It has always been the finest prize a person can win, and it always will be so. It is the noblest of all the good qualities a person can have. 3No matter how many children are born of a forbidden union, none of them will ever amount to anything. They are illegitimate; they can never lay a firm foundation for themselves, never take deep root. 4Like trees with shallow roots, they put out leaves for a while, but they sway in the wind, and storms uproot them. 5Their branches snap off before they mature; their fruit never ripens, and it is good for nothing. 6On Judgment Day children born of a forbidden union will testify to the sin of their parents and act as witnesses against them.

Omooba77: Lagos – The Federal Government has finally accepted the notice of retirement of suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, with a decision to pay him his full entitlement.
This is coming against the backdrop of recent overtures being made by the presidency to the retired jurist, urging him to be of assistance to the All Progressives Congress-led government in resolving the election cases the party has in various courts in the land.
Onnoghen, on April 4, sent his notice of retirement to President Muhammadu Buhari following his indictment by the National Judicial Council (NJC) around the same period.
A credible judiciary source who pleaded anonymity told Daily Independent that when the presidency sought the presence of the retired jurist in Abuja, especially after APC lost Zamfara wholesale to the PDP, family members told officials that Onnoghen was in the village in Cross River State since he has no house in Abuja.
The source said presidency officials held two meetings with the family members of the retired jurist where they sought his help over these cases and also agreed to accept his notice of retirement and also give him all his entitlements.
It would be recalled that the NJC had recommended Onnoghen’s compulsory retirement based on a petition brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against him “alleging financial impropriety and infidelity to the constitution”.
https://www.independent.ng/fg-finally-accepts-onnoghens-retirement-to-pay-him-full-benefits/? They are now seeking his help after calling him corrupt, and dragging his name through the mud, and rattling him through the courts?? Are these people normal, at all? |

tactius: Good morning.
If we remove subsidies and price controls in the downstream sector this would happen
1.Foreign investment would flow in now that profits can be made.
2.This stimulates investments in things like refineries and so on
3.Which would eventually bring down fuel prices
4.Money spent on subsidy can be ideal spent on other sectors which need it, such as education, health, even public transportation
5.Need I say that jobs would be created, benefiting rich and poor.
6.Fuel smuggling, claiming subsidy for fuel not imported and importation of fuel would end.
Good morning Sorry sir, I do not agree with you. If you remove subsidy on fuel, cost of goods and services would triple and inflation would kill any attempt at meaningful production. This is because our level of infrastructure is still too poor, to cushion the impact of such subsidy removal. Even the money you think would be saved from subsidy removal, would not be enough to carry out any meaningful venture in other sectors, as inflation would wipe out such an endeavour. And foreign investment cannot be guaranteed even when subsidy is removed. That same hypothesis was used to hoodwink Nigerians when the nation was told to devalue it's currency years ago. What happened?? Investment in the oil sector is not dependent on subsidy being removed. No one compels you to sell your products in the domestic market, after you have invested in the oil sector. You can always export it. Oil is an international commodity. |

Subsidy can be removed, but only temporarily. Once you remove subsidy, it takes a few months for the inflationary effects to be felts by all sectors of the economy. After a while the naira catches up with the inflation, due to excess pressure on the naira and hence the need for subsidy once again. That's has been our cycle since early 70s when petrol was a couple of kobos per litre. Thanks for educating the clueless, my brother. tactius: How fuel subsidies cheat the poor
1. Subsidies prevent companies from making decent profits. As a result, fresh investment does not come in, job creation gets stifled. Poor affected.
2.Millions is spent on feeding subsidy cabals rather than projects for the poor.
3 Lack of investment means that no new refineries can be built which means that prices stay high and importation continues, wasting more money that could have been used for projects that would benefit the poor.
4. Nigeria gets into debt sustaining subsidy, which worsens our bad economy.
When GSM came, there were no price controls. GSM companies charged high prices for SIM cards, meanwhile service was poor. They took their money, invested it in new facilities, prices came down.
Remove price controls. Starve the corruption in NNPC. Starve the subsidy cabals. Allow profits to be made. Then sit back and watch as investors flow in, build more refineries without government paying a dime, and prices fall, more jobs get created and money saved is used for better things.
Subsidy has to go. Since 1993. You cannot use the GSM communication industry, as a comparison with the oil sector. You would be misleading people. Telephone and communication services were never subsidised from inception. The problem was that provision of phone services, was concentrated in the hands of a govt body known as NITEL. Telecom network was restricted, and its services could not be as accessed by majority of the citizenry. All that IBB did, was to liberalise the sector and allow private companies to compete with NITEL and set up their own infrastructure. There was already a lot of pent-up demand for the service. So it took off like a rocket. Later competition came in, and companies like Glo started per second billing which crashed prices. So how can you compare telecoms with the fuel sector?? |

The same poor that complain of buying at 147, how will buying at 250 help them? Help me ask dem, o! People like to recycle illogical statements. If we had an efficient rail system, a well-mapped logistics network and a developed mass transit system as well as good power infrastructure, then it would be easy to say remove fuel subsidy. But under these current conditions of poor mass transit systems and lack of constant power, they just want to multiply the sufferings of Nigerians to infinity, by removing the subsidy. Transport costs will triple and commodity prices will increase. And how will people get affordsble fuel for their small generators, when NEPA/ DISCOs cut off power? |

Blue3k2: I disagree on thie ticket price being too low. My opinion is simply based on fact people can afford the scalpers tickets corrupt NRC employees sell. Then the price for car and train ride similar as stated in article.
I do agree with you on frequency of rides. They're literally leaving money on table. I can see your point about type of trains. They can always purchase some from General Electric or someone. As I remember reading most of these stations are built without connecting to grid in mind they do months after. I doubt them on electric trains.
The advertising revenue isn't anything to write about and down 70% year over year as current stats show. I doubt advertisers are interested judging by this severe decline. Compared to the other sources of income its never been much. I believe ticket prices are not too low. We need to get people off the roads, and into the trains. Making the price too high will defeat the purpose. Advertising revenue in rail stations in Nigeria and even within the coaches, has NOT been explored in Nigeria. So how can you say it is nothing to write home about, when it has not even been tried in Nigeria? Don't use advertising revenue abroad, as a criteria. Advertising on billboards along our major highways, costs millions already. Why can't NRC go after some of that revenue, by opening up their stations to relevant advertisers? NRC does not even have an articulate advertising strategy to attract advertisers, into their network. |

obailala: It weakens me totally whenever I think about it. The govt just took large loans to create a massive liability and Nigerians are smiling and dancing about it. Ticket prices are arbitrarily fixed purely based on political expediency without any economic considerations.
What even baffles me most is how the system is currently running at over 70% loss every month and no one both in and out of government sees anything wrong with this anomaly. Reminds me of the song by Asa, "there is fire on the mountain but nobody seems to be on the run" They are running at 70% loss, because there are too many loopholes within the system. There are cartels run by NRC staff that buy up tickets only to resell at inflated prices. Some of them corner the cash proceeds from ticket sales. How many train stations in Nigeria allow passengers to buy tickets, using their debit cards through POS machines? Very few. I have never seen a POS terminal at Iddo terminus or Ebute-Metta junction. When was the last time you saw a rail advert or notice showing arrival and departure times, in any Nigerian city? Where are the customer service lines, through which prospective passengers can get info on train services? They do not exist. Before advocating that rail fares should be hiked, the loopholes and wasteful sources need to be plugged. |
Politics › Re: The Unsustainable Operation Of Nigeria’s Rail Sectors (11) by laudate: 11:18pm On Jun 03, 2019 |
Blue3k2: Just to add to points above about revenue would be higher if they weren't subsidizing tickets. Check the stats from 2011 to 2019. Nigeria passenger traffic is down over 1 million but revenue is higher. The government should be rushing to add more coaches.
I remember reading alot of these new rail lines didnt even have cargo operations ready. You can notice nigeria is slightly below its high in 2011.
Nigeria has a knack of messing up basics. Lol they literally give free rides for a month everytime they open new rail line. They subsidize oil national ID, and plan to subsize rice. I believe this is partly why we also get poor service delivery. Speaking of delivery why dont they deliver pvc and drivers licenses instead brosdcasting every so often x amount of cards are uncollected. Pls stop this excuse of 'subsidising' tickets. The coaches are NOT even doing enough trips to justify the cost of operations. How can you expect to make money by running only 3 trips per day, to and fro? When they should be doing multiple trips to make money to cover their costs? Also, the NRC should allow passengers to buy rail tickets using their debit cards and through online transfer. Half of the problem, is that sales from tickets are done in cash across the counter , and a lot of it ends up in private pockets. Even if you increase fares, it would not solve the problem. That is why they are recording low revenues. There is too much waste. |
Politics › Re: The Unsustainable Operation Of Nigeria’s Rail Sectors (11) by laudate: 11:14pm On Jun 03, 2019 |
Blue3k2: I like ths series the author wrote. He was very thorough about pointing out flaws in passenger rail lines. I hope they take his advice.
NRC should be raising prices for these tickets. If people can afford these black market tickets that means it's too cheap. NRC should attempt to break even on passenger rail and profit cargo.
They should be concessioning standard guage rails along with narrow gauge lines. If they're affraid of raising prices let concessionaire do it. Alot of the funny business will also disappear. NRC does NOT need to increase the cost of their train tickets, nor do they need to hike the fare. All they need is to increase the frequency of their passenger service. In other countries, the trains depart every hour and arrive on time. In Nigeria, most rail passenger services only run twice or thrice a day. Is that how to make money? What strategies do they have to increase cargo services? Ask NRC. They have none. Train services all over the world, are an affordable and competitive way to transport people and cargo, over long distances. Not only that, they should explore better sources of fuel. Using diesel to power trains is very expensive. The option of using natural gas turbines, or using mini IPP plants providing dedicated electricity to power the trains, could also be explored. Finally, railway advertising is a money spinner in many places. But in Nigeria, NRC has failed woefully to monetise their rail stations and open spaces for advertising purposes. |

YourNemesis: First, I didn't even say muslims were 12.3% in Ekiti I said Mslm/Xtians were 20%/80% give or take~ which is more than fair and gives more than enough room for error, from what that data set suggests. Secondly, I don't see any trend in Ekiti that would suggest otherwise.. i.e that between that time and now, muslims have tripled or rapidly accelerated in Ekiti while the cristians have diminished. From where? Christians are not converting to Islam en-masse in Ekiti. So, unless you are counting Ebira farmers as Ekiti indigenes (of which only a tiny revision would be required) I don't see anyway how. Thirdly, I only posted the table because YOU asked to see it. You probably thought I was making it all up. Now I posted the table, you are recanting.
You keep saying the Muslims are more, but you aren't even quoting ANY figures nor showing any evidence to backup your claims other than words of mouth. I remember that thread that hit FP a while ago when that Ishaq Mumutola guy was spewing his usual religious supporter of APC garbage about Ekiti state, it was Ekiti people themselves that came there to set the records straight. One even went to the extent of saying that most Islamic families within Ekiti after serious scrutiny will in one way or the other be discovered to have some older origin from somewhere outside the state. That might be untrue, but it just goes to show you what some Ekitis think about their state. Oga, please go back and read what I said with some measure of understanding. I never said that you claimed Muslims in Ekiti were 12.3%. The 1963 census results you posted showed clearly in one of the tables, the figure of 12.3%, which I quoted. Secondly your claim of Muslims being 20% based on old census figures and your opinion, would no longer be valid if a proper census were to be conducted today. Muslims practice polygamy based on their 4 wives tradition, which leads to a higher birth rate. Animists and traditionalists have also converted to Islam, the same way some of them have converted to Christianity. The same Ishaq Mumutola guy you quoted who claimed Muslims were 40% in Ekiti, made some comments that generated controversy in the state. You had people coming out to say he was wrong, while there were others who believed the estimates of 40% were right. I have not recanted anything. I still maintain that the population of Muslims in Ekiti is greater than your 20%. Free your mind and do a quick survey of the current situation in Ekiti. Especially during Muslim festivals and fasting period. Then you will see that the 20% ratio that you are still postulating, is no longer valid. |

I do not like talking about religiosity in Yorubaland because I see us all as one, but if you insist (and for the sake of argument)
From these figures, you can probably even tall that the proportion of christians among the Ondos and Ekitis is +80% by now... because the traditionalists have been constantly dropping in favor of the Abrahamic religions. And in Ondo and Ekiti (and even in the west as a whole) that would of course be towards Xtianity and to a much lesser extent, to Islam. Oga, you are relying on 1963 census figures instead of assessing the current situation on ground in those 2 states of Ekiti and Ondo. Nigeria's population has increased tremendously since then, and so have the demographics. The previous 12.3% quoted for the old Ondo province is no longer valid, based on today's reality. |
