CareerRe: Personal Savings Culture Amongst Youth - Inputs Required by leighcon(m): 5:28pm On May 27, 2010
@Pa-Ken
I think you  leverage on joining staff bus to work, and secondly you must have cut down a lot on buying home appliances since you've acquired most of them way back (You probably were not etremely frivolous afterall). What this portends is that you don't set aside money for home appliances anymore so I think that must have helped in jerking your savings to more than 50%.

@all
From our feedbacks I am deducing that a starter has a lot of set targets to meet and may only be able to save very little  while even occasionally dipping hands into the savings.

For me I have not lived an extravagant life but I have come to realise that Lagos can be really expensive. Funny you never know how the expenses creep in.

May be we should put some figures down for proper analysis, my scenario is Lagos and residence is Mainland while office is oin the Island

Transport/M    Public Transport - N15k    Private Car fuellling   N25K
Fuel for Gen                                N12K
Lunch @ work                             N10K
Food Items @ home                   N10K
Utility BIlls(Gas, PHCN etc)         N7K
Misc                                           N10K
Phone Bills                                 N5K

Any more realistic usual bills

This is an interesting topic with informative replies.

That's because people have been sharing their experiences

The truth is I am one of those youths working without saving so I really can't make much of an input to help you
Count your honest response as input.

@Pa-Ken

Do you stay in Lagos?
Do you own a car? (And at what rate does it visit clinic)
What are the regular utility bills you pay?

And you are not a starter I think so you probably have assets (Home appliances) at least the necessary ones - Confirm this.

We really need to learn from your formula
CareerRe: Personal Savings Culture Amongst Youth - Inputs Required by leighcon(m): 2:21pm On May 27, 2010
AjanleKoko:
Okay.
I was actually looking at the single youth, in response to your first question.
For married people, the curve will be different, as you will have less need for lifestyle, and more need for family expense funding. Kids can fall sick at short notice (That is if there is any notification at all) , you have to pay creche and school fees, maybe even finance a maid or driver, etc.
As per further studies, on 174k, it would have to be local education. Possibly professional certification or a local postgraduate degree. For foreign degrees, the cost is almost criminal. For an average UK Masters, you're looking at maybe 25k pounds, so you're going to have to save 100% of your money for 3 years to afford that.
Thanks Ajanlekoko, in essence the 5% cannot even be constant for the married ones.

People don't let us digress from the OP's intention
abott:
I therefore require your input on the following: Lets assume that you earn a net monthly take home pay of N174,000.00.  N174k might not be common but that is what he wants to work with

1. Of this amount, what percentage do you think you can save, without touching it, consistently for two(2) years on a regular monthly basis ?
               Consistency is the keyword there
2. If your percentage savings is low, what do you think is responsible for it. Low percentage savings means 40% savings or less.

Your response will be appreciated.
OP,
For people who live in Lagos 40% may not be a low percentage. Ajanlekoko suggested 5% (N8.7k) as being realistic but I'ld say with moderate lifestyle and discipline N20k monthly (about 11.4%) is realistic.

My own experience however is that even when you decide to save that up one tends to dip hands into it to acquire some necessities. And if God has blessed you with a car - That is one wife on its own.

For people who can (in Lagos) set aside 40% and above (N69.6k +) monthly, please share your formula with us.
CareerRe: Personal Savings Culture Amongst Youth - Inputs Required by leighcon(m): 2:08pm On May 26, 2010
@Ajanlekoko,

The questions were directed to you really, I was working based on the 5% you mentioned and I'ld like us to take further assumptions maybe it can make the % vary or not.
With this the poster can expand the scope of his research to cover different assumptions and 2 - Selfishly I'ld say I want to learn more
CareerRe: Bankers' Forum by leighcon(m): 7:52am On May 26, 2010
A big question to Bankers (Preferrably with more than 2yrs experience).

Do you guys get paid for going to work or you get paid for working?

Well I joined the banking sector from I.T sector like 3 months back and if I will make comparison, people in the IT and telecoms work their ass out whereas what I see in the banking sector is eyeservice and people exerggeration of work done. Could it be that am missing something here.
CareerRe: Personal Savings Culture Amongst Youth - Inputs Required by leighcon(m): 7:42am On May 26, 2010
Ajanlekoko,
Your post just made me feel I must have been normal afterall as I've always assumed something was wrong with my planning. I however think we need to still categorize these youths further.

1.Are we looking at the youth that stays under his own roof and bears his bills alone?
2.Are we looking at the married ones?
3. Is this person equally setting aside money for certain projects say further studies, car, housing etc?

You obviously have a good experience of this stage, thus throwing it back to you.
TravelRe: Beware Of Armed Robbers New Technique by leighcon(m): 4:32pm On Nov 21, 2009
While I agree  this could be one of the ever dynamic strategies robbers employ, just wondering;
1. From what position  will the egg be thrown
2. It definitely must be that the car will be at snail speed for the robbers to plant themselves where they can meet up with you.

The lesson I see here rather is that we should be watchful and only park at isolated places only when it is unavoidable.

Mr Adenuga Very biggest Kudos for supporting sports again and again.

@mbulela

Couldn't decipher the direction of your argument at least tell us one way he has unjustly benefitted from "your tax money". Give us a valid statement, but I think addressing someone as gullible is far too derogatory

You could have helped by telling me what the delivery error message was. I suspect a typo error, nevertheless the initial instruction says you should send it to hr@swiftng.com

A bank like BNP Paribas will not be willing to associate with somebody who is fronting or a pipe but truth is the 5th largest bank in the world proudly associates with Otunba(Dr) Michael Adeniyi Adenuga (Jr)

Jarus:
The spirit that drove him to bid for Glo licence is enough to show his 'can do-ness', he lost 20million dollars in his first attempt as CIL, but came back again and bounced back with Glo.
And do you also recollect that his bid shook the likes of Bello Osagie at that time. He actually bidded up to $300 million before NCC pegged the license price at $285million for the sake of MTN and Econet the closest bidders who could not go beyond that.

The sensible guy eventually bought a bundle of licenses for $200 million
SportsRe: Appreciating Mike Adenuga For Supporting Nigerian Football by leighcon(m): 6:30pm On Sep 02, 2009
Did someone say Adenuga has no pedigree C'mon people I think we sometimes need to do research beyond "pepper soup joint gists" and "biased Newspaper reports"

Just a tip ---That man Adenuga was the first person to ever ship to Nigeria   car radios  for vehicles that did not have them  fitted from factory.

The guy met business at home   ooo! - His mother once won the largest distributor of both Nigerian Brewries and Guinness Nigeria in a particular year in the 60's.
Do you also know about  the Glo-1 project he is bankrolling, let him drop all other businesses, that cable will keep his generations to come rich.
That man will be a good mentor if you desire a  "can do spirit"

In my "widows mite" of public comment  I appreciate him for his support for Football development in the country.

The trick is don't explicitly state ur grade but make bold your experience
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Customer Service Job At Swift Networks by leighcon(op): 9:15am On Sep 01, 2009
@Seun
Sure Nairaland platform has been wonderful, applications keep rolling in but Nigerian graduates can be funny a lot can't just adhere instructions.

@gisters609
The address is clearly stated on the instructions

@Carshopper
Industry average

@cele4u
Well for now 2.1 only you might be lucky somebody skips your grade on your C.V and if you are found to be good - goodluck.
The organisation is not discriminatory on gender but I guess people with empathy are needed that's the reason for bias for ladies. If a guy has it why not. But note I.T background is more important.

@Ekwere
Which unit do you work?

CareerRe: When Best Do We Invent? During Necessity Or When Economy Is Buoyant: by leighcon(m): 7:27pm On Jul 28, 2009
Dear all,
This is one topic worthy of bringing   a "si don look" Nlander  back to contributing to threads.

@lekside44  - Good thought for  bringing this topic to fore.

@AjanleKoko - Kudos for digging out this topic posted more than a month ago, I must say I have read your posts in the past and you expouse one thing we share - Positive thoughts (Ko ni tan nibe oo)

People!, the common saying is that  "necessity is the mother of inventions" I will be changing that to what can best explain inventions we have seen, here mine goes  "necessity and curiousity are  the mother of inventions"  Necessity explains inventions at the times of discomfort while Curiusity explains for inventions at the times of comfort. That is why less developed and developed nations keep having reasons to invent.

Back to my motherland - Why are we not inventing? Well the straight answer to that is that we are not at work at solving our own domestic problems. And why are we not solving our problems

(1) Our colonial experience has deprived us a lot - if you look at it the whites indeed left a long time ago but some elites simply stepped into their shoes and continued where they stopped while the non - elites keep struggling be new elites one day.

(2) The foregoing made us lose  a national culture, whereby individuals do not think of Nigeria rather think of ourselves and our own lineage of generations coming behind.

It is the symptom of the second that we keep seeing in other spheres - This is why a lot of people never learn to queue in any place, we keep looking for people we know at the counter, we prefer to bribe a PHCN official to help adjust our postpaid bill rather than insist on him taking the right readings which we can both work out and arrive at the actual bill, andf the PHCN official keeps discouraging you about the prepaid metre because he knows there won't be cuts for him anymore.  Parents helping children to cheat in exams right from primary school these days.

All those tend to make an average Nigerian think that nothing is achievable  except regular route is bypassed and noboby then wants to trust anybody with anything. The people who attempt a normal route are called slackers and discouraged.

Way forward
A positive change is required in every individual, we need to all have a positive outlook to situations and you should start by not thinking that you never got that job because you did not know somebody or that WAEC failed you. My thinking is that if 50+1% of Nigerians wake up one day and do things the right way then an immediate change will be observed for that day. How soon we can have this possibility looks like it gets longer by the day because the big man  politician is still stealing and the begger is still disguising to steal as well.

I can only ask you to start the change by not throwing out dirts on the street from your car else you are still one of those pulling us back.

Am sorry for boring you by bringing up varying issues  but then how are we going to have inventions when we have not  changed - very impossible!
