So currently Nigeria is running 3 budgets at the same time(2024, 2025 and 2026), yet around October 2025, Tinubu announced to the world that Nigeria had met the total revenue generation for 2025 which was supposed to be 50 trillion as at August, while the CBN governor Wale Edun maybe out of shame or just trying to correct the erroneous statement said that Nigeria had only met 10 trillion out of the 50 trillion projected and even had to borrow 14 trillion to help the budget.

If the opposition is just banking on votes they expect to get at the ballot in 2027 and whatever safeguards they feel are in place to protect said votes, then it's apparent they still don't know the person they're dealing with!

Unless you’re not paying taxes at all—which is itself an offence—the only people who will see any marginal increase are those earning above ₦50m. In reality, because of cost and effort, tax authorities will always go after the big players where they can collect billions in one sweep. That means for the typical Nigerian earning under ₦100m, nobody really has your time yet.

This is about self-assessment, not regular PAYE, which goes to the states. And if you actually read the laws, there are multiple legal ways to structure things so you pay little to no tax up to ₦100m. I honestly can’t think of many countries where income of around $70k is effectively allowed tax-free.

There is a fundamental issue with state electoral bodies and with accountability at the LGA level, among other things that the FG needs to sort out—even where governors are willing to implement reforms. What we really need is a framework that all states must use, one that enforces accountability. For instance, LGA revenues and allocations can be ring-fenced around health, education, and public infrastructure, such that access to additional funding is conditional on demonstrable compliance and accountability—similar, to some extent, to what we have with UBEC.

I see this happen a lot in Nigeria: bold ideas, but the implementation mechanisms or modalities feel completely detached from reality. It’s almost as if the visions were conceived by aliens—because the processes, institutions, and people required for implementation are totally disconnected from the ideas themselves. Beyond the usual problems of poor planning and inadequate resources, the real issue is that those expected to implement these policies are often disconnected, under-educated, and ill-equipped for the task.

Dangote’s call for an import ban appears self-serving, either because local production is costlier or to accelerate capital recovery—otherwise, local refining should be cheaper without transport and insurance costs.
