Nigerians woke up on Monday morning to news that vice president Yemi Osinbajo, has officially declared his interest in succeeding his principal, Muhammadu Buhari, during next year’s general elections.

Osinbajo, who has served in the position for the last seven years, is already one of the favourites to clinch the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Dr Muktar Muhammed, Presidential Steering Committee [PSC) Head on COVID-19 has said the use of face masks in public places is now optional and other Covid-19 restrictions will soon go.

A light aircraft piloted by Romanian billionaire Dan Petrescu crashed into an empty office building near Milan on Sunday, killing him, his wife and their son, and all five others aboard, Italian media reported.

The single-engine Pilatus PC-12 had taken off from Milan’s Linate airport shortly after 1:00 pm (1100 GMT) headed for Olbia in the north of the Italian island of Sardinia.

It crashed just a few minutes later in San Donato Milanese, a town southeast of Milan, according to aviation agency ANSV, which has opened an investigation.

Witnesses said the plane was already in flames before it crashed into an office building undergoing renovations.

Petrescu, 68, was one of Romania’s richest men. He headed a major construction firm and owned a string of hypermarkets and malls. He also held Germany nationality, the Corriere della Sera newspaper reported.

Corriere and the AGI news agency said Petrescu’s 65-year-old wife, who also had French nationality, and their son Dan Stefano, 30, were killed, as well as a child.

Milan Mayor Beppe Sala and his San Donato counterpart Andrea Checchi headed to the scene.

Deputy prosecutor Tiziana Siciliano was quoted by Corriere as saying that the plane’s black box had been recovered.

The prestigious Eastern group known as Ohanaeze Ndigbo have again come hard on Imo state Governor Hope Uzodinma over his stance on the Nigeria President of Igbo extraction in 2023.

Nigerian Police Command in Edo State has arrested one of its personnel who fired a shot that killed a 25-year-old man, Moses Adam, in Benin City.

According to report the incident occurred at about 4: 08 pm on Friday, September 17, when the late Adam, said to be the only son of his parents, arrived Benin from Lagos to attend his sister’s wedding slated for Saturday.

Spokesperson of the command, SP Kontongs Bello, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, explained that the officer, who is of the anti-kidnap and cybercrime unit of the command, was trying to arrest a murder suspect, Ebuka Nwaechie, when he fired a shot to restrain the fleeing suspect.

Kontongs said that the shot, unfortunately, hit the thigh of one of the passengers in a moving vehicle, adding that the victim was rushed to the Edo Specialist Hospital where he later died.

“The bullet unfortunately hit one of the occupants of a moving vehicle identified as Moses Adam. He was rushed to the Edo Specialist Hospital where he gave up the ghost. The erring officer will go through administrative trial that will determine his culpability,” the statement said.

The PPRO noted that the Commissioner of Police, Philip Ogbadu, was saddened by the incident and condoled with the family of the deceased.

He added that Ogbadu has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of criminal investigation to carry out discreet investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to him, the CP assures the public that he will not hesitate to deal with any erring and overzealous officer who acts unprofessionally in the course of his duty.

He urged the family of the victim and the public to remain calm to allow for a comprehensive investigation.

Police said Nwaechie was allegedly involved in the alleged murder of one Bright Orikose on December 24, 2020.
