Troops of the Joint Force in the Niger Delta, Operation Pulo Shield, have arrested suspected militants and pipeline vandals during their operations in the region.

They also said they recovered guns and ammunition including explosives which the suspects allegedly used to blow off pipelines.

The arrested suspects and the recovered arms and ammunition were paraded at the headquarters of the OPS on Opolo Road, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, on Thursday.

The Commander, OPS, Maj. Gen. Alani Okunlola, said during a news conference that the arrest of the suspects and recovery of weapons were effected during raids on militant camps.

He said the feat was achieved during their operation along Benin River and adjoining creeks in Itagbene, Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State last week.

The suspects’ names according to Okunlola are Mako Ajagidi, a.k.a. Sorsor, Godspower Alebi and Okiti Ariri.

The Commander said the items recovered during the operation were one light machine gun, five AK 47 rifles, one G3 rifle and one LAR rifle.

Others, according to him, were 20 AK 47 magazines, two LAR rifle magazines, 145 rounds of 7.62mm X 39mm special, 299 x 7.62mm NATO ammunition, 273 rounds of 5.65mm ammunition, 10 dynamites and bundles of two detonating cords.

Okunlola said, “The recovery of arms and ammunition is as a result of the raids on suspected militant camps. The operation is a continuous one aimed at recovering all illegally acquired arms that have found their way into the Niger Delta region.”

The OPS commander called on the people of the Niger Delta to key into the outfit’s zero tolerance campaign against illegalities in the region.

He also urged the people to give useful information that would aid the troops of the Joint Force to track and arrest hoodlums.

He reassured the people of the command’s vigour and determination in the fight against crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism and other criminal activities in the Niger Delta.

The running mate to the late Abubakar Audu in the last Kogi governorship election, James Abiodun Faleke, has claimed that some persons believed to be loyal to the newly-elected governor of the state, Yahaya Bello are after his life.

Faleke, who had refused to serve as Deputy to the incoming governor in a series of tweets on Thursday, alleged that his life was in danger.

He asserted that the governor should be held responsible if anything happened to him (Faleke).

He said, “I want to bring to public notice, the continuous threat to my life because of my resolve not to compromise #Audu/Faleke mandate for anything.

“I have to make this threat to my life public because of the loud silence from the security agencies even after sending petition to them.

“For the record, I sent a petition to the IG of Police and DG, DSS on the continuous threat to my life but no response till now.

“No doubt, this is coming from the camp of Yahaya Bello and he should be held responsible if (GOD FORBID) anything happens to me.

“The Lord is my shield and protector, he alone gives me courage and strength, I fear no one but Him. No weapon formed against me shall prosper.

“No amount of intimidation and threat will make me give up the fight for justice and the legal struggle to reclaim #Audu/Faleke mandate.

“This opens up a fresh round of allegations in the camp of the APC in Kogi state as well as between the parties involved in deciding the leader of the state,” he tweeted.

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday commenced a massive search for more assets of those fingered in the disbursement of the $2.1bn meant for the procurement of arms for the military’s fight against Boko Haram insurgents in the Northeastern part of the country.

The Nation is reporting that the commission sent its detectives to Kaduna, Zaria and Sokoto to ascertain the assets of a former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd) and eight other suspects.

Others involved in the case who are standing trial on a 19 count charges include a former Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda; the ex-Director of Finance in the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, Shuaibu Salisu; former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Bafarawa; a former Executive Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Aminu Babakusa and Sagir Attahiru.

Companies fingered in the massive misapplication of funds are, Dalhatu Investment Limited; ACACIA Holdings Limited; and Reliance Referral Hospital Limited.

The report has it that in its bid to track down assets of some of the suspect, the commission has established links with its counterparts in Britain, United States and the United Arab Emirate.

A source in the anti-graft agency reportedly confirmed that it had uncovered more cases of looted funds but the commission might not be opposed to a plea bargain if the suspects are ready to refund all looted funds.

The report said the commission has set up a special committee which is operating in a “restricted” manner because of the “vital” information at its disposal, adding that the committee has identified some choice assets of the accused persons.

The source said further, “After identifying the assets, a team has been sent to Kaduna, Sokoto and Zaria to assess the worth of the properties and put machinery in place to attach them.

“We have also established links with anti-graft agencies in the UK, USA, UAE and some islands where a few accused persons acquired assets.

“Sections 28 and 34 of the EFCC (Establishment Act) 2004 and Section 13(1) of the Federal High Court Act, 2004 empower the anti-graft agency to invoke Interim Assets Forfeiture Clause.

Section 28 of the EFCC Act reads: ‘Where a person is arrested for an offence under this Act, the Commission shall immediately trace and attach all the assets and properties of the person acquired as a result of such economic or financial crime and shall thereafter cause to be obtained an interim attachment order from the Court.”

Section 13 of the Federal High Court Act reads in part : “The Court may grant an injunction or appoint a receiver by an interlocutory order in all cases in which it appears to the Court to be just or convenient so to do.

“Any such order may be made either unconditionally or on such terms and conditions as the Court thinks just.”

The source added that: “All the findings so far are like a tip of the iceberg. We have stumbled on fresh documents on looted funds. But we are investigating all these before inviting those connected for interaction.”

On whether the suspects will be allowed to go free after agreeing to forfeit their assets in a plea bargain, the source said: “Why not? The EFCC may accept plea bargain from those already on trial as long as they are ready to return all the looted funds.

“The money we will get from them is sufficient to cushion the 2016 budget. The fraud is monumental. Nigeria needs money for development and if these accused persons offer to return their loot, it is in the interest of the nation to accept it.”

“But we have not recovered money from any of the accused persons,” the source added.

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Rivers State chapter, has described the Appeal Court judgment, which affirmed the sack of Governor Nyesom Wike, as a birthday gift to the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, Felix Obuah.

A statement issued in Port Harcourt yesterday by the Publicity Secretary of APC in the state, Mr. Chris Finebone, said: “APC is happy to recognise that yesterday is the birthday of Obuah, We are glad to offer him this Appeal Court judgment as a perfect birthday gift.”

The party said it received with satisfaction, the verdict of the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, which upheld the judgment of the Rivers State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which sacked Governor Wike.

According to the publicity secretary, the party considered the decision of the appellate court, to the effect that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not comply substantially with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended), as trite and incontrovertible.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has concluded plans to seek private audience with President Muhammadu Buhari over the statement by former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki indicting him in the fraudulent arms procurement deal.

A source close to Jonathan was quoted as saying the ex-president, will not join issues with the Dasuki, who confessed that that the former president approved the scandalous disbursement of funds meant for the procurement of arms for the military fight the war against insurgency in the North Eastern part of the country, The Nation reports.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday arraigned Dasuki alongside four others before the Federal High Court, Abuja, on a 19-count charge bordering on misappropriation and fraudulent disbursement of funds meant for the procurement of arms.

According to the newspaper, a fresh revelation on Tuesday, has it that some close associates of Jonathan were arranging a private meeting between him and Buhari to enable the former explain some things to the President.

It quoted the source as saying, “Jonathan will prefer a private audience with the President rather than taking up issues with the suspects in public. Some of the expenditures have grave security implications as they involve some neighbouring countries.

“As a statesman, Jonathan cannot just open up at all. For example, there is a unit where the overhead of past Presidents and Heads of State was taken care of. Some of the funds disbursed by the office had to do with these funds. If Jonathan speaks, will he not rubbish these past leaders?

“Some Presidents from some countries sought financial assistance from ex-President Goodluck Jonathan. Do you expect the former leader to issue a statement on such a sensitive request?

“At a point, there was negotiation to end Boko Haram insurgency. This type of deal cannot be put in the public domain.”

The Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, on Tuesday vowed to expose alleged under-hand dealings by its former leader Chief Ralph Uwazurike.

DAILY POST recalls that the MASSOB led by Comrade Uchenna Madu had some days back announced Uwazurike’s expulsion from the group, a situation that made him (Uwazurike) announce that he had changed the MASSOB to Biafra Independent Movement, BIM.

Both groups have been trading words ever since, accusing each other of corrupt practices.

The latest is a text message from Comrade Ibem Ugwuoke Ibem, MASSOB’s National Secretary, which read (unedited):

“The new leader, Uchenna Madu has never collected any money from FG, this a lie from pit of hell to paint our leader black, he spent two yrs with Uwazuruike in DSS detention, Suleja & Keffi prisons from 2005 to 2007 before Uwazuruike was released, Uchenna spent another two yrs before his release.

“As the most closest officer to former leader & image maker, He has vowed to expose all Uwazuruike’s dealings with Nigeria Govt under Jonathan, Ezu River case, The death of Chief Innocent Ogbuehi (former Umuahia MASSOB leader), Immoralities with Married / female students of Owerri etc.

“MASSOB under Uchenna Madu will continue in non violence agitation with other genuine pro Biafra groups. IPOB should not allow drowning man like Uwazuruike & his astrayed BIM to deceive them.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has opposed the bail applications filed by the immediate past National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), and two others before a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja, where they were on Monday arraigned on 19 counts of misappropriation of about N32bn meant for the purchase of arms.

The prosecution, led by Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), in separate counter-affidavits to the bail applications, said the accused persons could abscond if granted bail by the court.

Those arraigned along with Dasuki, before Justice Yusuf Baba on Monday, are a former Director of Finance and Administration in the Office of the NSA, Shuaibu Salisu, and Aminu Baba-Kusa.

Aminu-Kusa’s two firms – Acacia Holdings Ltd and Reliance Referral Hospital Limited – are also part of the accused.

The accused persons pleaded not guilty to all the 19 counts involving the misappropriation of about N32bn when the charges were read to them on Monday.

Baba-Kusa pleaded not guilty for himself and on behalf of his two firms.

Dasuki was represented by his lawyer, Mr. Ahmed Raji (SAN), who is also defending him in his trial of money laundering and illegal possession of firearms, instituted against him before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

While Salisu was represented by Mr. A.U. Mustapha, Baba-Kusa was represented by Ms. Umahani Ali.

The judge adjourned till 12pm on Tuesday for the hearing of the accused persons’ bail applications.

In the counter-affidavit, filed by the EFCC against Dasuki’s application, sighted by our correspondent on Monday, the prosecution stated that “the severity of the punishment upon conviction, which awaits the applicant, is an incentive for him to jump bail.”

The prosecution also opposed his bail application on the grounds that as “a former military officer and a former NSA,” Dasuki had the power to influence witnesses and in effect frustrate his trial.

It added that the accused person was still under investigation for more allegations against him and currently facing other criminal charges before the FCT High Court and the Federal High Court.

The accused persons were led away by the EFCC operatives, who produced them in court earlier in the day.

There is also facing another set of charges involving Dasuki, Salisu, a former Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda; a former Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa; his son, Sagir Attahiru, and their firm, Dalhatu Investment.

Justice Peter Affe of the same FCT High Court in Maitama, where the case against them was filed, on Monday, granted the EFCC leave to prefer the charges against the accused persons.

The second set of charges involves 22 counts of misappropriation of about N13.651bn meant for the purchase of arms to fight Boko Haram in the North-East.

The accused were said to have misappropriated a total of N13.651bn between August, 2013 and May 7, 2015.

In the 19 charges on which Dasuki and others were arraigned on Monday, the EFCC alleged that a former Special Assistant, Domestic Affairs to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Warimpamowei Dudafa, was on the run for his involvement in the release of N10bn from the NSA office to the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential primary delegates.

They were accused of misappropriating about N32bn between January 13, 2013 and April 17, 2015, amounting to an offence of criminal breach of trust against the provisions of Section 315 of the Penal Code Act, and Section 17 (b) of the EFCC Act, 2004.

They were also charged with dishonest receipt of stolen property in breach of sections 97 and 317 of the Penal Code Act as well as receipt of proceeds of criminal conduct in breach of Section 17(b) of the EFCC Act.

Part of the charges in the first set are, “That you Col. Mohammed Sambo Dasuki, whilst being National Security Adviser and Shaibu Salisu, whilst being the Director of Finance and Administration in the Office of the National Security Adviser and Mr. Waripamowei Dudafa (now at large), whilst being Senior Special Assistant, Domestic Affairs to the President, on or about November 27, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, entrusted with dominion over certain properties to wit: the sum of N10bn, being part of the funds in the account of the National Security Adviser with the CBN, the equivalent of which sum you received from the CBN in foreign currencies to wit: $47m and €5.6m (Euros), committed criminal breach of trust in respect of the said property when you claimed to have distributed same to the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Primary Election delegates and you thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 315 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 532, Vol.4, LFN 2004.
