*we did the necessary greetings and finger prints*
vo: i see you’ve been refused visa before, why is that?
Me: I believe the visa consular officer wasn’t convinced
Vo: why wasnt he/she convinced
Me; i think because of what happened in 2018
Vo; yea, what did happen in 2018
Me: after completing my undergraduate program, I returned to the states in 2018 and did not enroll in classes because -
Vo: *cuts me off* were you not informed by the school that not enrolling would lead to your I-20 being terminated?
Me: I was, but only when it was about to be terminated
VO: *types for a bit*... so why didnt you go back? Why didnt you continue
(My nervous dumbass thought he meant this year)
Me: I came back for Christmas to visit my family and renew my visa and it got denied.
Vo: I’m sorry I cant issue your visa. Good luck

My nerves always get to me and it really messes me up.

So the story is basically this; I’m a Pharmacy student. Second year into pharmacy school. On finishing my undergrad in 2017 December, I came home, renewed my visa and went back in January. I majored in pre-pharmacy which is basically just the pre-requisites to get into pharmacy school. When I returned to the states Jan 2018, I didnt enroll in classes because I thought my i-20 would cover me since my Pharmacy school -even if I have gotten admission - starts mandatorily in the fall (august). I had returned to America for prospective interviews which is part of the interview process. I had applied to 3 pharmacy programs. I got an interview for my current school sometime in April and got admitted in May.
Regarding my I-20 termination, I was not informed when I hadn’t registered in classes. Only time the Intl. Student Office reached out was to inform me on a Friday that my I-20 would be terminated the following Monday. I went straight to her office said Monday and she said there was nothing she could do about it. I’d have to wait for my admission into Pharmacy school to file for reinstatement with USCIS... which i did.
I was also instructed to still follow F1 visa rules which meant enrolling in my pharmacy classes by fall as I waited to hear back on my reinstatement... which I did.
My reinstatement got approved and I got a new i-20.
Pls help embarassed

So sorry to hear this, I hope you get your visa approved the next time. Few questions... the i20 you currently have is for which semester ? And also is your program currently running or yet to start?

Sometimes I feel like this people deny based on their present feelings. It’s sad honestly quote author=UNCG post=95992864]My Transcript.
Lagos.
November, 13th.

VO: Where are you going to?
Me: I'm going to the University of North Carolina, Greensboro for a Master's in Information Technology and Management.
VO: What would you do with this course?
Me: I want to solve the problem of food distribution. This program, information technology and management with a concentration in supply chain will ensure I am trained to apply information technology, data and systems to the food chain, to ensure the supply matches the demands. (Looking back, I should have mentioned that I have a background in Food Engineering).
VO: It seems you've really researched this.
Me: Yes, I have.
VO: Why this school?
Me: Asides being offered funding, this program is unique. Information Technology and Management with a concentration in supply chain management. I'll be getting a technical education and also a business education which is perfect for my career interest.
VO: What other schools did you apply to?
Me: University of Florida and Pennsylvania State University.
VO: Pennsylvania. I see you have funding. What is it about?
Me: I was offered graduate assistantship and would be working as an instructional assistant.
VO: Who is paying the deficit?
Me: My uncle.
VO: Where does he stay?
Me: Lagos.
VO: What does he do?
Me: He operates a big medical diagnostic laboratory.
VO: Are you Married? Kids?
Me: No
VO: Your application is denied. Take this paper?

BSc: Food Engineering
Funding: $26,000+
Deficit: $11,000+

I cannot 100% recall the conversation and I tried to put it down as best as I can recall. My VO was at stand 6 and the two people before me were rejected.

Looking back, it is easy to say I should have said this or I should have responded this way but I responded to the best of my ability. My profile is good and the questions he asked were generic so I'm totally confused about the reason for the rejection. He did not ask for bank statement or any other document.

I'll pay another appointment fee but this time I'll choose Abuja.

But this is a good profile, have you been working in line with your chosen program??

[quote author=NigPatriot post=96165007]So my friend just sent me her transcript via WhatsApp. She's not on this platform. But since I knew when she began this journey, I feel I should post this here.

Embassy Location: Lagos
VISA APPROVED 13/11/2020

GRE: 294
TOEFL: 89

V.O: Good morning

Me: Good morning Sir

V.O: Pass me your documents

Me: I did ( The man was just typing all through)

V.O: Where are you going to?

Me: I'm going to University of Texas to pursue my Masters degree in AESS

V.O: What’s PGRA? (Still typing and not even looking at me)

Me: Presidential Graduate Research Assistantship Award (Omo guys, I was so nervous that I didn’t even bother explaining the award in depth, I just told him the full meaning)

V.O: (Looks at my I-20) Why Sustainability Studies?

Me: Upon Graduation, I worked as a graduate intern in a Gold mine where I observed the ‘bad’ (I was supposed to say negative) impact of mining activities in the environment. That was what spurred my interest in this field. (Guys for real, I didn’t just say all these things at once o, I stammered o all through. Out of fear) ( The VO was just typing, then he gave me this look like ‘it’s not that serious, calm down ’)

V.O: Have you ever travelled out of Nigeria?

Me: No ( I said No out of fear o, like a reflex) ( Then I quickly said sorry Sir, I have been out of Nigeria for my undergraduate studies) ( Then the VO nodded and gave me this look again like; Oh! so you just woke up from your sleep abi) ( I really don’t know why I was so nervous o)

V.O: I will be approving your visa. (Gave me the yellow slip where he circled the F1 visa and another form for the DHL stuff) and directed me to pay the reciprocity fee.

Me: Thank you, sir.

GUYS, it was just God ooo, because personally I know that I messed up a lot hmmm but God showed me mercy and His favor took over

Please be calm when answering the questions.

What I observed in most of the rejection cases was that the “Who will be funding you part was not answered well”

Big thank you to everyone who contributed to this victory , all the previous success stories that encouraged me

I wish all the applicants yet to be interviewed God’s speed and unmerited favor (because that’s all we need to be honest, no amount of preparation is sufficient, during all my mocks ehn, you should have seen me running my mouth, but when I got there I was stammering but Jesus took the wheel

P.s: The preparations should not be underestimated also, because it gives you some level of confidence.

Sorry for my long story

Thank you once again.t

I am sorry about your wife's and baby refusal.
I think it is important to note that VOs looks at cases differently. Those who were approved with F1-F2 were probably not interviewed by the VO that intervieweed your wife today. Now, during interview, VO usually ask about husband or wife coming to join later--in case you are married with kids. It is possible the VO that approved your visa asked you this question. Perhaps? What you said was No, not at this time. Probably? You have been in the US for a year, and now, your wife and only kid was about to join you. The VO probably thought this is a plan to migrate since you are already in the US and your wife and kids will not be returning to Nigeria with you once you graduate--if at all you will return yourself. I know this may not be the case.

Another thing is, I don't think she has funding, although she really gave very strong points during our mock. Now, here is another question: if you and your wife and baby are out, what is the chances of coming back after graduation? Very slim to impossible--in the mind of the VO. This is how they think.

She can change class of visa to F2, but I really hope that works. Now, I really hope, because that will confirm exactly what the VO might be thinking, that they are runing to come and be with you and you guys do not really want to return (assuming this is what he thought). Have you visited Nigeria since you travelled?

This type of case is hard to predict or say something definite on. Last fall, a lady I'd call T (not her real name) was refused twice with her baby, even though she has funding, and have been to the US like twice or so (can't remember details vividly anymore). After deliberation, I suggested she might need to leave the baby with hubby in Nigeria and apply alone--just to show her intention is purely for studies. She said she thought about the same and boom, she reapplied, and she was given the visa in December. She's in Indiana now, studying.

Another example is Bley (name changed). She got funding from XX university, and even though she is a mother, she applied alone. I think after a year and half, she returned to pick the infant (early this year), and according to her, the VO who interviewed her and the baby sympathised as why she left a baby so young behind for studies in the US. Now, something happened: Before Bley came in January, her hubby got admission to the same school, full funding. My dear, he was refused like 5 times. I remember grilling him over the phone. My grilling failed! grin Na so he chill and let go. Till now, the husband no get the visa. But wife and baby don dey US.

Case differ. No two VOs are the same, and even if they are same, they are unlikely to make same decision on different applications. Which is why you should not look at why it worked for others and not for you at this time.

One thing I am very sure about the US embassy is that, if they smell intention to run, they will refuse. It doesnt matter how you feel! Their job is to refuse anyone they feel isn't a credible student (even if the applicant is credible). How do you make them see that you're credible? So how do you show you are a credible student with intent to return to Nigeria after studies? Well, there's no single way to it, and in your wife's case, it is tricky.

My advice for her is to try again. But if getting funding is possible, tell her to try. It takes competitiveness to get funding, and I want to believe that every VO sees your funding as an opportunity you cherished and that you'd not abandon that just for your relationship. If your wife wants to show that credibility and remove the intent to migrate that appears to be visible (because you're there, and now, she is coming with your only child), she should have a competitive admission. OR, drop your baby out of the application. OR, she can try again and see how it goes.

Please note: I AM NOT A VO. THIS IS PURELY AN OPINION FROM MY ASSESSMENT OF YOUR SITUATION.
I hope this can help you make the right decision.

Hello @ Fairheart Please I sent you an email, I will like to have a mock with you. Thank you in anticipation for a Response

The issue of strong ties, got me thinking if that would be an issue, since parents don’t reside in Nigeria.

Will being born outside Nigeria affect my chances of getting a visa? I work in Nigeria but parents live outside Nigeria in another Africa country. Does thAt show I donot have strong ties in my country?
