistance from the Lagos Africans.
The British bombarded Lagos in 1851, and in 1861 took active possession of the island city-state with the fraud called the Treaty of Cession of 1861. With the establishment of formal authority, it became, effectively, The Crown Colony of Lagos, “with a flag, its own constitution, government and subjects, some 53 years before the establishment of Nigeria”.
The need to harness the resources of Lagos would in 1906 lead to its forced amalgamation with the Southern Protectorate, and in 1914, the absence of funds to run the Northern Protectorate necessitated the creation of Nigeria through amalgamation in order, it would appear, to run the whole country with resources from Lagos.
So, whether in the pre-colonial, colonial or post-colonial era, Lagos played – and continues to play – “a prominent, inevitable, eminent role” in West African trade and society as well as in the making of modern Nigeria. As Shasore argues, “Without Lagos and the events that led to intervention in its internal affairs, the entire atmosphere for amalgamation may not have been contrived. In some ways, Lagos is the mother city. http://naija247news.com/2014/10/book-reviewpossessed-a-history-of-law-and-justice-in-the-crown-colony-of-lagos-1861-1906/ |

Have u conducted any research to scertain that Igbo cultural influence did not survive or thrive, yet u claim Bini influence on igbo? This is a double edge sword.(speaking from both ends of your mouth without the middle part.)
It is very good u use the word Ghato, it is even more igbo and it mean "will be stuck" in igbo. I hope u know that word Ise means exactly the same thing in Bini as it does in Igbo?
Kpere is a yoruba word. it points to longevity. Guy, just hold it right there! 'Ghato' may be a word that exists in Igbo language, but it does not mean the same thing in Bini language!! Would the Bini use a word that means "will be stuck," in their salutation to the king? Ise means 'Amen,' and is also widely used among several ethnic groups in the Niger-Delta, not just by the Igbo. If Bini descended from the Igbo, then Igbo cultural influence would have existed among the Bini, and it would be quite obvious to third parties, especially when it comes to customs, traditions, names, traditional music, marriage rites etc. |
