A friend of mine, back in Lagos is a great listener I know in person.

When he gives you audience, you know someone is listening.

His excellent listening ability, have won him many good things. Including a wife of his dreams.

Here are some things anyone can learn from him, when it comes to the art of listening.

1. Make out time to Listen: When you bring issues to him, and he perceives it is going to be a long one, he politely reschedules.

Listening is an art, so you have to make out time to listen.

A colleague comes to you with an issue, and you are under a tight deadline.

Politely reschedule.

If you don’t, you will listen under pressure.

And when you listen under pressure, it shows.

You will not effectively practice the next tips exhibited by my friend, the great listener.

2. Tune in: It was said of the great psychologist Sigmund Freud:

“When he listens to you, it seems someone is peering into your soul.” (Paraphrased).

I never had Mr. Freud, listen to me.

Yet I get that feeling when my friend listens to me.

It seems as if, through his empathic piercing eyes, he already knows what I’m going to say, even before I say it.

He accomplishes this through:

a) Eye contact: Maintain good eye contact when listening. Without words it tells the speaker,” I’m here for you. Also, it helps you to see other things, which aren’t conveyed in words - non verbal communication.

b) Signs: While listening, exhibit signs to tell the speaker that you are listening. It can be with nods, throat sounds such as, mhmmm or words such as okay, fine, I’m with you, continue.

c) Questions: Timing is key. If it comes too early, you will come across as a detective, and your listening ability will loose its effectiveness.

d) Paraphrase: What you have been told, the issue at hand, briefly summarize it in your own words with at most five sentences.

Listening can increase subordinates and customers loyalty.

Thereby increasing employee and customer engagement, which leads to increased productivity.

Listening as a technique can improve your social awareness and relationship management skills.

These are two quadrants in emotional intelligence.

I found it laughable that SE people are always trying to attach to us forcefully when it should be obvious to them that we do not trust them. 1. Peter Obi wins "Tinubu's" Lagos. But you are still saying INEC is rigging for Tinubu just so that when Tinubu wins Katsina, you will say it was rigged.

The APC guy was Obanikoro's son. The PDP guy was Banky W the musician. Both floored by a Labour party candidate people didn't know.

But the election was rigged is coming from the mouth of Labour party supporters.

8. Another unknown Labour party candidate defeated the APC and PDP in the major Senatorial Election in Edo.

The gap was almost 200%. If you add the PDP and APC votes together, the unknown Labour candidate still beat them with over 50k votes and these were not small candidates. They are the two most influential people in Benin!

But Labour Party supporters are still shouting rigging, failed election. Does this make sense

9. Obi is heading to 500,000 votes in Enugu. Whereas Tinubu has less than 5,000 votes in the whole Enugu.

This is not rigged, but wherever Tinubu wins is rigged.

10. Atiku's VP is the GOVERNOR of Delta State.

In Delta State, Obi has won 11 out of the 16 Local Government Areas annoinced so far.

But his supporters are still shouting the election is rigged. Is that not madness?

Has the RCCG ever openly supported any candidate before? Or as the church ever prevented any candidate from visiting and participating in its programs? If not, why should the church change its policy for the sake of your candidate? Why this baseless sense of entitlement?

Why are you guys so vehement about arm twisting and bullying everyone to support your candidate, including churches that try to stay neutral, and thereby leaving their congregations to make their own political decisions. This is the honorable thing for most churches to do, especially if they have not been instructed by God to take definitive steps to support any candidate.

The funny part is that it is not even the religion that is driving your passions but your quest to use religion to reach your partisan and tribal goals. This is because Obi does not belong to any of those churches that you are now bullying and forming online mobs against. He has even been accused of belonging to some other groups outside of the church.

Most of you applauded these churches when they said what you wanted but turned against them (mob style) the moment they refused to endorse your candidate. Is it that you guys are already looking for who to blame if Obi doesn’t win or what? This smells badly of tribal bigotry. No fairness, no objectivity, no sportsmanship. Just crude bullying.

Finally, these practices as you guys are expressing are only to be found amongst cults and not in the church!
