Buhari is investigating feud between AGF, Magu – Lai Mohammed
ynaija.com

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has said President Muhammadu Buhari is investigating the feud between the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), and the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu.

Mohammed said this during ‘Sunrise Daily’ on Channels Television on Tuesday.

On the reason for the feud, the minister said, “That is what the investigation will bring out. The President is aware and is investigating it. He is the employer of both of them.”

When asked if the feud between both anti-corruption officials won’t affect the war against corruption, he said, “The fact that the AGF and the EFCC chairman do not see eye to eye on the methods or the approach does not mean that both of them do not believe in the ultimate which is that corruption must be addressed.

“If they disagree on approach, then the President will look into the matter and make his pronouncement. He will ask why the AGF is taking such a position and why the EFCC chairman is taking another position.

“This, to me, is a purely administrative matter and if it is not, Mr President will take appropriate action.”

Recall the AGF Malami had blamed Magu for Nigeria’s suspension from the Egmont Group, an international anti-corruption body with over 135 member countries.

He had directed him to send complex cases to the AGF for prosecution.

• Minister reveals role Tambuwal, Wamakko played

The plots that cost Dr. Goodluck Jonathan the 2015 presidential election were mainly planned, hatched and perfected in Sokoto, the seat of the Caliphate.

This revelation was made by Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, when he paid a courtesy visit on Governor Aminu Tambuwal, at the Government House.

He said Nigeria would have been worse off economically if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had won the presidential election.

The former governor of Rivers who was in Sokoto to present a keynote address at the 15th National Council on Transportation said: “I have been to Sokoto severally, especially in 2015 during our struggle to change Nigeria. Sokoto played a very critical role in that struggle. The then governor, Aliyu Wamakko and then Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, worked together and closely with us to ensure we achieved our objective.

“The two of them moved with us to the APC; they were equally part of the new Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). I recall my conversations with Tambuwal when we moved to APC. I had told him that we had moved and he asked whether I was the only one. I told him that I moved with the governors, but he inquired if his governor, Wamakko, equally moved with us. I told him we will issue a statement concerning his governor. As God will have it, the governor himself issued a statement declaring that he was solidly in support of the movement to the APC.

“This meeting today reminds me of all that struggle and our meetings in Sokoto, especially with Wamakko and Tambuwal to strategise for the 2015 presidential election. I must thank him and other Nigerians for that support because the desired change would not have come if they did not come together to support and work for the APC to ensure the emergence of President Buhari.

“The truth of the matter is that as Nigerians, we knew it would have been difficult for Nigeria if PDP had won that presidential election. All of us were scared of what would happen to Nigeria and that was why we decided that the only way to stop what will happen is to ensure that PDP did not win and to God’s glory and our prayers, APC won.

“When I said things would have been difficult, I was talking about the economy. As at that time, if you remember, fuel queues had returned, poverty was coming back, the money stolen was too much that there was no money in the hands of Nigerians, and there was need and desire for a change, and effective change that will safe resources for Nigerians.”

He commended the state government for hosting the 15th National Council on Transportation, saying, the conference will provide avenue to participants to brainstorm on issues and proffer solutions.

He also commended the Sokoto government for completing Sultan Abubakar International Airport and assured that the ministry would complement Tambuwal’s efforts to enhance economic activities in the state noting that transportation served as bedrock of facilitation economy.

“We are in Sokoto to discuss transport policy, the modality in transportation and how to take transportation to the next level. I know that what will interest you is what will happen to your state in terms of railway. The railway line connecting Kebbi, Zamfara and Sokoto is in the pipeline.

“Once we conclude the technical aspect, we will take it to the president for approval. Once we conclude works on these states, the 36 states mandate, which the president gave us, would have been concluded. I was pleased to see that the airport has been completed.

“There are only three of us that were Speakers that governed a state. It is you (Tambuwal), the governor of Plateau State and myself. We must ensure that we did not disappoint the people. The reason is that the experience we gathered in the legislature is enough to govern a state. I am sure that you are going the way they expect you to go and I wish you the very best,” he said.

Tambuwal, who expressed his government’s commitment to cooperate with Federal Government to ensure success of projects and programmes geared toward uplifting people lives to better, urged transport ministry to install more scanners at the Sultan Abubakar International Airport Sokoto to ensure increase safety and screenings.

Nobody wants El-Zakzaky as neighbour, so we built a House for him – Lai Mohammed
thebreakingtimes.com

Lai Mohammed, minister of information, culture and tourism, says Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, leader of Islamic Movement of Nigeria, is not in detention as widely perceived.

He said the Islamic leader is currently staying with his family in a house built for them by the federal government.

Mohammed made this known while speaking on a Channels TV programme on Thursday.

El-Zakzaky has been in custody for years despite court orders for his release.

But the minister said there is no place to release El-Zakzaky to as “nobody wants to accept him as a neighbour”.

“There is a lot of deliberate misunderstanding on El-Zakzaky’s issue,” he said.

“If a judgment is given and that judgment is appealed, you cannot accuse the government of violating a court order if the appeal has not been decided.

“Also, in the case of El-Zakzaky, how many Nigerians know that El Zakzaky is actually not in prison custody nor police custody nor DSS custody? El-Zakzaky is in a house with his family, this is the honest truth.

“The court ruled that he will be released after his house has been rebuilt. Nobody wants to accept El-Zakzaky as a neighbor. So we have been able to build a house, where do we release him to.”

The minister further said that Acting President Yemi Osinbajo maintains constant communication with President Muhammadu Buhari who is away in the UK on medical vacation.

“The acting president is daily in touch with Mr. President so I am very confident that Mr. President is in the full know of what the acting president is doing,” he added.

“And there is so much trust between the acting president and the president; I don’t think that should be an area of concern at all.”

He said although he hasn’t spoken with Buhari since he left the country, the most authentic news about the president’s health is from Aisha, his wife.

“The president made it clear when he was leaving that the length of his stay will be determined by his doctors,” he said, adding that “the wife came back last week and said the president is recovering very fast… I think that is the best we can say now”.

FACT CHECK: Did Nigerians enjoy ‘total freedom’ under Jonathan?

The government of President Muhammadu Buhari has come under a fusillade of attacks for allegedly being high-handed.

On August 8, protesters, who converged on the Unity Fountain in Abuja to demand that the president either resume office or resign, were assaulted by the police. The president was in the UK, where he was receiving medical treatment, at the time. He returned to the country on August 19.

The action of the police drew the dander of many Nigerians who accused the government of clamping down on dissenting voices.

The administration has also been accused of stifling free speech and intimidating citizens, but did the preceding government perform better in guaranteeing freedom of speech, right to protest and other personal liberties?

CLAIM: NIGERIANS ENJOYED TOTAL FREEDOM UNDER JONATHAN

Citizen angst was heightened on Wednesday when the military said it was now monitoring social media for hate speeches and anti-security information.

It was against this background that former President Goodluck Jonathan shared a quote on his Facebook page on Thursday to remind Nigerians that they enjoyed “total freedom” under him.

“I am the most abused and insulted president in the world, but when I leave office you will all remember me for the total freedom you enjoyed under my government,” the quote read.

But did Nigerians enjoy total freedom under Jonathan? This is not true because individuals and groups perceived to be opposed to his government got doses of assault and intimidation.

FACT: SECURITY CLAMPED DOWN ON #BBOG

The Jonathan administration did not spare the BringBackOurGirls (BBOG) group a quarter. In May, 2014 – just a few weeks after the abduction of 276 schoolgirls from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno state, on April 14, 2014 – a citizen movement led by Oby Ezekwesili and Hadiza Bala Usman emerged. The emergence of the group was due the government’s lethargic response to the abduction.

The group began an advocacy for the rescue of the girls. They held daily sit-ins at the Unity Fountain in Abuja. All through their campaign under Jonathan, the police threatened and occasionally used force on them. The police even assaulted Fredrick Nwabufo, TheCable journalist, in one of the group’s sit-ins.

To extirpate the movement and its advocacy, Joseph Mbu, who was police commissioner of the federal capital territory at the time, on June 3, banned all forms of protests and rallies in the city. It was after a mass condemnation of the action that Mohammed Abubakar, former inspector-general of police, lifted the ban.

On May 29, 2014, thugs allegedly sponsored by the government attacked the BBOG group at its sit-in, destroying chairs, cameras and other valuables.

The Jonathan administration also described the group as the advocacy arm of the then opposition party – the All Progressives Congress (APC); hence its clampdown on it.

FACT: ARMY ATTACKED NEWSPAPER VANS

In June, 2014, the Nigeria army began a crackdown on newspapers. Print media organisations in Abuja and Lagos were blocked from distributing their papers to other parts of the country. And this continued for days. The offence of the newspapers was a report by Daily Trust alleging that the army shared out land meant for barracks in Abuja to generals. The report also alleged that “439 beneficiaries in the land sharing are spouses, relations, friends, associates and companies of senior army officers”.

This was a time the government appeared to be losing the war against insurgency. Boko Haram launched attacks without ceasing on soft targets as well as on military formations. It also carried out attacks in the federal capital territory. So, the government did not take critical reports against the military reclining.

Soldiers seized newspaper copies, and the army flooded the offices of media organisations with its men. The offices were ransacked and journalists were harassed.

Although the army gave the lame excuse that it had information newspaper vans were being used to smuggle bombs, no single incriminating item was found in the vans.

FACT: AMINU TAMBUWAL HOUNDED FOR JOINING APC

On October 24, 2014, Aminu Tambuwal, former speaker of the house of representatives, defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. Jonathan took immediate repressive steps to punish him for his action. He asked the police and other security agencies to withdraw Tambuwal’s security.

On October 30, 2014, after speculations, the police confirmed that they had withdrawn the speaker’s security because he was deemed to be an impostor, having joined the opposition.

On November 20, the police besieged the national assembly to prevent Tambuwal from presiding over a sitting of the house. There was pandemonium as the police fired teargas canisters at the speaker and his colleagues who were making their way into the complex. The national assembly was subsequently shut down.

FACT: DSS RAIDED APC DATA OFFICES

On November 22, operatives of the Department of States Services (DSS) raided the data centre of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikeja Lagos.

The DSS claimed it raided the centre because it had information that voter cards were being cloned there. This was in the build-up to the 2015 general election.

The secret police launched further raids on APC data centres across the country, vandalising office equipment in the process, over the same allegation.

However, the service was unable to substantiate it claims even while Jonathan was in power. The raids, which were considered as politically motivated, won public sympathy for the opposition.

FACT: SOLDIERS SHOT AT ‘FUEL SUBSIDY’ PROTESTERS IN LAGOS

On January 1, 2012, the Jonathan administration announced the removal of subsidy on petroleum. The action irked many Nigerians who did not want the burden of paying more for fuel.

Many Nigerians then poured into the streets to protest against the government’s action. There were protests in most parts of the country, but the cynosure of the protest was Lagos.

Citizens converged on Gani Fawehinmi square in Ojota to demand that the government rescind its decision. On one occasion on January 16, soldiers shot at the protesters in a bid to disperse them.

Ademola Ade, a protester, was mauled down by police bullets in one of the rallies.

The government later tempered its decision.

CONCLUSION: FREEDOM NOT ‘TOTAL

It is clears that Nigerians did not enjoy “total freedom” as Jonathan claims. But there is a verisimilitude of truth that citizens enjoyed some level of freedom on social media. Nasir el-Rufai, a member of the APC and Kaduna state governor, used a string of expletives on the former president on social media, but he was not arrested for it. Other members of the opposition also exercised the freedom of critically excoriating Jonathan, but they were not picked up for it.
