Olaskybab:
The minister of health, prof Onyebuchi Chukwu, on Wednesday said Nigeria had already donated $3.5m as part of its intervention in the affected countries.
Chukwu said the sum was made up of $500,000 to each of the countries and the balance to the common ECOWAS Fund for the disease.
He also said 591 health practitioners had volunteered to join the international force that would go to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea to help in the containment of the Ebola Virus Disease.
He said the volunteers registered with his ministry at three points in Lagos, Abuja and Port-Harcourt.
Chukwu said this while speaking with State House correspondents at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.
He said that he had already told a recent meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on EVD of Nigeria’s readiness to help the three countries.
He said, “I informed the United Nations General Assembly that the President has already directed the Federal Ministry of Health to train and send health personnel to these three countries in the area of special laboratory work to strengthen capacity in those countries.
“I also informed them that as part of Nigeria’s contributions to the international team that will be set up to tackle Ebola Virus Disease in those countries, already Nigeria volunteers from different health professions have been registering with us, willing to join the international force that will go to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea to help out with the containment.
“As of now, 591Nigerians have already registered with us in three registries we opened in Lagos, Abuja Port Harcourt.”
The minister however said there were certain conditions to be met before the volunteers would be allowed to leave the country.
He said the first step was for President Goodluck Jonathan to approve their journey and mission and that the volunteers would be properly trained according to Nigeria’s standards, which, he said, was fairly high.
Chukwu said he also told the meeting, which was called to review the global situation on the disease that Nigeria is now Ebola-free. He said the country had had 19 cases with seven deaths contrary to the 20 cases being reported by the foreign media.
“Presently there is no single case of active Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria, no single contact that is presently under surveillance in any part of the country,” he declared.
He said the ban on repatriation of corpses as well as inter-state movement of corpses was still in force, adding that the ban remained except where approval had been granted by the Minister of Health.http://www.punchng.com/news/nigeria-donates-3-5m-to-liberia-others/
PoliticsRe: Can A Woman Be The President Of Nigeria? by lockupman(m): 8:02am On Oct 08, 2014
I don't think it's possible in Nigeria. Our women are fast loosing credibility. They are getting their hands dirty in corrupt practices when they are suppose to show example and turn things around in the country. The likes of Okonjo Iweala, Deziani, etc who would have become role models and therefore set the pace of credible women to emerge have besmirched their reputation by allowing the system of corruption to envelope them. They can't think for the good of the common man. They have blocked opportunities for Nigerians to show case themselves to the world by joining hands with corrupt hands to ensuring that quality health care, education, basic and capital infra structural development elude us in Nigeria. No! They have killed the grounds of positive debate for and behalf of women. Although I've not forgotten the good deeds of our beloved late Dora Akunyili, but I must say that majority of the women who vie for political offices have no definite plan or path for Nigeria's development, either personal or partisan. Talking about Partisan plan, that would definitely override whatever personal development plan one has for Nigeria, it is far impossible with the kind of political parties in Nigeria today. With the kind of women in politics I'm seeing in Nigeria, Aso rock is very far from them. *mythoughts*

GOD BLESS AMERICA

The country that i love and keep close to my heart, a country that your dreams can come true if you are hardworking, a country where you can attend any college or university without a penny in your pocket throught loans and scholarships.

Whao, its amazing this thread is still alive!!!!!, i joined this thread in August 2010 because i was interested in coming to the U.S for graduate studies and potentially become a citizen of this great country...this thread is part of my success story today, the likes of OJAP, SEEDORD, FEMILANGY, FEMI2020 are part of my success story, my strategy was watch, listen and dissect information from this thread and mold it to my benefit, and that worked for me when i went to the embassy for my student visa interview...( check dec 14 2010 for my interview details on the thread).

With that been said, my journey in America has been a success story with a lot of hardwork, optimism, and dynamism. To cut the long story short, i have two masters now and work as an Information Analyst with one of the biggest banks in the world, i never came here with any large money, i was just optimistic, hopeful, looked unto God . Yea, America is not easy like people say (FOR LAZY PEOPLE), but if you are ready to study hard, beleive you me, you will be ok and not lack.

The purpose of my long epistle is to encourgae you guys....(the ones that are really ready to come study and become someone in life), do not let anybody discourage you, follow your heart and passion, i am a living testimony, i landed at JFK with 70 dollars in my pocket in dec 2010 but as of today i make almost six figures/annum working as a SQL DEVELOPER, i never knew anything about I.T while in Nigeria, but because i was determined to be a change agent for my generation, i strived hard, focused on my masters and through the Grace of God, i dont lack anything because am highly contempted with what i have.

P.S

THIS IS A GREAT THREAD, IT CHANGED MY LIFE AND SOME FRIENDS' LIVES, DO NOT COME TO THE THREAD WITH THE "I KNOW ALL MENTALITY" RATHER, COME HERE TO ASSIMILATE INFORMATION. THANK YOU ALL AND BEST OF LUCK.
TravelRe: On Nigerians And The 'must Travel Mentality' by lockupman(m): 10:01pm On Sep 28, 2014
Bros you now have every exposure to make things happen in naija with 11 years experience? It's no joke bro. Me I just wanna stay for only 42 years more AFTER my PhD then I will come back to contribute to naija's development.

mrmetoo1: Interesting topic!!
I'll start by saying there's absolutely nothing wrong travelling abroad. I kinda wish every Nigerian somehow in their lifetime could travel somewhere and live there for at least 1-2 years and come back. Its called exposure whether good or bad it just opens your eyes to certain things.

Now something I can't stand is Nigerians that travel abroad and start acting all high and mighty. The fact of the matter is most of you did NOTHING to make those countries the way they are. As someone said in one of the responses if the citizens of those countries come and take over Nigeria today, in 5yrs they'll turn Nigeria to those countries and if Nigerians were to take over those countries today, in less than 3 years those countries will be like Nigeria. A Nigerian looking down on Nigeria is like a babe that's dating an older rich man with a family and looking down on a babe dating/supporting a young guy still trying to get himself together. The truth of the matter is, with the right support and hard work the struggling guy could become tomorrow's billionaire.

Nigeria is crazy I can't even lie, its insane but like someone else said Nigerians could be intellectually lazy. Nigeria has loads of problems but there are always solutions. Most people however are not interested in problem solving. There are few young Nigerians that have been exposed to the way things work in more developed countries and move back to Nigeria to help implement these things. E.g "Flying Doctors" the idea was born out of her sister being sick and dying due to the lack of the proper infrastructure. Now she could have just shaken her head, packed her load and vowed never to come back to Nigeria again but from there she recognized a problem and got to work on how to solve it. Another example is Jumia, I met one of its ex-executives in NY, now by all means this guy was doing very well in NY but he saw an opportunity/problem in Nigeria, got to work and helped create a very successful brand. Njoku (Irokotv) is another example and many others.

I lived in the US for 11 years and I'm back here and my focus is real estate. I already have a couple of building projects I'm working on but my goal is to develop houses where people get what they're paying for. Again identifying a problem and working on a solution. I was looking at renting a house, my budget was 2.5m - 3.5m kinda trying to match what I was paying in Dallas. Now problem with that is you almost cannot find anything close in terms of quality, design, finishing and so on. You see some kitchens and bathrooms and you just want to weep. Now many Nigerians, not all, don't see these things. I saw something close to how my place in Dallas looks in Lagos and rent was $60k/annum, that to me is ridiculous. Funny thing about this is, it doesn't necessarily cost more to get the quality/design/finishing you'll get abroad, sometimes all it takes is paying attention to details and making sure you're on top of it. Haven homes/Grenadine homes is a company right now that's doing well as far as quality of their homes and sensible pricing, my plan is to beat them both in quality and pricing.

So just to finish this off, nothing wrong in living in a more developed country as a matter of fact I recommend it but don't go there and start acting like you're better than people you left behind because you were lucky enough to get a visa. If all the brilliant minds left the US during the depression for greener pasture without looking back, the US won't be there today for some of you guys to run to. Let's identify problems in our country and try to solve them. No one is saying its going to be easy, believe me there are days I just want to book a flight and go back. At the same time, I look at what I've been able to achieve and what the future holds, the kind of people I've been able to meet here and do business with and then shake off any regrets and keep going. Truth is, I don't pray to have to go back and live in the US, I want to be successful in Nigeria and provide my own solutions to problems.

SamSara01: Friday 5th of September will make it exactly 3 months I passed out of service. I'm a 1st class holder and the best graduating student of my department and faculty in a reputable public university in the south-west but I'm currently unemployed. Of course, my cause of worry does not major on being currently unemployed, but majors on how the hope of getting a job soon seems so deem. More worrying is how professionals, lecturers, friends, family and everyone else alike kept and keep singing to my hear how so easy it will be for people like me to secure not just a job but a very good job. As it is, I don't seem better off than someone who spent every single night at a night club while I was burying my head in books during my school days. How do I motivate an aspiring student who thinks what I'm carrying is the gateway to success? If this has been the tale of people like me, then 1st class honour has truly been over-hyped in Nigeria.

Consoling yourself. Whether you admit it or not, deep down inside you, you know there's a vacuum. That's not the kind of life you wished for but life only took its twist on you. It's cool to console yourself and move than just giving yourself high BP and feeling sorry for yourself at the same time.

vivalableue: I like that list!!! Great Job OP!!!! and its seriously for the ladies who really want to settle down in life.

However, I have my 2 kids, they have their father, and I'm very happy single. I went through a couple of bumps these past few years, but if you think about it, the only reason women are "supposed" to want to settle down is to have kids. So, if that's you, and you want to conform to what society tells you is good, then go ahead sha!!! I am always happy whenever I see my gfs get engaged, married, have kids, etc. We push each other to be successful financially, and I personally love the freedom that being single affords. I can purchase anything without having to consider another person, I can go wherever I want to go. I can decorate my house, choose my church, choose my food, everything according to my tastes, and not have to deal with another human being bringing headache to my life. I had my son, and then my daughter, I work in my career, starting business, home everything, why do I need a man again? And, in case of my own intimate desires pop up, which they do, I simply go and date the marvelous gentlemen in my city who aren't looking for anything too serious, they end up being great business contacts as I don't go about burning bridges!

The fact that I am making, is that it's not someone else's responsibility to make you happy. Being joyful, prayerful, full of gratitude and grace, loving at all times, showing compassion, and truly pursuing your god-given destiny are ACTIONS we must all take, no matter the social, economic or geographic situation we are in!!!!

@Ptoocool. May God bless u sir for this brilliant piece. As if you know my mind. I feel sorrowful for this country with the zig zag way things go. I have shared this piece on fbk for pple to read. I have also the link on twitter.

Ptoocool: BBA sponsored by
Coca-Cola: $300,000 (N48m). MTN Project Fame: N7.5m & SUV. Etisalat’s Nigerian Idol: N5m & multi-million naira contract. Glo naija sings: N5m & SUV. Gulder ultimate search: N10m plus endorsements & SUV.

COWBELL Mathematics competition: N100k. Lagos State Spelling Bee: N50k. School scrabble: N25k. Cool-FM spelling game: A goodie bag filled with Amila drink. And someone is asking why there is so much failure in WASSCE?” That was a message I received on my phone some days ago.

My friend, Ayodele Adeyemi, told me a similar story recently. Someone saw the brilliance of his daughter and told her that she would be a doctor. The girl said no: She would be a musician. The person was surprised.

That story is not strange today. If you ask children in primary school or even secondary school whom would they like to be like in future, they would mention Davido, Whizkid, Omawumi, Don Jazzy, Genevieve Nnaji or Ali Baba. It is a good thing that our entertainment industry has become a source of pride to our nation and a source of livelihood for thousands of youths. Youths who could have been at jobs they hated or even derailed into crime have found themselves happily and richly employed. Rather than being mocked by society, they have become a source of envy and admiration. But therein lies the problem…

Since the entertainment industry has become a money spinner and a glamorous industry, every child wants to be in it. But, why not? Currently, the TV programmes with the highest prizes are in music or entertainment. Unknown faces become celebrities almost overnight. Their mates watch such transformation and are filled with envy and admiration. Children watch their intelligent uncles and parents go unnoticed, uncelebrated and impoverished, while entertainers – many of whom are not particularly book-intelligent – become the stars of the day.

On the contrary, how many big-budget programmes or prizes are dedicated to rewarding excellence in creativity or the like? Very few. The NLNG Prize for Literature was virtually the only big prize until recently when Etisalat Prize for Literature came on stream.
The doctors, lecturers, teachers, etc are frequently on strike over pay and conditions of service. Nigerian writers have to move to the United States or the United Kingdom to be appreciated.
Beside entertainment, politics is the other field that is very attractive because of the direct and indirect money that oozes out of it as well as the glamour that goes with it. It is more rewarding – financially and socially – to be a local government chairman than to be a professor. If you are lucky to be a senator, a minister or a governor, you are made for life! Beyond amassing a lot of money, you are also initiated into the political circle, which ensures that even when you leave office, you are made an ambassador, a chairman of an agency or the like. You would not like to go back to the university, your medical practice or whatever you were before. As a doctor, an engineer or lecturer, your money comes in trickles, but as a senator or governor, it drops into your account like a bomb regularly.
But if you can’t be a politician, why not be an entertainer?

President Goodluck Jonathan may not feel cool when shaking an
engineer, computer scientist or professor, but when he is shaking hands with a musician like D’Banj or an actress like Genevieve, you will notice that his smile will be broader. Why? He is shaking hands with a star. Unlike before when our entertainers just had enough to take care of their basic needs, today’s entertainers earn up to N5m for a 10-minute solo rendition of two of their songs on stage. For those who have up to four shows per month, even if they earn a million naira per show, that gives them N4m monthly. Many CEOs of top companies don’t earn that. And this amount excludes the money made from commercials, endorsements, celebrity appearances, fees to act as a judge at shows, album sales, and any other private businesses the celebrity is involved in.

So, it is not surprising that many of our young ones want to be entertainers. In their views, excluding the money and glamour in entertainment, it does not look as strenuous as reading and sitting for exams to be a pharmacist or a professor. Being a musician is fun. You stand on stage (in the limelight) while others huddle together in darkness, watching you. You don’t need to have all A’s or come first in your class. But once successful, you overshadow your siblings and parents. Your parents and siblings are identified from your standpoint: Omawumi’s mother, Omotola’s husband, Okocha’s sister. You travel from one city to the other or from one country to the other, stay in the best hotels, eat the best foods, and drink the best wines – all the time.
No wonder, parents railroad their children into entertainment. They organise three or four of them to sing, put it in CDs and send the children to filling stations and shopping malls to sell the CDs. Some parents push their children to participate in all music competitions in the land. Those who are wealthy use their wealth or connection to push their children to be featured regularly in the media.

At the auditions of reality shows, there is no manner of people you won’t see. Even those who croak like toads participate, believing that they are the next “Tu Baba” or “PSquare.” It is all because of how lucrative the entertainment industry.
TV stations have also caught the virus. While new all-music channels and programmes are springing up, almost all the local channels have dedicated the hours of 12 noon to 2pm to music.
It is a great thing that our entertainment industry is booming. Many African countries are envious of our achievement, but we need to emulate the US in our national development. The reason the US is different is that it is not a one-product economy. While it is the headquarters of entertainment in the world, it is also the headquarters of academic excellence and research. It consciously encourages its doctors, engineers, scientists, lecturers, broadcasters, writers, etc, to be the best by providing a wonderful environment. It does not create the impression that a senator is better than a professor by paying the senator higher than the professor, or giving the senator more recognition than the professor.

Even though it glamorises the actor or musician, it does not give the actor or musician any impression that he is better than the police constable or primary school teacher. Politics is not made so lucrative that every media person prays to be appointed a politician’s press secretary. Many broadcasters actually earn more than politicians; so politicians can’t talk down on them or buy them over. The street cleaner does her job with pride. She knows that one day she can write a book on strategic street cleaning and it will become a bestseller that earns her millions of dollars and fame. She does not need to become a musician, a politician, a contractor, or a girlfriend to a politician before she can become successful as a street cleaner.

That is how a robust economy is built. It is an economy in which people have the potential to excel, to be rich and get national recognition in whatever field they operate in. That way, children who have the proclivity for research or teaching are not discouraged by such fields’ low-rewarding prospects and get lured into music or acting. Those who will sing will sing. Those who will act will act. But the nation must not make those who should be in other fields to jump into entertainment or emigrate, just because they believe that their natural field is unappreciated.

Even my gf keeps complaining anytime she see's me uploading pictures on fb...she says i am trying to woo someone. She gets jealous a lot Especially when am smiling with her friends(uhhuh)

Women claimed that cute guys are hardly faithful to their partners which apparently underscore their sense of judgement.

I always warn my younger sister to desist from mingling with those single friends of hers, they would lead her into temptation and advise her wrongly. You are so on point dearie.

KanwuliaJara: Single people have NO business hanging out with married people!
Nothing in common!
They should only meet in PUBLIC places like social gatherings!
The sentiments cannot be avoided.

Even if the married people ACT LIKE MARRIED PEOPLE. . . .which comes naturally. . .THE SINGLE PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS COMPLAIN!
Making innocents statements which bring up HUSBAND AND CHILDREN. . .will ALWAYS CAUSE FEELINGS OF INSECURITY WITH THE SINGLE PEEPS!

The reason I AVOID THEM!
THE SINGLE WOMEN ARE THE VERY WORST!!!!
You can never totally feel free to discuss your life WITH THEM without sounding like you are 'pitying' them or making them feel 'inadequate'!
Even if you say to them. . .I CAN'T WAIT FOR MY HUSBAND TO COME BACK FROM WORK. . . or I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE KIDS TO COME BACK FROM SCHOOL. . . . Ha! You are mocking them because they are single.

NANSENZZZZZZZZZZZE!!!

Yes. . . some married people MEAN TO DO JUST THAT! Their prerogative!
STAY ON YOUR OWN OR GO OUT WITH ONLY SINGLE PEEPS!
Period! kiss

I DON'T ENTERTAIN THEM IN MY HOUSE. . . . . ESPECIALLY THE FEMALES. . . .I get extremely irritated by their 'sme-sme' nonsense! I don't wanna cuss them out with all that 'self-pity' and 'insecurities' going on within THEIR BODIES, MINDS AND SOULS!
If I were single. . . I WILL NEVER HANG OUT WITH ANY MARRIED WOMAN! NEVER!!!!! I WOULD NOT GIVVVVVA A QUARTER OF A PHOCK WHAT SHE GAT EITHER! Na me sen dem 'marriage message'? undecided Soooooooooooo, why should I CARE? undecided

Sheeeeeeeeeesh!kiss

PropertiesRe: COREN Wants Death Sentence For Owners Of Collapsed Buildings by lockupman(m): 12:13pm On Aug 17, 2014
I was believing that Engineers had brains to not only think of Engineering but also think and analyse social issues until I saw this post. This is barbaric and cruel.

Omooba77: As part of moves to sanitise the building and construction industries to minimise building collapse and shoddy construction jobs, the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, has stressed the urgency for a law to make owners of buildings that collapse as a result of using quacks or cheap materials and kill people to be visited with capital punishment.President of the institution, Kashim Ali, likened the situation to that of medical doctors who were charged with murder if, as a result of carelessness or quackery, they cause the death of their patients. He spoke yesterday at a news briefing to herald the 23rd Engineering Assembly scheduled for August 19 and 20 in Abuja as part of COREN’s efforts to update members’ knowledge, share ideas on emerging issues in engineering and to network. Its theme is “Commercialising Engineering: An Imperative for National Development.”Noting that he was underscoring the need for a major deterrent such as death penalty for building collapse in Nigeria because they were thoroughly embarrassed by the incidence, Ali said: “We have advocated that anybody who builds a house or structure that collapses and kills people should be killed. So, if that law is there, people who are not trained will not venture into it. If somebody who is a doctor commits quackery and kills somebody, they will charge him or her for murder, but not in the case of collapsed buildings; nobody is charged.“Often, because people who have these structures always have a way around the situation, nobody deals with them. That is why we are urging the National Assembly to go a step further.”He also lamented that although COREN had been using the police to deal with the incidence of building collapse in the past, it had not had the desired impact because “we found that the people who they charged to court were only the poor people. It’s that mason who calls himself an engineer that was being taken to court. The real person who got a million naira project would not go to court.”He explained that it was to find a more capable institution to handle the situation that his organisation decided to partner with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offence Commission, ICPC.According to Ali, their apparent fixation with quackery was because it was the greatest challenge to the engineering profession.Still in pursuance of an industry free of irregularities, COREN has ordered all registrable firms to register with it, saying it was now compulsory and any defaulter would be handed over to the ICPC.“COREN recently signed an MoU with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offence Commission, ICPC, to prosecute people who commit infraction of COREN Act and are not on the register.“Directly connected to the above is the recent order of Council that Registry must commence the licensing of engineering firms to practise in Nigeria.“By this, it is now compulsory for the following categories of engineering firms to procure COREN licence to practice: Engineering consulting firms; engineering construction firms; engineering manufacturing/production firms; engineering maintenance and service providers; engineering inspection, testing and laboratory service firms; and vendors of engineering machineries, equipment, plants and materials, etc”, Ali said.
