@Iansweet, OmoIgala & Revolva:

Here is another viewpoint.

Kogi/Enugu Crisis: Things Have Gone Wrong In So Many Ways – Unekwuojo O. | News | October 8, 2014

My town Ette is a District in Olamaboro Local Government Area. We have both Igalas, Idoma and some Igbo residing in Ette.

Ette is predominately Igalas. And in Ette we have nine Clans, which are:

Ogodo

Emenebe

Ebe

Enodaba

Obida

Ochigide

Aishi

Adope, and

Achanya.

Ette is closer to Enugu State than Kogi State, we share boundary and even inter marry. That make the young generation of Ette youth to think we belong to Eungu state.

Things have gone wrong in so many ways. Our elder statesmen in Ette fought for Ette to be recognised with the Kogi people, last year the ATTA OF IGALA crowned our King in Ette in person of, His Royal Majesty Aaron Akor. Peace came back to Ette , Ette sons and daughters celebrated the joining of their kiths and kins in Kogi. It was indeed a day of Celebration.

But right now the story is different. Some Ette youth have been brain-washed to turn against their people. They are killing and burning properties of Ette sons. This is really sad.

These misguided youth are engineered to do this by some bad eggs in the community . Giving them money and arms to fight their people all because they want to go back to Enugu State. The likes of John Amedu and Emmanuel Alachi and others are the ones hurting Ette .

The Government of Kogi State should do something about this before it turn into something else.

Here is another view. The article cited earlier by OmoIgala shows the proportion of people that identify with Igala, Idoma & Igbo.

@ Iansweet, OmoIgala & Revolva:

Here is another article from the same Vanguard Newspaper about Ette community, that was written in 2011. Are there two different Ette communities? Is there an Ette community in Kogi State, and is there a separate Ette community in Enugu state?

Kindly confirm. undecided

VANGUARD: ... We’re not part of Enugu State – Ette community By George Onah Port Harcourt ON MAY 3, 2011 | 12:37 | NEWS | COMMENTS

The leadership of Ette community in Olamaboro local government area of Kogi State has rejected newspaper publications that it belongs to Igbo-Eze North local government of Enugu State.

The reaction is sequel to the destruction that greeted the Igala-speaking community after a politician, Mr. Tony Ogidi, was declared winner as candidate for Igbo-Eze North, to represent Ette community in Enugu State House of Assembly rather than Kogi State.

In a 14-page document made available to Vanguard in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, from Crownfield Solicitors, the group said: “Ette community is not and has never been a community in Enugu State.

“The fielding of Tony Ogidi, who claims Ette as his origin by the Enugu State political and administrative hierarchy as candidate for Igbo-Eze North 11 constituency in Enugu State House of Assembly is not only tendentious, but also an exercise in mischief making.

“We are equally at sea where the publication got the figure of 200 as voters in the community, when it is well known that members of the community did not register in Enugu State as they voted their leaders in Kogi State during the elections.” Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/05/were-not-part-of-enugu-state-ette-community/

Lol!

AkinEgba, AkinPhysicist, Laudate. You bore me.

An objective report in Vanguard is a small report, but those given by Igalas minorities who are dragging Ette are big reports? Hehe!

I mean, how can anybody take the opinions of Igalas on this issue as an objective one? It takes a treacherous Afonja like you to do such. What were you expecting Igalas in Ette and those in Kogi to say? That they are minorities in Etteh:-/

Lordlexy is an indigene of Ette, his opinion on the issue weights more than those of Igalas from Kogi and Edo here. That very much is rational.

What flaws in my line of thought? I had provided rebuttals to all iansweet, Omo Igala, Revolva relevant posts and arguments here, using relevant examples when necessary, neutral folks here can see that easily. So I wonder where you are manufacturing your own flaws.

AkinEgba you can whine as much as you want, but the fact is that your Afonja self have been busted and the more you drag it on, the more you make public disgrace of yourself.
I knew you would respond with more inanities and dig yourself deeper into the pit of falsehood and deceit with your rejoinder. The only person that has succeeded in making a public spectacle & disgracing himself, is YOU!! sad The Vanguard article does NOT even mention which group is in the majority, and which one is a minority, so how did you reach your own conclusion?

You are Anioma yet you often speak for larger Igbo groups and other Nd'Igbo communities that are not even located near your own hometown.

But you feel OmoIgala, Iansweet & Revolva who are bona-fide Igala indigenes have no right to make comments about an Igala community like Ette? huh shocked Do you see how hypocritical your stance is?

PS: I still don't know what you hope to gain by calling me an Afonja, when I have nothing in common with his people. Should I remind you that there are over 150 ethnic groups in Nigeria? Or let me guess... you flunked history in high school, so there is no way you would know this little bit of information. cheesy

Well, this is utter bullcrap. The 3 people you have been harping on their word of mouth accounts are not objective. If you went to school then you should have known that in research you only go for verifiable sources of evidence and not for word of mouth, which tends to be subjective.

In the light of that, ALL articles online mention the Ette community to be Idoma and Igbo majority and Igalas a minority. Why you choose to go with biased accounts of 3 monikers on nairaland who are pro-Igala is quite baffling and indicates your level of reasoning and objectivity.

Moreover, it is clear you have nothing intellectual anymore to contribute to this thread. If that's the case, then please bounce.
Which articles state that the Igbo are in the majority in Ette community? Provide the source/url. When was a census conducted in that area to determine this? huh

bigfrancis21:
You are the one making extraneous meanings out of the article. The article does not point out, neither that the town is Igala. It clearly said '...some of the indigenes who are Igalas...' These Igalas could be settlers as well, as we all know their tendency to flee Igala land and settle in Igbo land, a migratory pattern starting since the 1700s or beyond. It does confirm Ette to be Igbo-speaking as there are 'Igbo-speaking sections' of the town. Those who believe they are Igalas of the town have failed in dragging the entire Ette into Kogi state. Honestly speaking, how can less than 1/3rd of the people of Ette, who are not even the majority, seek to drag an entire town into Kogi state against the wish of the majority people -Idoma and Igbo due to selfish political reasons? Who are the land grabbers in this scenario now?

Well, they have failed. Ette will continue to remain in Enugu state. The idomas there prefer to remain in Enugu state where they are more welcome than in Kogi state. Igala attempts to grab Ette land have failed.
Where did you get the info that the pro-Kogi part of the community is only 1/3 of the state? shocked Three languages were mentioned. Details of the ancestry of the entire Ette community was not even stated. The population of each group was not even stated. I am yet to hear that a census was conducted in that area, and you have already jumped to the conclusion that the one group is 1/3 of the population.

You also stated that the article confirms Ette to be Igbo-speaking as there are 'Igbo-speaking sections' of the town. Point of correction. The article says there is an Igbo-speaking part of the town. It does NOT say the entire town is Igbo-speaking.
Culture › Re: Igbo Speaking Communities In Kogi State by laudate: 7:30pm On Nov 06, 2016
This is the Vanguard article dated 10/7/2012 which Pazienza a.k.a Igboid has been basing his flawed arguments upon, trying to label Ette primarily as an Igbo community. The article does NOT state that the community has an Igbo ancestry.

It merely acknowledges that 3 languages (Igala, Idoma & Igbo) are spoken in the town. It says there is an Igbo speaking part of the town, which could be an enclave of migrants or settlers. It does not even say they are indigenes. The report does not provide conclusive evidence in this regard.

It does NOT say that the traditional rulers or custodians of culture in the community are Igbo.

It does NOT say which group has greatest numerical strength in terms of population within the town.

Yet, Pazienza a.k.a Igboid is relying on this article as his sole authority on the ancestry of the Ette community, as well as the words of one of his friends, LordLexy. Wonders shall never end! cheesy

VANGUARD: Communal clash: Enugu closes schools ON JULY 10, 2012 | 1:15 | NEWS COMMENTS BY CYRIL OZOR NSUKKA —

Enugu State government has closed down about 16 primary and one secondary schools, as well government offices, including the local government secretariat in Ette, a border community with Kogi and Benue States following disturbances by some of the indigenes agitating to be merged with Kogi State. According to sources, the area which is in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of the state was populated by Igbo, Idoma and Igalla communities who had been inter-marrying for ages.

An indigene of Etteh, Mr Tony Ogidi is cuurently representing the Igboeze North 11 Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly. However, the agitation by a section of the community to be merged with Kogi State started sometime in 1980, during the administration of Chief Jim Nwobodo as governor of old Anambra State, just as the Igbo speaking part of the area had been opposing them, insisting that merging them with Kogi State would put them in minority.

Sources told Vanguard that the matter which had defied political solution was thrown out by the Supreme Court on February 8, 2007 for lack of jurisdiction. The court in its ruling read by the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Alloysius Katsina-Alu stated that it was the duty of the National Boundary Commission to delineate boundary between Enugu and Kogi States, prompting the commission to the visit the disputed areas about two years ago. Other members of the panel which sat on the case at the Supreme Court included Justices Umaru Kalgo, Mahmood Mohammed, Walter Samuel Onnoghen, Francis Talba and Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed.

It was not known if the boundary commission had made the demarcation but the matter was alleged to have degenerated during the last national census when some youths prevented officials of the National Population Commission, NPC, from coming to the area throughout the exercise. However, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, were chased away from some parts of Etteh during the registration of eligible voters by those protesting the inclusion of Etteh in Enugu State, resulting in the inability of some voters to be registered.

An official of the Enugu State government who spoke on the issue on the condition of anonymity said, ‘’it is true that Etteh community is under siege by pro-Kogi youths in the area. Though Etteh has always been a flash point in Enugu State, the situation worsened as pro-Kogi youths of Ette, possibly aided by the Kogi State government, sacked all Enugu State Government’s institutions at Etteh, including the Igboeze North West Development Centre secretariat, a magistrate court, the education authority, and all about chased teachers in about 16 primary and one secondary schools out of their area. ’’

During the last WAEC/NECO examinations, candidates who registered in Ette were moved to the neighbouring schools at Umuopu, Umuogbo and Aji as happened during the last general house of assembly election which was won by an indigene of the area, based on the zoning polical offices in Igboeeze North 11 Constituency (Umunana). Meanwhile, the work on the Nsukka – Ibagwa Aka- Enugu Ezike – Ette road, awarded by the Enugu State government to link the area with Ogugu in Kogi State had been stopped at the Etteh end of the road by youths who had threatened the contractors handling the project if they attempted to entre their area.

What facts to discuss again in this discussion?
Discussion had since ran its natural course when you walked in here with your Afonjaic vituperation to make mockery of yourself.

Ette had since been established as an Idoma dominant town where the Igbos run a distant second and the violent Igala third.
Vanguard a national daily had supported this,?and an Ette native on nairaland corroborated it.

But nah, you want me to take the account of Igalas in Ette and those in Edo( Revolva) and Kogi( OmoIgala and iansweet) so that you can continue your Afonjaic masturbation.

Ofcourse I refused and here we are.

You had been peeping into this thread with your AkinEgba handle, but when you felt the Igala contingents were losing as they should, you logged in here with your laudate handle, with which you can claim unconcerned neutral party to prop up and cheer up the Igalas, any thing to get to Omo Ibos right? grin

Then you resorted to wailing all over the thread talking about sound facts and falsehoods, when you AkinEgba are an epitome of falsehood with your chameleon laudate handle.

Get away you! You stink.
The flaws in your line of reasoning have been pointed out repeatedly, but here you are still wallowing in deceit, thinking you can hoodwink everyone with your half-truths. 3 Igala indigenes (i.e. OmoIgala, Iansweet, Revolva) have confirmed that Ette is an Igala community with Igala ancestry, and OmoIgala even provided links to an online source to corroborate his stand. undecided

You have rejected all their comments and evidence, in favour of an unsubstantiated post made by one lordlexy, (who you believe is the sole spokesman of the Ette community, going by the way you have been brandishing his flawed perspective) and a small report in Vanguard. Wise men bow to superior evidence, when it shows that their earlier train of thought is incorrect. But we all know you lack wisdom, that is why you have taken refuge in falsehood and tagging others with names they do not bear. cheesy

It shows in the way you have been trying to pin the identity of a different NL member on me, without any success. The people of Akoko Edo are very fragmented, just like the peoples of Akoko proper. Almost every town have different languages and dialects, but speak Yoruba as a general language. And it is not for trading with Yoruba people but rather, trading and relating with themselves..
Between Isua Akoko (Ondo state) and Ogori Magongo (Kogi state) for example, you might come across up to 20 languages and dialects, how else are they supposed to communicate with one another.

Culturallly speaking the area is at the boundary where yoruba-Edo and Ebira meet, and the people themselves are a mixture of all three, with Yoruba ancestry being dominant.
TonySpike:
Ibillo is part of the greater Akokoland, although politically they are Akoko-Edos. Yoruba culture is predominant in this area and a dialect of Yoruba language is officially spoken in this area. So, it is logical to categorise them as part of the Yoruba commonwealth.

U are not idoma and i dont think u have the right to speak on behalf of idomas.
Idomas and Igalas are brothers, the issue would be very well settled by Middlebelt elders when the need arises, just that people dont see this as a big issue now.
There are idoma speakers in Kogi as well as Igala speakers in Benue due to boundary misadjustments. The igbo migrants in Ette town are just hiding under Idoma umbrella to make it look like the town does not want to join Kogi.
Igalas and idomas are used to each other, we were together in old Benue state for decades b4 Kogi creation.

The traditional leaders and titles of Ette town are all Igalas and in Igala, that shows who actually owns the towns
You have just spoilt the market for all the land-grabbing IPODs that want to annex other towns into their enclave, by all means!! cheesy cool

And so have you! wink You are a very interesting chap! grin

That's my point, ede and oye are spelled and pronounced differently. I don't know why that is hard for you to understand. Igala as a language has a lot of similarities with Idoma, itsekiri, and Yoruba(Iyaji) as they are popularly called in igalaland. The fact that most words in igala are almost the same with Yoruba, like counting of 123 or come and eat and so on speak volumes of tolerance and accommodation of the igala ethnic group. More so, in your previous comments, the upland Igala's doesn't share any ancestral lineage therefore, they shouldn't be any igbo's words in their language but the say market name Is the all over igalaland. In my conclusion, the mentioned market name is an igala name borrowed by the igbo speaking speaking people of Nigeria.
May you live long! But you have just spoilt the fun of those trying to annex Igala border communities into their proposed republic by force! cheesy

Here is a post from lordlexyy, an Etteh indigene.

Notice that he correctly ranked the ethnic composition of Ette as follows: 1, Idoma, 2 Igala, 3 Igbo.

Why exactly Igalas native to Kogi and non Igbos are tearing their pants over Ette is what I don't understand.
Ok, now we get it! Lord Lexy is the SOLE authority on the origin of the Ette people - a community whose population runs into several hundreds of thousands. Even their traditional ruler knows nothing about the origin of his people. LWKMD! cheesy

I have come to understand some people from Delta, Isoko, Urhobo...people from Kogi and Akwaibom share alot with the Igbo people>>THere is every tendency that 97% of them are igbo in maybe last 3 generations before now... Looking at them closely u call them igbo only for them to prove you wrong with their language.

I personally have been studying people now at my place of business, inshort whenever i come across people almost every day, i do ask them where they are from, but looking at the Igalas and URbobos and issokos, i tend to believe they are igbos until intentionally speaks igbo to them. it marvels that by facial identification they are 100% igbo but something just got wrong when it comes to language...

Alot happened after the Biafran war, alot, something tells me most of this confusion started when the NIgerian army terminated most of igbos from their ancestral ground thereby allowing close regions to claim this Lands.
Oga, abeg go back to school, o! sad How can you say 97% of some people from Delta, Isoko, Urhobo...people from Kogi etc., are Igbo?? shocked This is blasphemy of the highest order!! shocked In fact, it is heresy.

Who are the 'some people,' you are referring to? Why can't you be explicit? I don't know about Akwa Ibom, so I will not say anything about them.

As I dey observe, na so I dey laugh. grin Can you imagine a community speaking 3 languages fluently (i.e. Igala, Idoma & Igbo) and one outsider is deciding for them that Igbo is their primary language??

I have seen many Naija kids in Lagos, whose parents are full-fledged Nigerians o, bearing names like James, John, Rebecca etc., and speaking English like a parrot. Majority of these children cannot even understand their native language. Well, does that make them English?? According to some people, these kids should be classified as pure Oyinbos, no shaking! cheesy

An empire is not and can never be the only reason why a neighbouring tribe may adopt the language of her neighbours, far from it!

I am a student of history, so i have studied many ethnic groups in Nigeria and all over the world and i have seen cases where neighbouring tribes pick up each other's language without an empire or kingdom being involved. So, saying because igbo land never had an empire is a reason why anybody who speaks igbo today must be igbo is very very wrong. Ethnicity to a large extent today should be based on choice.
Germans, Austrians and majority of Swiss people speak German, but they choose to maintain different ethnic identities. The Portuguese and Spanish are practically the same people who speak a similar language and have same origin and cultures but they chose to identify differently, even the Catalonians and Galicians who are of Spanish nationality reject being labelled ethnically spanish.

There are Igala indigenes in Benue and many of these igalas speak idoma too, at the peripheral areas they speak each others language.

I have a friend who is Esan by tribe from Edo state but her people speak Ika as their mother's tongue. I made inquiries about that town and i found out that these Esan people were influenced by their Ika neighbours (Agbor) and their Esan language has now been replaced by Ika and only the elders still speak Esan, the younger ones have switched to Ika but the people's culture remain primarily Esan, can we now say that these people are Ikas or Igbos?

Most Plateau and Borno state people speak Hausa fluently and some of them are even dropping their languages for Hausa, but neither Hausas nor fulanis ever conquered Plateau or Borno people.

Yorubas never conquered or ruled Nupes, Baribas, Ogori magongo or Akoko edo at any point in time in history but many of these people speak yoruba in their homelands even more than their own native languages.

Calabar people never had an empire but many of their neighbours to the north in cross river still understand Efik. There are many more instances of these in Nigeria and the world over. Larger or more influential languages will always influence or even displace the smaller ones with or without the presence of an empire. Cultures too can also be shared.

Talking about market days (similar culture), Igalas and Idomas share the same market days with igbos, i guess this has made us igbos. Baseless.
Honestly, I feel like dashing you one bottle of my most expensive cocktail for this superb analysis you have posted here. You are too much. No, you are three much! Collect one high-five, jare. cool

You see the issue with many online articles is that they do not tell the story in full most times or they fail to portray the actual situation on ground. Many give hasty news also. For example, the olumbanasaa villages in Anambra north, an isolated island on the side of the anambra river that falls in Anambra state. Many articles you find online describe them as 'the 7 Igala speaking villages of Anambra state', and from reading the articles one would think that they speak only Igala however in reality all of these people speak Igbo fluently and many bear Igbo names as well. However, these factual details are left out in many articles online.

Coming to the Ugbodus/Ilukwobis of Delta state. Many articles would call them the olukwumi-speaking people of Delta state. Again, the impression most people would have is that they speak 'mostly' or 'only' Olukwumi or Olukwumi is their native language. But the actual situation on ground is that everyone, I mean everyone, speaks Igbo as first language from children to adults. Majority bear Igbo names except for recent efforts by a few to adopt Olukwumi names. Then some speak Ilukwobi, who are mostly the adults. In addition, the Ilukwobi they speak has heavy Igbo influence, pronunciation and words adapted into it. The street language in Ugbodu is Igbo. Infact in Ugbodu no Ugbodu person will speak Olukwumi to another person on the street except he/she knows that the other person can speak/understand it because not everyone speaks it but instead Igbo because everybody speaks it in Ugbodu.

Coming back to the Iggas and Ogurugus. These people are not any more different from the Ilukwobis/Olukwumis of Delta state. Igbo is their native language, as evidenced in their native names. Igala is another language many learn to speak while growing up. That's the situation on ground.
I am trying so hard to stop laughing at this post. I know lots of kids with full-fledged Nigerian parents that speak English alone. Does that mean that they are now English men? huh

Sorry, I don't mean to sound rude, but Igbos have no right to Ette community, since it isn't Igboland.
In the latest ethnographic survey of Ette Area, only 5.7% of interviewed residents said they spoke Igbo regularly or took ethic pride in being igbo.
Ette isn't an equally tri linguistic area like u are trying to pant it, Igbos are a minority there.
Ettte is better off in Kogi state. There are already areas in Kogi with the same Igala-Idoma mix, and nobody is complaining.

But in the present Ette in Enugu state structure, katakata everywhere, because it isn't natural.
You have just spoilt some people's day. They have been holding calculators, trying to add up the new territories they will annex into their proposed republic and you just spoilt their fun. Chai! grin

ianSweet:
They are fluently billingual, i have also met people from that axis who speak igala.

https://www.nairaland.com/1256296/why-tussle-over-anambra-oil

In this link, a king from that axis even confirmed that his people are igala speakers (meaning first language speakers). So i really dont get u guys at all.
These people share boundaries with igala and igbo speaking communities. Some speak more of igala while some speak more of igbo, i think it depends on the families involved. But for their king to openly declare his people as igala speaking, we can now b convinced of their true ethnicity.
Don't waste your breath. Even if 10 kings send a confirmation that their people are Igala, they would still refute it because they want to attach other ethnic groups by force, to their proposed republic. cheesy

Bro I only pity these people sha, they keep overstepping boundaries.

This is why I'm anti-migration, migrants will come cap-in-hand n humble seeking aid, trade or asylum but 3/4 generations later their offsprings will be forming "it's our land" lols
Una wan take laugh kill person for here! cheesy Take time, o!

OmoIgala:
Exactly.
Igga, Ojjor, Ogurugu, Adani are all Original Igala towns that have now been labelled "Igbo" because of silly colonial mistakes.
Leave them, nah! wink Some of them are already hyperventilating over the fact that some of these communities speak Igbo as a second language. And so they are trying really hard to change their identity to 'Igbo,' without the permission of such communities, by disregarding their primary language which is Igala. In fact, if they had their way, they would use psychic means to transfer these communities to the South-East. Just keep watching this comedy of errors! cheesy

OmoIgala:
They read this as well.

http://www.ajol.info/index.php/mjas/article/viewFile/118497/108028

That is the actual situation of Ette townships. The people are an Igala-Idoma blend exhibiting native bilingualism. And someonly acquired Igbo as an additional third language due to their status as an Enugu community.

Bros, thanks again for educating them.
cool That is how the guy you responded to, wanted to use half-truths to hoodwink others on this thread. Thank God, you pulled out another article to dispel his claims. Shey, you notice how he went quiet about Ette after your response, and stylishly changed the conversation to something else? tongue
