Politics › Re: South-East Presidency: I Should Be The Front Runner, Not Peter Obi - Dave Umahi by Lithiumite: 8:05am On Aug 18, 2025 |
fnep2smooth: As a devoted supporter of Peter Obi and the ideals he represents for Nigeria's future, I have a strong reaction to Dave Umahi's recent statements about Southeast governors supporting President Tinubu's re-election. Let me break this down with clarity and evidence:
1. The Myth of "Unanimous Support" in Southeast Umahi claims "all five governors" back Tinubu, but this ignores critical realities: • Partisan Divide: Three Southeast governors aren't from the APC (Enugu-PDP, Anambra-APGA, Abia-LP). Their parties haven't endorsed Tinubu, making Umahi's declaration presumptuous . • Grassroots Disconnect: Obi won the Southeast decisively in 2023. Governors' political maneuvering doesn't reflect the people's will—evident in Obi's continued mass rallies despite government restrictions . • Intimidation Tactics: APC governors like those in Edo and Benue have banned Obi from visiting, fearing his influence. This contradicts Umahi's "100% support" narrative .
2. Tinubu's "Favor" to Southeast: Reality vs. Rhetoric Umahi boasts of Tinubu's infrastructure projects, but scrutiny exposes imbalances: • Neglected Priorities: Critical Southeast projects like the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway and Port Harcourt-Enugu rail are *decades* overdue. Completing them isn't generosity—it's basic governance . • Regional Disparity: The ₦15 trillion Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway (toll-ready by December 2025) benefits Southwest/South-South disproportionately. Meanwhile, Southeast remains underserved . • Appointment Tokenism: Tinubu naming Umahi Works Minister (first SE appointee) is a tactical move, not transformative inclusion. The Southeast still lacks key national security/economic roles .
3. Obi's Unmatched Cross-Regional Appeal Umahi urges Igbos to "support other regions" for future presidency, ignoring Obi's proven viability: • 2023 Proof: Obi outperformed Tinubu in *12 states*, including Northern strongholds like Nasarawa and Southern hubs like Edo. His appeal transcends ethnicity . • Threat to Tinubu: APC fears Obi because he splits Tinubu's Southern base. In 2027, Obi could dominate the Southeast/South-South and erode Tinubu's Northern votes—forcing reliance on rigging . • Ethical Contrast: While Umahi brags "God used me," Obi's pledge for a *single term* prioritizes national healing over power retention—a stance even activists endorse .
4. The Fatal Flaw in Umahi's "Re-engagement" Theory His call to "support other regions" for Igbo presidency is dangerously naive: • History Lessons: Jonathan (South) was denied a second term despite zoning norms. Power isn't "given"; it's earned through principled resistance . • Obi's Strategy: Building a multi-ethnic movement—like his Sokoto/Lagos campaign teams—is how Igbos gain presidency. Not through subservience to failing incumbents . • Tinubu's Vulnerability: With Northern discontent rising (Kwankwaso attacking him) and economic turmoil, 2027 is winnable for Obi. Surrendering now betrays generations .
Conclusion: Obi’s Path vs. Umahi’s Subservience Umahi’s speech reveals a troubling shift: from governor to Tinubu’s apologist. His "performance" boasts (e.g., Ebonyi roads) pale against Obi’s Anambra legacy—cleared pensions, education reform, and fiscal prudence without fanfare. True Igbo leadership isn’t begging for scraps at Tinubu’s table; it’s uniting Nigerians under a vision of justice and competence. Obi embodies this. When Umahi claims "we can’t get presidency by sentiments," he mistakes principle for naiveté. Obi’s 6.1 million votes prove otherwise—and in 2027, we’ll prove it again.
"Leadership isn’t about self—it’s about the people." – Dave Umahi . We agree. That’s why Peter Obi fights. Really wonderful analogy by you I must confess,I really posited your analogy eruditely and it's thought provoking.i honestly would give you that and also obi his accolades for what he has achieved so far, that is what makes us different from obidients as we always try to be objective in our views,we will always acknowledge your positives.however,I beg to differ. Obi beating asiwaju and atiku in some states in 23 was majorly based on ethno religious factors, his SE base, xtians in the SS and NC who were averse to the Muslim muslim ticket and were miffed by the continuos effrontery of the terrorists, bandits and Fulani herdsmen which were prevailing monstrosities at the time......the other huge chunk amongst the youth especially in urban centers were protest votes against the APC and buhari's negative policies at the time such as the currency change, fuel scarcity etc which brought horrendous suffering on the masses......the bulk of his elite support was from the renegades from Tinubu's party who were in power at the time and were Opposed to Tinubu's emergence so obi was only a counter strategy to divide the southern votes to entrench northern hold onto power through atiku despite buhari's 8 years and obi took the bait. 2011 and 15: tinubu never ran against GEJ even when he had the opportunity and the right to do so,he rather brought a weaker candidate in the person of ribadu the current NSA against GEJ in 11 and covertly supported GEJ in that election,I was personally aware of this as that was the party decision at the time and we all got the directive......he seized the opportunity of the groundswell of resentment from the north and the anger of the masses against the way the economy was being managed, you can't negate that because he as a politician also had his ambition and interests which he had a right to pursue,it wasn't anyone's fault if GEJ couldn't manage the precarious situation effectively to his advantage. Supporting other regions: obi was a dark horse in 23 and his supporters a d his region made obi a direct attack on the system and establishment, pls note that this isn't wrong in anyway and they had their right to buy this was rebuffed by the majority as the obi strategy was seen as counter productive and too deviant more like "a bull in a china shop"at the time anybody not supporting obi was an enemy"and still been viewed by many of us till this day.......he needs to change strategy of coercion by his supporters and be more tactful in his approach. Subservience isn't what umahi and the likes of other SE politicians supporting tinubu are doing,it's just basic political strategy and self preservation......confrontation as obi has chosen is only counter productive and makes obi not to be trusted by many who were averse to his emergence in the first place. |

ElevationD: How many Governors have we had in Nigeria since independence, with this your talk of “hundreds of governors”. Tinubu equally was a governor. His slogan was “I built Lagos”. Or have you quickly forgotten that? Those of you who supported and still support him claimed that he would replicate Lagos in the federal level? If Tinubu did not make all the noise, how did he amass the followership? How do you people reason?
Did you read and think before engaging here? ..’being a gov for 2 terms doesn’t equate to having the skill set…”? What qualified Tinubu to become the President, aside from this same comment of yours? If he could be the President after 2 terms, what stops other better candidates? Or your criteria is the ability to loot the treasury with reckless impunity? What has politics got to do with intergrity and accountability?
So you did not even have an idea about Kwakwanso’s political sojourn when you jumped to refer to him earlier? So you are not aware that Kwakwanso moved from PDP to APC, back to PDP, now NNPP and waiting on the fringes to go back to APC? You are not aware that Tinubu decamped from AD to AC, turned to ACN and now APC? You call LP a small party and yet the same “small party” scored over six million votes in the last Presidential election?
…same way he left apga in the cold just because he felt challenged..”. Did Tinubu not leave AD in the cold? Have you been following political events in this country since 1999? Are you so young that even if you have not followed physically, you could easily read and make researches?
Have you not been fooled with your two eyes opened following Tinubu on complete empty stomach, with uncountable failed promises? By the way, while you hope on his promises, he lives his life in complete opulence. When will you wake up from your opened eyed abracadabra? This isn't a dick measuring contest and no one is trying to drag you under the bus.....tinubu left AD to go form his own party so as to effectively propagate his ideology and espouse his political interests,it metamorphosed into ACN so as to accommodate more members from other parts of the country and to give it a national outlook but it still is Tinubu's party,we all know the story of APC.....which party has obi formed, does ADC in any way if you are being honest with your self represent what obi is believed to stand for....there are people still remaining in PDP despite all it's travails. RMK we all know left the APC because of his feud with his gov,a seating gov who's the leader in his state.....which LP leader is pushing obi out? Obi himself his and must be the leader,he should own up to his responsibilities rather than shy away from them. Go and check the records and see how many 2 terms govs we have had in Nigeria.....obi is only basking in the euphoria of tribalism, buhari's abysmal performance and the misguided sentiments of the uninformed....Buhari made obi happen and tinubu would see to it that he is kept in his place. |

ElevationD: But you can keep on making excuses for Tinubu/APC and the 11 years non stop of hardship and misery imposed on the country?
Stop making mockery of yourself here. Except you had been living in Sambisa forest before now with no means of communication, how did you not know that Kwakwanso has been having issues with the leadership of NNPP? How is it that you are not aware that at some point, he was expelled by those who he engaged in battle with in the party? Or you think that Tinubu had an easy ride in APC before he became the candidate? You think that the scream “emi lokan” was a joke? Or you did not know that it was born of out his frustration and the attempt to foist another candidate on the party as the flag bearer?
If Obi did not have leadership qualities, how did he become a governor and ruled for two terms? If he did not have the quality of the leader, how did he become the candidate of LP within such a short time and score such votes as he did? He is not a leader, yet crowds follow him around shouting “na our papa be this”? Are you having a different definition of a leader from other better informed people? If he failed as a candidate, how is that an issue? Buhari tried multiple times until he won. What’s the issue there please? He did not have leadership qualities, yet APC kept shouting Buhari’s northern 12 million votes even after he vacated office. Hundreds of govs have achieved Obi's feat without noise, being a gov for 2 terms doesn't equate to having the skill set to run a complex country like Nigeria.... Obi isn't giving out any of such aura,he is proving to many of us that he is incapable and totally inept with his style of politics......having millions of followers doesn't equate to good leadership, Buhari had 12 million but what did we get, a disaster, obi is proving to we same people he doesn't have the capacity. Kwakwanso despite the problems you said he had has still not left his party, his political identity still remains intact and you know where to look when you need him but not obi....a party as small as LP with just one state gov,obi can't show character and steer it to stability and glory, same way he left apga in the cold just because he felt challenged. You can follow your obi all you want but as for me I can't be fooled with my 2 eyes opened. |
