Thanks a lot for your response. Your response is inline with one of my questions as quoted below.

However, I have searched the internet for official statement from NSE or OKOMUOIL to prove the 1 for 1 offer to the customers.

Nevertheless, I appreciate response from alexvatt; based on the price correction theory, I would like to see some official info.

Investment / Re: Sudden Change In Okomuoil Stock by lazinc(m): 8:51am On May 15, 2013
^^^ The reason for this price adjustment is because Okomu Oil declared a bonus of 1 for 1 meaning that a shareholder will get one share for each share held by him or her. For example, if someone is holding 10 shares, he will get 10 more (20 in total). The shareholders do not pay anything for these shares.
Usually, after the bonus issue, the share price of the company gets adjusted according to the bonus ratio. Since the price before the bonus issue was about N100 and Okomu Oil issued bonus shares in the ratio of 1:1, the post-bonus share price will be N50, which means that the total market value (2 x N50 = N100) remains the same.

Yeah i know why i wrote sentiments because from their reported first quarter Q1 results for 2013 their Profit after tax declined by 65% to N 491 million, Net margin also reduced to 27%, top line revenue declined by 35% to N 1.83 billion in 2013 from N 2.82 billion in Q1 of 2012, while their cost of sales rose to N 638 million...

So for now sentiments might drive it up not fundamentals...

OP, you can try ARM, formally owned by GTB. Their services are superb and they also have great team of securities analysts that carry out analyses of most Public coys and recommendations which you can compare with yours before making any investment decision.
The minimum amount required to open a stockbroking account with them is 50K as earlier mentioned, subsequently you can invest with any amount.
They have other investment services as well, like the ARM Mutual fund, Aggressive Growth Fund just to mention a few.
Great online portal where you can monitor your portfolio as well as carryout transactions on your portfolio. Ever since I opened an account with ARM I have never been disappointed.
You get them here www.armsecurities.com.ng/

Gosh! Have I been doing some PR for ARM? Anyways that's the result you derive when you offer a quality service to your customers.
Goodluck!
Investment / What Is The Difference Between Investing And Speculation? by lazinc(m): 2:53am On Apr 24, 2013
At first thought the answer looks very simple not until you actually sit down and put pen to paper to answer the question then you realize its not as easy as you may think.
According to the legendary Benjamin Graham, along with David Dodd, attempted a precise definition of investing and speculation in their seminal work Security Analysis (1934). “An investment operation is one which, upon thorough analysis, promises safety of principal and a satisfactory return. Operations not meeting these requirements are speculative.”
There are always two games going on in the market at any time: a game of skill and a game of strategy. Games of skill are speculating; and games of strategy are investing. The best way to understand this is to look at the definitions. Investors, like Warren Buffett, want to find the underlying value of a company. The time horizon is the same time horizon it takes to work out the company’s strategic plan, usually years and decades. The speculator doesn’t care about the underlying value of the company. He cares about the underlying demand of buyers and sellers in the stock. He is looking at the beauty-contest aspect: will people like the stock and bid it up or not.

So, let’s begin. What is the definition of investing? What is the definition of speculation?

Investment / Re: Dividend Stocks Vs Non-Dividend Stocks by lazinc(m): 11:14pm On Apr 21, 2013
Seun:
How to determine the value of a business? Well, let's imagine that you want to buy a small business in your area. You'll probably start by inspecting all available financial records for the business to figure out how well the business is doing. You'll learn everything there is to know about the business - value of assets, salary cost, rent, cost of training employees, level of patronage and sales, competitive situation, etc. You will use this information to predict the future profits of the business, and you will not pay more than an amount that guarantees that the future profits of the business after tax will exceed the amount you paid for the business in a reasonable period of time.

That's exactly the kind of process you should go through if you're thinking of buying a stock. A stock should not be regarded as a piece of paper that fluctuates in value depending on whether the bulls or the bears are reigning or whatnot. A stock is a piece of a company. The value of a stock depends entirely on the value of the company it's a piece of. Nothing else matters.

If you do not have the patience to analyse a business thoroughly, then it would be foolish to acquire it. In the same way, if you don't have the patience to analyse public companies thoroughly, you should avoid picking individual stocks for your portfolio unless you just want to entertain yourself (like a gambler). Instead, you should practice extreme diversification by buying small quantities of many uncorrelated stocks that look generally healthy and relatively cheap (honest & competent management, good competitive prospects, and low P/E ratio). If you do that, you are likely to equal the general performance of the stock market or outperform it very slightly, which is the most that you can reasonably hope for if you don't know how to value a business.

That's exactly what I'm doing in the stock market "Extreme Diversification" Looking out for companies that have durable competitive advantage like those you mentioned above with some other ratios (Profitability, liquidity, market and some special ratios) then carry out screening using the Ben Graham stock screening and Piotroski F - Score screening before making investment decisions. I invest in the stock market for the long term, with the slight ROI I'm getting so far, I still feel there's alot to be done.
I really want a situation where I can actually value a company, get the real worth of that company (Intrinsic value), then see if the shares of such company is actually trading at a discount with my margin of safety in place before I invest my money into it. The reason for this is because I'm looking into creating an investment arm of my company that will be dealing on stock investment.
At the moment, I'm trying to learn more on value investing. With the help of Bloomberg and Reuters where I get financial data of Nigerian public companies for the past five years to present, I'm learning how to use the DCF and DDM valuation methods and other qualities you listed above to know exactly the true worth of a company.
I want to believe I'm in the right track! Thanks

Get a Business Directory,
Monitor Newspapers & street Signages

All these will give you a database that you may have to follow up, by phone or one - on -one
You may also employ commissioned Agents to do the initial legwork

1. Determine how much you would reasonably pay for the entire company if you had enough money to buy it.
2. Divide this by the number of shares issued by the company. That gives you the true value of the stock. smiley

Symphony007: look at this kid! Which state in this country that is'nt having problems with exam malpractise? But which state has fought exam malpractise more than rivers state? The state government personally sends para-military forces to supervise exams and anyone caught is jailed. The governour and commisioner of education visit exam centers, where is that done? The government has fought so had and wace keeps telling them not to interfere with their organisation. So what do you expect them to do? You dare open your mouth to attack educationally the only state in the federation that jails parents who don't send their kids to school, and has the most sorphisticated schools where fees, uniform, sandals, books and even lunch is free. Better think twice before talking!!

Look at this fat cow o,its no longer news that rivers has d highest rate of exams malpractices, why do you think that most students from the east that couldn't passed waec in their various states found rivers as their safe haven to passed this same exams they couldn't passed back in their own states, its simply because of the rate of malpractices that goes on in rivers state.
Take UST for example, that's the HQ of exam malpractice and cultism in the state.

Symphony007: no good roads? You must be high, which south-south or south eastern city can compare with port harcourt for road networks? Stadium road, aba road, new airport road, peter odili road, mile 3 roads and mega fly over and many more! For your information rivers state is the only state in nigeria that has enough power to feed the whole state, it's has just been given the power by the feds to distribute and it is on a fast track! No solid infastructure? Apparently you're ignorant to the fact that the three tallest buildings in the entire south south and south east is located in port harcourt. You don't know about the monorail project whoes first phase in nearing completion. All the schools and health care centers jam packed in the state that you see one of them anywhere you turn! Please don't say ignorant things.

Road networks in portharcourt? I think you just displayed your stupidity at the highest level here. By good road I mean quality roads not all those I see in portharcourt being carried out by rubbish contractors like the mile 3 flyover (I laugh in swaili) you just foolishly mentioned. Other rubbish contractors like hommer n the rest keep doing shaddy roads all over the city that couldn't stand the taste of time. Portharcourt only has aba road that is always full of traffic and you said there are road networks. Stop deceiving yourself and take a visit to Akwa Ibom state you will know that portharcourt is no where cclose to it in terms of road infrastructures. Where I work in Akwa Ibom, Ikot Abasi there is 24/7 steady electricity because there's a state power plant there. The only place you can get that in rivers is in bonny island that's provided by nlng.

Ibom Tropicana is a scam. Ben Bruce knows it, Akpabio knows it, observers know it and good sons and daughters of Akwa Ibom knows it.

Godswill and his commissioners are stealing money through road contracts in the state and thats why there are som many road projects going on courtesy Gitto and Julius Berger.

Yeah I know Fashola also does the same scam, but at least Lagos roads lead to actual places where things are happening, business and pleasure.

Your roads lead primarily to dingy drinking joints and village-esque areas. Its only peaceful when politics is not being played and thats why they shed so much blood in AI during elections because they know the amount available to be stolen.

What you're calling development is

1. pictures of flyovers that lead primarily to nowhere.

2. plenty pictures of Le MEridien

3. E Library which is a known scam

4. Ibom Tropicana which is also a known scam

5. Keke Napep

Please don't put nonsense here and call it development again. Do you know how much Akpabio and Umana Umana are stealing?

Ode, olodo! I presume you don't know what you're talking about. Have you gone through the section of the eastwest road that links Rivers and Akwa Ibom state lately? musiwa23: uyo city is base on scam run by ngozi iweala ministry on oil allocation in nigeria.. there are not 70 oil platform in akwa ibom state as claim by the Supreme court of Nigeria..

Akwa ibom state govt went to court with false information claiming it had 70 oil platform. there is no 70 oil platform in akwa ibom state.. there are less than 15 platform.. and even some of them are in cross river state and not akwa ibom state..

so akwa ibom state govt is running a scam on the rest of the nation of Nigeria. that is not fair on majority of Nigeria.. or on cross river state..

What the supreme court need to do is review the case.. And the supreme court fail to visit the place to comfirm if there is 70 oil platform. And the supreme court of Nigeria fall for a scam by the akwa ibom state govt. And I dont even think, if the akwa ibom governor have ever seen 70 Oil platform.. .

This is it.. the Akwa ibom state govt should take the pictures of the 70 oil platform and show it to the whole of Nigeria.. it does not exist.. It was a scam on nairaland which went to the supreme court. because the owners of nairaland are runnning scam.

I'm tempted to say that you're a complete illiterate. Go and get your facts right. Besides those wells you mentioned, most of the major deep offshores fields like USAN project operated by Total and the rest are located off the coast of Akwa Ibom state. Rubbish

I know the basic principles of stock valuation. I have a copy of Ben Graham's stock aalysis book, The Intelligent Investor, and another one on company valuation. But I find financial statements to be extremely boring, so I have never actually completed the process of analyzing any stock. Ben Graham used to analyze stocks with his students during class, and many of them made a lot of money by investing on the basis of his analysis. I wish a good stock analyst would create a stock analysis thread here on Nairaland so we can learn & practice it together.

On the bolded, that was actually what attracted me to this thread but I can see that the main aim is defeated because you guys have derailed this thread. I have been investing in the market for quite some time but I cant call myself an investor, maybe I'm still speculating because "An investment operation is one which, upon thorough analysis, promises safety of principal and a satisfactory return. Operations not meeting these requirements are speculative" - Graham.
I have been doing my analysis on companies, despite the fact that getting financial data on Nigeria companies are somehow challenging compared to other developed markets around the world.

I want to see a situation, where some of us can take up companies, analyze these companies, determine the real worth of these companies - The intrinsic value, because having an intrinsic value estimate keeps one focused on the value of the business, rather than a piece of the stock - and that's what we want because, as an investor, you are buying a small piece of a business. This gives us strong basis in making investment decisions.

I will like the boss Seun and other investment gurus to keep this thread alive.

PTDF OVERSEA SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) is a parastatal of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources established by Decree 25 of 1973 for the purpose of developing and promoting petroleum technology and for creating the manpower needs of the oil and gas industry through research and training of Nigerians.

Our mission therefore is to train Nigerians to qualify as graduates, professionals, technicians and craftsmen in the field of engineering, geology, science and management in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria or abroad. We have a vision to serve not only as a vessel for the development of indigenous manpower and technology transfer/acquisition in the petroleum industry but also to make Nigeria a human resource centre for the West African sub-region.

To ensure a steadfast implementation of this mandate, PTDF is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates for Overseas MSc and PhD Scholarships. Scholarships will be awarded for studies in the 2013/2014 academic session in the United Kingdom and France (Grenoble INP) and upgraded Universities in Nigeria for the 2013/2014 session. However, the Undergraduate level will be awarded for studies in Nigeria only on subject areas listed below.

Application Forms can be accessed online using an ATM card or through purchase of a scratch card from designated main branches of First Bank of Nigeria Plc in all the States and FCT, upon payment of a NON-REFUNDABLE sum of N1,000 (One Thousand Naira Only). Instructions on how to access the form online is clearly stated on the backside of the cards.

Applicants may please note that only those who meet the requirements below shall be shortlisted and invited for Electronic Aptitude Test, in the case of Master’s, while oral interview will be conducted for PhD (full time) on dates to be announced later. Following the aptitude tests and interview, the best qualified candidates will be selected and awarded the PTDF Scholarship.

PTDF however wishes to inform applicants that the Overseas Scholarship Scheme was instituted as a short term measure to address identified skills gaps, pending the outcome of the various capacity building efforts being made to enable our domestic universities effectively handle the onerous task of grooming qualitative professionals in the oil and gas related disciplines. This is why Nigerians always fail their exams, they answer before reading the questions. Your 3GB data volume for N2800, is it not a BlackBerry plan, even though you are using it for your Android device?

Thank God you mentioned my 3Gb data volume for N2800, forget blackberry plan, even if na Nokia plan, the fact that it does what I want (Fast Internet Access), that is just fine by me.
