Just confess that you did not understand my message. There is no crime in admitting you are lost. Ok, I will break it down for you. Many members of your pro-Biafra internet army, have railed against the British and Lord Lugard on several threads on NL. Some have even gone as far as cursing his memory, for lumping Ala'Igbo and other Biafran communities into this entity called Nigeria. Others have stated that the amalgamation of Nigeria is at an end, and so therefore it should be dismembered as the British had no right in the first place, to lump such disparate ethnic groups together in one country. Are you following?? Good. Now those pro-Biafra folks whose followers are rabid haters of Lord Lugard and his ilk, have now gone cap in hand to beg the British to recognise and support their cause, after they have vilified Lugard and his compatriots in cyberspace. It smacks of cowardice, evil intentions, double standards, hypocrisy and a shameful lack of honour to follow this route, when your supporters have taken the British to the cleaners so many times on NL. Hope you catch the drift...?? |

You people are really so funny. Comedians of the highest order. You are the same people who lambasted Lord Lugard for setting up Nigeria. One of your folks called it a 'contraption' and stated that it had expired, after raining insults, curses and vitriol on Lugard for putting different ethnic groups together, inside one country. He even went as far as calling those who believe in Nigeria, 'colonial slaves.' Now, your pro-Biafra people have run to the same country where Lord Lugard was born, to petition his people or his descendants (i.e. including descendants of his compatriots in Britain), to come to their rescue and support their Biafran cause! So all of you decided to write a letter to the British authorities. Una no dey shame?? Chai! Una no go kill person with laugh for here. I mentioned 0.1% as what I believe is a fair charge and as the value the total deduction will have to be to get your 0.05%, and yes, this is a maths class, grab a pen mate
How did 1% ÷ 26 give you 0.05...smh "You have mentioned 0.1% as a fair charge" and so what?? ....Were you one of those who negotiated the transaction fee, or the ratio of who gets what between CBN, the commercial banks and the company, or were you privy to the sharing formula?? You should answer the question yourself, if you know the sharing formula, and the ratio in which the 1% fee would be divided between the firm and the 26 commercial banks. What has been established throughout this thread, is that the 1% fee is not going solely into the pockets of the owners of the Remitta platform. You have decided to split hairs in a petty manner, over a maths equation that is solely known to you. We know you want to flaunt your vanity, by showing off your maths skills. Another thing is that some of the existing project costs for infrastructure etc., are curiously over-bloated. Citizens in communities where such projects are being executed need to be carried along, while others in those communities whose minds have been blinded by greed need to be arrested and prosecuted. A few years ago, Ben Bruce's Silverbird Group launched its television station in the Lekki area of Lagos. The road leading to that TV station around the Jakande housing estate in Ilasan, was initially tarred by the state govt after intense lobbying by Silverbird. Later, the road deteriorated, and Ben Bruce offered to rebuild it from scratch using interlocking paving stones and an enhanced method of road construction. What did the Baale and youths in that community say? They asked that a sum of 20 million should be paid to them first, before that road could be repaired by Ben Bruce & his team. The guy simply relocated his TV station to Victoria Island and abandoned that community road for them. The road is still in a state of disrepair, as we speak! |

Cut down the population of civil service workers by encouraging vocations. Not everyone should be in the Civil service
Encourage entrepreneurship so more private sector jobs can be created. If we lay off government workers through inefficiency, they can move to the private sector and those on the payroll of the Government will reduce
Raise Taxes:Taxes should be raised.Companies should pay more tax. This is where I fault Ogun state
Cut Spending: Increasing tax is not enough, some of these Governors are just wasteful.Patronize local firms because Its cheaper. There's Dantata & Sawoe Construction, there's Costain west Africa.I believe these foreign construction companies are cheating us.Projects that should ordinarily cost $2billion will cost $7billion .Why?[/b] Egbon, I am sorry but I don't believe in increased taxes! All the ones that have been paid so far, have they been properly deployed in a transparent manner to areas of need?? Have they been judiciously utilised? Especially in Lagos?? From what the tax officers say, only 50% of taxable adults in places like Lagos are paying tax. So my suggestion would be to widen the tax net to ensure that the remaining 50% who currently do not pay tax, are made to pay their taxes. Make it easy and comfortable for people to pay their taxes, and let people experience the direct benefits of paying their tax. Don't overburden existing taxpayers. I keep paying tax, but the road that leads to my house is in shambles. I pay Land Use Charge but the amenities in my neighbourhood are virtually zero. I pay vehicle license renewal tax, but I still go through toll gates and am still charged. Half of my taxes are used for massive electioneering campaigns, to elect leaders who would still mismanage taxes I have paid, or who would still ensure that at least 30% of my taxes end up in their private pockets. Shymm3x: Can anyone who has access to the total number of workers in the state ministries across the SW post it here. Let's see how these folks are spending that much on recurrent expenditure.
Let's also see the companies they're operating the PPPs with to know who owns the so-called "private" companies.
Laudate please help us out. Your input is needed. Am so sorry. I saw this before, but I just lost track of it somewhere in between my numerous responses. I will search for data on the total number of workers in state ministries, but that would take a bit of time. I am sure some ministries don't even have accurate figures on the number of workers they have! As for PPP, it is an operational scheme in Lagos, Ogun and a few other places, but it really needs a lot of fine-tuning and monitoring, and there have been instances to show that the states have not been up to par, in their monitoring functions. In Lagos for example, there is the Lagos State Public-Private Partnership Office that implements and monitors PPP projects. The AES Nigeria’s 270 Megawatt (MW) - IPP Project, is reported to be an Independent Power Project (IPP) that operates nine (9) barge-mounted gas turbines, producing 270MW of electricity. On their website it says : AES Nigeria (a subsidiary) of AES USA was the project sponsor responsible for the implementation of the project. US$12million was raised to fund the project from an international consortium of 4 commercial banks and 3 development institutions. The project remains a joint venture between AES and YF Power Nigeria. AES has an option to follow through this project with a 540MW IPP in Marogbo, Badagry. However in reality, AES was implicated in a financial scandal a few years back and the project was grounded. I don't know if it is back on stream now. I need to find out. There is also the Akute Power Project (12.15 Megawatt) - IPP for the Lagos State Water Corporation. The Akute Power Project provides a total capacity of 12.15 MW by using four 3 MW GE Jenbacher gas engines. A 13km natural gas pipeline was connected to the existing natural gas infrastructure. The project cost US$25.5 million and spanned a 12-month construction period. The Power plant commenced operations in December 2009.
Key stakeholders are: Lagos State Water Corporation - Power Off Taker Clarke Energy - EPC Contractor Oando Gas & Power (OGP) - Promoter Finance arranger - OGP NGC/Gaslink - Gas supplier Lagos State Government - Financial guarantor To the best of my knowledge this project is still running, but the total amount spent so far and on-going costs are not fully known. There have been other PPP arrangements in the area of waste collection and disposal, transportation, housing, land use revenue collection etc. You can get more details here: http://www.lagosstateppp.gov.ng/projects/case_studies/transportation/transportation.aspThe construction and tolling of the Lekki-Epe Expressway is another example of a PPP Project. While the1st phase of the road construction was completed in 2012, it has thrown up a lot of controversy and angst especially among the road users. The concession is operated by the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) which has a 30 year contract in place to collect tolls and maintain the roads. The profit sharing formula remains unknown, and the promoters were taken to court by residents along that road at one time. The success of that project led Lagos State to construct a tolled 1.7km bridge linking Lekki to Ikoyi, last year with another company. Parties: I. Lekki Concession Company Ltd (LCC) II. Lagos State Government (LASG) III.Office of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP)
Project Description: The Lagos Infrastructure Project (LIP) is a 30-year concession to design, construct, finance and operate the Concession Area with a view to eliminate the severe traffic gridlock along the expressway corridor.
The Concession Area is in 2 Phases viz:
The expansion and upgrade of the 49.36 km Eti-Osa Lekki-Epe Expressway including the construction of the Falomo Bridge Ramp; and The construction of the 20 km Coastal Road plus an option to develop the Southern Bypass. The project is a user-based toll road with the private party taking on full market risk. Financing will be recovered through charging tolls, advertising fees, duct leases and other defined revenue sources.
Commercial Close: April, 2006 Concession Effective Date: November, 2008 Concession Expiry Date: November, 2038
Financing Structure The LIP is a US$450m Public-Private Partnership transaction real toll road with full market risk. The estimated completion time for the project is 3 years and funding for the project, comes from the following institutions:
Lagos State Government - The State invested N5 billion (US$42m) in a 20-year mezzanine tranche; The African Development Bank - Provided N10 billion (US$85m) senior debt over 15 years; and Local bank lenders - Provided a 12-year note facility of N9.4 billion (US$80m). The banks are: First Bank of Nigeria Plc United Bank for Africa Plc Zenith Bank Plc Diamond Bank Plc Fidelity Bank Plc The remaining term funding was provided by Standard Bank London which became the sole arranger of the US$93m (N11 billion) 15-year international tranche - underwritten by Standard Bank London and Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc Progress Update: Financial Close attained in November 2008 Section 1 (Km 0-6) completed and open to traffic in July 2010 Falomo Bridge On-Ramp opened to traffic on 05.October.2011 Tolling commenced on 18.December.2011 LCC opened TP2 to traffic on 02.March.2012 Section 2 - 4 progressing rapidly The LIP won the 2008 Transport Deal of the Year Award (African Investor) However, construction on the coastal road has not even begun and the tolled Lekki-Epe expressway has not solved the traffic problem on that axis due to its faulty design and lack of overhead bridges to divert traffic at the roundabouts. I'll be back with more info on both projects later. |

Shymm3x: The biggest drum won't boost any tourism right now, till say, 200 years' time. Those going to Osun are more interested in Osun Oshogbo festivals and Ife. Osun is an integral part of most of the Yoruba religions in the new world, from Santeria, to Condombe, to Voodoo etc.. Another god they worship is Yemoya. However, I don't know how the Yemoya worship/festival works and perhaps Osun state can invest in creating a next festival about Yemoya to for tourism and revenue generation purposes.
A thinking governor looking to maximise the interests of tourists in these two gold mines would invest heavily in them and turn them to something similar to the Brazilian carnival and media campaigns in the countries where most of these folks coming to spend money are from. He can also send emissaries to those countries from time to time to boost relations. But this man didn't do that - he just wasted millions of naira on an inconsequential drum like there aren't more than enough things in that state to generate interests. Isn't that the same state where foreign archaeologists are still excavating all kinds of artworks by Yoruba ancestors, buried beneath the earth surface? How about build a museum there for exhibitions from time to time?
Government in today's world is run like a profit-oriented business venture. Once you start running at a loss, you just have cut expenditure, to keep a proper balance sheet - else you'll go bankrupt. That's just common sense. Something just has to give cos the debts are piling up for future generations and folks can't turn a blind eye on them with excuses. I'll leave the civil service alone cos the sector should only make-up a fraction of the recurrent expenditure.
However, in a case where they're not delivering anything and the debt profile keeps growing due to wholesale looting - shouldn't they cut down the looting and do the right thing? Yemoya?? I thought it was Yemoja?? Osun State needs to get its act together in tourism and treat it strictly like a business at the highest levels of governance, in order to earn improved revenue from it. Look at Nairobi, Kenya and Gaborone, Botswana. Right from the international airport, you are given leaflets and flyers highlighting all the tourism attractions in their country, and if you visit the tourism desk right at their airport they will book you a hotel, cab, or bus and hand you over to a registered tour operator that takes you straight to their tourist sites. Of course, you would pay the required fees directly to the tour company, but it is worth it. Their tour operators go out of their way to make your stay comfortable and interesting. There are so many branded souvenirs of high quality at every corner, for you to choose from as holiday gifts. And they do not cost the earth. These countries are actively represented at the World Travel Market and other fairs around the globe that have anything to do with tourism, travel and hospitality. Osun State can learn how they did it, and adapt some of their methods to drive tourism in their state. For example, can't we get hovercrafts and ferries from Lagos State to transport people directly to Osun for the festival, using the waterways?? |

citizenunitedfo: This story stinks to the heaven.
I cannot believe how people are defending the 1% share of people money. It does not matter if shared among one million entities. It is wrong! The federal government can spend less than N10M monthly on this service ball park.
What pains me in this whole story is the fact that the same shameless people are in charge of regulation. Any juicy projects are hijacked by the same people and they will frustrate any innovation by coming up with bogus regulations.
The CBN story about how World Bank was invited to vet the bidders and how system spec was selected is shameful. You can invite John the Baptist from planet Mars to vet. Who cares? If CBN is the one selecting the bidders and REMITA is the baby of Tunde Lemo the former CBN deputy Director, who in his right mind will take any decision made by CBN seriously?
The same CBN that approved this deal is regulating the financial sector with the most thoughtless regulations that is preventing the growth of this sector. Where in the world are businesses expected to run when they can’t charge a fee on ATM or if fees are charged, must be below the cost. Yet they feel it is ok for REMITA to charge 1% of the whole government revenue, but no, other providers must charge a flat fee on fund movement. For your information, if you move N100 or N1B in Nigeria there is a flat fee by Nibss of less than N100. How can this translate into billions for REMITA and the others bleeding people money?
How in the world is government department like CBN with the most unrealistic regulation expects the financial sector to grow beyond relying on sharing government revenue among themselves and call it transaction fee?
I continue to believe that Majority of Nigerians in positions of power are actually of low IQ, they appear smart to an unsuspecting Nigerians, but they are not smart at all. They all get paid salaries from the masses money, contribute nothing of value to the society and then turn against the masses. These are really sick people.
How is this 1% collection of people’s money different from what the politicians did when they delve their hand into the till and bleed the nation? and how can a sane person expect this to last? How can CBN defend such, oh well, they know most Nigerians are gullible.
Any person familiar with fund movement within banks understand how payment system work in Nigeria and that this project should not cost the federal government more than N10M monthly and such contract can be awarded to any company. Their role is NOT to charge a penny, but to manage the technical infrastructure powering the transactions and ensure that funds are collected and channeled to the appropriate accounts
How convenient it is to be charging 1% of a country revenue and you call yourself an innovative company. This is shameful. What invention have you created to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians except steal their money?
The billions been deducted monthly as fee is enough to pay 5 million Nigerians a N5, 000 monthly social security. Do you have an idea what that means for the economy, country? Your savior is among those millions wallowing in poverty and eventually snuffed out.
Few people with analog brains are sharing these billions monthly with inpunity doing practically nothing. What exactly are they doing? Let them put it out and let’s test their claims. Once the system is connected to the infrastructure that matters, the remaining cost is hosting fee and if the hosting company charges electricity and HVAC cost, then calculate how much that will be per month. You can see that this service can be run with N10M maximum monthly and this include 20 staff at least.
Heads must roll. CBN and others must be probed alongside all the people sharing this money. This is wrong and this is coming from somebody who understand the system very well.
If you want to charge per transaction fee, go ahead and compete in the market and let us see how well you fair in the market. A little learning is a dangerous thing. Please educate yourself to know how the 1% was arrived at and the total number of commercial banks as well as the firm that would share that 1% fee. You did not even read through all the posts on this thread, you just jumped in shouting that the whole thing stinks to high heavens. Chai!! See some Nigerians and their narrow-minded, ignorant, myopic sense. |

subnormal: You are getting uour maths all wrong, 1% ÷ 2 is 0.5% each and not 0.05%, you only get that if the processing fee was 0.1% of the transaction which is what I believe should be a fair charge considering the large amounts involved. If the sum is shared by 26 entities as you posted elsewhere, the percentage becomes 0.038% per entity....where did your 0.05% come from sir Guy, I did not pro-rate the fee, so I don't know where your 0.1% is coming from. Go through all the posts on this thread. I had earlier said the company would get 0.5%, if the 1% fee was split between the firm and the commercial banks equally. Another poster had corrected this, and said the amount that was actually due to the firm would be 0.05% as other entities were still involved in the sharing formula. This is not a maths class. |

Ballmer: So because Dino as fed fat as a senator REMITA should be allowed to feed fat on our collective wealth with questioning in Nigeria ? You are asking a question that has been thrashed out and discussed extensively on the preceding pages of this thread. Remitta did not feed fat on anything. They installed a payment processing platform for CBN payments and collections, and different companies participated in a bidding, selection and evaluation process supervised by CBN, the World Bank Project Team and Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, before that job was finally awarded to their company. The contract provided for a 1% fee of the transactions enacted on that platform to be shared by Remitta and all the 26 commercial banks. So what 'feeding fat,' are you referring to?? |

mickey45: I surely read the write-up itself which should be the basis of all positions. I was only stating the grounds on which her taking their refunding money to mean culpability might be possible. Apparently my thinking, the refund might just be "damage control" may not fly either. Seeing they only remitted monies they would be paid later. The "vitrioling" is uncalled for and your point could easily have been less scathingly made, but to each his own. If you are an insider, that gives you some authority on the issue at hand. Doesn't invalidate other "conjectures" as we all have different frames of reference for our opinions
We know all payment platforms have their charges, some institutions push these charges to customers (E-Transact and co.) Others bear it up. CBN is not a third rate organization either so you'd expect best practices in their decisions.
Explains why even if I do not agree with most of Sanusi's marxist leanings, one must still respect his professionalism in that field If you had read all the comments made by respondents on this thread from the first page to the last, you would not have asked the question you did because the facts were explicit and the explanations given, were quite clear. There was no vitriol in my post. Please point it out, chapter and verse so I can address it. I do not thrive on conjecture, or comments that are not supported by facts. And if you understand how payment platforms work, then there really should have been no debate on this subject. Thanks. |
