Angelfrost:
Yes, you are right about such offenses being wrong and criminal... But, they are a civil matter.

They are not in the league of crimes like armed robbery, battery, or homicide.

Civil offenses are handled by courts... This means the petition should be filed with the court, a judge should SUMMON the offender (note the keyword), and he should be made to explain himself.

The judge can thereafter award fines against the offender.

Remember the case between the Falanas and VDM?!!

Why didn't they have him arrested, imprisoned and his fundamental rights trampled upon?!!

You only arrest the offender if he refuses to show up in court or obey a judge's summon.

You didn't sue someone for alleged defamation, but quickly got the police to arrest and dehumanise him... That doesn't make sense.
Unfortunately most of the arrest were not based on the civil cases of libel, but on the cyber crime Act as Amendments in 2024.
Once the allege defamation is posted online it becomes a cyber crime.
If our judiciary system is fixed and cases are decided promptly, victims can get justice. But where civil cases runs for 15years, victims are forced to seek justice somewhere else.
But more importantly is that bloggers should stop destroying others people. The victims deserve justice

Then amend the law and de-criminalize it. The victims deserve justice also

The laws state that the police should arrest, forcefully imprison and dehumanise individuals because of allegations or petitions leveled against them?!!

What exactly are you trying to justify here, please? Or you didn't quite grasp my post?!!

Abi you wish to pretend you don't know what these law enforcements do in the name of 'arrests' ?
I'm in no way justifying how our law enforcement is done, we should do better. I'm only highlighting the responsibility of citizens to know and understand the law of their country and stay out of harms way. If you comprehend that an act is criminal, you should become much careful how you conduct yourself.
But we must also recognize the impacts of falsehoods on the security of the victims. The victims are citizens that deserve the right to be protected

The fomer has been amended and the amendment is what even your Police Force ought to be working with. So, again... huh?🙄🙄🙄🙄
My point is that the amendment is still porous. Note that I'm not in anyway justifying the abuse of process, but that it's important for citizens to know their laws

Ignorance is not an excuse. I think Nigerians needs to know their law. Most of the stuffs that people post online against others especially when they are false are criminalized given this Act

and so? so the police should be allowed to operate in gestapo manner? was he ever declared wanted? was he invited for questioning and he refused to appear? was it a murder or armed robbery case. it simply a case of defamation which in sane society the police should have no business with aggrieved person should simply go to court. impunity and lawlessness everywhere
Once that defamation is posted online, it has become a cyber crime and police can be invited. That's our law in Nigeria, be educated. It's not lawlessness.

I will never understand or grasp the concept or practice of police arresting and locking people up on account of petitions...!

How do we even normalise such an abnormal trampling of the fundamental rights of citizens?!!

The person is not a criminal, is not a flight risk, has no issues with the law... Why the use of oppressive tactics and force?!!

They even manhandle and dehumanise the individual.

Why can't a competent court or judge issue a summon to the individual petitioned and invited to appear in court?!!

Why the use of police force in a civil case?!!

Yet... When Kanu called this nation a zoo, you all reacted in misplaced righteous anger.
Then you are not conversant with the extant laws. The Cyber crime laws permit such and stipulated the punishment. It's a very serious issue.
The point here is that bloggers should stop defaming people. Once your online posting is false, then you have committed an offense.
By the way why do you think telling lies against someone else is fair?
PoliticsRe: Kano Assembly Rejects Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills by Lifestone(m): 1:37am On Dec 03, 2024
Frigga13:
Mr Husseini argued that if passed into law, the bills would not benefit the Northern States.

He condemned the Senate’s decision to approve the bills, saying, “We view it as a deliberate effort to sabotage the economy, increase hardship and further impoverishing the region.”

Mr Husseini expressed concern over the proposed VAT allocation system, noting that states like Lagos, where major corporations such as Nigerian banks, telecommunications companies, and multinational companies were headquartered, would receive the largest share of the VAT.

“Lagos and its environs would account for 80 percent of the VAT collected in Nigeria, leaving northern states with a minimal share,” he said.

He warned that if allowed to scale through, the bill would further weaken northern states, potentially rendering some unable to pay salaries and worsening poverty and hardship.

Before you support this Tinubu Yoruba government fraud called tax reform..

What’s the investment in your state.. or will FDI .. now start rushing down to your states?

This is Tinubu personal agenda to permanently contro Lagos and Nigeria

Ohaneze wey never sight the 400 page bill rush go endorse..
atimes Igbos are their own problem
How will this benefit the entire eastern nation

Why do Igbos always allow Yoruba control their narratives and they come back wailing

God help Nigerians

Arewa to the world

Reality over propaganda
So you just rush to comment. I couldn't see the difference between you and the Aboki in Kano regurgitating falsehoods.
I am sure that you people do not have a single idea of what you are saying.
Exactly what you and your Kano brothers are saying is what the contentious section of the bill is correcting. The sharing of vat would no longer be based on where the headquarters of the companies are but where the goods and services are generated or consumed. Vat on your bank charges would no longer be recorded to have all being made in Lagos, but will be recorded to have emanated from whichever state the customer is based.
So what's the fuse about.

Lagos - Ibadan Express Road, Ibadan - Ife Road, Ife - Ilesha were all once tolled. Road tolling is a worldwide model and not even new to Nigeria, or maybe you are too young to know.

Please tell me again that Davido is wrong...

If we can do this to our fellow Nigerian, what are we going to do to foreign investorshuh

Shouldn't certain things be fixed before we look to attract investors to Nigeriahuh??
Bro, understand me, I'm in no way justifying our current situation in Nigeria, but I can't stand talking ills of Nigeria by foreigners not to talk of a citizen of the country especially someone who has immensely benefited from this country. He may insult the political leaders all he wants, but he must spare the country, Nigeria is bigger than all of them.
Gun violence in United States of America last year is over 40,000, have you heard any American talk about this, so many homeless people in the US, have you heard 50cent come to Nigeria to diss his country.NO.
My point is that our fight is with ourselves, it's not for him to go to foreign country to demarket us. He's hurting us all.
