EducationRe: Algebra Cafe: Solve Math Problems Here by LearnBook: 1:24pm On Apr 03, 2008
donchichi: shares out is the right phrase. It's more like 4 for Dele, 1 for Ifeoma. Dele is sharing but that does not exclude him from the process.

Anyway, enough of the semantics here. Yes, the correct answer is 3. Dele gets 12, Ifeoma gets 3 and the ratio 12:3 is equivalent to 4:1.

Have a good day.

It may have to be SMS based as most people have access to a mobile phone.

Dele shares out 15 sweets. He gives Ifeoma 1 for every 4 he eats. How many does Ifeoma get?
EducationRe: Should We Still Learn 'oral English' In Our Secondary Schools? by LearnBook: 11:25am On Mar 31, 2008
Yes. I was shocked to find that in some places oral English is not tested. In my opinion the quality of spoken English in Nigeria has deteriorated in the last decade.

WebmastersRe: All Nigerian Sites With .NG Domains Were Down by LearnBook: 4:54pm On Jun 27, 2007
Our biggest weakness is our lack of understanding of two words : infrastructure and maintenance. Today, a solid Internet infrastructure is as important as physical infrastructure like roads. Sadly, we fall short in both. Is it any wonder that most nigerian and african sites end in .com or .net?
EducationRe: Can You Send Your Child To A Public School? by LearnBook: 11:11pm On Jun 20, 2007
I think there's a market for affordable private primary schools charging NGN 2000 per month per pupil. These schools could possibly be rolled out using a similar model suggested by The Spark Group (www.thesparkgroup.net) for India. This model might offer quality education for larger number of nigerian kids.
PoliticsRe: 'I Will Create Products For Every Businessman!' by LearnBook: 2:01pm On May 25, 2007
One thing that I think is missing in the jobs debate is the absence of seed money to allow people to start real businesses (not just buy and sell) I wonder how far some people might go with just 250,000 naira worth of seed money.
CareerRe: Computer Science: A Good Course Or Not? by LearnBook: 1:46pm On May 01, 2007
Agreed with eko4show. Focus on something generic like Mathematics (if you can), code on the side and you will have a lot of possibilities. The future belongs to smart people who can solve real problems regardless of what they study.

Who will be writing the next SMS banking application that will allow poor/rural people to open a bank account with 500 naira, transfer money via SMS, purchase via SMS etc.?

Who will be working on a biometric voting system that will prevent electoral fraud once and for all as no two people have the same biometric footprint (so the computer will just discard multiple votes by the same person)?

My half a cent.
EducationRe: JAMB/UME Marking Scheme by LearnBook: 1:39pm On May 01, 2007
Every subject has a different marking scheme. However, I think you should focus on your revision, read the questions carefully (they tend to tell you how many marks are awarded) and concentrate on answering them correctly. Most people who do not do well tend to have omitted revision and reading the questions properly.
EducationRe: Is It Better To Stay On-Campus Or Off-Campus In UK Universities? by LearnBook: 1:48pm On Apr 23, 2007
As you are new, you should stay on campus for at least the first year. You tend to get good support as there will be many others who are going through the same experience. After a few terms and when you know your way around, wou could consider moving but then you may be having so much fun that you stay put. wink
BusinessRe: I Think I Need Some Business Partners! by LearnBook: 8:45pm On Apr 19, 2007
I think its a good idea. If you look at popular blogs on the Internet like techcrunch.com or gigaom.com, they started with one blog and moved to different areas. Maybe, you could look for someone who already has a job and will start part-time and as revenues increase may be able to move full time.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Silverbird Is Now Recruiting by LearnBook: 4:34pm On Apr 16, 2007
seun,

have you considered setting up a dedicated job board thread where companies pay to post job adverts? All the main sites do that now.

Thanks

BusinessRe: How To Start An Internet Cafe In A Village? by LearnBook: 10:26pm On Apr 07, 2007
Your biggest problem apart from the actual Internet Connection would probably be power. I would recommend that you look into solar power / inverters / batteries. Your initial cost would probably be higher than with a generator but your running costs would be much lower.
BusinessRe: Starting Up A Consulting Company by LearnBook: 4:20pm On Apr 05, 2007
Sorry, you don't need a degree to be a consultant and you don't have to be a limited company either. You can start as a soletrader. However, you do need skills in an area that people will want to pay you for. Take something like IT Consulting. You can focus on small business IT consulting and master something like Microsoft Small Business Server. There appears to be very few companies in Nigeria with these skills in my opinion.

Another area you could look at is small business accounting - here a lot of companies use peachtree. But peachtree was made for the american market, does not allow the use of other currencies etc. So that's a possible opportunity as well.

EducationRe: What's The Secret To Success In JAMB? by LearnBook: 9:35am On Mar 29, 2007
1. Start revising early (active revision with feedback)
2. Breakdown your revision into manageable bites
3. Make sure you have a good nights sleep before each exam

Seun, are you implying that all the problems and potential problems that we face in Nigeria and West Africa have been solved? Altavista was the dominant search engine before google. Where are they now? I think that there are lots of problems waiting to be solved.

Try the opensource school tool (http://www.schooltool.org/) Although still in beta, you may be able to modify it to suit your needs.

Potential developers should also study actual trends. These days a lot of software are webbased and based on the common LAMP (Linux, Apache, Mysql and PHP). These are all free. Most of the software developers I met do not appear to have these skills.
