January 31, 2012 by Mike Odiegwu and Emmanuel Addeh 19 Comments Four persons were feared dead on Monday in a bloody fight between Fulani nomads and community members along the Bayelsa-Delta area of the East-West Road. Two members of the community were said to have died of machete wounds in the attack. Our correspondents learnt that two members of the community were allegedly shot dead by soldiers deployed in the area to restore peace. It was learnt that trouble started when cattle driven by the nomads invaded farmlands belonging to Ohoro community, Ughelli North in Delta State. The farmers, who were angry over the destruction of their crops by the cattle, were said to have confronted the nomads. A source said the nomads suddenly attacked two of the farmers with daggers, killing them on the spot. Other farmers were said to have cried to their community members compelling the youth to go after the fleeing nomads. A source told our correspondents that the youths combed the area for the nomads in a bid to avenge the killing of their kinsmen. The source said, “The situation is tensed. The people are angry and they are looking everywhere for northerners. Most of the northerners are fleeing the area.” The commotion, however, caused a traffic gridlock along the East-West Road, forcing most motorists and travellers to abandon their vehicles. Another source said the incident led to complete breakdown of law and order, adding that it created panic in the area. It was, however, learnt that the Joint Task Force has taken over the community in an effort to restore peace. The Media Coordinator, JTF, Lt. Col. Timothy Antigha, confirmed the incident, saying nobody was killed by the soldiers. He said, “There was crisis between some Fulani and a community in Delta North. The allegation is that some Fulani people killed two people from that community and there was a breakdown of law and order in that area. But the JTF is at the scene. “Efforts are being made to calm down nerves with a view to commencing investigations in the allegation. It is not true that soldiers shot community persons. I have spoken to the commanding officer and he assured me there was no such thing.” Meanwhile, there was tension in Asaba and neighbouring towns after the news of the Fulani killing of two Ohoro community members broke. http://www.punchng.com/news/fulani-nomads-soldiers-kill-four-in-ndelta/ |

in Jos as bomb meant for church explodes From MARIAM ALESHINLOYE AGBOOLA, Jos Monday, March 21, 2011 • Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section Another major bloodshed was averted in Jos, the Plateau State capital, when two attempts to detonate bombs in two separate locations yesterday failed through divine intervention. However, at least four people died over the botched incident. It was gathered that two men, who were carrying bomb on a motor cycle heading for where to plant it had the device exploded on them around Dualla junction between ECWA and COCIN churches at about 9.45 am when morning services were going on. An eye witness disclosed that one of the two men died instantly while the other was killed by the youths who saw him at the scene struggling to survive. It was disclosed that another passerby was killed by the angry youths who identified him to be of the same tribe with the men that were killed. Daily Sun also gathered that another bomb blast was averted at Mountain and Fire Church, off Murtala Muhammad Way, when men of the Special Task Force, who were going round the church during the service discovered a bomb, which was capable of bringing down the whole building and even those around if it had detonated before it was discovered. Immediately the bomb was discovered the church service was abruptly brought to an end and the area condoned off. Traffic was diverted from Murtala Road towards Constitution Hill Road. The road was not opened until the bomb had been moved to the STF quarters. Meanwhile the Pastor of the ECWA Church at Daulla junction, Rev. Sati Adamu, had in an interview said the youths on the motorcycle could have been targeting the church because of the threats that had been received in the past. It was learnt that the state commissioner of Commerce and Industries, Mr. Nuhu Gagara, was at the church service at the ECWA church when the incident was averted by divine intervention. Daily Sun learnt that some of the youths in expressing their victory over the two persons attempting to bomb the churches displayed cannibalism when they merrily fed on the roasted flesh of the men; passing a limb from one to the other to have a bite. As the news of the bombing was spreading across the city, some angry youths, who took the law into their hands, began to attack a passersby. In parts of Nasarawa where Christians are in the majority, Muslims were being attacked while youths in Muslim dominated areas were also attacking the Christians before the situation was brought under control. The exact number of deaths was not known as at the time of filing the report but it was leant that another corpse was discovered in a well. Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Abdulrahman Akano, who confirmed the incidents, said only two persons died with the explosive and that the two other corpses found were not in relation to the incident. He said four youths had also been arrested in connection with the explosive found near a church. The police boss said investigation was being carried out with a view of ascertaining the motive of the youths. Meanwhile, the presidential candidate, of the Congress for Progressive Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, has suspended his presidential rally scheduled to hold in Jos today. The state police commissioner, who confirmed the suspension, said the rally had to be shelved because of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship campaign to hold in the tin city on the same date. He said because of the situation in Jos, there was bound to be a clash if both parties should hold their rallies. He said when the parties were asked to submit the schedule for their rallies, the PDP had submitted its own earlier and booked the day for the rally. Daily Sun learnt that it took the intervention of the Inspector General of Police Hafis Ringim for the CPC presidential candidate to shelve his rally because he had felt his own should take precedence over that of the governor being a former head of state. |

of Budget: Sanusi has apologised to N’Assembly – Makarfi From NOAH EBIJE, Kaduna Wednesday, February 2, 2011 Sanusi Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section Chairman, Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Ahmed Makarfi has said that Nigerians did not understand the Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, when he (Sanusi) said members of the National Assembly alone were spending 25 per cent of the country’s annual budget. Makarfi, who spoke to journalists in Kaduna at an interactive forum disclosed that he received a letter from Sanusi, in which the CBN boss allegedly apologised to the National Assembly over the controversial 25 per cent and blamed Nigerians for misquoting him. He added the letter also explained that members of the National Assembly were only spending 25 per cent of the overhead cost and not 25 per cent of the nation’s annual total budget. The CBN governor had some time late last year stirred the hornet’s nest when he told Nigerians that members of the National Assembly were spending a total of 25 per cent out of the nation’s annual total budget. This had since generated debate across the country. “CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, did not say that the National Assembly was consuming 25 per cent of the nation’s annual budget. “As a matter of fact, two or three days after his appearance before our joint committee he wrote me a letter officially to voice in that he didn’t say 25 per cent of the nation’s annual budget, he didn’t say 25 per cent of the nation’s total revenue, he didn’t say the nation’s total recurrent expenditure, but 25 per cent of overhead. “Overhead figure treated by Sanusi, when you take it as percentage of the budget itself, will come to about eight per cent of the total budget, the entire nation’s overhead will come to about eight per cent of the nation’s budget. So what he was saying was that the National Assembly was consuming 25 per cent of the eight per cent of the nation’s budget in effect, so 95 per cent is there. It is out of the eight per cent; who is paying what out of the eight per cent, that is where his statement came from. And of course, for a lot of people for different reasons will give different headlines, different conclusions, different analysis to over magnify what he said. “Be that as it may, which is true, and people are right to do so, have raised concern on expenditure of the National Assembly even whatever percentage it may be. This is not limited to Nigeria’s National Assembly. Almost all democracies this debate is going on, in Europe, in Africa, this debate is going on. “As a result of this, the Senate set up a committee which they asked me to chair to find out similar parliaments and what we have discovered so far, first of all, the parliaments are not even willing to give us information about their expenses since it is parliament to parliament, so you can see, this is something generally used to find out about parliaments. “But we will go comprehensively for some developed democracies and there is a different between take home pay and also running cost. National Assembly does not fix its take home pay like every public officer; the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) does that. The National Assembly cannot increase one kobo on top of it. “ The problem is also not to do with National Assembly. When you study the running cost of government, that of the National Assembly is a small fraction, so we are serious about bringing down the cost of running government. We have to look at all arms of government and do something to bring down the cost of running government, all the agencies and corporate bodies. And that exercise is going on. “The Senate president and the speaker of the House had repeatedly made clear that the National Assembly is willing to lead the way in bringing down the cost of running government because we need to tell ourselves the home truth; when something is not sustainable, we say it is not sustainable and that is the position, that is what is going on. “So I have to correct the statement Sanusi made, he didn’t say what exactly you said, and he himself repeated it, but whatever it may be, how much does it cost to run government, and that government is not National Assembly alone, government is all arms, and we are committed to bringing down the cost of running government.” END How to Give Your Woman Earth-Shaking Orgasms.
