PoliticsRe: Lagos Earmarks N102 Bn To Build Lekki Int’l Airport by liquid7: 10:30am On May 09, 2011

The path embarked by the Lagos state government is not going to yield immediate fruits the very next day but in the long term its their best bet. Would you rather that the government not embark on projects like this? People complain that attention is not being paid to the basic necessities with such projects but they are silent on how sustainable funds can be generated to cater for the said necessities.

Yeah I have taken a moment to consider and this still is the way to go if you ask me. cheesy
Neither have you stated ,provided a plan or reference or link to show how a new $650m airport should be justified over things companies consider a must in a nation they wish to invest.I think most companies will rather have cheap constant power, good transport network ,good properly outlined tax system and if they so need to fly their goods in are more  content with a cargo terminal which is certainly cheaper then a full blown international airport assuming MM is not up to the task and i am yet to see any evidence that it cannot be if tested to do so and even then plans to improve it can be made.

Gas prices in Nigeria are pretty cheap. I think the guy at Shell I spoke to on the phone said like $5.66 per 1000 Scf. 200 Scf per day is enough to power a 1MW natural gas generator like the one I linked to (according to him.) That is under 5 cents per kWh (roughly 4.7 cents, if my math is correct.) This is enough to compete with most people in the world.

Anyway, it isn't as bad as you make it out, for wealthy businessmen/investors. Nigeria is a ripe market.
gas prices are determined by the international market .its same price as in russia .http://www.enerdata.net/enerdatauk/knowledge/eshop/energy-price-forecast.php?country=russia.same price as you can see.
But even at that no company there will buy gas for power unless it is needed for part of their production since the grid is far cheaper.I know this because an irish friend has started a medium sized factory there and got 2 years free electricity as incentive.

Which brings another point. You cannot expect medium and small companies to spend $$$ millions on power generators as its simply no viable for them.Big guns that can afford it simply wouldn't since they have other countries to choose from that they can get their energy needs directly from grids at cheaper prices and without the inital investment of so much $$$$ for power plants.Add the other factors like roads, corruption and you see its not that attractive.

Nigeria maybe ripe for investment but others are even more attractive.Stable ,less courrupt government = less red tap and bribes, good rail/roads = cheap fast distribution, electricity/water we already covered that  grin
PoliticsRe: How Come Its Only Nigerians Abroad That Are Complaining by liquid7: 9:44am On May 09, 2011
original poster said the right word THOSE that have money in Nigeria.Thats a small minority of Nigerians in a country where 99% is owned by less then 10%.
Rich man in any poor country will not complain .Espically since you can do much more with your money in a poorer country.

I don't think any of these new major guys investing in manufacturing in Lagos/Ogun area are using diesel to generate electricity.

Take a look at how Nestle is doing it for example:
http://www.compassnewspaper.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5127:-nestle-records-n827b-turnover-opens-n36b-tri-generation-plant&catid=37:general-news&Itemid=607

Manufacturing firms are just generating their own electricity from natural gas. This is cheaper than diesel. . . and cheap enough to compete with anyone in the world.
You are actually making my point.Which international multi billion $$ company will bother to come to nigeria when they have to invest in their own power generating plants  when they can simply do it in Ghana and such and get their power supply directly from the grid?
Those that are in nigeria have mostly been there since the 70s and 80s .New investment money will look for a country that has infrastructures already in place for them espically in this current recession.

And how is building your own power plant cheap enough to compete with anyone in the world?Cheaper then getting off the grid?please.if it was all companies around the world would have build their own power generators or you think they been stupid for all this years.Russia even offered some companies free electricity for 2 years for building factories in their country .They can do that because they got abundant energy sources and good distrubution.
PoliticsRe: Lagos Earmarks N102 Bn To Build Lekki Int’l Airport by liquid7: 9:15am On May 09, 2011
people make me laugh saying $700m will not solve the other critical problems.let me put it another way ,it is $700m that will not be spent on roads, hospitals, electricity and schools .Even if it does not solve the problem ,it will help start solving the problem.

As for investment ,it means some folks have zero knowledge of what attracts multi billion cooperations to a country.Firstly,no company will like to build  a factory which has crappy roads and poor rail system because it means slow and expensive delivery of goods .Same goes for electricity.Ever heard of a Ford plant running generators? No its way too expensive .If anything they try find a country which has cheaper electricity cost ,talk less of a country with regular  electricity outrage and forced to use generators.

Companies look for a country with a solid and transparent buisness and tax plan.Nigeria has none of that and bribery is needed due to the corrupt system.works great for oil companies since they can bribe their way from oil spillage and health/safety issues. Not so great for services/manufacturers.Remember virgin ?Remember sky? Both pulled out of nigeria because of this.

Health.Well when nigerian average life span is 47 thats a shame to say the least.

It will take a huge amount of investment to sort this problems and $650m will certainly help that.

Building a airport means jack to any company if other factors are not desirable.Point to one multi billion company that said they will not come to nigeria because they thought MM was inadequate?

Also some pointing out that it will enhance goods and services .Well if thats a problem for cargo planes not having enough slots to land in MM(which its not because i never heard of any cargo company complaining they cannot get a landing slot due to congestion ) then simply build a new cargo terminal and additional runway.

Also in a country with good roads and rail they can move goods much quicker anyhow so a airport 50 miles from another is insignificant.

Jobs?I can assure you there are many better ways to create jobs. Also if MM is been mismanaged what makes people think after building a lekki airport it will not end up the same way.

For a country with one of the worst health care system and hospitals i ever seen ,it amazes me a $650m airport is whats needed. And i have even visited ghanian hospitals and though not euro/US standard are miles ahead of nigeria. You cannot even get a stenting done in Nigeria! you have to go to ghana ,if you don't die trying to get there first!

Long term planning = airport? That is why Nigeria is a failed country .
PoliticsRe: Lagos Earmarks N102 Bn To Build Lekki Int’l Airport by liquid7: 10:47pm On May 08, 2011
future planning is providing constant electricity to enhance buisness, proper schools, good roads of quick transport and safety, good hospitals for good quality of life ,railroads for better haulage etc, water supply, those are priorities of most government .

if we have those then you can talk about more international airports and to my knowledge not one single state in nigeria has achieved all this yet.
PoliticsRe: Uncle Toms In Africa, And On Nairaland. by liquid7: 12:32pm On May 08, 2011
hi,i try to patronize black and espically nigerian buisnesses as much as possible.

but sometimes we nigerians do things to cut corners and maximize profit by doing a bad job.

i have used previously 2 nigerian mechanics and the results has always been fustrating to say the least.last one i used was totally un reliable and yet charged me high prices and would miss out obvious things and break appointments etc.

I will keep trying to support nigerian buisness but also nigerians need to step up their game to provide adequte services .
PoliticsRe: Lagos Earmarks N102 Bn To Build Lekki Int’l Airport by liquid7: 12:23pm On May 08, 2011
$650m will probably solve the problem of electricity in a state,it will build  a few state of the art hospitals,it will create loads of schools ,the list of much more urgent problems is endless.

Nigeria does NOT  still have a single hospital that can met the ALS or ATLS standard(i know this as a fact because i and others could not get approval to teach this essential life saving courses in Nigeria as there was not even one hospital in the whole nigeria we could find that met the criteria even private hospitals.the course we eventually provided was without approval and had to be renamed and even then 75% was theaory due to lack of equipment to demonstrate.).

Yet people here are actually supporting the need for another international airport rather then renovate the existing one.

Next time someone you know has a heart attack or a bad car crash and dies in a hospital i am sure you will look at this white elephant airport and think if its worth it.

Even if you are a multi millionare and don't care about anything then you should care if you substain major trauma on a bad nigerian road because news flash flying you out for treatment is not an option ,what happens in first 2 hours is what matters if you live or die.No plane will take you in such an unstable state abroad for treatment if you even make it to the airport!

Same goes for heart attacks and quite a few other critical things.

Nigerians get your priority right .Supporting a $650m new airport is totally out of priority even if its needed which i am not even sure it is.

i could somewhat agree for a local airport to give people landing a better option for where in lagos to land but an international airport as you agreed is totally unneeded and just a white elephant to chop money.
we have bad roads,no water, power outage, poor hospitals, poor schools ,the list is endless and they want to spent 102b naira on this!

haba nigerians.there nothing elite about B8 i used to have membership there and its like £100 or so for basics if you state you are non UK resident (can't remember how much for uk resident but it was maybe £300pa so i choose non uk as i was spending majority of my time in nigeria then).
And not very hard to get in unless you have a violent criminal past.I know its side tracking but spotted the name and the way it is potrayed like some "elite" club.Clean and nice though.

And are power supply, bad roads and lack of security and infrastructure no longer a problem?

Can someone fill me in here.
well shows you how many problems nigeria actually has.add fuel shortage to that,a  problem i believe gEJ supporters have said was solved.that aside does not mean because there are other problems we should only talk about 1 of them.considering GEJ made a million promises to the people(someone on the forum actually wrote them all out) i don't see why he missed out a big problem in telecommunication.

Expensive as it is, arent people still calling excessively and frivolously anyway? huh

So why would anyone want to reduce Such an easy and quick profit maker?

Practically everybody in nigeria has a mobile phone now, so i dont know if the fees are an inconvenience.
because there is no other choice.you need to call and no i never seen any nigerian speak on the phone for 10 mins in a go talk less of  1 hour.so where is the excess here?
PoliticsRe: Buhari’s CPC Sues Jega, INEC by liquid7: 10:22am On May 07, 2011
i am not even sure buhari won the election to be honest.though GEJ did rig to ensure no run off.as for international observers like usual they took them to see what they wanted them to see.
nigerians voted as usual along tribal/religious grounds and would rather have a southerner ,whose party has given a new meaning to corruption and made life miserable for millions , for another 4 years then a muslim northerner.
he should just forget it and let nigerians rip what they sow.

Until our leaders learn to adopt public interest and not personal one's, things will NEVER change.
sadly this is why i can never support pdp or any of its members.12 years of corruption to the excess and now 4 more years. The price of making a call in nigeria is just stupid.in other countries they even have unlimited land line calls for £15 a month and people can chat for hrs non stop.in nigeria what is land line even!
PoliticsRe: Lagos Earmarks N102 Bn To Build Lekki Int’l Airport by liquid7: 10:07am On May 07, 2011
do we really need another international airport in lekki.MM does not even handle 1/10th the traffic of JFK as it is.why waste money on another airport.all this white elephant projects is bankrupting nigeria even further.
PoliticsWill Gej Address The Mobile Phone Service Cost? by liquid7(op): 10:05am On May 07, 2011
I am yet to see a single promise where GEJ plans to address the cost of mobile phone calls in nigeria.all this companies are sitting in a cartel and making nigerians pay 5-10X cost of calls compared to many countries.
i am not even talking about contract phones like uk where u can get 600 free minutes permonth+internet+unlimited text and a free BB 9800 for £25 a month thats aout 6,500 naira if you sign a contract for 24 monthss as nigerians will abuse the system but simple pay as you talk sims .
in uk u can get 3000 minutes for £20 thats about 5,000.Can you even dream to talk for 300 minutes for 5000 naira in nigeria talk less for 3000 minutes .
I think GEJ should call all phone companies together and force them to have a maximum charge per minute and if they refuse ,revoke their contracts and get new companies in and do what the russians did when they wanted to take over the gas/oil supply from non russian companies ,make them leave their equipment behind .

there was a program which basically was entitled "lagos most expensive slum in the world" and it did say smilar about people building houses worth 50m naira in a place where next to it is a gutter, mechanic ,you name it and thats basically how lagos is.
personally i would never buy or build in lagos.its over saturated and not worth it anymore.you are far better off spending that sort of money in abuja .

What am saying is we are so into our selfs, That breaking up may not be as easy as u think
he knows what he is saying because anyone who has comes from niger delta will probably have heard some group or other mumbling about break up and they always say either a break up to niger delta or even break up to tribal level.

once you start this break up of nigeria rest assured there is NO way the niger delta will stay because they will see an chance to get rid of ALL non oil producing tribes from the picture. This will be yugoslavia all over again when 1 state breaks away then others follow.

Those who think it will be a simple 2 way split are just joking.Thinkabout it this way why on earth would niger delta want to share the oil money with igbos or yorubas?
The only thing that will hold those niger delta tribes together is because they all share the oil lads and will want to keep it as a strong oil power rather then very small unsecure countries .They don't need igbos or yorubas for that

split nigeria and be prepared for at least a 4 way split no less.
PoliticsRe: Who Will Suffer If Nigeria Breaks In North And South by liquid7: 12:12am On Apr 24, 2011
all will suffer because the south will then fight itself because the niger delta will not want to share oil revenues with the igbos and yorubas.
once division starts it will never end.
also from niger delta region.
PoliticsRe: How Do You Want Nigeria Sliced? by liquid7: 12:41pm On Apr 23, 2011
nigeria can never divide as long as there is oil.
just go thru most of the post you see everyone trying to pair their tribe with oil tribes.igbo+niger delta, yoruba+niger delta etc etc.
even the states as they stand now are not based on tribes, look at delta for instance.even the state and capital was created because mariam babaginda wanted her place to have a capital ,asaba in an oil region.
it will never happen.so best learn to live together and improve the country you have
PoliticsFor All Those Screaming To Divide North/south by liquid7(op): 12:21pm On Apr 23, 2011
Nigeria was created out of many tribes been combined into 1 country.
for those who are screaming for division .why should it be into south/north?tribally in the south we have many different tribes.
economically maybe the niger delta have a reason to be a country to maintain themselves as a big voice in the oil industry despite been from many small tribes .but why would they want to be in the same country with ibos or yorubas ?they will likely dominate and still be taking the oil share.
honestly any divison in nigeria can only lead to civil wars and further breakways.
better to stick it out and try and repair what we have been for decades and become a powerful force again in africa.
