https://cdn.dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/PIC.4.-PRESIDENT-BUHARI-RECEIVES-BISHOP-KUKAH-IN-ABUJA.jpg?fbe18f Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, has advised the Federal Government to handle the pro-biafra agitation with utmost care, stating that the agitators were entitled to their request, therefore, must not be crucified for it. Kuka called on the government to draw the leader of the group close and dialogue with him, instead of force. Speaking on the topic: “The Pursuit of Happiness: Some Thoughts On Human Rights, Freedom And Justice In Nigeria,” at the 41st Convocation Lecture of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, the priest urged President Muhammadu Buhari to have a round table discussion with Kanu and his fellow activists, in order to maintain peace. Kuka who stressed that the arrest of Kanu by security operatives resulted in heavy protests across the globe, affirmed that no governor in Nigeria could command the number of people that the pro-Biafra leader brought out without any form of inducement. He said: “This country cannot continue this way. The Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, has the right to seek Biafra since we have freedom of expression. The problem of Nigeria should not be with Kanu but with those who let the door open. “The President of Nigeria or any governor, unless he pays, cannot bring the number of people that Kanu brought out. “The anxiety of Nigeria should be that a young man (Kanu) who can bring out this great number of people is worth doing business with.” The bishop called on Nigerians, especially politicians, to discard lust for power and greed for material gain, saying they do not bring happiness. “The world can provide for the need of everybody but cannot provide for the greed of everybody, ” Kuka said. http://dailypost.ng/2015/12/13/dialogue-with-nnamdi-kanu-pro-biafra-group-now-bishop-kuka-tells-buhari/ |

https://cdn.dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/suswam.png?fbe18f The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday told a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja how the immediate past Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam alongside his Commissioner for Finance, Omadachi Okolobia, stole over N3.1bn from the state treasury. At the resumed trial, the prosecutor, Detective Junaidu Sa’id, said his team took up the case following a petition dated July 14, 2015 against the Suswam and Oklobia. Sa’id told the court that in the course of their investigations, it was discovered that the Suswam gave a directive for shares owned by the State Government be sold so as to raise the sum of N10bn. The prosecutor said, following the directive, Elixir Investment Partners was appointed as stockbrokers to oversee sale of the shares, from which over N9 billion was realised. He also stated that Elixir Investment Partners, was instructed to pay the N9bn raised from the sales of the shares into three different bank accounts, adding that another instruction was given for the payment of N1bn to be made into Benue Investment Properties Company’s account, while the balance of N8bn be paid into two separate accounts with the name of Benue State Ministry of Finance. The prosecutor further stated that while Elixir was trying to pay the sum into the two separate accounts of the Benue State Ministry of Finance as directed, it was discovered that one of the accounts does not belong to the Ministry but to one Fanffash Resources. Following the discovery, Elixir sought clarification from Okolobia, who mandated the company to pay N5bn into the account of Benue State Ministry of Finance while N3.1bn be paid into Fanffash Resources account. Sa’id said the owner of Fanfash Resources, Abubakar Umar, was invited by the EFCC who confirmed that he received N3.1bn and converted same to its dollar equivalent, amounting to $15.8m, adding that he later delivered it in cash to former Governor Suswam at his Maitama Residence in Abuja. The court however adjourned the case till January 18, and 19 2016 for cross examination of the witness and continuation of hearing. http://dailypost.ng/2015/12/09/how-ex-governor-suswam-diverted-n3bn-from-benue-state-treasury-efcc/ |

https://cdn.dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/gov_sule-lamido.jpg?fbe18f Sule Lamido The Court of Appeal sitting in Kaduna on Monday, dismissed the appeal of Aminu Sule Lamido, the 34 year old son of former Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, against the decision of the Federal High Court, Kano which found him guilty of the charge of money laundering brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. Aminu Sule Lamido was arrested on the 11th of December 2012 by operatives of the EFCC, at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport on his way to Egypt for failure to declare the sum of $40,000 in the Customs Currency Declaration Form after initially declaring the statutory $10,000 to the Nigeria Custom Service. Aminu, a 2010 graduate of Mass a Communication from the Bayero University Kano, was subsequently arraigned on February 4, 2013, on one count charge of false declaration of foreign currency. The charge reads: “That you, Aminu Sule Lamido, on or about 11th day of December, 2012 at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano within the Jurisdiction of the Federal High Court while transporting in cash, the sum of $50,000 (fifty thousand dollars only) from Nigeria to Cairo, Egypt, falsely declare to the Nigeria Customs Service the sum of $10,000 (Ten Thousand dollars only) instead of the said sum of $50,000(fifty thousand dollars only) as required under Section 12 of the Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act Cap F34 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 and Section 2(3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 2(5) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011”. Aminu was tried and consequently convicted on July 12, 2015 by a Federal High Court sitting in Kano and ordered to forfeit 25 percent of the undeclared sum. Dissatisfied with the judgment of the trial court, Aminu filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal, Kaduna Division, praying the Appellate court to set aside the judgment of the lower court. The Appellate court in its judgment delivered by Justice H.A.O Abiru upheld the decision of the lower court and resolved all issues raised against the appellant. http://dailypost.ng/2015/12/07/money-laundering-sule-lamidos-son-aminu-loses-appeal/ |
https://cdn.dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/buhari-nn.jpg?fbe18f President Muhammadu Buhari has said he may extend the December deadline he earlier gave to the military to flush out Boko Haram from the shores of the country, the BBC reports. “If there are exigencies that require the modification of the time frame, the federal government will not hesitate to do so,” Buhari was quoted as saying. DAILY POST recalls that Buhari had in August this year set a December 31 deadline for the military to stamp out insurgency in the north-east part of the country. The military, have, however succeeded in taking back most of the territories held by Boko Haram. http://dailypost.ng/2015/12/07/boko-haram-december-deadline-may-be-extended-buhari/ |

Kill 'em all...Bloody terrorists... |
Reports reaching us indicate that three Nigerian soldiers have lost their lives in a bloody battle against Boko Haram members in the notorious Sambisa forest. This was reportedly made known by the Army spokesman, Sani Usman, on Sunday, December 6, in a statement obtained by Premium Times. The spokesman said the tragedy occurred following the commencement of attack against the terrorists deep inside the Sambisa forest. Usman said many of the terrorists were also killed during the attack, adding that several captives were rescued by the soldiers during the operation. He further hinted that three soldiers also sustained various degrees of injuries in the various military operations against the demonic group. Below is the full statement issued by the Nigerian Army: Military Commence Strikes Deep Into Sambisa Forest The Nigerian Army has commenced strikes deep inside Sambisa forest which is believed to be the remaining strong point of the Boko Haram terrorists. Various units of the Army have advanced deep into the forest clearing most of the camps therein, rescuing persons held captive, arresting some terrorists and destroying most of their weapons and equipment. Advancing troops of the Nigerian Army, supported by the Nigerian Air Force were able to clear and destroy Boko Haram terrorists camps at Shuari, Adembe, Yerimari Kura, Yerimari Gana, Gonin Kurmi, Kore, Mainya Kore, and Lopere. Additionally, the Multi-barrel Rocket Launcher Regiment has destroyed the terrorists camps at Dure, Dure Kore, Jokwa, as well as several other camps. The troops recovered foodstuff, motorcycles, flags, Improvised Explosive Making Devices (IED) materials and military uniforms. Among other discoveries were the terrorists tunnels, weapons and equipment. The soldiers also recovered 2,000 cows rustled from various persons over time and rescued women and children held captives by the Boko Haram. While the animals have been moved to Kanwuri, the rescued persons have been evacuated and are being given all the necessary support and assistance. During the encounter with the terrorists at Yerimari Gana a number of Boko Haram terrorists were killed and some suspected terrorists were arrested who are being interrogated. However, a soldier sustained gunshot wound and fracture on the leg. Similarly, while advancing to destroy Nefari terrorists camp, troops discovered and cleared 3 IEDs laid along the route. The camp was successfully cleared and troops have continued their advance while a blocking force has been deployed to prevent infiltration and possible escape by the terrorists. Unfortunately during another encounter with the terrorists along the axis of advance, 3 soldiers made the supreme sacrifice, while an officer and 2 soldiers were wounded in action. It is instructive to note that the troops morale is very high and being conscious of their set objective, they are unrelenting in their determination to defeat the Boko Haram terrorists. In a related development, troops have also destroyed Boko Haram terrorists camps Bulagaije and Disa, Gwoza Local Government Area, Borno State and recovered motorcycles, Dane guns and ammunitions. Sambisa forest is the major stronghold of the terrorist group which has claimed the lives of no fewer than 20,000 innocent people since 2009. Just yesterday, December 5, reports have it that about between 15 and 30 people were killed while over 130 were injured after a suicide bombing suspected to have been orchestrated by Boko Haram members at Koulfoua island on the Chadian side of Lake Chad. https://www.naij.com/658439-bloody-battle-sambisa-forest-leaves-three-soldiers-dead-several-terrorists-killed.html?utm_campaign=traqli&utm_source=traqli&utm_medium=traqli&source=traqli

Twenty-three years after a military plane crash in which more than 159 officers lost their lives in Ejirin swamp in Lagos in 1992, then military ruler, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB) has finally spoken on the ill-fated incident. Babangida, in an exclusive chat in the maiden edition of The Interview, disclosed that the crashed aircraft ought not to have flown on that specific day, based on the issue of maintenance and number of flying hours already attained. Responding to a question posed by The Interview on what actually transpired on that day and if the crash was properly investigated, the 73-year-old former president said: “It was investigated. It was reported. But you guys had a mindset. Certain people had a mindset; nobody was interested in the report. But it was investigated. What happened in sum total was that the aircraft should not have been flying. There are mandatory stages, number of hours and maintenance. All those things that are mandatory were not there.” When he was asked on what happened to the people who authorised the plane to fly on that ill-fated day, Babangida said there was no penalty meted out, adding: “They ought to have been punished. I know that blame was apportioned. I wouldn’t know about the punishment. We investigated; we even apportioned blame but no penalty.” On why that was so, he simply remarked, “That is the Nigerian factor.” Responding to inquiries on who killed renowned journalist, Dele Giwa who died from a parcel bomb blast, Babangida said, “A Bomb”. When asked in the interview on who sent the bomb, he replied: “Would you ever think somebody could sit and ask a soldier or anybody, go and kill that man?” Upon the interviewer’s response that “It depends....”, IBB was quoted to have replied: “It depends on who? If what you hear about other African leaders is anything to go by, you are right to believe that it could happen because of what happened in the case of the Mobutus of this world. But there is also one human being who believes in God, who believes you cannot take away life, who believes that God forbids you to do that, who believes that God created you equally. Somebody of that nature cannot, in all fairness order the execution or killing of another person.” When he was pressed on his relationship with late Dele Giwa, Babangida replied: “We were friends. Very soon, somebody is going to accuse me of saying he is my friend. I knew him very closely. I have correspondence between him and me. But that is not enough for you to believe that we were friends. What is enough is that I took a bomb and killed him.” When The Interview countered that “There was a general feeling that he knew a lot of military guys and knew more than he was supposed to know....”, IBB cut in...… ”That he knew we were dealing in drugs and Gloria Okon. Somebody should have come out with it by now. He must have left some manuscripts.” When he was asked if he suppressed the investigation, the former president replied, “There was a report on that investigation if you may be interested to know.” On the interviewer’s remark that witnesses in the investigation were apparently hidden, Babangida replied, “No. Most of what you guys talked about was fictitious. Even one of the persons you guys said was involved does not seem to exist. Gloria Okon; she does not seem to be in existence. And then you came out with, what is the name of the other girl who was supposed to be my wife’s friend? She was in prison or something; you came out with that one. There is virtually no truth in it all. People are not very good in putting stories together to make it look credible. They only make it look fantastic. If you are dealing with an idiot, of course you can do anything. But you deal with a man who thinks, a man who tries to rationalise”. On Saturday, September 26, 1992, a Nigerian Air Force Hercules C-130 (NAF 911) transport plane, carrying more than 200 persons, took off at 5:27 pm from the Runway 19 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, with its destination the city of Kaduna in northern Nigeria. However, a few minutes after take-off, the heavy-laden plane, which was said to be carrying not just the military boys and girls but young students of the Nigerian Military School (NMS), Zaria, alongside civilians, relations and friends of military officers, developed a fault and nose-dived into the deep swamp not too far from the Lagos State Low Cost Housing Estate, Ejigbo to the Festac Town, Lagos, killing all those onboard. In the crash officers of the 19, 20, 21 and 22 Regular Courses of the Nigerian Defence Academy were badly hit. A list of 159 names of those officially listed as passengers of the C-130H was released on October 1 by the Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Fred Chijuka. The list was made up of seven Lieutenant Colonels, 96 Majors, a Sergeant, Michael Bahago, two students – Mr. O B Oshodi, Mrs. M A Abu, and a reporter, Mr. Augustine Okpe. There were also the eight-officer crew including Alaboson, Mamadi, Squadron Leader J A Adeiza and Flight Lieutenant S O Adamu. The other men, Alum Wakala, Tarfa Saidu, W T Datong and A Soyemi in addition to 19 Air Force officers, were made up of 18 Squadron Leaders and a Sergeant, O. Jaja. The Nigerian Navy lost 16 Lieutenant Commanders, Ghanaian Armed Forces, five; Tanzania lost Major M S Mgonja while Ugandan Major J R Mulazi also lost his life in the crash. The Nigerian Army Education Corps lost a total of 19 officers, Infantry 17, Artillery 15, Intelligence nine, Signals nine, Supply and Transport eight, Military Police seven while the Electrical and Mechanical Armoured and Medical Corps lost four officers each. Others included Ordinance three while Finance and Personnel and Training lost two men each. http://www.lailasblog.com/2015/12/29-years-after-ibb-opens-up-on-what.html?m=1 |

Growing up in the early 80s exposed an average Nigerian youth to memories that will forever be tagged ''evergreen'' - movies, culture, music etc. To some, 'souvenirs', to others, 'it purely forms a significant part of their childhood stories. It really throws me way far back to see this iconic scenes now recreated by the two of the best Indian actors over time. ''HOW TIME FLIES''. Who would believe that Sholay was released in 1975. Amitabh Bachchan now 73, Dharmendra (Dharam Singh Deol) 79, both still radiate the energy and tenacity that brought us wonderful childhood memories. No doubt 'Sholay' formed a part of my growing up. I would still recommend this movie anyday, anytime. If you remember the scenes below, your childhood was indeed awesomely awesome.
