PoliticsRe: Why We Upheld The Election Of Okezie Ikpeazu As Abia Governor - Supreme Court by lawrsmith(m): 10:22am On Feb 27, 2016
kcmichael:
The Supreme Court has given reasons behind its earlier verdict setting aside the Judgement of Justice Oyebisi Omoleye led Five member Appeal Court Panel of Justices which sacked Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu.
In an unanimous decision, the panel of Supreme Court justices agreed that the Lower Court erred by declaring the candidate of All Peoples Grand Alliance, Alex Otti the winner of the governorship election .
The panel led by Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed held that the Appellate Court usurped the power of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which is the only organ empowered to cancel polling results.
The court also faults the Lower Court’s reliance on card reader for its judgment.
According to the Apex Court, the card reader machine has no statutory backing in Nigeria’s law and should not be used to determine a winner in any election.
The panel also held that the allegation on voting was not proved as the petitioner failed to tender voter’s register to substantiate his claims.

PoliticsRe: Osinbajo: GEJ, Yar’adua Didn’t Build A Single Road. The Cable. by lawrsmith(m): 10:01am On Feb 27, 2016
Longeria:
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Friday said that the federal government did not build “a single new road” in the last 10 years.

The late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and former President Goodluck Jonathan presided over the country within that period.

Speaking at the pastors and leaders retreat of the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos, Osinbajo said corruption in the country was not caused because by a few individuals, but that the entire system was built around lack of integrity.

He expressed confidence that the country would be great again but noted that the foundation for the greatness had to be laid with a lot of pains.

“Unless we tackle graft, we may not be able to achieve something,” he said.

“The federal government in the past 10 years could not build a single new road, not repairing existing ones alone.

“Now we have a president who will not steal money and who will not allow anybody to steal money.”

Commenting on the N6 billion that the last administration spent on a new residence for the vice-president, he said Aguda House, the current official residence, is up to standard with enough space.

He said the present administration would complete it but consider putting it to other use.

“There is no need for a new vice-president’s house; it is a kind of waste; we are now in a situation where we cannot abandon it; it has to be completed and used for a different thing,” he said.

Osinbajo also spoke on the controversy surrounding the State House Medical Centre, which he said was not only for workers at the state house.

He said it is a general hospital with a lot of facilities that serves all Nigerians, adding that he would prefer that it be further equipped to provide higher medical services to those in need.

Osinbajo debunked insinuation of lack of data in the country, saying that the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics had enormous which had been rated highly by the World Bank and other international agencies.

He said the intention of government was to aggregate the scattered data in INEC, CBN, National Population Census Commission into one by the National Identity Card Management Commission.

Osinbajo also said the education sector lacked not only standards but adequacy of institutions, which has forced Nigerians into sponsoring their children abroad for tertiary education.

He explained that while 1.8 million Nigerians sat for university entrance examination yearly, only about 300,000 were offered admission due to a dearth of universities.

The vice-president revealed plans of the government to convert many of the existing universities into centres of excellence and support the private sector in the running of universities to enable more Nigerians to have access to tertiary education.

Before responding to questions, Osinbajo said that what the country needs is truth and integrity, which the church should spearhead.

“The church is where the truth is; the church has the answer to the nation’s problems; one of the problems of our society is integrity,” he said.

“Nigeria lacks the capacity to get things done, which is difficult to understand, but with God on our side, our country will set the pace for Africa”.

“Our people are ready to do it and they can do it but they are waiting for the right kind of leadership. I know why you are praying for us, and it is because you know that this is a good opportunity to get it right and we don’t want to miss this chance.”

Taiwo Odukoya, senior pastor of the church, asked Christians to continue to pray for the administration as Nigeria has a great future.

PoliticsRe: FG Seeks Abolition Of Visa Requirement Among D-8 Member Countries by lawrsmith(m): 9:32am On Feb 25, 2016
tiwiex:
Bro. I am surprised I never heard about D-8. And i am sure many of us here are guilty. Please google it. Apparently the D-8 countries are categorized as "developing countries and majorly muslims". So, we are in the group not just because we are developing but because we are also majorly muslims. It does not seem we are partnering for trade only based on this definition if you ask me. These countries lack any serious skills we need and they are not financial heavyweights. This is not the time to open our boarders without scrutiny. Something is not right. We as a people need to be more discerning and get a bit more analytical on global issues. The argument on trade and skill is very weak so, what's up?

The idea of cooperation among major Muslim developing countries was mooted by Dr. Necmettin Erbakan, the then Prime Minister of Turkey, during a Seminar on “Cooperation in Development” which was held in Istanbul in October 1996. The group envisioned cooperation among countries stretching from South East Asia to Africa. Representatives from Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria and Pakistan attended the Seminar. This conference was the first step towards the establishment of D-8 and it was only after a series of preparatory meetings that D-8 was set up officially and began its activities with the Istanbul Declaration issued at the end of the summit of Heads of State and Government held in Istanbul on June 15, 1997

who told you that Nigeria is majorly Muslim? go and get your records correct. the population of Christians in Nigeria is more than that of Muslim.

tapread:
The Federal Government has called for the abolition of visa requirement among the members of the Developing Eight (D-cool Countries Organisation for Economic Cooperation to ensure free movement of people and trade.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, made the call when he met with the Secretary General of the organisation, Dr Seyed Ali-Mohammed, on Wednesday, in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the D-8 countries are Nigeria, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan and Turkey.
“One area that I think D8 must to work on and if really they want to succeed, they must make sure that there is no barrier in term of visa among those eight countries.
“You cannot grow any trade talk less of tourism, if I cannot have easy access to Malaysia, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan.
“You can imagine the volume of trade that will develop over night if only you can make sure that if I want to go to Iran that there is bilateral agreement between Nigeria and Iran, between Nigeria and Pakistan and among those eight countries that there will be free movement of people.
“It is free movement of people that will guarantee free movement of trade.
“So, this is one area that I believe that you need to work hard on.’’
Mohammed, who commended the organisation’s focus on tourism development, said the provision of infrastructure was critical to the development of domestic tourism.
According to him, “until you develop domestic tourism, you cannot have international tourism”.
In his remarks, Ali-Mohammed said the purpose of his visit was to intimate the minister about the organisation’s resolve to focus on tourism development as the area of cooperation among member countries.
“The meeting today I am enthusiastic about tourism.
”Very recently, on the proposal of member states, we came to conclusion that tourism or so could be one of our priority areas.’’

Femi Aribisala is an old foool.

If not, how does a sane man canvass for the return of a finance minister who failed woefully in managing bounty harvest to come and mange austere period?

The overhyped economist who couldn't diversify the economy during surplus earnings is the person the lunatic Aribisala is asking us to bring back!

And talking about the revelations in the budget, it is actually a credit to Buhari that we're getting to know the existence of bloated figures contained therein. In the past, the presidency would have done a deal with the NASS such that the budget is not fully discussed to reveal those padding before it's passed. But because we have a president who will not do a deal to shortchange Nigeria, we're able to know how the budget cabals have been stealing us blind.

Yes, the presidency made some mistakes by not being very deligent with the budget, but the fact that heads have rolled and more will still roll for the budget padding is a testament to the president's readiness to take actions to correct mistakes.

To hell with Femi Aribisala and his unpatriotic cohorts.

[quote author=ebosie11 post=43169868]A fresh case of fraud was leveled on the shoulders of Nigeria, this time by American singer and actor, Ginuwine.

Yesterday, the ‘Love You More’ singer warned his over 300,000 Instagram fans, saying he had just learnt that someone was using his photo to trick people into giving money on Facebook, and he described the criminal act as a ‘Nigerian scam’.

“I’m being told someone is using my name to trick people into giving money THIS IS NOT ME!!!!” He wrote, “It’s a Nigerian scam going on so if anyone on any page that has my name ask for money curse they ass out people will do anything for a dollar it’s crazy.”

On his page, offended Nigerians are dragging him for filth, but his fans claim that the singer never meant that the scam was being masterminded by a Nigerian, only that he described same as a scam Nigerians are famous for. Either way, the slap didn’t land softly, especially to compatriots eager to defend the nation’s honour.

uncleck:
An eyewitness account had it that last Thurday, July 9, a certain man and his pregnant wife were having issues with their neighbour at a location known as Oriaku Street off Aba/Owerri Road in Aba. After futile attempts by other neighbours to resolve the matter, the said ‘neighbour’ dashed off the compound (YARD as them dey call am for area) and in minutes, came back with a soldier who ordered the man & his pregnant wife into the ‘Keke’ they came with, apparently to take them to their Military station at Ngwa High School in Aba.

Word had it a heated argument ensued between the pregnant woman and the soldier. Before she knew it, she got dazed by the soldier’s slap on her face!

Unable to swallow such level of MADNESS by the Hausa soldier, the man whose wife was slapped started fighting the soldier. Before the Hausa soldier could say “Kai Nyamiri”, over a dozen “Aba boys” in the area descended on him and gave him the beating of his psychotic life!

Later, as the account had it, the area was besieged by angry soldiers in search of the boys that already vanished into thin air! Angrily, they started pummeling anything on trousers and whisking them to their camp.

Boko Haram is busy BOMBING the whole North! Instead of this ‘dare-devil’ soldier to go apprehend his Boko Haram “brothers”, he’s in Aba slapping a pregnant woman!

My Question is: Can he do that in the North? Why get involved in such civil matters? Or should i even blame the aggrieved neighbour that involved a soldier? What happened to the Police? Anyway, the police is a “FRIEND” many Nigerians avoid for obvious reasons.

No security… Insane law enforcement agents everywhere… No credible system. Talk about a JUNGLE indeed!

Reacting to the claim that Jonathan and Obi were behind the relocation of Boko Haram terrorists to Anambra State, the media aide to Peter Obi, Mr. Valentine Obienyem, said he was shocked that Governor Willie Obiano would personally sign such a release laying claims to what appeared nauseating and childish.

Obienyem said that such a claim would only end up proving to the people that there were more to the relocation than they already knew.

Describing the claim as a blatant lie, Obienyem wondered how an action or a plan concluded by a man who left office almost 16 months ago was being implemented now. obiano you cannot bite the finger that feeds you.peter obi made you whom you are paying him back with this faticious lie is hard to take.looking at the silent point raised by the Mr. peter Obi's spoke's person i now ask why is this relocation of Boko haram happening now after it has been initiated in 2012? PoliticsRe: We’ll Soon Expose Jonathan’s Loots -buhari by lawrsmith(m): 8:53am On Jun 30, 2015
silami:
President Muhammadu Buhari said the enormity of the billions stolen during the administration of his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, will be exposed when the loots are recovered, and returned to the national treasury soon.
Buhari, in a statement yesterday by his special adviser on media and publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, was reacting to Peoples Democratic Party National Publicity Secretary Olisa Metuh’s 30 days appraisal of his administration.
The presidential spokesperson faulted Metuh’s claim that Buhari’s men were conniving with bureaucrats to syphon money from the treasury.
“This must be deja vu, as it was the pastime of the immediate past administration, and the enormity of the sleaze will be evident when stolen money, to the tune of billions of dollars, is recovered, and returned to the national treasury soon.
“In the process of time, after all that is being planned by the current administration has matured, and bearing fruits, Nigerians will be able to determine who is serving them acceptably, and who has taken them for a ride. It is just a matter of time,” he said.
He said Metuh and his masters could only rue the missed opportunities to make salutary impact on the lives of Nigerians. “they have a long road of regrets to travel,” the presidential aide added.
He said Buhari was clearing the rots created by the PDP, especially during Jonathan’s government.
He said there was absolutely no reason for the way PDP and Jonathan ran the affairs of the country.
According to him, clearing the rots created by PDP in all sectors of the economy requires scrupulous and painstaking planning.
“The Buhari administration is naturally contemplative because there was absolutely no rhyme or reason to the way PDP ran the country, particularly in the immediate past dispensation. That is why the Augean Stable is being cleaned now, and it requires scrupulous and painstaking planning.
“Across all sectors, our national life was devalued, and it takes meticulousness and sure-footedness to repair all the breaches. This, the Buhari administration will deliver,” Adesina said.
He said Nigerians “had teamed up to uproot an administration that had brought the country to her knees, and was about to tip her off the precipice. And Nigerians have resolved that never would they allow any government to divide them along regional, religious and ethnic fault lines again.”

PoliticsRe: APC Insists On Ekweremadu’s Removal by lawrsmith(m): 8:43am On Jun 30, 2015
ZYZZA:
The battle for the control of the National Assembly may be long drawn as the leadership of the All Progressives Congress on Monday insisted on removing the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, of the minority Peoples Democratic Party.

One of our correspondents learnt on Monday that the ruling APC was still miffed that Ekweremadu emerged as the deputy senate president and had vowed never to allow “a senator from a minority party take over the duties statutorily assigned for the majority party.”

A leader of the APC, who spoke on condition of anonymity, explained that Ekweremadu as deputy senate president would hamper the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The APC leader said, “As deputy senate leader, Ekweremadu is automatically the Chairman, Senate Committee on Constitution Amendment. This is a sensitive position that, statutorily, should not be held by the minority.

“Ekweremadu and his PDP co-travellers will hamper the policies of the Buhari government. By the virtue of Senate rules, a member of the minority is not supposed to be the deputy senate leader; so, he is occupying the post illegally.

“We know the body language of some of these elements to anti-corruption. Nigerians know the stance of Buhari on corruption and insecurity. These elements occupying positions in the National Assembly must be removed. Otherwise, this administration is dead on arrival.”

He said the President was in support of the candidacy of Senator Ahmed Lawan for the senate presidency and had told Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, to support APC’s candidates for the principal posts.

“The President has refused to see Saraki and Dogara since they emerged as senate president and speaker respectively. Both Saraki and Dogara have done everything possible to see the President but he has shunned them because he is not happy about their conduct. You can see that the President has seen the Lawan group; this shows where his support lies,” the source added.

Meanwhile, barring any last minute changes, the National Executive Committee meeting of the APC will now hold on Friday.

National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, confirmed this to one of our correspondents in a text message on Monday.

In response to an inquiry from The PUNCH as to whether the party’s NEC would meet in Abuja on Tuesday, Odigie-Oyegun replied, “Necessarily on Friday.”

The PUNCH had earlier learnt that some party leaders at various levels had impressed it upon the party hierarchy to convene the high level meeting in order to find an amicable solution to the crisis threatening the party’s survival.

Members of the 48-member NEC are due to arrive in Abuja on Thursday, our correspondent learnt.

A national caucus meeting said to have been scheduled to hold on Monday was cancelled.

One of our correspondents, who visited both the party’s national secretariat and the residence of Odigie-Oyegun, reported that there was no sign that any meeting would hold at either of the venues as of 8.05pm on Monday.

The APC has been in crisis since the inauguration of the National Assembly on June 9 following the emergence of Bukola Saraki and Dogara as Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively.

The party had announced Senator Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila as its sole candidates for the two positions.

Matters were made worse when the Senate President ignored a party directive that the remaining four leadership positions in both chambers of the National Assembly should be conceded to those who “lost out” during the inauguration

no body is disputing the fact that those things you mentioned above are wronged to do and needed to be preached against.but let me ask you question? have you come accross anywhere in the world where pastors' is preaching in favor of those things you mentioned? nobody is condenming gay for crying out loud.for me legalizing gay is a sin against God and nature.if you look at the way human beings are created you will see Gods natural plan for man about sex and procreation.so legalizing gay is a way of going against God's plans for man.since other animal and other creatures has not violated this plans,i think it is insanity for man to follow this way when every other animal is still respecting the Nature.may God help us.
PoliticsRe: Corrupt People Will Face The Consequences – Osinbajo by lawrsmith(m): 12:13am On Jun 27, 2015
kabnafs:
reiterated the commitment of the present government to ensure that people caught in acts of corruption will face the consequences.

Osinbajo noted that corrupt practices, weak public and private institutions as well as public policies, were the greatest threat to the stability of the economy.

While speaking at the 3rd Annual Christopher Kolade’s lecture on business integrity in Lagos, the vice president said integrity should be an acceptable standard and aspiration of every business leader.

Speaking on the topic, ‘Beyond Compliance: Imbibing a Culture of Business Integrity,’ he added, “The most important thing is to do things right. It is important that what we do comply with the rule of law. There is need to ensure that people’s rights are not trampled on. And there is need to ensure that people face the consequences for wrongful actions. That balance is necessary. The administration will ensure that loopholes compliance are plugged and those responsible for creating loopholes will face the consequence.”

“The greater good of the company also means the greater good of many people, their lives and families. The question is, how do we respond to the ethical dynamics of poverty and corruption when it concerns our friends, ethnic or religious groups?”

Christopher Kolade noted the country was a difficult place to practise integrity because corruption was perceived as the norm.

He said, “We use corruption in our conversations than we talk about integrity. Integrity should feature more in our conversations. Integrity is meant to be natural to human beings.”
