Travel / Re: Why Is UK So Expensive??? by lazinc(m): 4:49pm On Jul 29, 2012
Theblessed: Man's greed, greed, greed!!!!!

That's why!

Also, people want quality lifestyle just as the rich and famous have, and someone will pay for it through their tax hence, UK will never be a Tax Heaven.

The NHS, the elderly, the disabled, single parents, jobseekers and child benefit etc must be cared for and paid for and this can only be achieved by hiking up the Tax/NI of those who work/businesses.

When you're sick NHS picks up the bill - you get looked after, get fed plus your treatment and you don't pay a dime - you, your children and wifey get cared for whatever the sickness, and your children also, get free education, abi! undecided undecided

Even those who have not contributed in any ways, still get care e.g. foreign students as yourself but one could argue that foreign students contributed via their tuition and I will argue, in other countries you still have the added responsibility of paying for your health care issues e.g. in America, you will still put in place Health Insurance should you fall ill whilst studying therefore, give UK a credit for that.

They don't charge students for health problems and remember, without health there is no life. Your health is your life/future.

Yes, Uk is expensive but most things were hiked up as a result of the this Olympics - before, it wasn't this bad at all!

As you can see, the Olympics committee over charged/priced a lot of things out of this world hence, the empty seats here and there - shame on them!! They thought they would recoup their Olympics investments in one day but it was a washout for them, on Day 1 - when they could have adopted Tesco's early days market strategy 'Pile it high and sell it cheap strategy ' in order to recoup their investment, plus profit.

So, it was because of this Olympics that prices went every where - utility bills went up, British Rail tickets went up Council tax went up, therefore, landlords raised their rents.

Personally, I don't live in London as I can't stand the 'rat race' but I live in a University Town where I rent my rooms to the University for £380.00 per month, might increase it come this academic year - Students be warned as you all know, education don't come cheap and you will recoup it at the appropriate time in your life, so don't look at what you pay - look at what you will gain, after all!! grin grin grin

Now, you can see the few reasons, UK is not a Tax Heaven!!! grin grin grin

How there you say foreign students dont contribute to NHS? Paying £20,000 as tuition fee while the so called UK/EU students paying just £4,000 for thesame course and you come here to say we are been offered free medical care?

Computers / Naija Made Ipad!! Inye by lazinc(m): 5:52pm On Jul 20, 2012
Nigeria's Saheed Adepoju is a young man with big dreams. He is the inventor of the Inye, a tablet computer designed for the African market.
According to the 29-year-old entrepreneur, his machine's key selling point is its price - $350 (£225) opposed to around $700 for an iPad.
He believes that, because of this, there is a big market for it in Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa, particularly amongst students.
He is also hoping to sell his tablet - which runs on the Google Android operating system - to the Nigerian government and plans to have at least one computer in each local government area.
"The Inye is a mobile internet device. It gives you access to the internet; it allows you to play media files and watch movies. What we have is an 8-inch device, a device that is half-way between a laptop and a mobile phone," he told the BBC's series African Dream.
"You have the standard software applications that come pre-installed and then you have the ones that we are working with various local developers to bundle on," he added.
Among those local apps there is one designed to raise awareness about HIV and others related to water and sanitation.
"We work with local developers that have expertise in particular areas so that we don't end up doing so much work and we just have a collaborative way of doing things together," he said.
'Word of mouth'
Mr Adepoju has a background in software development and is a Sun-certified Java programmer.
After doing a first degree in maths and computer science in Nigeria, he completed another one in advanced computing by research at Bournemouth University, in the United Kingdom.
Upon graduation in 2009, he returned to his home country and started working for a consulting firm.
"Within eight months I got fired, primarily because of differences in approach to doing business. In the middle of all this, the Apple iPad launched, back in January of 2010, which inspired us to actually look to build such [a] product within the African marketplace," the entrepreneur told the BBC Africa's Chris Ewokor.
He said that, with that goal in mind, he borrowed money from friends and family, raising a total of about $60,000.
According to him, all of that went on the devices and the logistics - there was no budget for marketing, so early advertising was "word of mouth" on social media.
The first 100 units of the Inye, which means One in Nigeria's Igala language, were built in China and, after receiving feedback from its users, a second version was launched in May 2011.
Encipher Group, the company he cofounded with web developer Anibe Agamah, also offers customised IT services and products, including cloud computing, which are mostly based on open technology to keep costs down.
Raising capital
According to Mr Adepoju, the company and the apps it develops are focused on preserving local culture through technology and making products which are specific to the local market.
Another product that the firm has been working on is Encipher TV, a box where people can watch African television, plays and films.
However, he says that it has not been easy to raise capital in order to develop the business faster.
"Here venture capital (VC) is still in its infancy and most VC firms wound want to invest in tried and trusted companies that have gained some form of traction," he said.
"We face the challenge of getting people to listen to the various propositions. We've been to a number of private investors and also to the government," he explained.
Not surprisingly, his immediate plan is to "try and raise capital from whatever sources we can get - locally, internationally or privately - and to try and still to push the brand forward as much as we can".

Will his tablet computer succeed in such a competitive environment? Only time will tell but Mr Adepoju and his colleagues are adamant that it will, not only in Nigeria but also in other African markets.

A similar incidence happened in the UK early this year and the next week the fellow got a job as a trainee. What happened was that a recruiter sighted him while holding the banner and approached him took his contacts and asked him if he can start work the following Monday as a trainee which the guy accepted.

Though I doubt if something like that can happen in naija. Just SMH

Politics / Struggles Of A Nigerian Abroad! by lazinc(m): 9:10pm On Apr 13, 2012
Struggles of a Nigerian Abroad
Right now, I am writing this from a four bedroom shared apartment in a little town called York, working a part time night shift of 5 till 9 as a telesales advisor, with no savings to my name and talking to the most beautiful girl in the world (my girlfriend). Nevertheless on paper (my curriculum Vitae) I have a diploma in Social administration and development, a bachelor’s degree in Sociology, a Masters in Public Administration/Public Policy Analysis and at the moment working on a professional Qualification.

The picture I have just painted is the reality which over 50 per cent of Nigerians in the UK face. Realistically speaking, my last statement might be seen as a complete generalisation, due to the lack of factual evidence in backing my report. However I won’t bore you on the details of collating factual statistics and how the Nigerian foreign affairs ministry should be able to provide this statistics (Which I have painstakingly searched for and just hit a dead end).So permit me to give my answer based on hearsay and my experience from the United Kingdom.

I recently graduated from one of the top ten schools in the UK and for the last one year I have been trying to secure a full time graduate role (I might as well be lazy and blame it on the recession). I was lucky to secure a job as a part time telesales advisor (bottom of the labour market). In order words I am a telesales agent with a master’s degree in politics and public management, don’t forget I am currently working towards my professional qualification and still applying for the graduate roles before my visa expires in less than 12 months. O I forgot to tell you the only way I can renew my Visa is if I secure a full time Graduate role.

On the other hand, if I was in Nigeria (this I also am basing on hearsay). I would most likely be working at the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service or as a junior staff in a bank earning less than 150000 a month. You might think it is a lot but wait till you deduct housing, food, and transport thus leaving me with nothing. Although it is said “there is no place like home”, and “Nigeria is where the money is at”. Yes those statements are true if you have a parent working in the Presidency or as they say “if you have leg”. Well I don’t have leg so I am taking a stance with the people who live on less than nothing a day, the medical doctor who works as a marketer, the engineer working as a lesson teacher and all the people who came out for the Occupy Nigeria protest. To be honest I believe Home is being slowly transformed into hell by the few at the helms of power.

I have given you a glimpse into my life and thought process, guess I will leave you with one of my aspirations and goals in life, which is to get as much experience, awareness and know how on my career path, no matter how much I have to suffer. And then come back to Nigeria to make a difference. This I have promised myself and my country Nigeria. So I leave you with the task of answering the question based on the little glimpse I have given you, into my life. Do you think young people studying/working abroad outside Nigeria face more or less challenges?

Politics / Trains Are Getting Better In Nigeria! Picture Attached by lazinc(m): 5:10pm On Apr 07, 2012
Trains are getting better in Nigeria
If you have not ravelled by train in Nigeria in the last few months, you must read this piece. Also a journey from Lagos to Oshogbo by train costs NGN 510, while to Offa costs NGN 600 and to Ilorin from Lagos costs NGN 680. About 1,000 commuters on Friday had a ride in the Lagos-Ilorin Mass Transit Train Service (MTTS). The train was filled to capacity, as some of the passengers, who could not get seats, stood all the way.

Mrs Oluwadunmininu Ashaye, a mother of 4 children travelling to Ibadan, said that she was always afraid of travelling by road during festive periods, as many accidents are recorded then.

“I cannot take the risk of travelling by road with all my children at this period because it is unsafe and will even cost me more. I am paying less than N1,000 for this trip while if it were by bus, a trip from Lagos to Ibadan would cost NGN 800 per passenger and lapping may not be allowed’’, Ashaye said.

A trip by train from Lagos to Abeokuta costs N180, as against N800 by bus, while Ibadan by train is N340, as against N800 by bus and N1,500 in car.

Survey: Nigerians Most Educated in the U.S.

Analysis of U.S. Census data and other surveys show Nigerian immigrants and their descendants score highest when it comes to earning degrees.

USA education, college, Nigerian immigrants, most educated in the United States

Nigerian Americans have long been known for their community’s intense cultural emphasis on education, and now an analysis of Census data coupled with several local surveys shows that Nigerians don't just value education, but surpass all other U.S. ethnic groups when it comes to obtaining degrees.

"Being Black, you are already at a disadvantage," Oluyinka Olutoye, an associate professor of pediatric surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, told the Houston Chronicle. "You really need to excel far above if you want to be considered for anything in this country."

According to 2006 census data, 37 percent of Nigerians in the U.S. had bachelor's degrees, 17 percent held master's degrees and 4 percent had doctorates. In contrast, the same census data showed only 19 percent of white Americans had bachelor’s degrees, 8 percent held master’s degrees and only 1 percent held doctorates, the paper reports.

The census data was bolstered by an independent analysis of 13 annual Houston-area surveys conducted by Rice University and commissioned by the Chronicle.

"These are higher levels of educational attainment than were found in any other...community," Stephen Klineberg, a sociologist at Rice University who conducts the annual Houston Area Survey, told the paper.

However, despite the strides in education made by many African immigrants, including Nigerian-Americans, discrimination still colors their prospects for employment. A study of 2010 employment data by the Economic Policy Institute showed that, across nationalities and ethnic groups, Black immigrants carried the highest unemployment rate of all foreign-born workers.

In addition to cultural expectations about obtaining higher education, the paper reports that many African immigrants are more likely to pursue higher education as a means of maintaining their immigrant status in the U.S.

"In a way, it's a Catch-22 — because of immigration laws you are forced to remain in school, but then the funny thing is you end up getting your doctorate at the age of 29," Amadu Jacky Kaba, an associate professor at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ, told the paper. "If you stay in school, immigration will leave you alone."

Politics / Boko Haram Killed 8 People Again! by lazinc(m): 9:38am On Apr 05, 2012
Boko Haram killed 8 people again.
Gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram on Wednesday killed 7 Christian traders at the popular Monday Market in Maiduguri. The Islamists arrived at the market, the biggest in the state, at about 2pm, and headed straight to the section occupied by Christian Igbo merchants, who were busy displaying their wares and trying to attract customers.

According to an eyewitness, the gangsters opened fire at 8 people, all of whom immediately died. All 7 were reported to be Christians. The 8th trader, simply identified as Taju, was the only Muslim.

A police official who spoke anonymously confirmed the killings. “7 Christians were shot dead,” he said. “The only Muslim who died is Taju by name; he works as a television and radio technician. So, eight people died in all.”
